The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984)
What a wierd Movie - Feels like a scam
Not sure what to think of this movie, it is fun even though the action is completely lackluster despite all the excellent action actors. The movie feels like it was made by a bunch of secondary character actors (check out the cast, it is amazing list of good actors) so that they can keep their film actors guild membership while in a drought. Not sure this is what the movie is, but that is what it feels like.
Can't really comment on the script, people hail it as clever, I find it childish in a lovable fun way, but I'm not smart enough to get all the science jokes in it. Buckaroo Banzai (Robocop) is half japanese somehow, he is everything, but we never see him use a katana ever, there are basically no action scenes but a lot of goofy running around, more like a scooby doo cartoon episode. My friend commented though this is the only movie ever where the bad guys sentries actually do their job and set the alarm the moment they are attacked and call for help, none of that "huh what was that" and go down silently, the real heroes of this movie is the bad guys spacenigerians guards. I give it a 7/10 for it's creativity and amazing fun props/set design and light heartedness. You can probably write a whole novel just describing the movie, I had no clue what was going on. But it's a fun movie, and isn't that worth something?
Hardcore Henry (2015)
Great action cinematic - Poor movie
The action is amazing, the stunt work 100/100 and it is one hell of a ride. That being said it's not a movie I will ever see again, the plot is barely there at best, ofc it doesn't try to be a real movie and you should expect that going in, if you do, you will most likely love it.
I however expected more, not sure what I expected, but I at least expected a story. My friends overhyped me telling me it was the greatest movie ever, so expected something like Papillon level, but instead got a action flick I consider worse than "Payback" or "Last Boy Scout" which I do love but take for what they are.
Jûbê ninpûchô (1993)
Perfect Anime for Bro Night
If you ever wonder what anime movie you can show your non-otaku friends then this is it, the action is fast paced, animation is beautiful, the characters are lovable and the dialogue is very good or funny in the english dub. Despite it's age it still holds up, and I have never once had a movie night where it was a flop, everyone seem to like or love this movie and you don't have to be an anime fan to enjoy it, maybe that's why it was better received outside of Japan than in Japan.
Manhunter (1986)
Favorite Thriller
This movie is something I rewatch every year, sometimes more than once. It's an experience to watch at night with excellent visuals and incredible sound and OST, the dialogue is some of the best I have ever heard, it feels 100% real and the delivery and acting by William Petersen and Dennis Farina with their banter, back and forth arguments, man it is so insane. Sometimes I have just to watch the scene where Farina tells Graham he would pull him back into the game again several times, it's really awe inspiring acting and writing, add the incredible OST and the perfect cinematography on top and the film is one of the best there is. I think it surpasses Red Dragon by miles even though that movie is decent, and it's in many ways better experience than Silence of the Lambs even though the latter has Buffalo Bill which is a more interesting murderer.
Pokémon: Detective Pikachu (2019)
Pokemon meets Blade Runner
I was really skeptical about the movie, the reviews were either one of confusement by general audience, disappointment by fans and harsh bashing from professional critics. Still a solid base loved the movie, and after watching it I understand why. The movie is more like Blade Runner than the Pokemon cartoon it is based on, and for a movie that's based on a game that's about having pokemon battle each other it has very little direct action, and I do have some criticism which I will get back to because this last point was a unnecessary slap in the face to the die hard fans. The fans hated it because it wasn't like the series, critics are just critics and general audience was confused by a solid grimdark detective movie set in a silly pokemon world. That the movie was dark helps with the CGI effects, and gives the movie a very dark tone which is strengthened by the fact that yes, pokemon can and do in fact kill humans if lose control. A lot of criticism is aimed at the script, which unwarranted because for once a video game adaptation has a solid plot which you can follow and even has a few satisfying twists and set ups with pay offs. The pacing is also great, it pushes the movie along without leaving you behind. The characters are very likable, the main character comes off as unlikable in the beginning as a bland insurance appraiser with his Ash Ketchum buddy seemingly should be the main character, and you are left wondering, "what's happening? Why are we following the insurance salesman and not Ash Ketchum lookalike?" but this twists later after he meets pikachu, it adds to his character, he is flawed but becomes a hero by the end, how it's supposed to be. The female costar comes off as typical Disney obnoxious reporter already at the top, but twist in later scenes you realize she is very likable with her psyduck partner. As for the actual plot of the villain, like most monster or fantastical movies its asinine in many ways like Ridley Scotts Prometheus, but still it works because the detective story is what's interesting and the main plot is the mystery of Pikachu and not really Mewtwo. And Ryan Reynolds Pikachu was truly amazing, he gives the little yellow mouse or whatever so much personality you can't help but love him. And I see many cricism saying the movie was not funny, I was laughing out loud at many jokes Reynolds Pikachu comes with, it is not in your face and I think most of the jokes flew by people not paying attention to the dialogue because there isn't any slapstick humor. And to get back to the criticism with the slap in the face of the diehard fans, this movie has a 20min running scene in a forest and mountain which doesn't add anything to the movie, the visuals look great, but in order to give some deserved fanservice to the pokemon fans out there these 20minutes should have been spent showing off a proper Pokemon Battle in the Stadium, we see a 5sec visual of two Pokemon trainers going at it at a grand arena, and it looks freaking amazing, I would have loved to watched that battle and this would have satiated the fans, I don't think it would have been more expensive because the moving forest/mountain pokemon scene surely also was expensive af but using that money and time on a proper 20min battle in the stadium as a bro nod to the fans would have pushed this movie to a 10/10 and made the fans happy too. Surprisingly good and enjoyable film.
The Shadow (1994)
Excellent movie that will stand the Test of Time
The Shadow is a perfect homage to the old long forgotten comic Shadow superhero, in short runtime it establishes it's own unique universe in 1920's America and manages to go through all the stages of a movie and never feels boring which is why I give it a 10/10. It's not Marvel super 3 hour long metaverse. The movie is quaint, short and have soul. The performances of John Lone is superb, the acting is great, Penelope Ann Miller makes you fall for her but ofc the star of the show Alec Baldwin is an amazing actor, he gives the shadow a lot of depth and his physiognomy makes him work as both a villain and hero. And ofc kudos to Tim Curry, amazing performance as always, you can't help but love him. I have probably seen this movie over 20 times and I never am bored, every scene brings something and feels natural. Excellent Movie, I miss old hollywood.
Spawn (1997)
Still holds up
It's a great movie, as a fan of Todd McFarlane works I loved the comics, but what really sells this movie is the performance of John Leguizamo brings so much charm and humor to the movie, and ofc Martin Sheen. Also Michael Jai White is a great actor that pulls of Spawn's character. The CGI is outdated, but its more funny and adds to the movie ironically. The Puppet of the Violator is amazing, and the scene the puppet is shown off you really get a good sense of the dread from the Daemon.
Heavy Metal (1981)
Excellent adaptation of the beloved magazine
I find it funny that people are either offended by the childishness of the film or only know of it because of South Park. The Movie has a long rich history being bazed on the Magazine that provided a platform for comicbook artists in both Americas and Europe that doesn't fall into DC/Dark Horse/Marvel. People attack the movie as perverted and immature, but guess what that's what Heavy Metal Magazine was made for, Teenagers! It's a coming of age for boys and probably girls too, which is why it doesn't take sexuality seriously as who did when they were 16? Most don't even know who they are at that point. Sex, Violence and cool Magic and Scifi mixed together helps brings the emotions out. It's amazing if you like this stuff, so yeah this movie was not made for a general audience, it was made for fans of the comics. The humor is very funny and the movie has many laugh out loud moments. Keeping in tradition with the magazine it takes the names from the movie is divided into several really unrelated parts, there is a red thread keeping the movie together which is probably for the best since its a movie and not a magazine, sort of like Pulp Fiction. The soundtrack really makes the movie as with a limited budget it's very hard to get quality animation, that being said even with choppy low framerate the artwork is very good and animation is decent even if it is on par with filmation saturday morning cartoon shows, it makes up for it with the mentioned sountrack and beautiful artwork and other cool effects. You can definitely made for watching while high on drugs, but even without drugs if you're fan of the Heavy Metal Magazine it's a very good movie.
