Generation Kill (2008)
Excellent start
What can I say? In the first episode I saw great and (for the most part) realistic dialogue, excellent acting, good character development, and an avoidance of most clichés. I especially liked how this episode did not give any kind of glorified look at the heroes of this miniseries; the characters are ordinary people, trained to kill. Because of this, we see people who are unapologetic in their views of the enemy and each other. They are trained to kill, and thank God for that and for them. If we did not have people like that working for us, I doubt any of us would be here posting messages on a website. As a former soldier, I cannot wait to see the rest of this series.
The Simpsons Movie (2007)
Very very funny
I've been a fan of the show since the first season so I had been waiting on this movie for a long time. To me, The Simpsons is the single best show of all time. Say what you want about how the show hasn't been as good as it used be; the first 9 or 10 seasons of the show are about the funniest things ever put on television!
Ten years is a long time to be putting out one classic episode after another. Today, The Simpsons is still funny, but episodes that make me laugh as hard as I did during those first ten seasons come around only once in a while.
Fortunately, this movie is one of those episodes. I laughed pretty much the whole way through it, and I laughed hard. As you can tell, I went to the movie expecting to like it. And even with high expectations, The Simpsons Movie still impressed me. The last movie that made me laugh so much and so hard was Borat. I can't wait to see it again.
Lost in Translation (2003)
An absolutely beautiful movie
I can understand that not everyone would like this movie, but if you do not at the very least appreciate it, then you simply do not understand art.
A very simple story about two strangers who are both lonely and lost. Two people who through each other, find new meaning and life in their respective worlds. Every shot of the camera has meaning. Every line spoken either makes you laugh and/or adds to the film's depth. It's so good I come close to tears every time I watch it (and the last movie to make me cry was Terminator 2). This is an example of perfect film-making. This is art.
