Evil Dead (2013)
A great ''re-imagining'', not ''remake''
I would like to get this out of the way in saying that this film is not a remake, its a re-imagining. it takes the basic concept of Evil Dead and uses it for its own purposes, never truly changing much, but expanding upon other parts that the original didn't and looking at other things differently whilst maintaining that core concept of Evil Dead. And boy was it fun to watch.
For starters, the practical effects were top notch, absolutely fantastic. The licking of the Stanley knife, the woman cutting her arm off with a electric meat knife, Mia getting her arm trapped underneath the car, the nurse Olivia ripping her face apart with a blade of glass, it all looked so good that it made me cringe and feel slightly sick, which shows that it works very well. In comparison, the small amount of CG that they did use felt quite awkward and silly compared to the practical effects, but very very little was used, so my complaints are minimal on this.
The characters, quite honestly, weren't all that great. the only person's name i remember is Mia, mainly because she is for the most part, the central focus of the movie, but thanks to IMDb's casting list, i now know the names. Mia's brother David, is quite useless for most of the film and is quite honestly boring for a fair majority of the movie. Eric, the guy in the glasses, i liked a bit more because he was actually trying to take action, but i spent the majority of the movie wondering when the hell he was going to finally die. He is stabbed in the shoulder with glass (which is 'repaired'' with duct tape), stabbed repeatedly in the eye with a hypodermic needle, shot at least around 30 times with a nail gun, which at one point, nails his arm to his chest. Then he is attacked with a crowbar, smashing his hand in half (which he also ''repairs'' with duct tape)and hit a couple of times over the head with the crowbar, which i thought would surely kill him. nope. He still lives until being stabbed in the stomach with the Stanley knife a little later on, where he finally decides that death is a good idea. He was one resilient b**tard. The nurse Olivia is trying to take action with Mia's drug problem, but doesn't last that long and is soon offed in a pretty nasty fashion. David's girlfriend, Natalie has about 4 or 5 lines in this movie, not really featuring to the point that i actually forgot she was there. Overall, the characters, i couldn't really care for due to the lack of development for them, but the actress who played Mia i believe did a very fine job in the movie, being the only character i could give at least a single sh*t about. The exposition in the beginning of the movie is pretty laughable as well, but i believe its just trying to move things a bit quicker, but yet somehow, the movie felt slow in quite a few places, so indeed, the pacing was a bit off in this one.
Now for comparison to the original, which is one of my favourite films. obviously, it doesn't hold up the original and i didn't expect it to, so it was a good choice to move away from the original and make something else with the same concept. I loved the references, the Olds 88 that Mia is sat on in the beginning, the porch swing out the front of the cabin, the evil camera view, the cutting the arm off moment, Mia losing her arm as well, the necklace, the boomstick and goddamn it the chainsaw. A big smile spread across my face when that appeared and it was not disappointing in its usage. The one reference which i have mixed feelings about is the tree scene, which they somehow make more horrifying that the original did, to which i just sat there and cringed the entire time it happened. But the one that i got most excited about was right after the credits. Ash Williams in the dark, gruffly says the word ''Groovy'' then turns to the camera and thats it, but that is all i needed to get extremely excited. The chin is returning for another round with the Deadites and i cannot wait.
Overall, this was a fun film. Different, but yet the same as the original and works pretty well. Its not really scary, but incredibly gory and is not for the faint hearted when it does get bloody. The characters,as i said, couldn't care about all that much due to lack of development beyond ''hey, I'm your brother and your my sister'' or ''we used to hang out years ago'', but what the movie did get right, it did quite well. its creepy, slightly unsettling, disturbing and i would definitely say worth the watch, especially for classic Evil Dead fans, so go see it if you haven't. Now if you'll excuse me, i'm going to go wait very eagerly for Army of Darkness 2.
The Last Stand (2013)
utterly delightful trash
after 10 years of absence as a lead character in any movie, hes back in the saddle, and i'm loving every second of it. i can see clear problems with this film, questionable plot devices, factual errors and more. but i could not care, its not a perfect film, but its the perfect Arnie formula. full of one liners, explosions, creative and overly bloody deaths, a Corvette that has over 1000hp and defies what a car can actually do, this film just screams testosterone.
a quick run down: Ray Owens (Arnie) is the sheriff of a small town called Summerton, expecting a quiet weekend (which once someone says that in a movie, you know its gonna be the opposite) when the leader of a drug cartel is broken out and speeds towards the Mexican border in the Corvette i spoke of. His ragtag team of deputies are the only hope of stopping him before he gets to the border. Why the FBI can't stop him is beyond me, but id always prefer Arnie delivering justice instead of Forest Whitaker, who spends a lot of this film being angry or wide eyed in worry, never really doing anything helpful. the side characters are quite likable but not hugely fleshed out, just enough to gather that they've all known each other for a while and there is love in the air. Johnny Knoxville is hard not to like. the first sentence he speaks in the film easily sets the tone for his character. at first i thought they had just lifted his character straight from the film ''walking tall'' with Dwayne Johnson, but i was wrong. Knoxville just does what he does best. be one crazy son of a bitch.
overall, its flawed and stupid, but by god is it fun to watch, which is what Arnie is well known for. he steps back into his action star shoes with ease and reminds us that he will always be the king of the action movie genre. If you watched Arnie back in the day and haven't seen this movie, go watch it now. it brings a nostalgic feel after his long absence and its brilliant to see him back again. welcome back Arnie, we missed you.
Gridiron Gang (2006)
this films holds something quite special
our story starts out with young black teen named Roger Weathers in a juvenile detention centre, who immediately rises up out of bed and starts beating another inmate in bed. he is thrown into the block and Dwayne Johnson as Sean Porter, berates him for his choices and tells him if he doesn't change his act, he will end up dead by 21. he is released from prison the next day and sure enough is run over and killed in a drive by shooting. his cousin Willie, under the stress of everything that has happened, shoots his step father who has been abusing his mother. he is sent to the same prison that roger was at. and believe or not, this all happens within the first 15-20 minutes, and its shocking.
what i really liked about this film, was its message. its very similar to other inspirational sports films, but Gridiron gang holds that message dearly, never letting go of what its trying to tell you and keeps it strong. it shows that people who've failed at the system can still achieve and be something, learning how to work together with your fellow man, no matter what street of boulevard you're from. it shows gang culture as corruption, taking the potential that people have and throwing it away, while Gridiron gang is giving it back. you really want to see these people succeed and although they lose the championship game, they emerged as winners, which is what they and we wanted.
the film also opens with this message: 75% of people who go to prison always end up back in, and Sean Porter wants to change that. and he does. the fact that this is also a true story puts more heart in the message its trying to tell, and never once lets up on that message. it knows what its trying to say and goes beyond that as well, going deep within the characters and their struggles so that when they win, its all the more victorious. i seriously recommend this film, its beautiful in its entirety, wonderful in telling its message and saddening with its losses, go see it if you haven't.
Rampage (2009)
Uwe Boll almost had something here
i don't like Uwe Boll.he makes some of the worst films I've seen, he is arrogant to the point of madness and has no true care about what he is making. Rampage could have been a step up for Boll, it has interesting ideas that could have been well done. but no, its bad, really bad.
Brendan fletcher was the only one who seemed to be putting in any effort to act, and he did well with what material he was given. a role like that is hard to do properly, and he did quite well. however, this cannot be said for the rest of the film. my main problem is how its shot. the camera wobbles so badly when the rampage starts and continues to do so through out the massacre. it adds to the realism slightly, but less wobble would have been much better, and a lot less disorientating. instead of a car chase later in the film we get some interesting close ups of a cars grill and rear lights, which cut back and forth very quickly with lots of flashes. but what gets me the most is the fact that Boll tried to make the slaughter of dozens of innocent people stylish. slow motion shots are mainly used and are very out of place and just shouldn't be there. if you're making it look realistic Boll, don't make it bloody stylish, especially the massacre of innocent people. those parts disgust me.
his diving into the killers mind isn't all that good either. the beginning scenes of him living out his daily life drag for the 30 minutes it lasts, whilst having flash forwards of what he is going to do. these scenes aren't helped by a terrible supporting cast, his mother, who cannot act to save her bloody life, his father, who does OK. thats all I'm giving him. his friend Evan is a annoying tit as well, and a big part in our main characters plot.
and then i come to the next problem. the ending. he frames his friend Evan, by luring out to the woods with promises of paint ball. he tasers him, puts the gun in Evans hand and makes him kill himself, switches clothes and disappears back home. Evan had been making videos saying that the world is over populated and we need to slow down etc. so the evidence all stacks up against Evan committing the atrocities that happened that day. but then our main characters puts a video online saying it was him who did it, his own brand of population control and then runs away, completely unravelling his entire plan that he worked so hard to pull off. F*ck you Boll, F*ck you.
overall, its a Uwe Boll film, the cinematography's terrible, the characters are terrible, the acting is terrible, the set up was good, but the execution was just terrible. he almost had something here though, and i feel sorry for him for it. but like all films he does, it falls into the same trap.but at the end of the day, its Uwe Boll, need i say more?
Tucker and Dale vs Evil (2010)
surprisingly original and funny
Tucker and Dale are two best friends who have just bought a vacation home in the woods. but there fun is stopped by a group of college kids, cause while rescuing one of them from drowning in her unconsciousness (she hit her head) the rest run away thinking the two to be vicious murderers. this is fueled by a typical scary story (hillbillies murdered a group of people in that same area, but one survived) told by one of the kids, miscommunication between the two groups and plenty of amusing accidental suicides that are interpreted as murders.
to start, what makes this film different to other horror comedies are two things. 1. the film is backwards. the usual villains and hero's are switched around to start, the college kids being sort of unintentional villains thinking that they are saving there friend, while the hillbillies are the hero's mistaken as villains who think these kids are killing themselves and also trying to kill Allison, the girl the two saved.
2. it avoids and upends clichés. it doesn't make many mistakes in being original while making fun of some horror clichés. i enjoyed the whole miscommunication between the two groups, with both jumping to ridiculous and amusing conclusions in amongst the panic. i don't think a single murder in this was on purpose, one trips and jumps into a wood chipper, two impale themselves on sharp sticks, one even shoots himself in the face while taking the safety off the gun. most of these are seen by the college kids as murder due to the way its seen (tucker holding the kid who jumped in the wood chippers legs)
overall this film ticks all the boxes to be a cult classic. its surprisingly original, has some great characters, gory deaths and is really funny to watch. its quite different to what you would normally watch in horror comedies and it succeeds really well in what it does. i would recommend this quite highly.
You Don't Mess with the Zohan (2008)
great fun to watch
with his movies, Sandler tends to be hit or miss. this one hits, and it hits rather well, in which it has become one of my favourite Sandler films. you can try and hold back from laughing but one way or another, Sandler will break through. and you will laugh.
where a lot of the comedy comes from is the main character, Zohan. Sandler gets lost in this role, making this high energy, out of place but hilariously bad ass character. i genuinely forgot i was watching a Sandler film a couple of times. both him and his rival, The Phantom, defy the laws of physics many times, including an immunity to pain, broken bones and bleeding, defying gravity and more, adding for some really funny moments.
i find the controversy with this film amusing, because i can see in instances that it is borderline offensive. i don't know too much about Israeli and Palestinian culture, but enough to work out a good amount of the jokes told, and how offensive this film was getting. although it does seem to exhibit signs that the Israeli Commando's are ungodly powerful (they kind of are really)
the story was OK, well done in places, but by the end becomes badly structured (the ancient sound that was thrown in in the last 10 minutes destroys the villain who was introduced in the last 20 minutes. seriously? bit of a rush for time i think)
but the story isn't what really counts here, nor is it in a fair few of Sandlers films. you're there for the comedy, and a lot of the time, that's where Sandler excels. The Longest Yard and Happy Gilmore didn't have brilliant plots, but featured some really funny gags.
overall, you will have a blast with this film. its not ground breaking stuff, the acting's decent, the comedy is damn funny and energetic, and Sandler in this lead role is a surprising amount of fun to watch. it is a little mindless, but whats wrong with turning your brain off every once in a while and enjoying some dumb fun?
Cast Away (2000)
good, but not as good as i remember
when i was a child, i really liked this film, being one of my favourites for a long time. i finally watched it again a few days ago, and I'm sad to say, its not as good as i remember it.
granted it is still a good film, a very decent one. Hanks carries the role very well, never for a second giving you the impression that hes just acting, he makes you believe he's there, making him the soul of this film. his interaction with Wilson is believable and well done, creating this sort of one sided relationship that battles the loneliness of the island, keeping him going. another device used to keep him going is a package. some packages float ashore from the plane crash, and he opens most of them except one, a package with wings on, which he is determined to deliver. it keeps in with his character and makes him all the more believable to watch.
the thing is though, it always seems to be when its just Hanks on screen that the movie becomes really strong. I liked the part towards the end where hes now off the island. he has new shoes, he has ice, all the food at the party, the lighter, all these things that he never had for those 4 years are just there, and it makes him appreciate them more. its the little things that you take for granted is part of the message and its done really well.
one thing that did annoy me on the island though is the pacing. it felt rushed, some scenes barely lasting a minute, not giving you enough time to let it sink in. if zemeckis had cut some shorter scenes out, allowing more time for more meaningful scenes i would have liked it more. He gets the loneliness right, but it all goes by a bit quickly, not giving you the feeling of the long amount of time he spent on the island
when other people are on screen how ever, the film seems to be at fault. its nothing bad, it just loses its strength, particularly the end. i felt quite empty at the forced whimsical ending zemeckis played. it ruins the films a little and loses some of good it had been building up. the ending of Hanks relationship with his wife was played well to start with, but falls flat as it progress'.
overall its still a great film, the acting is solid, the story is well done and sad at times, but is spoilt by certain elements, mainly the forced ending and side characters. its a strong film with a few cracks in but i would still recommend it. it just saddens me that it wasn't as good as i remembered it.
Serbuan maut (2011)
over hyped and underwhelming
many many people say this film is very, very brutal and a lot of fun to watch. it is brutal indeed, but fun? not really. it hits the annoying repetitive mark just over half way in and continues to drag right to the end.
If the film actually had proper characters and story, i would have enjoyed it a lot more. every time i guessed what was going to happen, i got it right. there are no surprises here what so ever, just poorly done character development and a very poorly done story.
now i'l talk about the fighting. it is indeed, brutal and well done in places, but like i said above, becomes repetitive. they do mix the fighting a little bit, varying from shooting until they run out of ammo, switching to there fists and using a couple of sharp things here and there. heads bounce of walls, a man gets his neck slammed on the big splinters of a broken door and knives enter peoples bodies and gets quite bloody. but for all the hype people gave it, i remained underwhelmed for the majority of the film.
i'l take an example of a film in similar regions, Warrior King. (the protector in US and tom yung goong in Asia) i didn't like the story in warrior king, i found it boring and badly structured. the fighting on the other hand, was bloody fantastic. there is a lot more variety in this, more fun to be had, and warrior king did do some great camera work (the 4 and half minute one take of Jaa ascending the stairs while kicking heads was very well done) and to be honest, it felt more brutal that The Raid. There's a lot less blood of course, but there's more pain to be felt in Warrior King, cause when someone gets hurt, you really feel it. in The Raid, you feel the pain, but a lot less often.
overall its not very good, over hyped and very repetitive. i wont talk about the characters because they're just cardboard cut outs that kick things. i really think this could have been a better film if they just put more time into making characters and a good story, and not a couple of ways of creatively killing someone. or just more variety, then i may become interested.
Dead Island (2011)
The zombie game everyone was waiting for
I really, really like this game. its the first true zombie game that uses first person (i wont count left 4 dead because they run, and death isn't an energy drink) the many, many weapons, many, many zombies and a big island as your sandbox to play in, its becomes a huge ton of fun, very quickly.
the controls where great, all the attack, aim other buttons are pretty much where they should be, the choice of switching between standard digital swinging to analog was a really good thing too put in, i discovered it after id completed the game and it made the impact when hitting zombies with a sledgehammer all the more satisfying.
the characters where OK, nothing great, the each have a little back story but not too much, they mainly serve as puppets to their skill sets more than anything. although i did like Sam B's song 'who do you voodoo b*tch. and Sam B.
the story isn't too bad either, i liked the twist that comes with the Ryder White campaign. but i have to ask, what the hell happened to sinamoi and everyone else? did the group just leave them there? they risked there lives dozens of times for these people, indicating that they are trying to keep them alive as much as possible, and then they just leave on the island to be nuked by military. what a bunch of d*cks.
but to be honest, i didn't care about the story (although the trailer was very moving i will admit, as is the new trailer for dead island riptide (embarrassingly girly squeal) i was in love with how much ass you could kick, i loved the variety, i loved the combat, i loved the different zombie types and its a damn fine game. cannot wait for the sequel
The Expendables 2 (2012)
great nostalgic fun
this film is a lot of fun. a hell of a lot of fun. its a great nod to the old 80s and 90s action films and i loved it. i swear to god, this film has a bigger body count in the first 10 minutes than the whole of the first film. every person that pops his head out has his head popped off (literally, the amount of exploding heads is slightly dizzying)
the characters are good, each with their own personalities, some more fleshed out than others. with the returning cast it also features some more expanded roles from the first film, like Trench (arnie) and Mr. Chruch (Bruce Willis) and new people. Chris Hemsworth is OK, but his entire set up as a character is just simply to die. hes got it all on the plate, the beautiful girlfriend, hes going to quit from the team and he's new. Van Damme was great fun as the villain, but out of all the characters,my favourite was Chuck Norris, the mighty god himself. no really, the portray him as some sort of god like being, he saves everyone there from a lump of bad guys and a tank, and just walks on cool as the breeze. they even slide in a Chuck Norris fact, but part of what sold it for me was every time he made an appearance shooting people at the end, there was just this weird sound that accompanied him, making him all the more mythical.
the story is a standard one, a mixture of revenge and stopping the villains from taking over the world and blow everything else to f*cking smithereens. the end fight between sly n van Damme could have been a bit longer, but it was still brutal fun none the less.
there is small issue i have tho. in the beginning its said that Lee Christmas' woman is cheating on him. i expected some sort of part towards the end where he dumps her in an amusing way. i didn't even get that. as a matter of fact, we didn't get anything, they mention once more somewhere further in and thats it. seriously? thats an issue that did kind of need to be addressed in a better fashion.
apart from that (and a wall thats invincible against tank shells) its a damn good movie. damn, damn good for a tribute to old action films. the cast is part of what holds this together. some are more recent, but most are the classic people you want to see. its giant eye candy, its great to watch, but shut your brain down for a while. just enjoy the roller-coaster and you'll want to ride it again
Ted (2012)
straight into my top 10 comedies
this is just...hilarious. and i mean gut bustingly hilarious. it has been a while since i laughed this hard watching a comedy. its Seth's signature slightly childish but at the same time clever comedy and i loved every second of it.
obviously the premise is about a boy and his bear who he wished could really talk when just coincidentally a shooting star pops along (when you wish upon a star) and he comes to life. he's at first surprised, but accepts it quickly. The parents reactions by the way are quite funny.
after Ted's celebrity status and Patrick Stewart's fantastic narration, Ted and john have grown up and smoke weed, laze about the house and discuss some hilarious ideas. the jokes are quite often inconsistent but hilarious all the same, especially when Ted gets job (i won't ruin it for you, but its one of the best parts of the film, although its a bit short)
i know I'm using the word hilarious a lot, but that is the keyword in this film. its typical Seth and thats what we want, thats what we got and i loved it.
there's only 2 things that i didn't really like. the first was mark Wahlberg's accent. most of it wasn't bad its just every time he said a word with an -r at the end made him sound like a total ass. its only nitpicking though and doesn't affect the overall film.
the second was that the film, although brilliant, wasn't really that quotable. there's no lines that could be repeated in everyday conversation unless set up which to be honest, is a once every so often opportunity, and by then you may have already forgot.
overall, its brilliant. utterly utterly brilliant. i see people have panned this film for its childishness and inconsistency. sorry people, these are attributes of Seth. its what we love him for. we wont expect anymore, or any less.
District 9 (2009)
i cant see why everyone loves this
I admit this film tries, and it tries rather hard and almost succeeds.
everyone says this is inspiring, original and brilliant. i see a slow, relatively boring piece that has been done before. i will admit though, i did like some of the movie. i liked Sharlto Copely as Wikus and considering it was his first film, his performance is nicely done. i liked the CGI, it looked very real, it did actually feel like they were there. but its only the alien father and son (thats quite funny to see) that you feel for. the rest of the aliens just seem like puppets, clicking and growling and making no impact, even in death.
and thats a big problem with this film, you are supposed to feel for the race. its basically a take on racism and how you're supposed to feel for the race, but i didn't. not even when it showed the room full of the 'prawn' carcasses that had been experimented on. the music was right, the acting was right, the feeling was not.
another thing with this movie, its really jumbled. it starts out like a mockumentary, but then switches to a cinematic style without you even realise it. its like it takes styles from a few different movies and just threw them in, not caring how it went. and need i say about that f*cking singer. you heard her/him in avatar, black hawk down and others and its supposed to make the scene more dramatic, but all i want to do is wrap a bat round that persons f*cking head.
and finally, the 3rd act. it doesn't inspire anything, its just taken a leaf out of Michael bays book and gone for action (granted it does look absolutely fantastic) but they could of done so much more.
overall, i cant see why this is regarded as one of the greats in sci fi cinema. its a jumbled telling of the Mose's story and i don't really like it. if you want real sci fi, go rent 2001 or Dr Strangelove by Kubrick.
Storage (2009)
a surprising little gem
This film surprised me, its a nice little gem thats hidden in the land of direct to DVD.
The opening has Jimmy and his dad watching Death Wish 2 in the cinema before his dad decides that he will be stabbed in the chest and die by the hands of a mugger on the way home. Do we feel for this character in any way? not really, he died literally about 2-3 Min's into the film, not enough to establish anything apart from he likes Charles Bronson, smokes, gets p*ssed of easily, and bleeds even easier.
in reality its only a plot point so jimmy can go work with his uncle in the storage facility which houses some shady peoples. a biker making crack, coke or some delicious treat, an absent paedophile that has pictures of tied up children in his luggage and a man with bloodstained clothing and a gun. its the latter that jimmy takes main interest into. in the end, him and his uncle break into the mans house and Jimmy's uncle (who's ex s.a.s by the way) tortures the man until he admits he killed his wife, and then kills him with a hammer (his head has the consistency of play doh when the hammer hits) and then the uncle finds out that he was actually innocent.
i found this quite clever, reversing who you believe is actually the villain, which turns out is Jimmy's uncle (he kills the nasty people, including that paedophile) but after we find this out, this is where the film loses its suspense that its actually kept well for a while, which is where it starts to go downhill slightly. not to much, but enough to affect the overall rating of the film.
overall its a decent and enjoyable thriller. it keeps it suspense for most of the film, the acting is decent but dips here and there and the story is actually decent as well. the death of the father is never revisited (apart from once in a slightly forced dream half way through) and its touched upon but never explored properly. but id still say give it a go, its not too bad.
The Bucket List (2007)
good, but not great
i was expecting a little more from this film. i had heard from a fair amount of people that this was a very good film.
what i got was, to its credit, was quite an enjoyable, funny and quite well told film. freeman and Nicholson were good, but not as good as they could have been, both being award winning actors and legends in the acting profession.
the story is of two completely different people (freeman being a car mechanic and general family man, Nicholson a billionaire tycoon) become friends after both being diagnosed with terminal cancer and sharing a hospital room. they create a bucket list of things they want to do before they 'kick the bucket' the bonding of these two should be one of the main themes of the film, but the amount of scenes showing this aren't that many. there are a few, just not enough.there is the speech at the end from Nicholson at Freeman's funeral which is a slight tear jerker,Nicholson's character being that the loner he is makes it all the more upsetting.
the comedy also, is a good bit of fun. while the bonding isn't that present in the film, the comedy between these two is enjoyable, working off of each other quite well.
overall, this is very decent film. not brilliant or stunning but with a plot idea like this and 2 of the best actors in the business, you expect more. its not perfect, but it still hits most of the marks of a good film, so i'm giving it a 7/10.
Superhero Movie (2008)
enjoyable
i was surfing through netflix when i came across the aforementioned film, Superhero movie. i remember watching this film a few years back but i barely remembered anything about it. i remembered that the recent 'movie' films have all been disgusting pieces of cinematic Hitler, but i saw that David Zucker of 'airplane' and 'naked gun' fame was directing and it also had Leslie Nielsen, so i set my hopes for somewhere in the middle.
The result:It works!! its a recent spoof comedy thats actually worth watching!!
granted it still falls into the same trap of making pop culture references, but there aren't enough to make it a total hindrance. it is very hit and miss, but actually hits more often than one would think. Drake Bell's performance was entertaining, but a good portion of his jokes are just looking awkward or disgusted, which once again, is hit and miss. I also enjoyed Leslie Nielsen's performance, but it was sad to see some of the material he had to do, but apart from that his world famous timing is impeccable.
overall, when its funny, its pretty damn funny, but when it flops, it really flops. it has the heart of the old spoof comedies which really adds to the film and makes it worthwhile to watch, but don't expect utter genius. put your standards in the middle, put your feet up, grab a beer and a joint and just relax and watch, you'll get more laughs than you'll expect.
