Pure "Frontier Humor" at its best!
22 January 2023
The quote "Frontier Humor" is from the movie. That sums up this amazing movie. "Little Rita of the West (A. K. A. "Crazy Westerners") is mind blowing. The fact that it is a "Spaghetti Western" - made in Italy a week after the Spaghetti Western was born - and its a rock n' Roll musical exists tickles me to no end!

The songs are catchy and memorable...even if you don't understand what they are saying. I'm shocked this movie didn't get on the Midnight movie circuit. It has everything Rocky Horror has.. but its not a parody or spoof of the Spaghetti Westerns..as they just started making them a year or two prior. "LIttle Rita of the West" is its own glorious creation.

There are some scenes where it drags. Mostly one or two in the middle ..and at the very end. There is one moment with Terrence Hills character that brings up a personal story for him..but gets totally dropped not 2 minutes later and never brought back up.. but at that point, you don't care as it doesn't effect the main and Rita's story at all.

Why people rate this below a 7 out of 10 baffles me.

Stunning animation and style... story and character...meh
11 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The animators worked very hard to make something visually stunning. I wish they put as much effort into characters we can have an ounce of empathy for - especially the main character; the mute little girl. She ran around the village stealing, disobeying her mother and being an all around uncontrolable pest. The other characters as written were 1 dimensional. Interesting contrast to the 2.5D animation

The actors gave amazing voice performances.. with a script that is heavily based on a book of poetry. Each poem went on and on far too long. - Mind you, I am not a fan of poetry.

What I was entertained most by this film is the endless string of "Executive Producers" and "Co- Executive" producer credits.

Of course, if you are a fan of Gilbran; you might like it..

Trite, pretentious, predictable
5 July 2022
The "good guys" are all without flaw.. this is the first sign of bad writing. The second sign is when the "bad guys" are totally flawed. There is no subltly. No genuine moments for any character for anyone to care for at all.

This is hands down one of the worst movies ever made.

Dull, lifeless, unimaginative
25 June 2022
And those are the good parts of this movie. The description claims its a "thriller" about a "prophecy" and the possible end of the world. All we get are dull witted, poorly written characters and a "plot" that does not even kick in until well over half way through. At that point, I honestly wanted all the whiny, bitchy "characters" to actually reach the end of the world.

If it didn't have the "end of the world prophecy" plot tacked on... it would have still been a crap movie.

It really sucks.. in the pejorative sense.
18 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The sets were either borrowed or stolen from the ultra low budget Alaskan made film: "Space Trucker Bruce" . The "story" revolves around a band of soldiers flying around space hunting Vampires for a private company. The first and only question that came to mind is how a private company can make a profit hiring professional soldiers to kill Vampires? Its briefly explained in the first 10 minutes in a few lines of dialogue when the band is on a mission on the planet Vancouvira - btw, all the "different" planets they land on look a lot like British Columbia, Canada. The space cowboy takes a picture of the lead vampire..in broad daylight just before they behead him to collect his bounty. I honestly doubt bounty hunters make this much money to fully arm and supply to hunt vampires all over the galaxy. Plus, it seems odd that they never tell us if they are special ammuntion that does kill them .

Heck, there are so many inconsistencies with not just the vampires, but every single character and story, it made me want to sleep. When it came time for the big "surprise" 'twist" ending.. I didn't care. The writers had this absurd "the evil humans" colonizing *our" indigenous planet nonsense was too much to swallow. I mean, who honestly empathizes with blood sucking beasts?

Yes, it is pretentious art house crap
18 June 2022
The blurb on the back claims there's a family curse which is *supposed* to be a main focus of this story. However, little mention of said family curse comes into play at all. There are no consistent characters or focus in this cheaply stylized art house crap.

Plus, one of my pet peeves in any Vampire story is a lack of consistent rules for vampires ..which Nadja is guilty of. There was not one character to root for at all.

Wish I could rate it 0 stars.
18 June 2022
The "vampires" rules are inconsistent at best. Not sure how any of them actually get human blood as they all seem to isolate themselves from humanity. A few can be seen in broad daylight without a burn.. some burn with the teeniest beam of sunlight.

The "story" is so flimsy, I couldn't bother paying attention enough if there was one as the writing, acting and directing was so awful, I didn't care for anyone on screen. Ron Silver has done some fantastic acting in his career.. this is where he's having his assistant phone in his performance for him.

Avoid this drivel at all costs.

Dull, lifeless and pretentious
26 May 2022
The dialogue is silly and trite. If it were delivered by a real actor, it could have worked. However, the lead "actor" could not sell this at all.. Watching it, I felt that Patrick Wharburton could have sold the silly dialogue flawlessly...but alas, the producers of this "movie" wanted to cast their friend who clearly should never try to act again.

I don't get the hate for this movie at all.
19 February 2022
Boorman lets the audience know this film is going to look silly, but has a serious tone right away. The films tone and style is consistent all the way to the end.

When at least I got to the ending of how crazy this world was ("The Penis is evil.." still makes me giggle AND think ... that yes, humans can indeed build a society that could produce that thought.

Zardoz reminds me a bit of the Classic Star Trek episode "Spock's Brain" Where we find two separate societies have grown almost utterly dependant on technology the have lost control of generations ago. Both the TV show and this movie are nearly identical in the themes they present...and both are presented with a silly visual style. Both are fused together strongly as presented.

Zardoz is a darned near flawless film.

I'm not kidding.

Avoid this movie at all costs!
19 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is one of the worst movie I have ever seen in my life.. and I've seen "Winslow, The Christmas Bear". At least that movie had a main character and clear cut goals.

However, the script, overly written by the star and director spews out a whole lot of nothing. There's supposed to be a "Big Chill" type effect ...a funeral that re unites old friends and family...but honestly, the main character is so self absorbed and 1 dimensional.

The ONLY character in this film is the token white guy who gets beat up who generates ANY shred of empathy. Otherwise, every other character in this film is essentially a "professional victim" Not one actor can act... Then again, it may fall back on the heavy handed, inconsistent script - and possibly the "director" not knowing how to get the actors to show depth.

After the first 10 minutes into this movie, the lack of depth, self awareness and/or insight to any character in this movie had me looking at memes instead of captivating my attention.

The non-linear editing was noticeable instead of seamless. It often drew attention to itself... which is sadly the parts of the movie I was engaged in. Sadly, when it jumps from character to character.. you don't know when or where it takes place. As each scene goes on, it left me wondering what relevance does this have with...anyone else in the film? Occasionally, one or two scenes pop up and have some bearing on the characters...but not enough to keep me rivited.

PS, you can tell when the credits should start rolling...when this woman starts singing this off key "Enya-esque" melancholy song and the screen
  • eventually - fades to black....

and its still black...

and its still black...

and its still black....

FINALLY THE CREDITS ROLL... THAT'S the best part of this movie.

Cliche ladien; yes - but not totally dull.
17 December 2021
The script has flimsy, predictable, cliche laiden stories and "character" developments that anyone can see miles away, but the cast seems to have fun. Even the Late Peter O'Toole manages to shout out a final big cliche ladien speech with some ...Peter O'Tooleness - which is always fun to watch.

The first 5 minutes of the movie one can see the ending coming at that moment, however, the very moment Chis Elliot shows up on screen, that does tend to throw out some of that predictability. His presence does tend to liven up the film. Plus, the Kinkade sons father also tends to throw in a few Un-Hallmark like moments that confuse the heck out of me.

Jo Bob Briggs says: you should watch this (only once though)

Totally underwhelming
2 October 2021
Cheap rip-off of seven, silence of the lambs etcetera. The story is flimsy especially at the half way mark when it takes an unesescary turn. The acting is sub par. Robert Englund does a good job..even though his character and situation is poorly written.

Well written and accurate
1 September 2021
To people who have only seen live theater in the audience, some may think this is a gross over exaggeration of the characters and situations portrayed therein - you would be wrong. I have been a theater junkie for 40 years. I have known each and every character in this show that some moments for one or two characters brought up memories long forgotten.

What impresses me most about the writing is each character is flawed...but no one is trying to "fix" anyone ...not even the main character who is literally insane. On several occasions, I found myself screaming at my TV for the characters to not be so stupid.

Then I had to remind myself; it's just a TV show.

Nightbirds (1970)

God Help me, I am an Andy Milligan fan...
30 June 2021
Mind you, most his films are cheap, and full of anger.

Nightbirds is a breath of fresh air as Andy has toned down his anger and generally every single character trying to out manipulate and lie to each other. Since there are essentially 2 characters throughout 90% of the movie.. the Boy is actually charming, calm and a little naive. The Woman seems nice at first..but he gets lured into her via desperation and her charm.

If you read Jimmy McDonnughs biography of Andy, it was no secret that he HATED women. Thought they were all lying manipulators. This was no exception - except she was not so angry. Even if you didn't know Andy's previous works, this still stands out on its own merits as an engaging take on two peoples lives.

Y'all forgot John Waters...
23 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The DVD extras have everyone comparing "God Bless America" to Oliver Stones: "Natural Born Killers" but y'all have forgotten John Waters made a much better version "Serial Mom" way back in 1994.

Having gotten that off my chest, Bob Goldwhait made an amazing film that I'm sad to learn didn't make it much further out than the film festival circuit the first time around. Thankfully to video streaming, you can.. and MUST watch this movie at least once a day.

The script artfully dips it's toe into political motivations for the charming Duo's killing spree..but gracefully does not dwell in it. *Spoiler* the finest example of this is after they shoot up a "Glen Beck" type pontificate-tor Frank says to his victim that he does agree with some of his politics.. this does not sit well with the girl.. she asks Frank: What issues? ...right after they shoot up the loudmouth asshole.. "Gun control" ...and that's all they needed for the story.

Mank (2020)

Oldman was the ONLY noteworthy thing about this movie
23 June 2021
Gary Oldman's performance of Herman Mankowitz was amazing.

However, the scripts portrayal of "Mank" was 100% wrong. While the movie does show he was an alcoholic, gambler and womanizer - they showed him being a functional alcoholic, womanizing gambler. It was the Hollywood system propping his ego and his flaws up because he could write. That was his only aspect of his life he could "function" on.

Meanwhile, the rest of the script has every single character that is not Herman Mankowitz is written and directed as cardboard cutouts. They had dialogue that served as mostly dramatic foils and/or cheap exposition.. of which served mostly to make "Mank" look like a fully functional and decent human being to be around. There was zero depth, soul or even a spark of a real character in anyone else in the movie.

The ONLY thing the film had going for it is Fincher and the script banking on most people knowing who William Randolph Hearst ("Pops") Irving Thalberg (beloved MGM producer) Marrion Davies (Hearsts mistress) and Louis B Mayer (the 3rd M of MGM) Hearsts portrayal was stiff ..but somewhat accurate as to who he really was. Marion Davies however, was a staunch conservative.. in the movie she was almost siding with this socialism movement that tried be subtlety in the background.. Thalberg's portrayal was the worst however, he served as a mostly the main foil for "Mank" when Mankowitz himself was ruining his own life.

Slow paced and exposition heavy but. fun
23 June 2021
The Fly head effects/makeup were pretty gross/creepy .. I was expecting a paper mâché head...but when we get to see the creepy head.. it really is terrifying. It is rather highbrow drama Hollywood style story...for a creepy body horror story.. It does have Vincent Price.

This is where the pirate cliches started..
23 June 2021
Fairbanks Sr made all the jumping, climbing and swinging look effortless..and fun. I am guessing that given the year it was made, this is where most the Pirate movie cliches started. I have to say, even if there were cliches before 1926, Douglas Fairbanks made them look fresh.

Highly underrated film

I wish I could have seen this in the theater back in 2000. Sadly, I lived 200 miles away from a theater at the time. Regardless, this is a raw, honest open movie about the black community that should be seen by everyone.

Dark Angel (1990)

Eh
20 May 2021
The dialogue is 100% predictable. The story about the aliens does not fully come into play until well past half way through. Even then, the earth bound story steamrolled it's way into the main story line.

Plus, the concept of good and bad aliens taking their inter galactic chase on earth is not new.. "The Hidden" did it much better just 3 years prior. Plus, Aliens looking for drugs, finding something better that only is secreted from the human Pineal gland was also done far better in 1983 with "liquid Sky" They took the elements of those films (and a few more) They took all the cliches from the elements of brainless buddy cop films.. and voila!; Instant cheesy movie.

The script did manage to reduce the introduction of aliens and earth bound cops together with one or two short, clearly expository, lines. However, the action scenes are well filmed and edited. The characters... less than cardboard cutouts...but it is still fun to watch once or twice.

Great bad movie!
2 May 2021
I rank this right next to Joe Dante's "Piranha" While "Piranha" is a blatant parody/spoof of "Jaws" "Orca" takes itself way to seriously.. with A list actors like Richard Harris and Charlotte Rampling giving A list performances ...with a D list script. It's hilarious to watch all the way through. Harris had to know this premise and script was terrible.. yet he was a consumate professional and delivered exactly what the script and director called for.

Charming but...
3 April 2021
I can't believe I'm saying this, but this movie could have been much better if it were at least 30 minutes longer. There were so many moments where the dramatic and comedic tension could have shined. However, being only 65 minutes long, they crammed quite a lot of story while shoving aside some potentially great moments.

Good casting, but also not memorable.

Because they could film it in a drive in...
24 March 2021
I'm "facebook friends" with Mr. Goff,. Minutes after watching this fun "horror" film, I posted a question on his facebook page: "why did you make this movie?"

Within minutes his reply was:that a friend of his owned the drive-in at the time. He sold it and it was going to be torn down. So tthey had free reign and wanted to make a movie. I love it more just for that fact.
