Fun.
23 July 2023
Is it a little fan service-y? Yes. Is it kinda silly, and maybe a bit more childish in tone than usual for a Star Trek ep? Sure. But you know what? Not everything needs to be about THE FATE OF THE ENTIRE GALAXY. If you like dark and gritty, there's other Star Trek series out there for you ( ones that take themselves way too seriously if you ask me ).

This is what I want from Strange New Worlds, and it's what keeps me watching and enjoying this show ( and Lower Decks ). The OG series was silly as hell at times. Maybe the execution could have been better overall, but you know what? This was FUN.

Canada's ahead of the Race already.

One episode in and it's already better than AS5. What these queens lack in polish and funds they more than make up with campiness, personality, charismauniquenessnerveandtalent, and FUN. This was FUN. It made me want to see more, and get to know more about these queens.

Tone.

Fun enough, definitely one of the better entries from Into the Dark, even if the story is derivative and it very much wants to be Zombieland-but-with-aliens. Two lead actresses were good, rest of the cast range from passable ( woke frat guy ) to ooof ( mom ), diverse cast ( normal for Blumhouse, but still deserves a mention nonetheless ), not scary but i don't think that was the point of this ep, not a lot of FX but then again the budget can't be that big to begin with.

HOWEVER, there are some very serious issues being talked about in this ep, and the tone shift from " Life changing traumatic event" to " Meta Millenials LOL Aliens " was clunky at best. Not that i'm expecting that much from a show like this, but i dunno, stay in your lane? Or at least handle things better. The conversation they want to have would be a better fit in a more serious, darker ep imo.

Two Star Horror Stories.

I get that that budget on these can't have been that high, but geez are these bad. Not scary, super bland, badly written, " twists " that you can see coming from a mile away. Acting very inconsistent, as is tone.

The only really good thing about it is that there seems to have been an effort in making the casting diverse. If only the same could have been done about the rest.

Bad acting. Bad writing. Bad... twist? I don't even think you can call it that, it's so obvious. Just plain ole bad.

1 star, and it's not even the worst episode of the season.

Warning: Spoilers
Or how to turn something really serious into nothing but a joke. A tired one. Remember boys and girls if something bad happens to you, just get over it! Revenge fixes everything for everyone.

Sheesh.

Eww.

Ooof...

Warning: Spoilers
It's bad guys, it's real bad. Not even fun bad, just makes you want to stop watching. . Basic story premise is a bunch of tropes roled into one movie ( trip to Mars gone wrong, there's something in Mars that's beyond our comprehension, there's an A.I., can we trust it, can we trust those around you ... ), and all have been done better before. . Main story is boring, main cast are passable ( Katee Sackhoff does wonders with the script, there just isn't that much to do ), you can see the budget constraints, but then again maybe don't pick something you can't handle, or try to work around it? Nope. Definitely bit something more than they could chew. . The ending is just some trippy half baked 2001 ripp-off, the director really thought he had the talent to pull it off. He doesn't. . And about that ending, ***SPOILERS*** . . . So, the A.I. determined that the Human race was dangerous ( wow, so original ) because it was destroying the planet, so... IT destroyed the planet? So stupid. . 2* because i feel like they had enough budget that everyone in the cast got payed for their work.
