It (I) (2017)

I just can't understand what is so special about this "horror" movie
5 September 2023
First things first - I haven't read the novel by Stephen King and I didn't like the 1990 TV-Mini series either, so my expectations for IT (2017) were absolutely minimal. I am just a big horror fan and this is my honest viewing.

It (2017) is like a small dog - they only bark, but they can't do anything. The movie wants to be scary sooo badly, it tries too hard - loud noises, sudden jumpscares, a shocking opening, scary (and very loud again) music. But all of this falls flat, because there is no atmosphere and no sense of horror or fear in absolutely anything this movie has to offer. For me this is horror for kids done right.

But wait - this movie is rated R, so that was not the point. Soo what is it ?

Maybe it works as a drama - let's check it out - noope - the kid characters are nothing like the kids from the 80s, the acting is so so, the script is stupid, the drama is non-existent.

Maybe it works as a comedy movie - let's check it out - noooope - they tried very hard to do something like that, but again - jokes about periods and moms are not funny anymore, guys.

The movie is a huge cliche, I have watched a lot of horror movies and some of them are not that scary, but at least they are engaging, entertaning, but IT (2017) was not.. The jumpscares are the worst I have ever seen and it looks like the director has no idea how to do horror, and I am sure that if James Wan or Ari Aster did this - the movie will be amazing as horror, but then again - it probably will have the mediocre score for horror - max rating of 6. I can't understand why, why this has a score of 7.3, I have no idea. And if this is an axample of how to do horror movies in the future, then horror is back in being the mediocre thing that it was 15 years ago. Maybe The Conjuring, Hereditary, Sinister, (REC) or The Descent are just stupid replicas of how horror should be made and this is the best there is. And don't even get me started on the "best King adaptation ever" - Shawshank Redemption, Green Mile and The Mist can go in the trash, right? Right ?..

The brutal ending kinda saved the movie for me
6 August 2023
We all love First Blood. We have to agree it is the only film in the franchise that felt real and will always be the best. Then came Rambo (2008). I am big fan of action movies, when they don't shy away from brutal kills. Needless to say Rambo from 2008 got everything I ever wanted from a Rambo movie, because at this point the franchise was all about action.

When I started watching Rambo: Last Blood I thought to myself "they can't show anything new, at least let it be more brutal, than the 2008 movie. For the majority of the movie, it was very stupid. The dialog, the screenplay, the acting was HORRIBLE for me. The CGI was one of the worst I have ever seen in a box-office hit movie. The scene with the fire at the end was an abomination. The movie was slow and relied too much on human drama, but not builded in any way like a drama film should be. Although the fate of the girl was unexpetedly dramatic and tragic, I couldn't get sucked in the film's drama. Until the last 20 minutes it was the worst Rambo movie ever.

But the last 20 min were sooo brutal, so original in its brutality and kills. Rambo was not the gunslinging killing machine that he was. He used traps Home Alone style, but R rated version. And although Kevin Mccalister was brutal in its own level, John Rambo absolutely annihilates the whole mexican cartel. From triple head slicing, to blowing up half of a humans body, to impalement on spikes, all the way to pipe through the head, the kills are very original and entertaining.

But all in all, I wouldn't watch it again and it is still the worst Rambo movie, maybe slightly worse than Rambo 3. Only for fans of brutal action and for fans of the franchise.

An absolute blast ! This is what a monster movie should be, take notes, filmmakers :)
22 May 2023
Woooow, am I super surprised of what I had just seen... Kong: Skull Island is everything I wanted it to be, and even more! I love a good popcorn flick, I love a good monster movie, and I certainly love good adventure movies, but it can be said that they are very, very rare. Kong: Skull Island did just that. Yes, the characters are one, maybe two-dimensional, yes the story is full of cliches, the characters are stereotypical, but, me, personally, I was captured by the movie.

The visual effects are absolutely spectacular, I can't recall better CGI, compared to this epic movie, except the new Planet Of The Apes trilogy, maybe. The cinematography was sooo beautiful, the sceneries were astonishing, there were moments were I just stood with my mouth open, trying to digest the gorgeous creation, that the crew of this film showed us. The first and the last battle scenes were amazing, I have never seen such a beautiful destruction in a movie. The director of photography showed us miraculous and stunning imagery, very, very colourful. I just loved the scene where Conrad was slashing blue-blooded pterodactyls with a samurai sword, while green poison gases were exploding in the background.

I loved that the movie was not shy to show us some violence, besides the PG-13 rating, it was pretty brutal at times. Not many box-office hits do this. The 2 hours passed by magically, I was so engrossed by the magic of this place. The monster battles and the other creatures designs were darn creative.

I am a big fan of dramas, big fan of movies full with life lessons and meaning, but c'mon, guys, this was special. We have to give the credits, when something is so professionally made. The example I can think of (because, mostly I am a horror movie fan) is the first Conjuring. That movie was a huuge cliche, but it was soo well made, that it became one of the best modern horror movies. Same az this gem.

I dunno, maybe it's just because i love jungles, and I love war movies, but judging by most of the top reviews, I am not alone.

Recommended with two hands for everybody!

They just decided that they will throw everything at us ..
22 March 2023
I am a big fan of The Conjuring 1 and 2. Anabelle was meh, Annabelle Creation was very very good. The Nun and the other abomination in the Conjuring universe - i will not even bother to say anything.

The film wanted to give us sooo many scares, that it just became ridiculous. They threw everything that they can think of - we have soo many demons and monsters, we have A FREAKING WEREWOLF IN AN ANNABELLE MOVIE ... Thats not everything - some boy smashed it with a guitar and vaporised it. This is a perfect example that you may have some good ideas and creepy designs, but the execution and the atmosphere is everything in horror. I was not scared, not for a moment. The film wasn't scary, there was not even a little bit ot tension in it. The demons weren't scary, even the titular doll wasn't. There is an abundance of stupid jimpscares, that don't even work. The main characters were annoying, with the exception of the blond girl, she was sweet. The ending was stupid and not worthy of this franchise at all.

Some positive things: the music, when they are playing the Feeley Meeley game is very very creepy, and the dead bodies with the coins were cool, but they could have been better.

Not the worst in the franchise, but i hope it will, be the last Annabelle film..

Am I crazy ??
19 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Ok, I usually dont comment on overrated movies, that are universally liked, because I will get down voted a lot, but this is something special. I love war movies, I love foreign cinema, and I love a good sad and brutal movie.

What we have here is what a lot of you guys call a "piece of art", "greatest war movie EVER", and my favourite - "greatest MOVIE EVER". I wanted to like the movie, I really did, but please tell me where is the art, where is the "greatest" in the following scenes:
  • the scene where Flyora and Glasha meet - what was that, their conversation was retarded, their expressions were stupid, and I couldn't understand if they were crying or laughing
  • almost 50 minutes of the film is just close up of faces and dialogs and monologues that dont make absolutely no sense, where is the ultra smart and artsy thing here
  • why was Glasha even there, they just met, laughed like absolute crazy savages, 20 mins drowning in mud, then the boy just pushes her in the mud, she gets mad at him and then she just dissapears.

  • the 20 mins of the boy shooting the Hitler picture and reversing history - yeah I get it, its like it never happened, but it was sooo bad, so cringe-worthy, and just repeating, and repeating, GUYS WE GET IT!

  • the unbearable music. I get it again - it is supposed to be this way, this is art in its ultimate form, but at the end of the film my head was hurting, and not because of emotions. The sounds were unbearable. The music was not in the tone of the movie at all, but maybe that was the purpose again and we will close our eyes and not be critical
  • the children speaking with a demon voice (I don't even know how to comment that)
  • the barn burning and the german soldiers saying that only grown man can go out, but no children allowed. No problem for our child protagonist. He is not a child not only mentally, but even physically and the germans just say "ok, he can go out, no problem at all"

I liked the swamp scene, that is the only scene where I felt tension. The direction was kinda good and I can appreciate the hard work and the harsh filming conditions for the actors involved.

In summary even after the ridiculousness of the above mentioned scenes I give this film a 7/10, because maybe I am crazy. 80 percent of the reviews are positive and say this movie is the best ever. Saving private Ryan sucks ! Maybe this if some amazing cinema, some amazing art and my small brain cant comprehend nothing. Maybe films like this deserve to be in top 250 and be example of art, and films like Shawshank Redemption, Alien, The Green Mile, The Dark Knight, Star Wars were stupid and show nothing of cinema. Thank you for opening my eyes !

Let the hate begin!

Very, very underwhelming ...
22 July 2022
I give this film a 7/10 not because it deserves it, but so the reviewers with the 10 stars can shut up about how "the people, who don't like this movie are paid and fake".

I am a big fan of the franchise and the reason why i watched all of the movies (some of them absolutely stupid), and even the TV series is because I wanted to be ready and enjoy at full scale the (what I heard was) the best trilogy of all time and an amazing reboot of the franchise. So you can understand my dissapointment when I finally reached the end of this long franchise with War for the planet of the apes and it was sooo boring, so tame, so underwhelming.

I loved RISE and DAWN, especially DAWN, they were amazing movies. WAR is not. This was one of the slowest movies I have ever seen, there was no WAR in it. DAWN had waaaay more war, more emotion, more thrill, than this thing. We spend maybe 50 minutes just watching Ceasar being behind bars. And then they let him walk and eat and beat him, then he is again behing the bars, but the other monkeys are watching him now, and then they let him out so he can just stay and look, and beat him more, and then he is behing the bars, but this time he is looking more agressive, aaaand he is out again and they do not give him food, aaaand he is in the jail again, BUT THIS TIMEE he looks sad. You get the picture. The other 50 minutes were just like straight adventure Indiana Jones movie. 4 apes going on a expedition in the wilderness, riding horses. AND NOTHING HAPPENS AGAIN! Where was the war, where were the emotions, where was the thrill, where were the action and the dynamic. Not to mention that all of the newly introduced characters were absolutely boring and one-dimensional.

I reeeally wanted to like this film, I really did. But for me that is a shame of a final movie for such a great trilogy, for such a great franchise. I'm sooo disappointed. And no, the 1 star rating are not fake, the movie is fake, you guys. It's a shame, but I still give it a 7, because I loved the character of Ceasar, and anything with him should be 7 stars, or above.

Hereditary (2018)
10/10
The most unsettling movie I have seen, and one of the best horror movies EVER ...
17 July 2022
Man, after so many years and all of the hype, I finally goy on the Hereditary train. It seems there are 2 groups of people, who have watched it - the ones that absolutely love it and the ones that hate the guts of it. I'm in the first category, obviously. I dunno if i can go and say - this is the best horror movie ever. There are a lot of equally amazing horror films, all different, and I have not seen all of the great stuff, I am sure and I am a huuuge fan of the genre. But if they put a pistol on my head and i got to say what is THE BEST horror movie that I have watched, i guess i will say Hereditary.

This movie was everything I wanted to see from a horror movie, after loving the genre for almost two decades. There are no jump scares (at least not the traditional ones). Hereditary was disturbing, filled with an atmosphere of dread, uneasyness, tension, feeling that something is very, very wrong. There was not a moment in the film that I relaxed and felt comfortable. The sounds used are chilling, the music was terrifying, I loved it very much. The cinematography was great, but the stars of the film were the director - Ari Aster and the actress Toni Colette. The first one just blew all of the competition in his style of filmmaking, his great ideas and twists (just watch the trailer and see how misleading it is). His style is original and the guy surely knows what he is doing, because till this moment (almost a month, after watching Hereditary) I am still creeped and unsettled by it. As far as Toni Colette goes - man, she just gave it all in this one. Her acting is maybe the best acting I have seen in a horror movie, and one of the best female acting EVER. She was absolutely amazing in this.

With its disturbing images, pumping soundtrack, terrifying sounds, effective scares, amazing writing and directing, devastating, dark and sad atmosphere, terrific acting (not only from Colette, but from everybody involved), Hereditary stands as one of the best of the genre, and maybe even THE best. There were scenes that I will never, EVER forget in my life, that I still think of till this day.

If I have to say something negative - the ending was a little bit too "out of nowhere", and just pulls you out of the realism of it. But compared to everything else, I can forgive that. Everything else was just BRILLIANT.

I will recommend this masterpiece to absolutely everybody, who is a fan of the slow horror (the true horror, imo). Dont miss this gem.

This is what I wanted from a Planet of the Apes reboot/sequel. The best entry since the original !
27 June 2022
I guess I am a fan of the Planet of the Apes franchise, because I have wathced all parts from the 1968 original till now, plus the TV series. I loved the original, and I am not such a big fan of movies made earlier than 1970.

I can surely say this entry is the closest it can get to the greatness of the original in almost everything.

The effects are astounding, maybe the best CGI I have ever seen in my life. The apes had soo much life in them, their eyes and gestures said more than a thousand words. Almost more than half of the movie is without speaking, only sign language, but that didn't hurt the movie at all, it only made it more realistic, much more than the non stop talking apes in the earlier movies.

The absolute best thing about this movie, and maybe even all of the franchise was the story of Ceasar and Koba. What and amazing characters nad what and amazing motion-capture actors. I already knew about Andy Serkis and his greatness, but Toby Kebell as Koba almost stole the show here. We can see such raw emotions and pain in the apes' faces, it is just incredible. The betrayal of Koba and his mission to kill the human race, although spoiled in the trailer were amazing to watch. I never would have guessed that Koba will play such an integral part of the storyline and he looks like a complete badass! The scenes, where he dual-wielded the machine guns, riding on a horse, and later the one-shot of him riding and shooting a freaking tank were something else! And I loved it!

I need to say, though, that the human characters were again, like Rise of the planet of the apes, very one-dimensional, boring and lacking life in them. Very underdeveloped and just plain unnecessary (the apes characters, though were all very well developed and thrilling) Apart from that - the story was soo much better and emotionally engaging, than Rise of the planet of the apes. Even the characters were somewhat better. The tone was much more darker and chilling, the music too. The atmosphere and cinematography were much, much better, that "Rise". And while "Rise" for me was kinda childish, like Disney movie and much more tame and light, "Dawn was the exact opposite - just what I wanted and needed to see in this franchise. Bravo to all of the guys who decided to go in that direction, bravo Matt Reeves.

Absolutely recommended, not only for fans of the franchise, but to all of you :)

Event Horizon (1997)
4/10
I must have watched a different movie from 90 percent of the reviewers
5 June 2022
Event Horizon was on my watchlist for a very long time. The reason i didn't have the time for it was because I wanted to be ready for it. The reviews about the film were soo positive. People were saying that this was "the scariest and most effective horror movie EVER!!" , "the most disturbing film ever", people said they were thinking about the movie looong after it was over, that it changed their life (yes, it is THAT ridiculous). And I continue "creepiest sci-fi horror ever" (screw you ALIEN), "better than ALIEN and THE THING".

I mean, c'mon guys. I know about the subjective part about the movies and that everybody has an opinion, but i'm talking about a 90 percent of the reviews. I'm here to tell you that none of that is true.

The film is super cheesy, there were scares that are straight from 80s slasher horror movies (with the close up of faces, screaming when something scary happens). The film was full of jump scares, the acting, apart from Sam Neill was bad, the music was like from a Disney adventure movie, the characters (again, except from Sam Neill' character) were very boring and lifeless. Nothing was THAT scary, nothing was THAT gory, nothing was THAT thrilling or interesting. Don't even get me started on the final 10 mins of the movied, which were the most ridiculous of all the ridiculousness already happening. I thought I was the stupid one, and I didn't understand the movie, but when I read the analysis of the story - noo, I didn't miss a thing. So what in the world was that thing with the "scariest horror movie ever". I mean, are you joking?? I hate when i trust reviews on this site, they are rarely misleading, but this time is an exception. The film was not that good. It doesn't deserve a 4 rating, but the rating is already unfairly high, soo... The good things were the atmosphere and Sam Neill, and some cinematography shots.

I don't recommend!

The magic is gone...
30 May 2022
Man, I loved the first movie, it was like nothing i have ever seen before, part 2 was even better in my opinion, because the action scenes were just amazing and the gunplay was awesome. And I hate to say it, but Parabellum is just more of the same. Nothing fresh.

Sure it had it's moments of crazy moments. I loved the horse kick battles, the knife-throwing bonanza, the dogs used as spear, the library kill, and to be hones the film was very very brutal in some fights. I love brutality in action movies. But I can say that these things did not make the movie great like the first two parts.

The fistfight scenes were incredibly prolonged, boring at times and at times I just wanted the fight to end, especially at the end of the movie. The villains in Parabellum were boring, dull and it looked like the actors didn't care about their characters. Keanu Reeves' acting was not good too. The plot-twist at the end was soo predictable and just for the sake of moving the plot to future parts, that i didn't care at all about it. John Wick is totally unkillable in this one, and the whole thing where he kills a thousand people and gets stabbed, shot, fall flat from the 100th floor and surviving is just becoming a parody and I think I can't take it anymore.

I was excited for this part, but this is the last time. I don't want 4th part, just stop it! But who cares about what one person wants. The cash cow is ready to give its milk, so maybe they will never stop, as long as there are people who go to theaters hoping to see something different, but I think the hope is lost with Part 3...

It's not a good film, and the reason is not the lack of Michael Myers
22 May 2022
I see a lot of people saying that the low ratings of the movie are because The Shape is not in the movie. Well that was not the reason for me, and maybe for a lot of other reviewers.

The film was not good, it was full of plot holes, it is ridiculous in it's plot, the acting was not good too, the characters( except maybe the evil toymaker) were boring and lifeless, the pacing was slow, lack of tension, lack of scares, somewhat funny (although it is meant to be dark) ending. I watch a lot of 80's horror, so I know they are campy, but this was just ridiculous.

Truth be told the music in the movie was great, just amazing, I loved it, the opening sequence was very trippy too. The cinematography was good. The kills are very cool and gross, the practical effects were convincing and well-made.

Soo, NOO it's not because of Michael, dear fans of the movie. It is because of the movie and I think a rating of 5 is what it deserves. A lot of reviewers are giving it a 10/10 and I am seriously disturbed by that fact.

So 5/10 it is. Not awful, but certainly not good.

The Nun (2018)
2/10
Doesn't even deserve to be in one sentence with The Conjuring films
28 March 2022
Look, i loved The Conjuring, and maybe the scariest character was The demonic nun. It scared the crap out of me. So you can understand why i began watching The Nun with very high expectations. The Conjuring 1 and 2, and Annabelle Creation were soo atmospheric, so thrilling, scary, chilling and very very fun. This movie was the exact opposite.

There was not even one remotely scary scene in this film, it relied ONLY on jumpscares and they were predictable as hell. The titular nun from one of the scariest antagonists from the franchise became a joke. There were comical reliefs (we NEVER needed these in this franchise), absolutely ridiculous one-liners, jumpscare gallore and ZOMBIE NUNS!!! The film became ridiculous for me when the Father just got burried alive in a milisecond, and of course the French-man cutting the head of the zombie nun and go for the one-liner like the most stupid action movie ever. There was zeroo story, zeroo character development and zero scares. We never actually found out why in The demonic nun is the thing that it is, She had 1 milion manifestations and they were bad, just bad, the ending was the "epic" Hollywood ending that the major public wants.

The only good thing I can say about this film is that the CGI was kinda good and the music was chilling (but big part of it was just remade version of The Conjuring 2 soundtrack)

This is the fall of the franchise here. I don't know about the next additons to it, but compared to this Annabelle looked like The Exorcist.

I'm mad, because i had high expectations, I never judge from the imdb score. But it is right, almost every time. It is a shame that a franchise that scared the angels out of me is now THIS thing. I'm a big horror fan and I love all kinds of horror, but this is agony.

Halloween (1978)
10/10
The best slasher horror for sure, and one of the best horror movies in general
31 October 2021
Guys, don't judge me, but tonight I watched the original Halloween FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME ! :D I know I'm late for the party, but better late than never.

What I didn't expect was for this movie to actually creep me out and interest me to the point, where I will now watch all of the franchise with great excitement. Halloween (1978) is a masterpiece, that's for sure., and a milestone in horror movies. From what i read it's now actually the first slasher movie - that being "Black Christmas", but it is the first masked killer slasher movie - copied a thousand times after it came out. It is also the first to apply the "final victim falling when running from the killer, like 10 times" technique, the first to apply the "invincible killer" technique , and the first to actually be centered around Halloween at all. The influence of Halloween is undisputed, when it comes to horror, and that's something we can't take away from it.

But besides that, this film has (along with The Exorcist) - the single most creepiest soundtrack of all horror movies. The theme alone is what will get you on the edge, from the beginning, till the end. It has amazing atmosphere - dark, claustrophobic and very very chilling. It has great scares, that, at least in the time it was made were very original and scary. It created and icon in the horror genre, and made a star out of Jamie Lee Curtis. All of that, and more, combined made this movie the classic and the example of hor scary movies should be made - and made them they did.

Nowadays, maybe Halloween will be boring, slow and not gory enough for most horror enthusiasts. You can say that it got old and it's creepiness is not there anymore. But in my opinions, that's not the case. Halloween from 1978 is and always will be one of the best horror movies ever made and a movies to watch at least once a year. I loved it, but I can understand why the new fans will not. 10/10 absolutely.

Maybe not as good as the first Conjuring, but a very very very good sequel indeed !
21 July 2021
I loved the first Conjuring for what it was..maybe a bit cliche, but absolutely terrifying. And while The Conjuring 2 is not as good as 1, it is still absolutely terrifying.

Let's start off by saying that when i see "based on a true story" the movie immediately becomes scarier, even though it's exaggerated most of the times. This movie was scary. James Wan can't do it wrong. He is so good at this game. The direction and camera work were astonishing, just like in the original. The music was very very chilling. The nun is probably one of the scariest things in recent horror movies, cudos for the design of this demon.

The characters were believable and the actress that plays Janet was the best of the bunch. The first part of the movie I think was more terrifying. The tension building is done perfect and even the most cliche scenes e.g. The fire truck toy scene and the TV scene were done in a very believable way and freaking amazingly shot and builded.

Of course you see that i rate it 8, so there are flaws. I love The Conjuring franchise and 8 is low rate for me, and I'm being generous, but i HATE CGI, and c'mon, but the Crooked man was a joke and darn ridiculous. The main demon (the old man) was not that scary too. I remember Batsheba and my hair stands up. The final 20-30 min were kinda boring and the great tension and build up the movie had just fell flat. There were times where the film looked and sounded like kids film, soo not that good.

Nonetheless The Conjuring 2 is a good movie and a great sequel. We can't expect to be scared like part 1, but it pretty much hit the spot. Watch it only in the dark and with headphones to really see it for what it is. If you don't get scared, kudos to you, cause I did.

Evil Dead (2013)
9/10
One of the bloodiest movies ever and one of the best remakes in horror history !
12 June 2021
I love the first Evil dead, even more than the the sequels, because I'm not a huge fan of horror comedies, I want my horror movies being actually horror. That's why the original is my favourite of the bunch. It was creepy, it was damn bloody and there was Bruce Campbell in it. Also I hate remakes, because they almost never are even remotely good, to the point of actually being very bad.

That's why I am absolutely thrilled, that a remake of one of the biggest horror classics is actually good, and not only good, but on a level so close to the original, that it is not even possible. Evil Dead (2013) is everything you want from a remake. It was made with respect to the original, but simultaneously adding more to the franchise, and being even more brutal and without the funny and slapstick bits, that the original three did have.

This movie is one of the bloodiest I have ever seen. It doesn't shy away in showing you all the brutality of the horror movies, a thing not common in Hollywood movies anymore. The thing i loved the most was the final "blood rain" scene. With the impossible amounts of fake blood used and the epic and creepy soundtrack, it was one of the best horror movie ending ever. The soundtrack was amazing through the whole movie The cimatography and directions was top-notch.

I gotta say that this film in not without its flaws. The characters were like terminators. They lived through so much pain, so much lethal injuries, that no human being can endure, and they still lived. Also I didn't care for almost andybody of them, except maybe Mia. This remake too was no so scary. The original, although more funny, was much more creepy too. The CGI was bad too, but thankfully it was used sparingly.

All in all - for the most part I loved it and I hope if Hollywood decides to do remakes - please make them like this or don't do it at all. Great horror, very much recommended.

Friends: The Reunion (2021 TV Special)
8/10
Great, but could've been more
30 May 2021
It was soo nice seeing all the main cast back together and at the end i almost shed a tear. It was emotional and funny at the same time.

I wanted more moments with the cast tho. More of the guessing game they played, more reaction to the bloopers. That was the funniest and best part of the film. Them sharing stories from the filming was very very interesting too. But the guest stars were just there. They almost had no screen time and I wanted to hear more from them, especially Janice or the Gellers. The celebs and random people interview took too much time in my opinion.

But I guess I am just too much of a fan of the main cast. The movie was good. We needed that kind of closure, and knowing that we may never see them together again was kinda sad. I think this movie closed the Friends last page for good, and I can appreciate that.

Chernobyl (2019)

Amazing - the most realistic portrayal of one of the biggest tragedies, caused by humans
9 May 2021
As a citizen of one of the ex-communist countries, I can say that this Mini-series is absolutely perfect in everything it did. Everything is just as it was back then - the huge and bland apartment building, the insides of the apartments (along with everythign in them) is just as it was, and quite frankly, there are apartments that look like this even nowadays (babushka apartments), the clothes, the haircuts. The people look the same as they were back then. Great job from everyone in that department.

Everything in this series is perfect - the music, the brutally scary sound effects and ambiance. The cinematography was breathtaking to say the least. There are many scenes that i won't ever ever forget. The scene with the 3 brave young men, coming down in the reactor, in the contaminated water, risking their lives, knowing that they surely will die, was astonishing. The scene with the rooftop cleaning was one of the most intense sequences I have ever seen, with the geiger counter escalating more and more and the look of the exposed reactor - like looking directly into hell itself. And the fact they shot it in one shot following just one of the liquidators, stumbling was just unbelievable. And don't get me started on the scene in the hospital with the survivors - with their skin melting, one of them actually missing his face - one of the most disturbing things I have ever seen - horror and non-horror included.

The acting was perfect, the characters were perfect, the make-up was fricking brutal and very realistic.

The series is rather new, but I am sure it will come down in history as one of the best things ever made in the cinema industry and an example of how to make a tragic story even more brutal and crushing, than you have ever known. Truly terrifying experience, not for the weak-hearted, but a must watch for SURE!

Terminator Genisys: the sequel that we never wanted
22 January 2021
The only reason I am giving this movie a rating higher than 5 is because i love the Terminator franchise, I love Arnold Schwarzenegger and (although in this film she is nothing special) I love Emilia Clarke.

The first two, and especially the 2nd movie were amazing. T2: Judgement Day was and always will be one of my alltime favourite movies in every genre i have ever seen. But cmon, man this is the 5th movie in the franchise, along with the TV series (which everyone liked, but I think its nothing soo spectacular and special, except maybe Summer Glau). Just how many more movies will these guys make. It's getting ridiculous. The CGI in Genisys was abysmal, it was like a video game, and The Last of us 2 looked more real than this thing. The only CGI that looked good was the young Arnie. The endoskeletons in T2 looked wayy more realistic and T2 is almost 30 years old. Genisys tries to do stupid comedy bits (like the one in the prison) that are just so out of place and so stupid that I hadto cover my eyes. The guy that played Kyle Reese was awful and too macho for that character. The helicopter scene was one of the worst things I have ever seen, flying like a freaking spaceship or something. They completely destroyed the John Connor storyline and with it - the first 2 parts. The John Connor character became meaningless and that may be the worst sin that Genisys made.

There were thing I liked though. I loved that Arnie was back, the scene old Arnie vs young Arnie was good. And we heard the full Terminator theme for the first time since T2 in the ending credits, which always gives me goosebumps. But just, please for the love of God stop doing sequels to Terminator, nothing good will ever come out of this. I still haven't seen Dark Fate, but I'm getting a feeling it will be even worse. I can't give a rating of 1 or 2 for a movie starring Arnold, but just stop it, you are loosing it Hollywood...

The Conjuring (2013)
9/10
One of the scariest and most terrifying horror movies in the past 10 years - and I don't even take into consideration that itis based on a true story !
19 December 2020
The Conjuring is a modern horror movie set in the 70s, which on it's own is a great idea, because it makes the story even more scary. The 70s are scary - there is no doubt about that, with the screeching doors, oldc reepy houses, retro feeling. The Conjuring grabs your attention in the first 5 mins of the film and it never lets you go.The scares are almost constant.Every 5 to 6 mins there is something either scary, disturbing, horrifying or jumpscare-y. The tension is unbelievable. I don't even start to understand the people that are saying that this is one of the worst horror movies..ever?? The story itself is cliche, the house, the exorcism too. But the way the scares are delivered, the originality in the scares themselves are what makes this horror gem great. Every scene with the "hide and clap" game was brilliant, just playing with sound and your imagination. The sounds are terrifying( maybe the best part of the film), the cinematography is dope, the music is very very creepy with the trombone just playing one tone that just sends chills down your spine. The acting is great, especially from the mother and one of the girls (the one that sees the demon hiding behind the door- that scene where she just describes whatshe is seeing is chilling to the bone). What I liked very very much in The Conjuring was that the ghost, the demons, the scary stuff, themeatof the story isn't shown in detail. It's always what is in your imagination that scares you. Every time someone enters an old room of the house I was on the edge of my seat..I didn't know what to expect. That's because I didn't whatch the trailer, if you haveseen it- you have seen all the scares, so it becomes just stupid waiting for them all the time.

Believe me, I have watched soo many horror movies- to the reaaaly old ones, to the modern classics, to the stupid B-movie crap. Rarely someof them scare me, much less to keep me terrified after the end. The Conjuring and REC (the Spanish version) are one of those movies, and for me this is how HORROR should be made. I loved it!

The Descent (2005)

The Descent - one of the best and most original horror movies of the 2000-2010s
19 December 2020
I watched The Descent 12 years ago for the first time, after taking a break from horror movies, because i was young and they gave their toll on me - I couldn't sleep well. After the break I decided to give The Descent a chance - and what a first horror movies it was, it completely blew me away, so after 12 years I decided to give my review to it. This brutal horror movie has everything the genre needs - it has great scares, crazy amount of gore and lets not forget the claustrophobic feeling it has, more so than any other movie, in any genre I have watched. The scares are amazing, I still can't forget the nightvision scene, I jumped 1 m from my seat, it was so unexpected and chilling. The monsters, while not that terrifying (hence the 9 score, not a 10) were well made and believable. The characters were good. I love movies with male cast, I find them way more serious. But this time the all female cast did actually good adn didn't irritate me.The ending was very very dark and I loved it (I don't know if it is the original ending or not). The music at the end was just perfect and greatly captures the feeling of dread and hopelesness the main character felt there. The story was original and interesting all the way through.

If you have watched a lot of the horror genre and you think to yourself "man these horror moviesare getting very boring and predictable", just watch The Descent and you will see that there are still great horror films thatcan still give you chills and make you feel miserable (in a good way) after watching them. A true horror masterpiece and maybe the best british horror movie ever! That's what The Descent is for me!

No country for old men is a great film, taken down by the ambiguous ending
10 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I liked this film, I really did. It was amazingle directed, shot and the lack of music is what made it even more realistic. All the actors did a great job, especially Javier Bardem, who just stole the film. Anton Chigurh is one of the best villains I have ever experienced, ever. He gave us one of the most tense scenes in the history of crime genre. The motel scene and the gas station scene will always be in my mind when i think of intensity. Cudos to the actor playing the gas station owner, he played his part amazingly well too. But Javier is on another level, every scene with him was highjacked by his performance. What a brilliant actor and what a terrifying psycho villain. As I said I liked the lack of music very much. We hear just the wind and it was enough, it made the scenes with Chigurh even more intense and scary. Josh Brolin was great too, gotta give him that.

BUT, what I didn't like and almost ruined the whole experience for me was that over-the-top, i'm-too-intelligent-so-you-cant-get-me, only-for-smart-guys ambiguous ending. Why does it had to be like that. I didn't believe the ending until the final credits rolled aaalll the way down. I get it, there was a hidden meaning in all this and bla bla, but it was so badly made, so not in tone with the intensity of the whole movie, that honestly it was BAD. I can accept the fact that we never truly get what happens with the money( the whole plot device I might add), what happens with Anton, who the heck was he. I can accept the fact that they killed the MAIN CHARACTER...OF SCREEN like he was the most minor thing to ever happen in the film. But the final scene just was the killer for all this.

I'm still giving No country for old men a 8/10, because everything before the final 20 minutes was brilliant, i can't find a fault in anything before that. It was absolutely stunning. The final 20 minutes was just pompouse crap...

127 Hours (2010)
8/10
Great tale of how amazingly strong the human spirit is
18 September 2020
127 hours is a movie about the human spirit. This is not a dynamic, action-filled movie with a lot of cgi. This movie is tame, it settles in your brain slowly and is damn good at this.

The film is shot in almost only one location and with almost only one actor - the incredible James Franco in his maybe best performance in his career. The editing and Danny Boyle's directing is very smart, different from the majority of the movies. The cinematography for me is the biggest weapon 127 hours has. The cinematography is terrific with shot of the Utah canyons like i have never seen before, shots from the bottom of Aaron's bottle, the absolutely disgusting (but great) shot of him slowly drinking his urine from the bag. This is the films strongest part. And also James Franco - his acting was great, given that he didn't have anyone to work with, acting alone and with almost no lines. What that guy did was awesome. I like him since Pineapple Express but I think this is his top.

There are however some thing that were not as good. The music was kinda like I was watching some kind of a comedy movie, especially at the end, it really took the emotional impact it must had on the viewer. The scene with the arm was extremely overhyped too. I saw comments that it was one of the most brutal and realistic things ever on film, but it was just some average gore and not that impactful and brutal at all. The hype was just TOO MUCH. The flashback scenes although good were not important enough, they didn't shape the character of Franco, which at the end was almost the same guy we came to know from the beginning.

Apart from these not so serious flaws 127 hours was a very good movie, with amazing story about human survival and will, played perfectly by James Franco and a movie I will watch again sometime.

The Thing (1982)
10/10
A milestone in special effects in movies and in sci-fi movie history in general !
23 August 2020
John Carpenter's The Thing was included in almost every top 10 list i have ever seen (top 10 horror movies, top 10 sci-fi horror movies, top 10 movie aliens, top 10 horror ending etc.) I always wondered what is with this movie , why is it so special. I finally found out recently. I LOOOOVE practical effects, 1 mil. times better and more convincing than CGI effects. That's why i loved The Nightmare On Elm Street movies, The Blob, The Fly and others. But The Thing is in a league of its own. This movie's special effects are the best i have ever seen in my long practical effects movie history :)

And not only that, John Carpenter's masterpiece is very very original in it's story, the cast is all male (positive for me everytime, no stupid love story required), it has one of the most creepy and ambigious horror movie endings ever, it is super brutal, unrelenting, it has music score that perfectly fits the mood of the film, has one of the best opening scenes in horror movies, has amazing sound effects and it's special effects STILL hold up to this day - almost 40 YEARS !! after it's release. This is truly incredible. If i reaaaaly have to say something negative about The Thing it is that the acting is not something special and we never get to know the characters as much as I wanted, but this is something minor for me in comparison to the amazing movie that it is.

Some people say it's better than Alien. I don't know about that, Alien has a special place in my heart. But it comes very very close to Ridley Scott's masterpiece. What i don't agree with most reviewers is that it is one of the SCARIEST horror movies ever. One of the BEST - yes, but scariest - i don't think so. But it is very atmospeheric, very creepy and very intense. The new wave of horror movies is much more scarier than The Thing, but The Thing is 40 years old and everytime i watch it it gets better. Undoubtedly one of the best horror movies in history, not only sci-fi. The difibrilator scene is just pure classic and one of the scariest and jaw-dropping scenes in horror movie history...

Very very creepy !
11 July 2020
I know i'm in the minority here when i say i actually enjoy found-footage horror movies and I have watched almost all of them. They are not spectacular, but there are a few very very creepy films - Paranormal activity 1,2,3, REC (THE BEST of them all) and this scary horror flick.

The story of the movie is kinda original, it's not your generic horror movie premise. It's about Alzheimers disease and what it does to you and your family and loved ones. That part of the movie was actually pretty good. The two main actresses playing Deborah and Sarah Logan are very good and I felt their despair and pain going through it all. The film crew was bad, I didn't like any of them at all. The main girl was just screaming all the ime and acting very unnaturaly given the situations they were into.

The second part of the movie was very creepy and disturbing for me. A lot of the reviewers here don't like it, because it was "too supernatural" - wait, what? So, Deborah had some very disturbing scenes, the tone was dark and the terror was real. The final scene with Deborah and the girl will stay with me forever. That was one of the most disturbing images in a horror movie I have ever seen, and I have seen a whole lot. I have e feeling I will never forget it, so well done. The ending was kinda stupid, we could have lived without that, just the generic horror movie ending.

Consider this - this film was made with only 1 milion dollars, almsot with no budget and for it's money it was just great. I liked it very much and definately will recommend to any real horror movie fan and especially found-footage horror movie fans. Very very nice and creepy.

"But I believe TV series like this can save the world"
22 June 2020
I'm not into animation. I just can't take it seriously like I do with the live action movies. That's why I haven't watched a lot of animations, let alone anime-style. There are great computer animations like Shrek, How to train your dragon, etc. but for the traditional animations i have reserves.

BUT THEN EVERYTHING CHANGED( haha) when I watched Avatar: The Last Airbender. What a great animation this is. Filled with heart, joy, laughs, but at the same time dark, showing the casualties of the wars, at times very intense. The characters were incredible and so full of life. Never have I felt attachment to a animated character before, but i did with Aang, Sokka, uncle Iroh and ESPECIALLY with one of the best characters ever on TV - Zuko. Zuko's character development and story arc were the best thing for me in this series. He went through so many transformations and crises, it was amazing to watch it. The story and the world created by the writers of the show was astonishing.

I didn't get into the show until Season 2, for me the first season was slow and repetitive but the second and third is where the show catapulted into the skies. The finale was one of the best in almost any show (can't beat Breaking Bad's "Felina" ), every story arc was completed and almost no questions were left unanswered( except maybe Zuko's mother but I can live with that).

The best animated shows for me are this amazing show and South Park. I love both of them but can't compare them because they are the absolute opposites.
