Transformers Fans, Where Are Your Voices?
29 July 2023
This is the first time we see the girls in real action. Debbie and Ruth wonder to find true inspiration for their finale match. And then what's the song to fill their epic training montage? "Dare" from the Transformers movies. Not the Shia LeBeouf one. The one where every 80s kids dreams were made of. The Animated 1984 movie. And damn I didn't know that song would work to any other moment but it fit perfectly like a missing puzzle to the 80s heavy style of GLOW.

The first GLOW show also worked. I was pumping my hands to the air like an idiot, and I didn't know why. Evidently, GLOW is not a stupid idea, audience.

Sri Asih (2022)

Dragging... dragging... dragging...
18 April 2023
Dragging... dragging... dragging... great fight sequence... then dragging again... that's what it feels like watching Sri Asih. If you only depend on your super hero fight sequence, you can just be a syrup commercial, because we have those type of commercials here.

I'll point out its flaws as many as I can in this review. First, inconsistent and unlikeable characters. Pevita pearce is sometimes patriotic, but in other scenes, she's like a slacking of character. Her fashion isn't believable either, and it doesn't help make people root for her.

The directing of the opening scene is woeful, was it on autopilot? Also they can make the movie more entertaining by mixing up the plot a little bit, going back and forward. Adding up a little humor wouldn't be hurtful either.

Stealing a bit from wonder woman? I agree. But again, the fight scenes aren't the main problem here.

Plot holes, or can I name them plot holes? It's more like a massive giant hole, were there even a plot to begin with? It's like "where did this character come from?", "where did that character go?", "what is the purpose of this character?", "why is the antagonist doing this?"

I always questioned the decision of making this cinematic universe because I've even seen the best studios crash and burn in attempting to build one of their own. Well if it does succeed... Give a million thanks to the ignorant viewers who support it.

It's a Good-Old Ant-Man Movie, so Chillax...
18 February 2023
Okey, so it's got a 50 something metascore and a 50 something tomatometer. But hey, I've seen bad movies in my life, and this third installment of Ant-Man is definitely not one of them.

It introduces Kang, and Kang is cool, check. Many to anticipate for that one in the future. M. O. D. O. K steals the show, check. Every time he's on screen you'll have at least a little giggle. It is very "star wars"-like, check. It's a movie about a conqueror stuck in a quantum realm filled with quantum people, you connect the dots. Michelle Pfeifer and Katherine Newton live up the movie, check. They are refreshments and they look-like they've been hanging around in the MCU from the very start.

So all of those are good things. Even on top of that, it's an every routine Ant-Man movie, where Paul Rudd is funny, heist things are cooking-up, he grows big, he turns small, full of smacking and kicking, and that just adds up the fun. There are no need to worry about anything turning bitter and hateful. Just go to the movies and throw your money at it. I even liked this more than Thor 4 and Dr. Strange 2.

Definitely felt the 10 mach in the studio
26 May 2022
The force is strong in this one. It hits hard on the emotion as well on the action. Full packed, exceeding anything you hoped for from it. Do you want your money back after watching this? Not at all. You'll be wandering if you payed enough. Maverick gave me 10 mach, and I'll give him 10 stars.

The epitome of dispair
8 June 2021
You know great entertainment can give you all sorts of feelings and what this episode gives you is dispair. It took me some days and some other episodes actually to see the light again. The direction of this Anime especially this episode is really something else.

A Treasure Hunt Movie That finds Gold for Everyone
25 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Every time people badmouth something gold, I have the itch to right something wrong.

This movie is a best possible way to give homage to everybody's beloved "The Goonies". A family movie that is not shallow, heartful, rich on social commentary, and rewarding.

How can people say the acting was bad?! I almost called out for kleenex. Seriously, if you don't like good movies, just go back to your super hero flicks...

This is a family piece every adult should try to show to their loved ones.

Warning: Spoilers
We live in an age where a campy movie is actually good and an average movie that's trying to look good is actaully very bad. This is that.

I imagine toddlers that don't know their way through the rich history of hollywood movies came up with the idea of this movie. It really leaves you with a bad taste.

Good movie, but not up there with the best
18 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
A movie from the same director of The Body. While I was blown away by that one, this one, not quite so.

Guessing by all the hype surrounding the movie, I figured this will be a guessing movie, where in the end we have to guess who the culprit is. By doing so, unfortunately I managed to guess the outcome, the possibilities are so limited, it just brought my self to one possibility that turned out to be true.

All I have to say to people who are satisfied by seeing this movie is that you should watch The Body instead, because that one is the true work of art.

That being said, I'll still be anticipating the next movies the director will offer in the future.

As real as it gets
20 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
If this movie is raving with bad reviews that is a good sign that the message of this movie has reached its purpose: millenials are no match for old generations that went through the real deal hell in the past.

Go ahead and suck your baby thumb up your nose. This movie is so that we appreciate the actual heroes in the field, not made up super heroes that this generation has decided to cheer for.

The Heartfelt Movie You've Been Looking For
1 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I am an old fan of dorama series. I've been sticking to it from the ages of long vacation till GTO and suddenly I hit the saturation barrier and have left the genre for about 10 years. It just suddenly felt borring, just untill this series caught my attention.

The series is very light and heart warming you'll just want for more and long for the next episode. It's the very reason I watched dorama in the first place. The story is also interesting to follow, the characters feel real, and Issey Takahashi is really gifted in his face expressions.

I am also a university lecturer so I can relate to some of the stories. I'm giving it an 8/10 but I'm willing to give it a 10 just so that people will give it a chance and appreciate it more.

Different Taste but Same Magnitude
30 May 2020
Gareth Evans moved taste from The Raid gangster movie to the pagan horror movie, Apostle. Do I, as a true lover of The Raid 2, feel betrayed? No. Because I'm a pagan horror lover too. I just watched Midsommar and from there I started my pagan horror adventure. As a result I watched the original wicker man and was very impressed.

Midsommar is very satisfying but if you feel "defeated" in the film, then Apostle, on the contrary, will reciprocate that feeling. In terms of its homage to Wicker Man, this film is like giving a different perspective to the film. This film feels like the "what if" version of Wicker Man.

Dan Stevens might be the new "Iko Uwais" for Gareth Evans, and if Iko Uwais is very good at being a hero by stating, this can't be done by Dan Stevens in the same way. So Gareth Evans is very clever to give us the same bloody film but wrapped in horror, not crime.

The funny thing is, what Gareth Evans has done is arguably the opposite of his director friend, Timo Tjahjanto. If Gareth Evans moves from Crime to Horror, Timo who was famous for his bloody horror, Macaber, now handles Crime films like "The Night Comes For Us" very well.

As I am a supportive fan for Iko Uwais, I also follow Dan Stevens from his films such as The Guest, the Legion series, Beauty and The Beast, and Colossal. Dan Stevens always shows a different character in every film and he carries it well. In this film he also shows his versatility by giving a character that he had never shown before.

Bravo for Pagan Horror, violent films, Apostle, Gareth Evans, and Dan Stevens.

Engaging
1 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
What do you get if you come accross a spy that gets prosecuted because she told the press that the government is fraudulent? You get four movies with the price of one. That's right, official secret is a politic movie, an espionage movie, a courtroom movie, and a journalism movie at the same time.

An engaging story with a stellar ensemble british cast consisting Keira Knightly, Matt Smith, Mathew Goode, Rhys Ifans, and Ralph Fiennes. It leaves you wondering, after all the sacrifice these people have bought (both the real characters and the crew bringing them to the movies), would the people get the message? Sometimes it isn't about not being loud enough, sometimes people just can't seem to appreciate.

Great Modern Western
28 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
People who say this movie is boring do not know how to appreciate interesting plot, strong acting, and true production making. They probably don't even like western movies to start with.

This is a great addition to a collection of modern western movies like 3:10 to Yuma, True Grit, Open Range, and Bone Tomahawk. Joaquin Phoenix and John C. Riley blend into a perfect duet to create an entirely fresh kind of cowboy action.

The director of "A Prophet" did a great job to bring this movie to life. I can see some trademarks of his previous movie embedded into the film.

Joker (I) (2019)

DC Allegory
12 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
While Phoenix was amazing from the first scene, I think DC tried a little bit too hard to live up to the amazing standards Late Ledger has left us.

Infact I see this movie as an allegory of DC in this decade of movie. Joker is the personification of DC itself. DC movies has been mocked heavily in the past decade through it's films Man of Steel, Suicide Squad (and Leto), Batman vs Superman, and Justice League. Being mocked so hard DC turns into madness and makes this sadistic movie (to kill "Marvel", who is Marvel in the movie? You'll probably get it when you see it).

I admit, Joker is sadistic, Joker is crazy, but has he been portraited doing graphic violance before? I remember him in the 60s series, in the 90s cartoons, in Jack Nicholson. I remember Heath Ledger Joker breaking a pool stick in half for tryouts but I can'r remember him really butchering anybody. The lengths DC took to relive the Joker went just too far, this is not comic book movie anymore. I mean, Deadpool is an R rated movie but still has a comical sense. Joker has just thrown them away to adapt this kind of movie. The kind of movie that even if I like, I like them better being a scorcese movie, a gangster movie, a courtroom movie, a noir movie, or a biopic.

Well as I see, the Joke is still on you DC. But Phoenix, I hope you get your Oscar!

Something Quite Rare Nowadays
8 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
How long have you seen a new low budget movie? This movie was made out of a budget of 6 million dollars. The set is only around the house, it has only 20-ish casts, most of them probably for the early wedding scene. Yet so gripping, yet so eerie, top notch CGI only when needed, nothing un-necessary.

This movie checks the box for a top low budget movie. This movie checks the box for a top home invasion movie. This movie checks the box for a top limitied cast movie. This movie checks the box for a top enclosed space movie. Something quite rare to find nowadays.

And finally a Margot Robbie that I can root for (I seriously spent the whole movie thinking Samara Weaving was another actress)

This time we join the review
4 June 2019
So many people here fighting to sound the real values vs the godzilla sized bad reviews about the movie so here I am joining the fight: Godzilla-KotM is all about Giant Kaiju to Kaiju action, so unforgetable that people can't stop telling tails about Godzilla, King Ghidora, Rodan, or Queen Mothra.

So theres a part in the beginning of the movie where Godzilla does a little "Top Gun Maverick" fly by in front of the "Kaiju Lover secret organisation" The Monarchs. The Monarchs were off their seats, stunned and terrified and so were the audience. That scene was probably a representation of the reaction of the audience throughout the whole movie.

Cool fight scenes. Rodan's introduction in Mexico was probably the most intense part of the movie. From cool jet manuvers, giant futuristic flying motherships, city chaos, even a david stathairn cameo. The bomb probably struck the audience because we were all holding our breathe until ghidora made his awesome mountain stance.

The king vs king rivalry starts far before that so what we're having here is a fast burner movie, compared to the mellow first movie staring quick silver and scarlet witch.

So many characters involved but none of them wasted. Interesting dialog (not at all stupid, if you want to know what stupid dialog sounds like, watch a transformer movie).

Charles Dance making deep voice Tywin speciality speeches. Vera Farmiga touching as always. Kyle Chandler helming the action. We all missed Ziyi Zhang, and here she is now (speaking english).

Milly Bobby Brown, I never heard of her before but now I'm all aware. Sally Hawkins and Ken Watanabe re-introduced to welcome new characters. Thomas Middleditch from Silicon Valley, throwing worthless comic relief we probably needed more than we knew. Bradley Whitford delivering scientific speech from all kinds of departement (I can't imagine all the degrees his character has).

Aisha Hinds from 9-1-1 and Oshea Jackson Jr. (a.k.a. Ice Cube Jr.) Also introducing Elizabeth ludlow in the mayhem and artilary section.

So many aspects. I appreciate Director Michael Dougherty (Krampus) at least blending all these together with right balance without any of them disrupting the other. Mothra was probably the loose canon here, but you can judge by yourself.

Can't wait for another giant monster showdown. King Kong? Gamera? Bathra? Mechagodzilla? Ultraman? Bring them on and let them fight!!!

Godzilla (I) (1998)
7/10
Good memory vs Bad Reality
29 May 2019
No it's not my first time watching it in 2019. Godzilla King of monsters is out in theatres and HBO decided to capitalize and show us this on their channel. So considering it will be a long time until I watch the new version (I'm broke after Endgame, John Wick, and Aladdin hit the theatre, I don't even have a penny to watch Detective Pikachu) I'll do an update review of this movie.

When you are a grown up and watch something that was so hyped in the past you get a chance to have two points of view, the old one, and the new one. On before, I watched MIB like this and was amazed that the new point of view of MIB was even better than the last time I watched it. In fact, I remember having a really good time seeing it when I was a kid, so it's pretty brilliant to top that. And now it's time for 1998 Godzilla. Well, I'm giving it to you straight, Godzilla did the exact opposite effect of MIB.

So I was wondering, what would 1998 top notch visual effect look like in 2019. I have to admit, very very bad! I would like to elaborate two sides of that very very bad aspect: 1. the good side: 120 million dollars as to be said of the budget of Godzilla (that would be a Godzilla size budget for 1998) shows its worth. I was amazed how all the cars in a new york street jumped simultanously each time godzilla thumped a step, neatly done 2. the bad side: Every godzilla moment in the city from CGI aspect is awfull, so you can say, god-awfull. It's like your not even trying to become an all time legendary movie with this effort. Whereas I can remember, the soundtrack of this movie was super, and every movie trying to be the best must have a super list of soundtrack, so why the bad cgi? as for the animatronix were basically awesome, so I think it should've done better. and probably that's my one most problem with this movie.

I don't really care about the silly cast every body is talking about, they work on their own way as far as I'm concerned. The plot is also not that bad. Worm scientist? French Agents? Bad old girlfriend journalist stealing tape? None of them is a problem for me, it's actually quite a good twist. Jean Reno was a powerhouse in that time, so putting in the french country intervension plot was probably the best Idea.

As for every aspects needed for a Godzilla movie? I think the movie checks out all the important points: 1. wrecking cities: check (the most important city in this case) 2. emerging from the ocean: check (with great memorable visual effects). 3. great footprints in the earth: check. And then, one more: spitting fire, It took so long for godzilla to spit some fire so I'm quite disappointed in that too.

Also, baby godzillas pretending to be raptors? bad jurassic park rip-off! Steven Spielberg and all his fans and crew should be mad! and also they move silly so there's not much tension in that part of the movie either.

I'm starting to wonder what Roland Emmerich is doing these days because He's probably surprised how rich he is from repeatingly tricking everyone into watching all his movies.

1998 Godzilla you are not more than a good memory with a bad taste, now I should probably fill in the bad parts with, what, the good dinosaur?

My Family Enjoyed It and That's what Matters
25 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
So it's no citizen kane, but does it matter? No. Because my whole family had a really quality moment through out and even weeks after the movie.

So i think rotten tomatoes got it a little bit wrong this time.

My mom who sleeps through almost any movie watched this movie with joy.

My four year old daughter cheered and cried through the movie. She still sings Speechless untill now. A song that if until this time of the year no serious competition arrives soon I think will be a serious contender for Oscars.

You have never seen anything like this
24 May 2019
At the end of john wick 2 you would probably be sceptic by asking yourself "what else can they put on the table".

But then in john wick three the creators simply answer "a lot, like really a lot, you aint seen squat"

This chapter of john wick does't only expand the universe but also our experience, not only in watching the series, but also watching movies.

There are many to see here, from over the top typical every minute bloody john wick action, to fancy dialogue. My wife screaming "Thank god we didn't bring our kid" in the first five minutes would probably give you an imagination of what to expect.

My only complaint is probably the loose ending, but I hope time gives me a better perspective.

Also it ends with a cheer for an even more exciting and broad universe of chapter 4.

Flawed
24 March 2019
I was searching for a Islamic themed Indonesian movie and I came across this movie. Although it doesn't have the signature "hijab in X foreign country" attribute it still checks several important marks.

The movie tries to preach a lot about Islam and Islamic marriage and islamic husband character, islamic wife character, in a good fashion, but still bargains for a sub-par "sinetron" (soap opera in Indonesia) like ending.

It could have gone for the high notes by adding messages of "tawakal", a part of three strong Islamic characters to carry the main characters through the movie but didn't so. So I couldn't give more praise.

I do give a lot of credit for the two main characters (even for the supporting characters in this case) for their acting, especially for Velove Vexia who looks so drawn deep into her main Islamic woman character. The story also brings the audience to some high point emotions although like I said before did not go for the kill to end the movie with a great bang.

I appreciate the development of Indonesia's movie making. Character developments aren't as narrow as before, more three dimensional characters are introduced in each movie.

Everything that could happen, happened, but you wouldn't mind, because it's an everybody's favorite good old marvel movie
7 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this movie the second day it was released in my country just because two things: I couldn't wait for End Game and I don't want to get spoilered about the movie. So there I was, persuading my family to a not-so-family movie, luckily we all had a good time.

It was all we hoped for from a Captain Marvel + Fase 4 introduction. It's a showcase of the great powers of Captain Marvel. In this movie Captain Marvel shows her true powers and will get you wondering, how the hell can she do all that. But a little research will help you complete the puzzly pieces. It worked for me. While it made us raise questions about new things it also answers some old questions to get us prepared for the long (well it feels long) awaited End Game movie. The movie had fast pace in the beginning to show us strong relationship between Carol and Fury in the middle and a bombastic ending.

As for other elements. First, Goose the Cat will actually steal the show, but you wouldn't mind. Second, it is a feminist agenda movie, but a little subtle, so you wouldn't mind either. Third, it is set in the 90s, but viewers hoping for heavy nostalgia won't get it because they aren't that heavy (not as heavy as what 80s did to the bumblebee movie), and you wouldn't mind either.

For a bonus, I did get some "french connection" nostalgia in the car + train chase scene, but that's probably just a coincidence, noting that there are no nessecities the two of the movies should be connected. But being connected does mind either. There is also a bonus twist, just to entertain the fans.

Don't forget to wait for the two end credit scenes, because that's probably why you watched the movie anyway.

Dirty Grandpa (2016)

A Rip Off of a Not So Great Movie Either
1 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The first time I watched this movie, it was bad. Even the charisma of Zoey Deutch and Robert De Niro can't help the mediocracy breathing through each vain of the movie. The ending was so "straight to video" level, I can't help but to wonder "Why can a movie like this get produced into a full lengthed feature film?"

Then after, I happened to rewatch an 80's movie "Who's That Girl" starring Madonna and suddenly it strucked me: "Dirty Grandpa is a rip off of Who's That Girl". At first I didn't want to call it a "rip off", I would prefer "a reference" or "a homage" but Google did not back me up with any evidence connecting the two.

So both of them have different stories but the same elements. Both of them are about marriages, the two stories are about a man doing errands before his big day. The difference here is that in Dirty Grandpa, the main character picks up his Grandpa, in Who's That Girl, the main character picks up a mysterious woman. Both the grandpa and the woman have "crazy" characters. Both the main character are laywers but want to be something else. Both marriages are canceled in the end of the story. Both main characters get attached to another girl. The Bride in both stories are annoying.

If I have to choose wich is better, I would choose Who's that Girl. At lease that movie made me have several rewatches when I was little. Even now I think Who's That Girl is backed up with a more grown up script.

So the mystery is solved. If you are wondering "Who the hell gave an Idea to a such frivolous movie" you have an answer. It's a rip off of a not so great movie from the past

Viewers Will Appreciate it in Time
31 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this movie late (as a true star wars fan, three weeks is pretty late) and it wasn't the kind of movie I was hoping for, in a good way.

For me this is the most philosophical "Jedi" movie of all in the franchise. So the title "The Last Jedi" is right on place. The writer-director Rian Johnson is also a director with reputation (I liked brick, and well, looper has its geeky fans).

Yes, it was quite a sharp turn from Star Wars 7, but I don't really like that movie. It's like a remake of Star Wars 4 made for fans of the harry potter generation. This Star Wars is the most thinkable star wars, it really gets you involved with all the philosophy of Jedi.

Where IV to VI was the introduction to Jedi, I to III was the ideals of the Jedi (and a bit naive about it), this looks like an adult concept to the Jedi, a worn Jedi philosophy, the Jedi philosophy that has went through the hardness of life, the tested Jedi philosophy. It also shows in the fighting scenes, where as in I to III, Jedi fighting scenes were more like dancing, here we see emotion, power, mundane nature in rei's movement.

The war scenes were a bit of a blow, but it's ok because it gives more of the Jedi story a place to shine.

The only problem I got with the movie is probably the length of the movie. It looked like it was gonna reach its peak at the Snoke scene but turned out to have another lengthy scene with the gorilla walkers. (I have a little girl waiting at home, so yes, length is a bit sensitive)

I'm sad about the reception and score of the movie here at IMDb, at rotten tomatoes it is more well accepted. I hope that it becomes a cult movie in the future. Time does shape the quality of a movie.

As a part of the new star wars movies, I rate this between Rogue One and Episode 7. Its 10 as a Star Wars Movie, but 8 as a movie in my collection (8 is the biggest score I'm going to give to a franchise movie). Star Wars is still a big part of my heart.

Halfworlds (2015– )

This is not it
10 January 2016
If you think this is Indonesia's TV Show wake up call, then you're wrong. This is not it! I wrote this review just so people would not hope so much from the series.

I watched most of the first season just because I hoped things will get better the next second, but it never happened, well it was sometimes "it's gonna happen", but it did not. The development was so slow, when the finale came it was like the story was still trying to start and then it was end time. Probably my cruel judgment was because Halfworlds had the same schedule as Game of Thrones so I'm unconsciously comparing this serial to one of the greatest serial ever made.

In my opinion the acting (of some of the characters) were bad. This goes to Coki, Sarah, and Pinun. Acting is not the same as being a snobbish socialite. You can't blame Ario Bayu for all the experience he has, but his acting was too theatrical. One sentence per minute will not bring us anywhere. It is the time of fast development stories. If the audience can't catch up they can re-watch. I give extra credit to Adinia Wirasti and Arifin Putra for outstanding acts.

The fighting choreography were sub-pare. They weren't bad but if you want a movie to be half mostly about fighting you should make the fighting scenes something to wait for, right?

The kissing and nudity are out of place. If you want to put nudity in art it must mean something. All the kissing and swearing were like they are telling the audience "Hey, we're Indonesians but we're kissing and swearing, ain't that cool?". No it's not cool, it's a pity, and it's ironic.

At the end, this serial just looked like a rude mess. Please comeback with a full cooked plot and casts with serious intentions.
