Like The Crazies in space
17 May 2015
First I must give this movie credit where credit is due: it is the first to tackle horror and fear in space in a long while, possibly even since Event Horizon. We follow the exploration of a rescue team called to investigate disappearances aboard a space station, and the results are chaos at best. Throughout the film we are given slight nods to old horror films, and even such tropes from video games like Dead Space. The set pieces are well done, with tiny corridors and steamy pipes strewn about. The film handles much like The Crazies, in which the space station inhabitants are driven mad by a virus. Where the movie differs, is in its refusal to reduce these characters to zombies. Much like the original outing of I Am Legend, these feral beings battle intimately with their sanity, using old memories to trap prey, making for a more sensible attempt at fearsome enemies. Overall not a bad film, a good indie sci fi as well. Worth a watch at least.

Overall a good descent into something new
28 August 2014
While a part of me wishes to dislike the film for attempting to insult my intelligence on a couple occasions, I cannot help but applaud it for its ambitious nature. Not since the Mummy have I seen a movie that blends its use of historical adventure (not unlike Indiana Jones or Laura Croft) seamlessly with its horror elements. I wouldn't compare this movie to the descent, nor any typical found footage film, as it does well enough to stand on its own two feet. The cast is decent, never boring the audience but sometimes failing to make us follow their logic. The set pieces are grand, and from the first floor to its hundredth you might actually believe the wonderfully crafted fiction that compliments it all so well. Overall this movie is well worth watching for anyone looking for the thrills and chills associated with the history of the Paris Catacombs, provided they suspend the insatiable appetite to ask "why?"

A cavalcade of Horror
8 June 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This film Improves upon the first in many ways, though not so much in scares. Sometimes spooky, hilarious, and downright bloody gross, this film is a worthy sequel to a now beloved genre of short films. The best part is never being tied to one plot. While episode 2 offered us nothing too new (no spoilers), episode 3 cleansed the palette, ditched the writer and director, and dove head on into madness via the imaginations of a new duo. The only real sacrifice with this film is that it leaves behind the spine tingling haunts and beefs up the gore, but this is more so a nitpick. Looking forward to what comes next from these disturbingly gifted minds!

Something Twisted This Way Comes
25 April 2013
Oversexed, grotesque, and downright unnecessary at times, Hemlock Grove is a twisted tale that is sometimes hard to bare. Yet, here I am three episodes in and admittedly drawn into this world full of pitch dark writing and equally sinister characters. This show is a small time Offspring of Grimm and American Horror Story, where monsters run rampant inside some deeply disturbed sex crazed teenagers. The backbone of this story, however, lies in the mystery and unforgettable bonds and betrayals these actors dish out (though not without its flaws). Certainly a show not to pass up, and a solid entry point into the genre of " fantasy loves depravity."
