Terminal (2018)
Words Fail Me 😵
I watched this randomly on Amazon Prime because I was searching for a Jack Nicholson film and, predictably, other films came up in the results too, including this one and it was the last day it was on Prime. So, I took a chance and, despite widely varying reviews, decided to give it a go. MISTAKE ! ! My god .. What a stinker of a movie. It's atrocious. 😝 The storyline is crap, the settings are murky and annoying, Margot Robbie's attempt at a British accent was laughable and it was all over the place, the Alice in Wonderland references are repetitive and boring and ...well, need I go on?! Just AWFUL. I only suffered my way through it in the hope that, somehow, it would get better along the way. IT DIDN'T!! Ironically, about 5 minutes from the end my laptop froze and I had to go back to the internet when it unfroze, by which time the film had run out on Amazon Prime (to see it for free) so I then would have had to pay to see the ending! Because I'd almost given up the will to live at that point as the film had bored me almost to death I couldn't have given a damn about those last few minutes and was just glad to get it off my laptop screen!
Not in a million years could I recommend such a sh** movie!
Devil's Knot (2013)
A Good Place To Start To Find Out Information About This Tragic Case
I watched Devil's Knot the other night, not knowing much at all about this case, although I have heard vaguely of it (I live in the UK so here, no doubt, many people, like myself, have not been too aware of it as it hasn't been as publicised here as in America). Overall, I was impressed with the movie and felt it laid out quite well the sequence of events, the 'witch hunt' of the WM3, the horribly poor, unprofessional police work, etc, and towards the end giving the hint that there is at least one other person who may have been the actual murderer. Reese Witherspoon gives a typically compelling performance as Stevie Branch's mother, and the actor who portrayed Stevie was very touching and convincing. The song he sang to his mum at the beginning of the movie and his general air of innocence and fun was particularly moving, as was the scene where he and his friends cycle off into the wooded area and the camera stays focused on them from a distance until the last of their bikes disappears out of view. I felt that most of the cast were convincing in their roles but the only letdown for me was Colin Firth in his role of a Southern legal advocate. Being British myself, I just found him not believable in that particular role and felt that an American actor should have been cast in that instead (usually though he's very good in the roles he plays!).
This film has made me very keen to find out more about this case and particularly the one particular person (possibly two) who, in the documentary West of Memphis, has been shown to be a prime suspect who it seems should have been behind bars for life years ago if only the West Memphis police and other officials in this case had done their jobs properly instead of only having their sights on the WM3 from the outset, regardless of the fact that there seemed to have been not a shred of solid evidence to link them to the crime.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013)
Top Quality, Clever Comedy & Totally Hilarious
I live in the UK and wasn't too aware of this show but just happened to see it in the TV channel listings when I was channel surfing. One day recently it was on and I decided to stop and watch it. My god - I'd been missing a total gem! This show is absolutely hilarious and a total joy to watch. As others have said, it's a blend of great writing, consistency of storylines, amazing cast with the right chemistry, etc, and no annoying fake laugh track, unlike so many weaker American sitcoms. It's a perfect storm of a comedy and maybe even has an edge over The Goldbergs, which I also love. I'm still new to it so I don't even know all the characters' names yet but I will soon! I LOVE it. 💗💚💗💚
We Are What We Are (2013)
An Engrossing, Slow Building Chiller ... Shame About The Ending!
I watched this the other day, on Amazon Prime, with totally 'fresh' eyes - i.e. I'd never heard of it (or the original Spanish version) before and I didn't know who most of the actors were (except for Kelly McGillis). I was torn between watching this and, ironically, another film with Kelly McGillis in (The Innkeepers), but I didn't even know initially that she was in this movie too so when I first saw her in it I found it very coincidental!
Anyway, I'm very glad I watched this movie. Anyone expecting a nonstop, moronic gorefest though should look elsewhere. That's NOT what I was looking for and was looking to watch something a bit more challenging, interesting and less 'lowest common denominator'.
We Are What We are is a slow burner of a movie but from the get go I found it captivating, mainly thanks to the 'moody' setting, the rainy ambiance, the dark colours, etc. It's a beautifully shot movie and the actors were all very good, and I especially liked the performance of the doctor whose daughter went missing and who gradually puts two and two together to realize what became of her. The actor who played the father was also great. There are some gory moments in the movie but few enough that even fairly squeamish people should be able to watch the movie without feeling the need to flee! Having said that, my sister - who HATES scary and horror movies - would probably refuse to watch it!
As the movie progressed the beginning made more sense - i.e. why the mother died the way she did and why she did what she did after leaving the store (re the flyer!).
The only thing about this movie that disappointed me was the bizarre, schizophrenic, unexplained ending. It was way too far fetched and the total turnaround of the younger daughter (not so much the older daughter who is a lot more 'knowing' and calculated) from how she was shown throughout the rest of the movie was totally illogical. It just made no sense, unless she was supposed to be even more 'addled' than the older sister.
Overall I really enjoyed this movie and am glad I happened to come across it quite randomly. I can definitely recommend.
P.S. Some of the reviews for We Are What We are are SOOOOO detailed they're really not fair. To pretty much give away what an entire movie is about is so wrong - people need to review movies clearly and fairly without resorting to giving everything away. Personally, I think IMDb should refuse to publish such spoiler laden reviews.
Fixer Upper Mysteries: Framed for Murder: A Fixer Upper Mystery (2017)
A predictable, super cheesy TV movie with Jewel (who should stick to singing!)
Oh dear, what to say about this TV movie? I'm actually watching it here in the UK at the moment on afternoon TV but it's soooooo cheesy that I've been switching between that and 2 programmes that are far more interesting! The acting in this movie is stilted, awkward and almost cringey to watch, although Colin Ferguson is usually quite good. The closeups of Jewel's facial expressions are inadvertently funny, they're that bad. The storyline is a bit crap in general and the worst bit is ..... Jewel's hair changes all the time! Also her hair looks fake - presumably too many hair extensions. Also, when she sings in the movie she seems to be trying too hard to look winsome and super girly. She's in her 40s now and really needs to steer away from that now and perform a bit more maturely and less sugary!! I do like her music but this is the first thing I've seen her act in and I'm not impressed ... She should stick to the singing!
The Face of Love (2013)
Interesting Film to Make You Think But Should Have Been Better
I just came across this this lazy Sunday afternoon here in sunny old Blighty! From the description, and the actors in it, it seemed to be a movie worth watching.
To be honest, I didn't concentrate on it 100% because I was doing some stuff on my laptop at the same time but I saw most of it. The concept was very interesting and I felt the casting was very good BUT it's definitely a flawed movie. The whole concept of this widowed woman having lost her soulmate husband 5 years previously and then spotting a man who seems to look identical to her late husband, and then embarking on a relationship with him in which, of course, she doesn't reveal to him that the reason she finds him so entrancing is because he's a dead ringer for her late husband, is pretty preposterous! For one thing, if a grieving spouse, or partner, years later met someone who looked identical to their dearly departed soulmate wouldn't they at least want to find out whether that person was a twin and, if so, wouldn't they then want to know why they were never told about the twin by their deceased partner?? So, I was puzzled as to whether Tom was someone who actually really did look identical to her late husband OR whether she was so unstable from trying to come to terms with her late husband's death that she imagined that he was either identical to her husband or perhaps some sort of reincarnation of him, even though he may not have resembled him (if you get what I mean!). Then, of course, there was the scene where the daughter turns up unexpectedly at her mum's house and sees Tom for the first time and freaks out, so that meant that yes, in fact Tom did actually look like the spitting image of her late father.
I found Robin Williams's character, Roger, to be very moving and sad. He wanted more than friendship but she, of course, wasn't interested in that and just wanted to be friends. I'm not sure whether I found this so sad because that can be a sad situation in real life, or whether it was because I found Robin himself so good in that role and also because it was one of his last roles, so that was making me sad too.
Ultimately, as others have noted, the ending was VERY rushed and passed in the blink of an eye, almost literally! I looked down at my keyboard briefly and when I looked up all of a sudden she was in the art gallery being told by a woman that Tom had died and then she was told that yes, he'd done all of the paintings in the last year or so (presumably since the relationship ended) and then she was shown to the painting he had done of her. Then the next thing you know she's swimming in her pool, towards the camera and then she surfaces and is beaming elatedly, looking as if a huge weight has been lifted off her shoulders and she's regained her youthfulness again. Strange ! ! You would think she would have been very saddened by Tom's death not so elated and blissful looking - very, very odd! So, god only knows why she would have been so happy at the end. If that had been me I would have felt awful about having misled Tom about the reason for being with him and I would have felt horrible that he had died ill and alone. Perhaps the fact that Tom had been so creative in the run-up to his death, and had painted that picture of her, had fed into her ego and made her feel worthy and super special !!
Anyway, at least this movie was thought provoking and not as horribly predictable and run-of-the-mill as most of the movies that Hollywood churns out. Also the casting was very good. Oh, and I see that one reviewer commented that Ed Harris was not leading man material and they rabbited on about his bald spot and the pattern of it . . . how weird ! ! I'm assuming that person was a man who has no idea why Ed Harris is so salivated over by so many women. No, he's not 'perfect' looking (whatever that is), he's a mature guy and he may be short in stature, but he is very sexy anyway. Clearly, some people think sexiness is all about looks - any intelligent person knows that's not the case at all! Ed Harris is YUMMY, short height, ageing skin, bald spot and all ! !
Betrayed (2014)
What a predictable, lame movie ! !
Wow, this is a REALLY lame TV movie. I happened to come across it yesterday at the regular 'weekday afternoon TV movie slot' on Channel 5 here in the UK and thought it might be worth watching. How wrong was I??!
Amanda Schull, who plays the stereotypical pretty but annoying female lead, spent 99.9% of the movie with a pained expression on her face and clutching her (very slightly pregnant looking) belly, as if she had a very bad bout of Irritable Bowel Syndrome! Yes, she was supposed to be pregnant, and anxious because of the situation she was supposedly in, but really, we didn't need to see her permanently clutching her stomach as if to spell it out for us. The story line was so pathetic and predictable and how ironic that at the end our 'heroine' was p****ed off at her controlling, devious husband, and lying, devious supposed boyfriend, for lying to her all along when she herself had lied to her husband about having started a relationship with another man, either when she was already pregnant by the husband or quickly became pregnant by the other man. Also, when she was having her hissy fit at them, she stated that she didn't need anything from her husband and would be raising her child herself. How ironic, given that she went running to him for $250,000 when she needed it!! Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.
Of course, there's the token Brit (playing the controlling husband) but also apparently the actor who played the main bad guy is Irish, so he's from my side of the pond! He was actually quite good looking and easy on the eye so when he was on screen the movie dragged a lot less!
Really the ONLY good thing though to say about this crappy movie is that the location was beautiful and, for once, was actually in the location it was meant to be in - America - and not in Canada, masquerading as being in America. Also, some of the furnishings in the rental property were very nice! Other than that though, this movie is only perhaps suitable for viewing by anyone who's brain dead and has the intelligence of a gnat, although I'm sure gnats have more intelligence than to want to watch a movie that's as bad as this one!
If I were ANY of the actors in this movie I wouldn't exactly be in a hurry to add this to my CV - quite the opposite, I'd want to make sure nobody ever found out I'd agreed to take part in something this cringingly bad!
I would have given this movie only 1 star, which is all it really deserves (well, actually it deserves 0 stars but there's no option for that on here!) but I added another star ONLY because the location was pretty!
The Perfect Roommate (2011)
Another Lame Canadian Made for TV Movie (titled 'Dark Secrets' in the UK)
My god, what to say about this movie? It's one of those made for TV movies you come across one afternoon when you're a bit bored and channel surfing and decide to watch to see if it's any good, then when you realise how cheesy and lame the 'storyline' (if you can call it that) is, and how terrible some of the acting is (BOTI BLISS please step forward!!) you can't stop watching it because it's so bad it's entertaining for that reason alone!
I won't go into details about what this movie's about (read some of the other reviews for that!) but it really is very lame and, as other reviewers have commented, Boti Bliss is one of the main reasons it's so bad. With her dark 'pixie' haircut she looked like an Audrey Hepburn wannabe, but failed miserably. She isn't 'femme fatale' or sexy enough to have played that role - she looked more like a bug eyed middle- class suburban housewife with a husband who has an incredibly boring but well paid job. Also, her acting in general was awful and she just wasn't believable in that role. To be expected to believe that William Moses's character would fall head over heels for someone like her was ridiculous.
William Moses seems to have become the Susan Lucci of TV movies and he's not a bad actor so I wish he wouldn't lower himself to be part of crappy movies like this! He can do much better.
Also, I noticed a goof in this movie, which doesn't seem to be mentioned on here. When the daughter rushes from the restaurant towards the end of the movie, after asking her boyfriend to take over her shift because she has to go and warn her dad about what's going on, her hair is in a ponytail, yet at one point when the camera goes to her driving along in her car suddenly her hair is down and not in the ponytail anymore. Presumably, if her character was so frantic to get to her dad before anything bad happened to him she'd hardly have taken the time to change her hairstyle on the way there!
Oh, as for the first review on here of this movie - as someone else has commented, that the reviewer (Coop Burtonburger?!) has given this movie a 10 star review is hilarious! Either that person was associated with the making of the movie or he's connected to someone who was part of the movie - and given that he gushed twice about one of the actresses (I think the actress who played William Moses's character's daughter) I think maybe it was her boyfriend or someone who's obsessed with her !! Of course, the other alternative is that that Coop Burtonburger has recently landed from Mars and this was the first movie he has ever seen and he was so awestruck that he thought it was incredible! Oh, or he could have been as high as a kite when he saw it and reviewed it. Those are the only possible reasons surely for giving a 10 star rating to a movie that should really have a zero star rating ! !
Blind (2014)
Confusing & Trying to be Too Clever
I decided, out of curiosity, to watch this film when it was shown here in the UK late very last night.
Unfortunately, for me it was mostly a flop and I really wish I hadn't wasted 2 hours late at night / early in the morning when I could have been sleeping instead.
Although European movies can often be refreshing, and sometimes downright challenging, to watch in comparison to American movies, which are often very formulaic and predictable, sometimes they can be so abstract and hard to make head or tail of that a viewer can often be left feeling puzzled and confused about what they've just seen. To some extent that is how it was for me with this film - it's abstract, I think it tries to be too clever for it's own good and I was left feeling disappointed.
The apartment where the main character and her husband live is all very 'Ikea' and not exactly homely, which contributes to the film feeling kind of cold and detached. As others have mentioned, there is also a lot of graphic internet porn clips and images which some might find offensive but that I just found more of an attempt to spice the film up and make it more 'risque' and shocking than it really is.
I do think the actress who played the main role was pretty good (and kind of strange looking!) but she couldn't save this movie from being a bleak, dull and confusing letdown.
American Crime Story (2016)
OMG, this is laughably bad ! !
This is being shown here on TV in England at the moment and I was curious to see at least some of it as I remember the whole thing, and the TV footage of the trial, from when I spent a few years living in America in the 90s. Also, a colleague of mine told me she has been watching it and that she thought it was good. Up to now though I haven't seen any of the episodes but it was on tonight and when I was channel surfing I came across it and decided to take a look.
Oh my god . . . where to start?! Firstly, Cuba Gooding Jr as OJ? Really??? Whoever thought that was a great idea should be fired! He's a pretty good actor but physically doesn't bear any resemblance to OJ, save for the fact that both are not Caucasian! As others have pointed out, OJ was physically commanding and with chiselled good looks - Cuba Gooding Jr is much slighter and his looks are not chiselled, more furrowed and slightly mushy! Then, David Schwimmer as Kardashian - huh? Again, he's not a bad actor but seems very miscast in that role. I also don't buy John Travolta in his role. In fact, from what I saw of this particular episode pretty much all of the actors didn't come across well in their roles and the acting across the board seemed stilted and not believable.
I have to say, this was so bad to me that my toes were curling with cringiness and I could only bear to watch about 15 minutes of it before I had to switch to watching something better! The only positive thing about what I've seen of this show was that it made me laugh - which presumably is not the reaction the actors, producers, etc, involved in the making of it were hoping to elicit from the audience!
Alex Cross (2012)
An entertaining Night In Movie
I just came across this on TV, partway through, and found it compelling enough to stop channel surfing and watch it to the end.
I think a lot of people who have reviewed this have jumped on the bandwagon and given it scathing reviews simply because some other people have and, being followers rather than voicing their own genuine opinion, they feel the need to 'tag along' and go along with the negativity.
A lot of people have said it's predictable but, as others have said, in some ways the vast majority of Hollywood movies are (and in my experience, usually the most unpredictable movies tend to come from European countries such as France, Italy and - my home country - England).
Alex Cross is NOT a bad movie and is an awful lot better than much of the usual Hollywood fodder. I thought the actors were all good and worked well together and Matthew Fox was actually more believable, and impressive, in his role than in anything else I've seen him in. I would never have thought he was capable of playing such a ruthless machine of a psychopath but he pulled it off really well and was totally believable.
So, I can definitely recommend this movie and I'd recommend anyone else to give it a go, keep an open mind and ignore most of the negativity about it on here! It's really not bad at all!
Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011)
Snooooozeville ......
I came across this the other night / early morning when I was channel surfing and from the TV description of it it sounded interesting so I thought I'd give it a go as I like a good thriller / drama (good being the operative word!).
Admittedly, I missed the beginning and was tired at the time and on the verge of dozing off anyway, unless I had been watching something incredibly riveting, and this movie was so NOT incredibly riveting that I did actually doze off after the first few hopeful minutes of watching it. The reviewed who likened it to waiting for a kettle to boil for a couple of hours only to realise it wasn't plugged in hit the nail on the head - this movie is so turgid, slow moving and dull it was enough to put me into a catatonic trance. I tried in vain to keep my eyes open in the hope that it would pick up and become more intriguing but it just plodded on and on and sleep took over! I did wake up after about 15 minutes or so but the film was still dragging on lethargically so I decided sleep was much more important than this nonsense and went to bed.
I really can't recommend this movie at all from what I saw of it - it's just bland, boring and dragged on and on and on. It's the kind of movie that potentially could have been good but the storyline was just too vapid and unlikely. What a washout!
Adoration (2013)
Very Disappointing, Lame Movie
I watched this the other night and was expecting it to be pretty good, considering that it stars Robin Wright and Naomi Watts who are both excellent actresses.
Sadly, for me the film was a total flop. I couldn't get beyond the fact that in the movie, Naomi Watts's character seemed only mildly shocked to find out that her best friend had been shagging her son! She then goes and sleeps with the best friend's son, which seemed an unlikely scenario in real life. Also, the fact that the two women remained good friends in the circumstances seemed a bit unrealistic - I mean, I'm very open- minded but if my best friend had been sleeping with my son, even if he was over the age of consent, I'm not sure we'd exactly remain the best of friends because there are some boundaries that shouldn't be crossed and, to me, that would be one of them. Given the fact that Robin Wright and Naomi Watts are both very attractive, intelligent women you'd think that each of their characters in the movie would have found it very easy to meet any number of eligible, handsome, intelligent, sexy men to fool around with or to embark on relationships with so it didn't make sense to me at all that they would resort to shagging one another's sons!
Aside from the beautiful Australian beach scenery, there really wasn't anything to this movie to hold my attention for longer than half an hour or so. My friend was equally bored, or probably a lot more so! Admittedly, I was quite tired anyway but I just found this movie so boring that I started to doze off about halfway through and only fleetingly caught glimpses of what was going on in the latter half of it but couldn't make head or tail of it and didn't particularly care to at that point. So, personally, I couldn't recommend this movie at all except to a) rabid fans of Robin Wright, b) rabid fans of Naomi Watts, c) anyone who enjoys beautiful scenery and d) anyone who doesn't mind wasting an hour and a half or so on lame, unbelievable, wishy-washy movies. I certainly won't be watching it again ! !
Derailed (2005)
Lame movie and wooden acting
I can't believe some of the comments on here about this movie are so positive and glowing! I saw this movie when it was shown on TV here in England and was expecting it to be very good as Clive Owen is usually very watchable. Unfortunately though, I definitely don't think he's at his best in this movie and his acting was very bland. Jennifer Aniston's acting is no better either, which was disappointing because I was hoping that she'd do more with a different kind of role to the ones she usually gets typecast in. Sadly, that wasn't really the case though. I wouldn't say her acting was terrible, just kind of nondescript. Also, the plot seemed very predictable to me, which certainly didn't help matters. I certainly wouldn't have been happy had I actually paid to see this movie but because I saw it on TV I wasn't too bothered. I couldn't recommend it though and can think of better ways to spend a couple of hours than watching lame movies like this.
Toolbox Murders (2004)
Lame Movie
This movie was on TV last night and I decided to watch it in the hopes that it might be quite good. I'd never heard of it before and had no idea it was a remake movie. Unfortunately, I thought it was a pretty dull film and quite predictable. I didn't feel the actors were particularly good either. It might appeal to people who like slasher films and like to see characters being hacked about and fake blood splattered around but for anyone expecting to see something a bit more sophisticated and less gory then I doubt this movie would appeal. The movie definitely had a feel of having been made on a low budget, which isn't always a bad thing and can sometimes be quite refreshing but in this instance it didn't really work for me and it just seemed tacky. I would only recommend this film if someone had nothing better to do with their time than to watch a cheesy horror film, but personally I could think of many better ways to spend my time!
