The Throwback (2024)

Good Lord, who voted this dreck so highly?
20 April 2024
We were looking for something entertaining and highly rated for a Friday night, and we stumbled across this movie. Little did we realize that everyone who worked on this film must have jumped on voting up their experience. Will Sasso (I loved him in Mom) is the only actor doing anything beyond pulling his own weight, and everyone else (kids included) were kind of horrific, but who can blame them? The concept was good, but we knew within minutes that the writing was just flaccid, the situations are predictable, and the actors did what they could with it with the dead script they were handed. They just weren't given a whole heck of a lot to work with, and it shows.

Who on Earth rates this higher then a 5?
1 January 2023
My wife and I took a flyer on this movie because with just under 100 votes, it was rated a 9.2 We had never heard of this title, and when looking at the details of it we also did not know any of the actors listed (should that have been a warning to us?) but thought 'we'll, why not?' We are always looking for decent movies to watch.

Well, now we know those 96 votes must all be among the people in Saint Joseph Missouri where the movie was filmed on location or related to the actors cast in it.

The actors are all no one you've ever heard of before and with the way they read their lines here you'll never of them again. We made it 30-45 minutes before we gave up and moved on. I don't recommend this one to anybody.

Patton Oswalt: We All Scream (2022 TV Special)

Two words- Clown P***s
28 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I think i like Patton Oswald more then my wife does, but we decided to stop and give a listen to this special that's just been released this week. We stopped watching this special after ten minutes of a sidetrack from a story that involved a barn full of the public hairs from clowns. He paused at least once and then resumed his march off the end of the wharf. Maybe he was going to get back on trac soon, but who the hell has the patience to wait that long for him to get this unfunny stuff out of his system?

He can be funny, his stories can be fun observational stuff, but lord this was not it tonight. Someone could let me know how far to fast forward to get pass the burning car on the side of the road,

How could you make the Space Station THIS dull?
30 July 2022
This consists of a series of vignettes of various folks who've spent some time on ISS, and at least one would be astronaut who ended up being NASA support staff before crew number 1 (god, has it been that many years already?!?), while a few are uplifting and occasionally magical, many are full as dishwater. It's the space station, they shouldn't be that badly put together!

How on earth was this made?
5 July 2022
We got 10-15 minutes in before my wife looked at me and we decided to kiss off the $4.99 we spent (based on the IMDB rating) and call it a day. Leah Thompson, fire whoever thought this role was a good idea.

Kevin Hart is not ever funny
26 June 2022
Kevin Hart never stops talking, and the script is so stupid that his character's blathering just brings a spotlight's attention to that script's glaring shortcomings. My wife and I made it about 20 minutes in, so we never even got to meet Kaley Couco. Oh well.

Good Lord, why was this made?
14 May 2022
All the ads you ever saw for this movie showed scenes from the first 20 minutes. The script was so totally derivative, like a low rent Romancing the Stone, the chemistry between Bullock and Tatum is like a wet match. The writing of the Tatum character is so one dimensional and contributes to how blank the movie seems. Brad Pitt's character is fun, but his presence is so minimal that it doesn't really help the overall feel of the movie. Daniel Radcliffe could have been replaced with a cardboard cutout.

Where did the $75 million budget go? Did the stars eat up the budget?

Watch for the writing, stay for the scenery
3 May 2022
Nicely written, with a group of actors I've never seen any of them before, and hours of breathtaking scenery. Is this the Rhône river? Is that the Ardeche Gorge? I don't know there's no credits anywhere as to where it was filmed, but it's utterly fantastic. The music is good- a series of flash backs to 30 years ago that was handled well.

You will not regret watching this, it's very entertaining!

An empty script about grief
25 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Ronald Dahl apparently couldn't adequately deal with his still living children (or his wife for that matter) after his favorite child died. Keely Hawes was quite good with a thin plot.

Oh Dear God
5 December 2021
This movie has a number of actors I've liked before in previous movies, shows and roles but dear lord, after watching this, I hope they and the crew liked what they did, because i have nothing to show for it on my side. If only I could go back and change my decision to watch this dreary piece of naval gazing.

Good Lord, seeing Patty Jenkin's name on this movie, I expected to love this movie, but what a God Awful mess this thing was. The bad guys were weak, the good Girl was weak, the plot was weak.

Who on earth was the target audience?
4 April 2021
Unexpectedly dark for a '90s Disney animated movie, we watched this on a Saturday night and thought it was okay. In light of the Notre Dame fire of last year and the unveiling of this generation's horrific priests, it could have been even darker. Good job Disney, even if the comic relief (a Disney staple) was played by three gargoyles and a goat this time.

Carly Chaikin to the Rescue
5 August 2020
His film is a muddy mess, saved by the addition (late) of Carly Chaikin. The other two leads can not emote to save their souls, and I hope that Carly has paid enough dues in Hollywood to soon get a role commiserate to her skills as an actress.

Don't Bothah wit this version of Spenser
13 March 2020
The Spenser novels were some of the finest writing in the field for twenty years. Robert Urlich's Spenser for Hire was great TV for three season, Avery Brooks as Spenser's associate Hawk was the well dressed epitome of cool. Hawk's girlfriend Susan was a fantastic calming influence on Spenser.

35 years later, what do we have. You have a miniature Spenser, you have a Hawk who looks good but isn't the coolest, deadliest Zen philosopher in the city of Boston like he's supposed to be. Iliza Schlesinger ends up being a high point in the movie, but her character has nothing to do with the Spenser stories, and Mark Wahlberg should be ashamed to put characters on the screen with the same names but nothing to do with the novels. Avoid this like the plague.

You should have married her, you idiot

Warning: Spoilers
Remarkable story of recovery while being oblivious to the love of his life being there every day he needed her. I blame the effects of his parent's relationship on ruining his relationship with Jen.

For as much money and effects were put into this production, the audio technology used made many numbers a garbled mess.

Like the World's Worse SNL Skit
2 March 2018
Like a car accident in the next lane, I watched 30 minutes of this, wondering if it was ever going to get any less uncomfortable. Eventually, I drove past the accident, then I couldn't even see it in my mirror, and I found something else to watch.

Ryan Phillipe really can't act to save his soul
24 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
The weak link of this otherwise pretty good movie is Ryan Phillipe

His character is kidnapped and being held captive, and during that captivity, he is the victim of torture, and while we're shown some pretty damned convincing torture during this movie, Mr. Phillipe is totally unconvincing as the victim of this torture.

The crew that is doing this torture are absolutely great- they are actually good actors, and their actions reflect the complexity of their roles and their corresponding abilities as actors. On the other hand, watching Ryan Phillipe in this is like watching Rob Schneider attempting drama, and that would definitely not be for the faint of heart.

Glee: Tested (2014)
Season 5, Episode 16

Best episode in a long, long time
16 April 2014
This had to be the best Glee episode they've run in the past season or more. They used good songs this week, ones that actually moved the plot along (boy, I've been missing that lately, Glee!), they even used songs from an era closer to our current one. They also actually had a well written story line that progressed as it should, involving just about all the Ohio characters that have been magically found themselves in New York (the city so nice they named it twice), and the episode was filled with teen aged kids who actually acted like teen aged kids have been known to so. Congratulations Glee show runners! Folks, you done good here, even having Rachel Berry acting like a normal human being and not the bizarre psycho bitch that she's been written as in recent months......

Ground Force & Changing Rooms meets in your yard in Roman Times
12 November 2003
An archeological dig in your back yard, as you discover what happened in your back yard 350 or 3500 years ago, if you live in England, where your history didn't begin 400 years ago. The dig begins today, and they fill the whole thing back in, after they've been at it for three days. The excitement of the discoveries uncovered as they occur, the involvement of the property owners and the neighbors as they find the history around them.

The uses of computer animation to show how things used to look (or might have looked!) and the technology that allows the scientists to 'look' into the ground even before the first shovel full of earth is turned over.

The show is seen in the US on the History Channel International channel, and is well worth looking up.

a Science Fiction tour de force
18 November 2002
This movie did more to explain, use, and get characters out of, time travel paradoxes then anything I have ever seen on the screen. This movie BLEW ME AWAY with how it handled what had seemed like a goofy premise when the flick had come out. I have now watched it from beginning to end on three occasions, and it continues to blow me away. The casting of the father and son in 1969 and the present day are great, and watching the son unfold with every change in the past is wonderful. Why this movie didn't even get nominated for a Hugo Award (the awards given by the World SF convention each year) amazes me- it should have won the award.

Real Genius- real student pranks
27 September 2001
Most of what is seen behind the scenes at the college in this film seemed to be based on stories that I had heard in the late 1970's, as happening at MIT or CalTech. The tobbogan runs in the hallway, the nitrogen coins used in the coffee vending machine, little things about how the students looked (they didn't look Hollywood hansome, they looked like the geeks on your school!). Somebody heard the same stories I did, and it made the movie that much more real. All these years later, it still holds up for me.
