After We Fell (2021)
blegh.
It's not like anyone believes these movies are going to win any awards (except maybe several razzies), but sometimes they can be fun to watch. But hardin's character is so appallingly manipulative and despicable, it's difficult to enjoy this movie as the fluff it's supposed to be. I don't know how i made it through these 3 films; they progressively got more and more intolerable. There is absolutely nothing endearing about hardin. I don't find hero fiennes tiffin attractive to begin with but he manages to become repulsive pretty damn fast. Yuck.
The Handmaid's Tale: The Wilderness (2021)
flawed but worth it
Not without its glaringly obvious flaws, the satisfaction of fred getting his comeuppance in that manner, as well as giving june and the handmaidens an outlet for their rage was long overdue.
Wish there had been a reaction from serena. Wish the scene with june and luke at the end was done better; too much unspoken for luke to be so stunned and for june saying she was leaving...
The Handmaid's Tale: Testimony (2021)
missed opportunity
I still really enjoy this show. The lows are so darn low that any scrap of high is gobbled up, and it's done well. But i feel it's a missed opportunity in june's testimony. She painted with such broad strokes that I really didn't feel the sheer horror she went through. It could've been done better.
The Dead Don't Die (2019)
so close, yet so far...
I wanted so badly to like this. Wicked ensemble, adam driver is always amazing to watch, but something was definitely missing. Pacing was off, jokes were delivered too slowly, the repetition was more cringey than funny.
Only Murders in the Building: How Well Do You Know Your Neighbors? (2021)
hilarious
I cackled out loud during a lot of this episode. Great dynamic between the three of them. The scene with the cat had me gasping! And "you're being recorded". Oof! Classic steve martin. Love him.
So excited about seeing a good quality show right now!!
The Undoing (2020)
fizzled..
This was a really great watch with an amazing cast. But it was such a build to such a left-field, dramatic finale. He went from maybe sociopathic throughout the series to full-on crazy within the last 30 minutes. poorly concluded but worth the watch nonetheless.
The Glass Castle (2017)
idealizing parental abuse
This really had potential... amazing cast, well acted, beautiful cinematography. however, the significance of parental abuse seemed extremely diluted. the father was essentially made out to be a hero by the end of the film, skating passed all the horrific situations he had put his children in throughout.
everyone has their flaws, no family is perfect, no parents are perfect. i understand the message of loving someone despite their worst attributes (and woody harrelson and naomi watts gave outstanding performances in their roles) but i was really hoping for more of a moment of redemption for the parents. the final father/daughter moments were well done and emotional, but too little, too late, in my opinion! and the real footage at the end further added to the irritation as the father was idolized; painted to have been a great father who just had some quirks, rather than an abusive sociopath. and the mother bore none of the weight or responsibility for allowing those situations to happen to her children. don't make these people out to be extraordinary... those children should've been taken away from them a dozen times over.
Judy (2019)
awkward to watch..
I went into watching this with no real expectations, but wow, i was still let down. i'm shocked by the positive reviews and renee zellweger's oscar win. i really enjoy her in the films I've seen of hers; she's diverse and usually entertaining to watch. but i couldn't wipe the cringe off my face for much of the film.
first, the movie makes it very difficult to like her character (as amazing as judy garland was). i know this is supposed to be about her tragic decline before her untimely death, but they did not touch on the soul of judy garland at all... there was no effort to make her an endearing character, through either timeline.
and zellweger's cringeworthy over-performance... really hard to swallow. she also has these twitchy, convulsing movements when she sings. i tried to look passed it and even decided to look up several of garland's performances to see if these mannerisms originally belonged to her... they did not. judy garland is a blessing to watch; zellweger's homage, not so much.
Little Fires Everywhere (2020)
i didn't like anyone...
Such a disappointment. powerhouse cast (for the most part), but unlikeable characters. i honestly couldn't like anyone... i couldn't root for anybody or any storyline because they all just left a bad taste in my mouth. at first i thought it'd be a show that would thrive off uncomfortable situations, making the viewer confront an unfortunate reality. however, there was never any payoff. not a single character had great enough redeemable qualities that i really wanted to keep watching them.. maybe pearl, but that's definitely not enough to lift the show up from the dreary sludge that it fell deep into.
