Bombay Velvet -- Style without Substance
15 May 2015
If I try to draw comparisons between Martin Scorsese's 1990-blockbuster Goodfellas and our very own Kashyapish Bombay Velvet, they will look like twins, though born in different eras. While the former has already proved itself a masterpiece, the latter simply looks like a wanna-be to that classic.

No wonder that Director Anurag Kashyap credits Mr. Scorsese during the initial credits. He seriously attempts to replicate the master's magic in order to weave out a rather clichéd film. The 60's era looks spectacular; the jazz music (wonderfully composed by Amit Trivedi) throws in an indispensable nostalgia; the Italian costume designs nudge us back to the good-old mobster classics -- everything looks gorgeous in this fantastical post independence Bombay.

But how long you could stare at something beautiful without being talked back to. Bombay Velvet lays itself somewhere in that category, where a beautiful art fails to form a viable communication with its spectator.

The problem lies within the screenplay, oddly written and interweaved with no complex empathy towards the characters. The First Act seems to be the only good asset, where characters are build impressively; wonderfully focusing on traits and motives that build up the next act.

But it is where the narrative loses its pace. Writers -- Vasan Bala, Anurag Kashyap, Gyan Prakash and Thani -- fails to live up to our expectations of genuine conflicts (something Kashyap spectacularly created in the Gangs of Wasseypur duo-logy). We therefore face a regular Bollywood-clichéd tale, where twins arrive out of no where, murders get overdone, songs take over the impressions, and suspenses are injected for the sake of injecting.

Even the ride seems slow and boring at places, the actors make sure to impress us whenever they are allowed to. Ranbir Kapoor (as Johnny "Big Shot" Balraj) conveys madness with style, never losing the grip of the character and giving us a memorable performance. Anushka Sharma (as Rosie) plays a perfect eye-candy amid the distasteful mafia wars. Watch her emoting a sad song with such conviction that it might have reminded Ranbir of his Jordan act in Rockstar. She owns the voice of her playback singer, literally.

Among the supporting actors, only Satyadeep Mishra (as Balraj's childhood friend Chimman) makes a long lasting impact. While other talents (Kay Kay Menon, Manish Chaudhary, and Vivaan Shah) amply justify their skills in their limited screen time. A special mention for Karan Johar for pulling out a calm and restraint act. The script however doesn't allow his Kaizad Khambatta to emote further than a relaxed homosexual mobster.

On whole, I do not want to call Bombay Velvet a bad movie; in fact it is far better than the regular nonsense we are served on most of the Fridays. But being a true Kashyap fan, I believe Bombay Velvet to be only an iota of his previous works, created to prey further on the mainstream audience, with only style but no substance.

What was that??
23 March 2010
Warning: Spoilers
When i purchased the tickets of this movie, i knew i would be watching something different. And of course its Dibakar Banarjee.. I remembered the time when I had no option of watching any big movie on theater, my friends forced me to watch Khosla Ka Ghosla. I fell in love with the cinema of Dibakar right after.

Love, Sex aur Dhoka is the most riveting Hindi film in recent memory. It's one of those films that grab your attention the moment you've settled into your seat, and it doesn't let go till the very end. It's provocative, it's unsettling and occasionally disturbing too. But not for one minute in its roughly 108-minute running time does it allow you to so much as tilt your head down to look at your watch or your mobile phone.

I remember watching slasher scenes in many Hollywood movies but none of them scared me. But a scene from this move did scare me a bit. Dibakar made you fall in love with the cuteness of first story of this movie. You know the characters very well, you know Rahul and Shruti believe in fairy tales, you know they think everything will be all right in the end like Aditya Chopra movies, but you can never guess that this story will give you a heart attack. Dibakar made us feel bad for them. No offense Dibakar, that was ugly but remarkable.

Second Story talks about the flames between a Shop Store employees. In this story, Dibakar creates a very familiar scene among us. Again we know the characters. But yet again Dibakar cheats our mind by portraying how ugly they can be. By a moment we know that Adarsh won't record his intimacy with Neha, he loves her but he fails her. Dibakar makes us feel for the characters.

Third Story talks about the very famous sting operations which are used to allocate TRP's of news channels. Here we see the height of cheapness in one's character but at the same time we see pain in those characters. Naina is prepared to do anything it costs to revenge Loki. She knew she will be marketed as a cheap product yet she puts her ego over her respect. TV reporter Prabhat does the same. He never thinks about Naina until he falls in love with her. So does Naina.

You will be shocked, you will be startled, but walking out of the theater, you know you have just seen what is possibly the most important Hindi film since Satya and Dil Chahta Hai. Not only does it redefine the concept of "realistic cinema", it opens a world of possibilities in terms of how you can shoot films now.

Well done cast and crew. You created history in Bollywood....

An attempt to nourish GOOD and BAD!!!
13 February 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Being a very adverse writer in family dramas, Johar took a step ahead in being more realistic with My Name Is Khan. This movie has morals at top notch that there is only and only one difference between the people apart from their religion. They should be either good or bad. The main protagonist Rizwan Khan, an Asperger Syndrome patient, grew with this line as his talisman. The movie too defines the journey of Rizwan Khan, trying to prove the world and specially the president of united states that he is a good man and not a TERRORIST.

The concept of the movie lies in this punch line "MY NAME IS KHAN AND I AM NOT A TERRORIST" Being very straight forward to his storyline, Johar tries to capture the lives of the Muslims after 9/11 through Rizwan, that how a name could change your life in those times? Some scenes get shot beautifully showing the discrimination with Muslims. The movie although, too, justifies the actual concepts of Islam.

But if we come to problems with MY NAME IS KHAN, you find its length a main issue. Some scenes would have been better to omit. The whole Hurricane sequence seems to be stretched in Johar way.

Come to performances, Shahrukh Khan gives a sensible performance portraying Rizawan Khan but somehow, i should blame it on the movie length, the act sometimes irritates you. But no complains to SRK, he is just doing his best to keep you on seats.

Kajol as Mandira Khan, plays her part beautifully. She should get nominated at least for BAFTA. She is getting better and better in her second innings in Bollywood.

Some fine actors were wasted though in cameos. Pravin Dabas, Sonya Jehan, Vinay Pathak, Sumeet Raghavan, is among them.

At the end, My Name is Khan surely deserves a stand for its simplicity. Its good in parts and tear jerker in some other. Worth a watch.

The slogan is still the highlight "MY NAME IS KHAN AND I AM NOT TERRORIST"

Vishal Bhardwaj meets Quantin Tarantino!!!
15 August 2009
Warning: Spoilers
First ten minutes of the movie and i sensed that this will be going to be a unpredictable ride. As soon Charlie starts introducing his mob life with a supporting and fantastic background score 'DHAN TE NAN', your heart keeps a pace so as the movie. No doubt kaminey is among the best movie ever made in Bollywood. The most difficult movie to made with such zig zag screenplay so you even cant guess where this movie is leading you to. But that is the best thing about Kaminay that you cant guess it.

As for Vishal Bhardwaj, he is one of the best and creative film maker ever seen. His style is totally compete able to Quantin Tarantino. Directing such a difficult screenplay with such ease is his remark. He deserves an Oscar for this.

Shahid Kapoor makes you believe that he has two roles in the movie. The both protagonists, GUDDU and CHARLIE, played by Shahid doesn't even give you a hint that these roles are getting played by a same actor. He shines as a star and steal the show with his remarkable performance. You will leave the theater by pronouncing 's' as 'f'.

Priyanka Chopra, I cant know this lady. Sometime i feel she is worst but with performances like in Fashion and Kaminey, she shines with an attitude and prove me wrong.

Amol Gupte, remarkably talented. He us actually a 'taara zameen par'.

Music rocks.. script Rocks.. Everything rocks about this movie..

Ofcar deferving..

9.5/10..

Didn't care how TOM RIDDLE turned into VOLDEMORT but cared how HARRY POTTER turned into adult
19 July 2009
Warning: Spoilers
******THIS MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS****** A great Opening scene and i held my breath because i knew this was gonna be the best.. Yeah like many says HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE is the best book in potter series. We read it, imagined it, cried, laughed, got thrilled n etc. But this could be great adaption turned into a joke. Yeah a joke. The genre of this movie should be a ROMANTIC COMEDY because it hardly focused on the soul of the book. Apart of burning the burrow to create a fake ectasy, they would have been focusing on at least adding a single 2-3 minute memory of Voldemort's but sorry potter fans, they wouldn't.. Coz they was trying to create a ROMANTIC COMEDY..

I am disappointed coz last five movies was promising and used to leave us in questions for the next one but this movie even couldn't handle that.

No Dumbledore funeral, i wonder how they will gonna use this facts in deathly hallows.

No explanations for horcruxes.. HOW DUMBLEDORE PUT HIS HANDS ON THEM? WHAT KIND OF OBJECTS WAS THE KEEN INTEREST OF TOM RIDDLE? NO KILLING SEQUENCE OF THE RIDDLE FAMILY?? Mind me this could be the best and disturbing sequence of the movie where we could actually see a menace.

NO HUFFLEPUFF CUP? NO DOBBY? NO BILL AND FLEUR? NO DISCUSSIONS OF SERIUS BLACKS'S WILL? A complete waste in the end.. Hope they will do justice to next two...
