War = Horror
28 August 2002
This is film is truly incredible. The action is so real, it is like a live documentary. Coppola paints a horrific vision of the tragedy and madness of the Vietnam war. It is so interesting that it took 16 months to film, well over its expectancy and the fact that Coppola also had to use his own personal income to complete after it dramatically exceeded budgets.

It doesn't require any intellectual understanding, although the film is intellectually remarkable. The American soldiers in the Vietnam War jumped into the land of a fresh governmental country, aiming to protect themselves and in the end only received death and chaos for their troops and for the majority of the country they were fighting against. It was a war gone mad, like all other wars, without purpose or dignity. It was a pure act of humanity: to destroy and restore their own greedy needs. This is a film in which there is no saviour, where it is hardly possible to find hope in the gloomiest corners and where all surroundings are plagued with the infatuations of greed, anger, foolishness and egoism. As Coppola once said about the film: 'This film isn't about Vietnam. This film IS Vietnam'. He was right to the date. During the current situations of the world, where they are trying to protect their own skin, the world should try to analyse this film as much as possible and wonder about what it is trying to represent. It is a film which does not ask for applause or damnation. It asks for realism. A true masterpiece.

Casino (1995)

Class

This film is brilliant, it really is. It is underated and overshadowed by its predessesor 'Goodfellas'. Martin Scorsese really is the master of gangster movies, no doubt about it, yet the novelist Nicholas Pileggi deserves kudos too. People say this movie tries to hard to be like Goodfellas and I think thats a terrible description. The reason for this I think is that Joe Pesci's Nicky is too much the same character as his Tommy in Goodfellas. If they had of put someone else in that role, possibly Benicio DelToro or an Edward Norton with an Italian makeover, then Casino would have gotten more individual praise. To me, this film is on equal par with Goodfellas. Well done again Scorsese & Pileggi.

Fantastic

This is without a doubt, the best film of the 90's. Morgan Freeman is brilliant as Red, his story is just as compelling as Andy Dufrense's. Only repeated viewings made me realise this. Another oscar tragedy that Forrest Gump won best picture over this, typical USA USA carry on. This story also proves Stephen King as a wonderfull writer and not just a one-dimensional horror novelist. So heartwarming, great humour particularly from the head prison guard and the best, most bitter sweet revenge in any film I can think of. A no questions asked 10/10.

Pure Class

This is independent film-making at its finest, with the best ensemble cast to have possibly ever graced the silver screen. Tarantino will never equal this. Jackie Brown, being a pretty good flick seemed totally crap having been Tarantino's long awaited return after this jem. Samuel Jackson plays his best role to a tee here. A clear 10/10

The Corleone Empire
10 July 2002
This is without a doubt, a masterpiece in film-making. Once again, just like the original, the acting and cinematograpy is just incredible. Unlike the original though, this did become a bit boring during the Nevada /Hyman Roth section, although the dialogue and acting was second to none, it did have me yawn for a bit. The epilouge is excellent though with the court-case and final cold-blooded end for the weak willed Freddo. DeNiro is magic here as the young Vito and thoroughly deserved his best supporting actor award, it was a difficult task to fill the enormous shoes of Brando's left behind from his unforegettable performance as the Don in the original but the young DeNiro was fantastic. In my opinion, Robert may have been a better Michael than Pacino. But it was still perfect casting the way it was. A strong 8/10

Slightly Let Down (contains spoilers)
9 July 2002
Warning: Spoilers
I was really looking forward to seeing this film. I had great expectations for it, but I must say I was a bit disappointed. Kudos to the late Philip Dicks, (who wrote this as well as Blade Runner & Total Recall). I must get round to reading some of his other material, he seemed to have so many fascinating visions of the future.

Back to this offering, I have to say that I am a bit of a non-fan of Cruise, he's too much more of a posing superstar than an actor, though I must admit he was excellent in Magnolia. Spielbergs direction was as good as always, though the story didnt move anywhere near as fast as I had anticipated it would. Dublin born Colin Farrell did a good turn as the thorn in Cruises precrime division. I thought the twist of Dr Lamar killing Farrell for the evidence he discovered was far too reminiscent of the end of Kevin Spaceys turn in LA Confidential. Still a very entertaining movie: 8/10

what a clever story!!

This is a class flick. It keeps you guessing all the way through. I've been told that you can watch the film in normal forward(chronological) order on the dvd, that might make the viewer created a different perspective on the film. Guy Pierce is very good in this role. The dark humour is excellent as are the two Matrix cast members; Trinity & Cipher. It is great to see this low budget indie film right up there on the IMDB top 250, which might I add is the best top film survey I've seen. 10/10

why o why??
8 July 2002
This film is terribly bad. Kevin Spacey is a really great actor, he shines in LA Confidential, American Beauty, Usual Suspects, 7 etc.. But this is truly rubbish, he came nowhere near a decent Irish accent, maybe he should have practiced it with Kate Hudson while she was doing About Adam. To Irish people this film is laughable and even worse, its quite irritating for several scenes. I think the producers made this film hoping the target audience (non-europe)would had never seen or heard of the 'General' or Martin Cahill and be enthralled in an intriguing and entertaining story. Total crud!!

Decent film but highly over-rated
7 July 2002
This is a good film as far as youthful, adventurous, summers are concerned. Kate Hudson completely steels this film as a groupie, turning in an excellent performance. However, I dont understand its high rating and think that there are many films in a similar genre that are just as good as this.

Best Irish Comedy Film
3 July 2002
This film is 'deadly'. Colm Meaney was made for the role of the lower class 'Barrytown' Da. Its full of witty dialogue and mad characters. The Commitments comes nowhere near this little gem. Its not surprising that some of the American reviewers were not impressed and called it a depressing film as appposed to a comedy, they probably couldn't understand what was being said or the sheer sarcasm of the characters lines. The fact is that Sharon Curly doesn't really deserve much sympathy, so its also comical how things go so bad on her. Everybody around the world should see this film to garner an opinion.

Very funny underrated 80's flick
14 March 2002
I am surprised that this, well above average 80's comedy scores only a 5.2 from all the IMDB voters. Dan Ackroyd does his usual satirical turn as a con who seizes a great opportunity to steal a contract from his prisons physician. He retreats to California to start his work giving advice on a radio show pretending to be the infamous Dr Lawrence Baird. The only person that knows he's an imposter is the drunken priest (Walter Matthau) who comes along to be pampered by Ackroyd's new found wealth having blakmailed him. Charles Grodin throws in a good supporting performance too. For its genre I think this film deserves the same crediblity as 'Ferris Bueller' or 'Trading Places'. 7.5 / 10
