Chuck: Chuck Versus the Business Trip (2011)
Perfection. What else?
A classic example of why the show has so many die-hard fans (literally... I love Die Hard). The cult references make for hilarity, especially in the hands of a group of characters with such wildly different tastes, knowledge of popular culture. The action scenes are well crafted in this episode, taking their time to climax, with complexity to the investigation by our spies and twists that lead to cliffhangers... Why 10? 1. Jeff's rebirth is a brilliantly refreshing turn for the Buy More side of the plot; the whole dynamic within the store has irrevocably changed for the better. 2. Chuck's facial expressions when in shock, any other situation. 3. Sarah and Casey's continued confusion whenever popular culture is referenced.
Chuck needs to do little more than the status quo to have me bawling and wanting more and as such I may be blind to any weaknesses in the show, but frankly, if you're reading this, so are you.
Smallville: Isis (2010)
THE defining episode of Smallville
While the main plot of this episode surrounded another mystical 'possession' of one of the main characters, the sub-plot and relationships between Clark, Lois, Oliver and Tess were what made it so poignant and such a turning point.
Prior to this episode, Tess was the nefarious protégé to Lex and therefore could not be trusted by our protagonists. Her altruistic actions to sincerely aid Clark and her upbringing of Alexander, whatever her untold motives, demonstrate a dramatic and much awaited change in her character; almost, if you like, opposite to the transition that Lex took throughout the seasons. For me, whenever a change like this occurs, whatever the context, it is always beautiful to watch and is refreshing given the frequent betrayals and distancing of characters in so many story lines, not only in Smallville. The equally potent theme, specific to Smallville, is the revealing of Clark's secret, regardless of whether there were suspicions from the characters before about his true nature. The duality of his existence is mostly only known by the audience and a select few on-screen characters. When there is a huge revelation, like in this episode, one can truly imagine an exciting storyline to follow. This happened after Chloe found out in season 4 and was told everything by Clark in the premiere of season 5, the discovery by Lana had a similar effect. If only Lex had been given a major role in season 8...
I was mostly apathetic to the main plot of the episode, but the effects that it had on the relationships and the shaping of the characters is what made it so fantastic to watch.
