This review is not your typical pretentious/critical review and it is written straight after watching Top Gun Maverick...
3 September 2022
First things first. I don't know if we have anyone as awesome as Tom Cruise in Hollywood. He is badass. He delivered. He's a superstar. Did somebody say he's 60!?!

Top Gun Maverick is supersonic. You can't get bored watching it, you'll have your mouth gaping open one minute and will be crying real tears the next. This movie is everything I remember movies were in my childhood/adolescence: the actors were heroes, the action felt real, the effects were not CGI overload, and music was just right. Top Gun Maverick delivers in every aspect, actors are awesome all of them filled in their parts so well, the excitement is there, magnificent stunning flight sequences, flawless directing, fun, camaraderie, jokes, breathtaking visuals. I absolutely loved this movie, it's up there with the best of the best in action genre. I'm not sure they can ever top it with another Top Gun but I think they shouldn't even try. Just leave it as intended an homage to the directing of the past, where action and fun were more important than compromising with political correctness police. This movie is raw, as in didn't feel like they tried to social engineer the audience, you get what you see. It's entertainment at its best. I won't get into details, reveal what the movie is about all I will say is - just watch it. 10/10 absolutely.

Brits were not the first ones to break Enigma
26 January 2015
I have just one comment. Why is a movie founded on a lie such a huge success and even nominated for an Oscar? Alan Turing was not the first guy to crack the code. He and others at Bletchley Park were merely the smart folks who used Polish groundbreaking cryptography methods to tackle Enigma. Turing is portrayed here as a hero and the success as solely his, all according to the sneaky writers of The Imitation Game. Did they forget to carry out a proper research or was their mission to undermine Polish part a deliberate thing? Brits often forget about their 2WW allies, ascribing all the war effort success to themselves. But hey, even 'bletchleyparkorg', the official website, says "The Poles broke Enigma in 1932"...In 1939 with the invasion on Poland imminent the Poles reached out to Britons for help and thus Bletchley Park became the centre where cryptographers were unscrambling the code. See "The Imitation Game' - Success Has Many Fathers..." a review by Witold Sobkôw

Get your facts straight people.

Silk (2011–2014)
10/10
Outstanding production, real issues
26 November 2014
This show does not disappoint. It is so well done that you might forget you're watching a TV drama not real life events. The characters are believable, powerfully drawn, but the undeniable star of the show is Maxine Peake - her performance just superb! As Martha Costello she is everything that you'd imagine a superior barrister to be. Can't get enough of her credible acting to be honest. The rest of the cast deserves a praise too because it is thanks to them that this BBC drama is so uniquely authentic. Filmed in London (I think), it depicts daily life at Shoe Lane chambers and the work of British barristers, clerks and solicitors. I am professionally interested in law and find it hard to point out any flaws in how "Silk" presents the legal crowd in London. I do see a difference between an American show of this kind and a British one. The former tends to be focused on achievements, career and quirks of personality and the latter...hmmm...basically on the job, meaning you get a believable picture of the life at the chambers. If you're into this sort of thing just see for yourself, you won't be disappointed.

State of Affairs (2014–2015)

We just have to wait and see...
19 November 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I have to admit, I anticipated this show. I like Katherine Heigl as an actress (don't care much about her personal life, it's not my business). She is smart, funny and the comedies she starred in were fun to watch - not demanding, just fun enjoyable pastime. Maybe that is why I don't get all the hate this series, or even more so the actress herself, got so far. 'Reviewers' here do not care about the first episode and its potential focusing instead on some highly individualised preferences. Really? Some comments go like: "black woman president ain't gonna happen" (republican rednecks?), other "Heigl is not suitable, CIA agent would be more serious and not so: young, emotional, double-chinned...(and what on earth has blond hair colour to do with anything!?), over-acting (?!), teary analysts (because humans shouldn't care for their fellows) and so on"... Are you sure you're reviewing this show? Have you ever seen the inside of government's offices? Are you positive only serious, clever and capable people are ruling our countries? Your expectations make me laugh. All those who have serious jobs are just human, they have better and worse days, they are more emotional or less, that does not mean they are wrong for the task. State of Affairs looks more real to me than TGW and other similarly oriented TV shows. ''''''''''And now about the series itself''''''''A young agent was attacked in Kabul. She experiences a PTSD. She lost her fiancée who also happened to be the president's son. Charlie is very intelligent, dynamic and in command despite having to deal with her personal drama. I do not know much about the everyday work at CIA or the president's office but even if what's being portrayed here isn't 100% accurate, one has to remember that State of Affairs is a TV show not a documentary. What matters to me, as a viewer, is that I'm hooked from the first episode, that the show is interesting and that there is a potential for future seasons. And by the way, Charlie is way more likable and appealing than wooden Lizzie from The Blacklist (a great show thanks to James Spader!).

The best of its kind
7 November 2014
How come this show has only 7 stars?! Are you people blind or just nasty? This is by far the best, funny and interesting tattoo show out there. The quality of art is astounding. I can't believe a tattoo can be this alive, this good. I love that all in the shop, except for the receptionist, are nerdy/geeky. I can relate. The cast like same stuff as me and they know what they're talking about. Dialogues are enjoyable and funny, there's very little drama (please, please, please keep it this way) and the tattoos they get to do are very well conceptualised first. I like Area's 51 crew, they know their business and it never happened that a customer was left with an ugly/stupid ink etched onto their skin (which is quite common in shows like Master Ink or occasionally in Best Ink). Super duper show that provides entertainment and good time. Can't wait to see the next series. Producers, please hurry up!

Annabelle (I) (2014)

Seen it all.
7 November 2014
Warning: Spoilers
There's a young couple, a new house, a spooky doll (who on earth would want to collect that anyway?!), mysterious black lady from a dusty bookstore and the priest. We've seen all that before. However it is nicely done so one can't complain too much about the picture. This movie will scare you if you watch it in a cinema. The sound, huge screen and lots of girly shrieks create tension and dark mood. All that aside and the movie lacks. I didn't quite catch the connection of the satanists to Annabell, why the scene of a crazy attack at the pregnant woman? Why the bookstore lady condemns her soul surely knowing that will keep her away from her deceased daughter? Why wouldn't the woman and her baby move out of the spooky apartment, maybe into a church or somewhere safer? This and many other plot mishaps make this movie less enjoyable. It has some good ideas, dialogues and believable acting but all in all it could have been better. As said before, if you go and see it in a cinema on a night out with a bunch of friends you won't be disappointed but when you start analysing this film....no just don't analyse it. (curious if they're making a sequel though)

Ink Master (2012– )

Ink Master drama
7 November 2014
The only reason I'm giving it a star is because of season 1, which was pretty decent. From then on the producers focused more on making a soap opera drama comparable to The Housewives of Miami than a tattoo competition. I can't stand the bit**ing and nasty contestants who came on this show to expose their awful characters rather than really tattoo. The worst season yet is the Fifth one. A bunch of mediocre 'tattoo artists' doing really poor tattoos and getting away with it. Perhaps better ones didn't want to participate in this weak show? I can see only a couple of OK artists: Erik and Josh, the rest is embarrassing themselves....And the judges...Where should I begin? First, they have little to say about the quality of tattoos and the critique panel in the end is a joke. I, as a laywoman, can say things like "This tattoo has some good tones", or "This one lacks depth"...The judges are boring and unfit for the job. Not to mention that Nuniez and Peckh are being accused of harassment by a female crew member. Nasty, nasty, nasty...yawn...There are better shows than this one. Master Ink can't even be compared to Epic Ink and Best Ink which truly are about ART and amazingly talented people. Master Ink is just a bad taste TV drama.

You won't turn away from the screen, not even for a moment.
25 January 2012
This is how thrilling movies should be made. An author is hired to finish writing a memoir of a politician, a former UK prime minister to be exact. He arrives at a remote estate and gets entangled in a daily routine of the household members. The more he learns about them the more puzzled he becomes. Eventually his curiosity takes over him and he starts going after the trail. I hope it's not an over-interpretation on my part but here it goes. In this movie, I think, Polanski's message or a subtle hint was that there are so many 'big' things going on around us about which we have no clue, yet we tend to focus on small and irrelevant pieces of the puzzle. We look at the small and we don't see the big. Take it or leave it, Polanski never made 'just' entertainment. I adore his style, which is very distinct and I recommend this film, only wish it was longer...

A few points to all the haters:

1. Complaining about Kim Catrall is unsubstantiated. Did you people think for a second that maybe her cheesy acting was the desired effect? She was a sexy, smartish assistant, who obviously was American but tried hard to master her British accent, I don't know, maybe to fit in, give herself an air of sophistication or to please the employer. On the top of that she might be romantically involved with the politician. Think about her character and then judge.

2. Complaints about the 'mistakes' and 'shortcomings' in the plot. You seem to be forgetting that films are usually 1.5h long, this one was 2h and some shortcuts had to be made, like the famously cited 'google search'. The magic of cinema is time-bound.

3. McGregor's character...hmmm this is an easy one. You may think he was too simple as a writer, his lines were unconvincing etc. but why on earth would you think that Polanski was not in control of his actors? Some comments just show pure disrespect towards someone who's been making movies since 1955. Come on!

Hang in there
30 December 2011
I watch horror movies...a lot. I was drawn to this one because of Melissa George whom I think is a good actress and she's not afraid to push herself to deliver an – what some might call – over the top performance. It works well in movies, especially when balanced out with some 'quiet' characters. The plot looks somewhat like this: a group of friends, a cabin in mountains, bad guys and a frantic chase. Don't want to reveal more because this is not why you, fellow thriller/horror fans, should see it. I recommend it wholeheartedly because it is a well written and well executed screenplay spiced up with a nail biting, heart stopping moments. What is more discomforting than a climber on a rope fighting for life? We had a bunch of movies like this, and some based on true stories (Touching the Void, North Face) but in this particular one the idea was to deliver a thrill and to keep your eyes glued to the screen. It is not an Oscar nominee so don't raise your expectations too high. What you will get though is nearly 100 mins of entertainment, beautiful Scottish highlands, interesting plot and another solid performance form Melissa George.Enjoy.

Scream 4 (2011)
I like to Scream
3 August 2011
Bravo Mr Craven! You finally got even, if I'm correct, for all the wasted potential in Fred Krueger's sub-sequential stories that were not consulted with you. And you did it with just one line: 'never f..k with the original!'. Bravo! It was subtle and tasteful (ekhm less the swear word). As to the rest...I did not expect much and did not get disappointed. Justified exploitation of the sequels is something we're used to, some do it better some worse. It was a bit slow in the beginning but the conscious remarks throughout the film, i.e. about today's celebrities etc, made it more than just a picture. Aside from that the usual running up the stairs, betrayal, blood and screams (Ms Campbell, could you put more heart into it next time?). Overall very Wes Craven.

In Poland? I don't think so...
7 June 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I'll get straight to the point. What is good about this film: an interesting plot - builds up suspension through the story rather than image, and......that is it. It could have made more sense if the director and his crew actually treated us to the real Polish countryside which I suspect they did not. Moreover 'Polish' folks are not Polish, some of them did not learn to speak their parts too well either. I mean seriously, how much more money would they have to spend to make it more authentic? In my opinion it took away the quality this film could otherwise have. Also that bit where the 'main priest' talks a lot while sacrificing the scapegoat (possessed). He makes a contribution to the Christian God according to the prayer he utters (literally Lord's Prayer). Perhaps something more original would add more suspension? On the other hand screen-writer's choice might have been deliberate, for example, to demonise Christian faith a little etc. Overall watchable but some wasted potential.

Do avoid paying for it.
30 May 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Hmmm, where to begin? I'm guilty of laughing out loud while watching the first hangover, I have to admit. Therefore I have the capacity to enjoy silly comedies...but this...this was painful to watch. The humour was really low quality, as if the writers did not give a flying truck about a viewer. It was in fact so bad that I felt embarrassed for them. In general they used the oldest (and least funny) stereotypes, the stupidest jokes, and the cheapest tricks. Let's take the scene with a monkey smoking a fag. How was exploitation of this animal funny? Yes, 'no animals were harmed during the making of this movie' (probably) so what? What is the message they are sending across? Entertainment it is not. Is Thailand really just lady-boys, drugs, fakes and huge disparity between very rich and very poor? Maybe...But rather than exploiting this painful reality they should stigmatise it in my opinion (Monty Python style!). Instead, a disappointment. Don't get me wrong, I sometimes enjoy silly stuff-who doesn't-but this film was disrespectful: 'just take the horse poo we serve and shut up'. There is nothing else to write about this movie except: don't pay for it it is sooo not worth your money. I would certainly give it a zero on a voting scale.

It should be prescribed
16 February 2011
Finally, a decent teenage oriented film for all. I have to admit I'm biased so if you're reading this better take that into account. I'm infatuated with Mr Galifianakis' charm. I can't be nonsubjective. I loved the film because the guy was lovable. Obviously the film had other qualities like a good dialogues, believable and engaging characters, bearable soundtrack (mind you there's hardly any of the recent stuff I would consider good music in a motion picture), feel-good entertainment for people under pressure, and of course another amazing performance from the rising star- Mr Galifianakis! I recommend the film for one good reason: it is like a therapy session/self-help book without the horsesh!t. Watch it, you won't regret it*. [*unless you are one of those money greedy, soulless zombies better known as 'neo-yuppie', in this case do us all a favour and get off this train please]

LA stink
4 November 2010
Warning: Spoilers
OK, to tell you the truth I was hooked for two seasons and found the show uplifting and refreshing. Beautiful art, interesting artists and generally very little drama, which in my humble opinion sucks... SO I anticipated third season but it turned out to be a whammy. And I'm talking not only content but, surprisingly the editing too. In the era of digital, enhanced images and perfectionism in media one would expects no less than that in a popular show, well it's not the case with LA ink. First of all the cutting and gluing the shots together is a disaster. You can really hear where the frames were glued, because it sounds faster (i'm no editor so pardon my layman vocabulary). Then there are some bits (previews) in the beginning of the show, which are out of context just stuck together for drama effect. How annoying. Let me just say that in season 3 there is a gross negligence on the part of producers. Also hiring the incompetent Blondi and keeping her for so long...what was that about? Adrian she is a horrible, grumpy female and I'm not surprised no one could manage to stick around for too long. It also might be due to the fact that the crew is so tight but in such case the shouldn't even try to extend the family. The art in season 3 lost the original quality too. I only gave it 5/10 because of the previous seasons. Sorry to see this show going down like that.

I'm addicted
5 May 2010
what can i say about this show that hasn't been already said? it is perfect. entertainment, fun, psychology, beautiful surroundings...there is one thing however that often puzzles me. i recently read an interview with jeff probst (the host of the show) and he said that contestants are not allowed any cosmetics etc. on the show. well, how come girls always have they eyebrows perfectly shaped, no sign of hair on their legs or intimate areas and head locks look washed and clean? it's been puzzling me for a while.castaways don't look the part. also why so many beautiful people? i understand the show must sell and probably whoever is responsible for casting must comply with that rule but at the same time the show seems less real because of that.i would really like to see normal people with cellulite and other flaws some time.other than that i wholeheartedly recommend it. hope the show will go on for as long as i'll be able to watch it.

Triage (2009)

excellent
6 April 2010
Warning: Spoilers
What a performance from Mr Farrell. I didn't expect anything special when got the movie but it surprised me. Was very well thought, told a good story and the performance of the cast was outstanding. The story is about two friends who go to war-torn Kurdistan and leave behind their wives one of which is very pregnant. I should stop here because revealing more of the plot is revealing the ending and I don't want that. Triage is going to capture your imagination, and make you feel and understand what goes on in war journalist head. I for the first time tried to understand the character's (Mark) motivations and felt that I'm not being lied to. I'm grateful that it's not just another war flick, with loads of kabooom going on, but a deep psychological study of a person who witnessed something that was beyond his mind's capacity. I recommend it because it made me realise that 'in war there are no winners only losers' and this applies to passive witness as well.

Stalker (1979)

Why should you see it
14 February 2010
First, because films like that are hardly made anymore. Second because the director managed to set a philosophical debate that doesn't get you bored (and the film is 3h long). I think the 'journey motif' it's what moves the action forward, and keeps you watching. Also the mood and the jumpy characters contribute to overwhelming sensation of unknown to be discovered. This film leaves space for interpretation and character analysis. It does not serve 'fast processed food' but let's you indulge in the cinematographic feast. Third because 'Stalker' was made in social realism period in USSR and somehow it gives me an impression of much freedom. I think the director managed to compromise without loosing his integrity. Metaphisical journey of a stalker,a scientist and an artist but I'm sure each viewer may see a different depth to it...not to be missed.

Surprise
13 February 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Well I am positively surprised how good this movie actually was. Not sure why sometimes it's branded 'horror'because it's more like dramatic thriller. I liked the story and I liked the characters who were rich and believable. For the first time 'a chick' didn't annoy me:)and there was more to her than meets the eye. The story begins when a couple of newlyweds decides to take a trip to the Grand Canyon. Their guide is a rough, heavy drinking guy, who promises them an unforgettable experience. The trip however does not go as planned. I think this film is a solid piece. Don't expect more than 140min of adventure/survival flick and you won't be disappointed. It kept me focused and interested. Well worth seeing.

a lot of screaming going on
13 February 2010
Stupid, plot-less, bloody. If it's supposed to be a comedy horror it kind of is but not good enough. The world could do without it. The only thing I quite liked was the soundtrack. The cartoon in the beginning and the end was a nice touch too. Maybe they should release the whole film as such. I'm not really able to say why I didn't like this flick, because there's no story. I probably am just bored with all these low budget movies about epidemics and teenagers making out. Not really sure what audience this film was directed at, who the director saw as a potential viewer? Too silly for grown-ups, too ugly for children and underestimating the intelligence of an average teen. Well, this is a very personal review, because this film you either like or don't. A waste of time.

solid good cinema
19 December 2009
I have seen Kate in many films, but remember her mostly by her performance in Underworld. That did not impress me nor made me think highly of her acting, so much as just another pretty face. However what she did show in Nothing But The Truth is her best performance so far. She was Brilliant and Convincing as an intelligent reporter who's facing jail because of her work and principles she holds on to. The rest of the cast was amazing too. Overall this film is sooo worth seeing. I sat throughout the screening without moving much, absorbing the story with whole of my body. Plot is intriguing and serves a probable situation without being, the usual hollywoodish: 'too much, too improbable'. I am not a critic and can only share this: the emotions the film evoked in me were very strong. Also I felt an urge to recommend it further. The film is intelligent without being pompous and 'trying too hard'. If you miss good action-drama on contemporary issues, do watch Nothing But The Truth.

Why you'll like it?
8 September 2009
Warning: Spoilers
War is not an entertaining subject yet I was able to sit through a 140 minutes of a drama about it, a real achievement. Three, daring journalists on a dangerousquest. But do not focus on that thread only because there is more to this movie, a lot more. It is sharp, sometimes mocking and the cast-Brilliant!. The choice of medium was excellent. Should the film show the story in a sober, critical way I wouldn't finish watching it probably. I know enough on the war-subject and it makes me mad not being able to do anything to prevent populations from engagin in tis type of'problem-solving'. What seeing 'The Hunting Party' gave me, was an assurance that there are people that understand what is going on. That in these crazy times we manage to save ourselves from insanity also by laughing our helplessness off. The movie to me is, among other things, about that. I'm familiar with the issues of war criminals not getting what they deserve, enslaving bureaucracy in UN and USA, UK, EU's involvement in deeds they wouldn't want us-people to know about. I realise that having power and being fair is difficult, therefore I'm not judging. I'm only saying that I 'see' what is going on. The knowledge is power in a good way. If each one of us takes responsibility, the world will be a better place.

Why it's a waste of time?
7 September 2009
Warning: Spoilers
If you are into senseless flicks, watch this one. If you like when the film makes you want to vomit the lunch you just had, you know what to do. Here blood runs like water, scissors are the preferred murder weapon and 'gandarmerie' guys are the dumbest yet (ever heard of using a gun on wicked murdering *itches?)! The pregnant girl has neither a clue (why after breaking a mirror she doesn't wrap the glass with a cloth?or take care of her wounds while being locked in her bathroom?). Something tells me that the film was made by really inexperienced team of sick psychos whose main concern was to paint it all red. I hated 'A'Linterieur', not only because the characters were like puppets (dreadfully moronic), the picture made me sick to my stomach (the generous scene of c-section) but also because it had no story really. I don't think that screaming and running around a house in darkness, on Christmas Eve, and fooling around with scissors, knitting needless etc. was good enough a plot. A waste of time

Believable acting and story
11 August 2009
Warning: Spoilers
however the director obviously tried to clear countess's name. Elizabeth Bathory is portrayed as a victim to frantic witch huntings of those times and a evil doings of palatin Thurzo. This is the reason why film falls into "historical-fiction" category. If anyone is interested in objective account of life of "countess Dracula", may not ever find out the truth. Little is left of facts and the rest are testimonies, obtained by tortures, those aren't much reliable. I read a lot of reviews on IMDb of this film, rarely flattering. In my opinion it deserves better. "Bathory" (2008) is beautifully made into a sad, dreamlike tale. I was positively surprised how much attention was paid to costumes/scenography/objects accuracy. Thanks to that I felt more and could imagine better the spirit of 16th century. Much attention was paid to details, again costumes, carts and amazing locations. Film well worth seeing. The only fall back for me was the strange mix of English speech with heavy Hungarian accents. I just detest this kind of "universalization". Why not make a film in Hungarian with English subtitles? Much better.

Feel good horror movie?!
7 August 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I've just seen it. It's one of those horror movies that make you laugh as well. I saw something similar before, and British too (I think it was "Shaun of the dead") Anyways, really good overall. A group of workmates on a trip somewhere in Hungary. They reach the 'hotel' and from then on everything goes wrong. This movie has it all: good cast and acting, humor, spilled blood and dead corpses, topped with a couple of maniacs on the loose. It's entertaining till the very end. A little bit more about the funny side of it. It is soooo British. A scene where one of the guys stands on the mine and the other two run by and he is 'as cool as a cucumber', soooo funny. I highly recommend if you like this kind of stuff, a Shepperd's pie of horrors.
