Touched by an Angel: The Medium and the Message (1999)
Watch it, but don't expect to be amazed.
The one other review in here was wondering why this was the lowest rated episode of them all. When I came in here, I hoped that would be the case and I was not disappointed. I have been binge watching this entire series and I have been very amazed and thrilled that they had never seen fit to do one of those episodes where all they do is show flashbacks from previous episodes to try to tell someone a broader story.
I have always hated that gimmick of every other TV show in history, and they finally went and did it here!!! They jumped the shark!! Alas, what a tragedy.
It still had a moment or three, but ultimately I gave it a 5, which is the lowest I'm willing to go because there is no truly BAD episode of this series. I was pleasantly surprised to see that eight (8) people had rated it a 1, so that was good enough for me.
Don't skip it if you are watching all of them. Just don't expect to be truly amazed in the way that is typical for this series. Even the best of the best can have an off night. ;-)
Touched by an Angel: Missing in Action (1997)
Darren McGavin!
I'm an old Carl Kolchak fan. Anything with Darren in it is a treat! I didn't even recognize him at first. It wasn't till he started talking that I knew who he was. It's because of his role in the Night Stalker series, which I used to watch with my Dad in the 70's, that I first ever imagined carrying a recorder with me everywhere I go, which I do to this day, for over 25 years now!
This was a touching little episode where they made Monica elderly so she could better gain the trust of George, who didn't believe anyone younger than he could properly appreciate someone at his stage in life. He ultimately fell in love with her, and she had feelings for him as well, so much so that her elderly heart was pained when she had to tell him that she couldn't be with him because she was an angel.
After a lot of truths came out from George and other characters that day, it was time for Monica to leave. She met him one last time on the park bench where they first met.
In the end, when he kissed her hand as if to say farewell forever, and Monica herself was sad after having been touched by his affection, something happened that I have not seen in this series before. She disappeared while he was still holding her hand and he looked around in disbelief, only to see the white dove flying away. What a moment!!!! Like waking from a dream!
This show keeps on amazing!!!
Touched by an Angel: 'Til We Meet Again (1996)
A real tear-jerker
This one really made up for the previous one (which was kind of a tough watch).
Tess mentioned to Monica at the beginning that there was a dire family secret, so of course until we found out what it was, everything that happened seemed like it was about to be discovered!
When Chris opened the hat box in the dresser, I was thinking, "Oh boy! Here it comes!!" But no. It came out later in its own time.
They made great use of flashbacks to show various moments that each of the children had with their father as they were growing up to give you a feel for how each of them remembered him in the past.
This was a touching episode where everyone came together in the end, handled the secret and got to say goodbye to their beloved father/husband. And when they all sang the "family song" together one last time, well, that was really waterworks time!
So anyway... this one was good enough that I got an account so I can start commenting. So far, I really like this series. It's interesting that its original run (1994-2003) completely enclosed my marriage (1995-2002) and I had never seen it once. It's taken me over 20 years to give this series a try and I'm glad I did!
I heard Roma Downey on EWTN Radio recently with Raymond Arroyo and thought I'd give it a look-see. I needed something to replace Hunter after I watched all those! This is a bit more gentle than Hunter!! :-D
I'm sure you'll hear more from me here now. If you want to see obsessive commenting, go find Hunter (with Fred Dryer) on YouTube and you'll see my comments on just about every episode for 8 seasons!
