This was a stupid stupid movie
20 December 2015
How stupid was this movie? Bad story, same old decades old music, clichéd punchlines...

There were no inspirational characters...

It is such a shame this movie will still make profits...

Could they have not learned anything from how Star Trek makes its sci fi movies generation after generation?

Why does Star Wars have to be so lame...

And don't even get me started on the ending...

The rolling robot was somewhat watchable though and deserves the lion's share of the profits...

And the scene of harnessing the Sun was such a blatant copy from Star Trek...

This movie was strictly for six year old and less who can brandish their sword in theater and still have sufficient imagination left in themselves to ignore the pathetic reality the actual movie is...

Full disclosure: I fell asleep after one and a half hours of "pakaowww pakaowww" torture...

Very ordinary

Positives first: 1) Beautiful cinematography. Film has beautifully captured the sense and sights of a period long gone past. 2) Performance of Paran Banerjee and Saswata - as authentic as it gets

That's about it. Overall, a waste of a evening - the much hyped feminist director Aparna Sen still fails to deliver on a setting so intimately known to her. The dialogues are run of the mill, Konkana's acting is like a jatra, missing genuineness, a most ordinary storyline with a highly nyaka 3rd half.

I had sworn I would watch this movie till the end no matter how bad - I kept my promise till 2 hours and 20 mins, and then gave up.

Amazing movie

All Shyam Bnegal needs to depict the pain of partition is 1 room and 3 characters. This movie is a must watch. The ending is a bit flimsy (I think it would have been the best to end the movie when Riyaz sees the train carrying Mammo going away - but maybe that would have sent a wrong message). The performance of Farida Jalal, small Riyaz and the Nani is superb in every respect. I particularly liked how beautifully the director depicts the emotions of a teenage boy growing up. The birthday party scene felt very very real. The dark underbelly of Bombay is beautifully portrayed. Only the acting of Riyaz's friend was not perfect but still OK. This movie makes you ponder. Thank you Shyam Benegal!

Disappointing
18 July 2009
It is possible that being the 6th movie in the series it is unreasonable to expect a lasting impression. But I think the movie has been very sloppily made - the dialogs poorly written, the narration badly organized, the ending too abrupt (even though I concede it has to follow the book). While i did not get bored (the game of 'quidditch' alone as usual makes it worth watching), I felt the movie left a lot to be desired. I have not read the book but the plot seems very weak. I hope the last part is being made with more care and less hurry. Given people's expectations and the sure money earner that it is, why cant the movie director be more thoughtful in his presentation and not give it a 'commoditized' feel.

very ordinary boring clichéd movie
28 February 2009
I went to see the movie seeing an IMDb rating of 7/10. I was deeply bored. The script was all over the place. The plot was underdeveloped and the climax was very ordinary. The only one time I felt captivated was the shooting scene at Guggenheim. Whoever wrote the screenplay left a lot to be desired . The dialogues were so run of the mill. A lot of unnecessary mystery is brought in with trivial solutions. All the reference to funds being used for terrorism were cursory. Terror funding plays little or no role in the plot as such. The movie has NOTHING to do with terrorism. And the lead actor was always tense and monotonous. This is not worth a dime.
