Criminal Minds: Ashes and Dust (2007)

Boadicea. For the intro alone, you should probably watch it.

When you type the name of this episode into google, it immediately presents you the option to search for the music in it. The first scene is nauseatingly beautiful - artistically speaking - and very scary. The way the family tries to get away from the flames and is cut off repeatedly is hauntingly well done.

My favorite Criminal Minds intro.

This has been the most disturbing Criminal Minds episode I have seen yet. Sure, there were other unsubs committing crimes beyond any imagination on this show, however, thanks to the depiction of the crimes, empathising is very easy here as you see both the view of the victims AND the killer very thoroughly.

One of my favorite episodes up to date, it has heart, horror without being disgusting and haunting shots and music.

I think the ending is overly melodramatic. I would have been satisfied with an "usual" solution to the case, which lead to me giving "only" 9/10.

Favorite quote of the episode: "Brace yourselves. I'm gonna teach you the meaning of LUST."

Swoosh, BADAM and Swish!

Now I do not know if it is me this time, but from the intro onwards, in this episode I get annoyed at all the background noises that are supposed to make a scene more scary. Sometimes a huge *BAM!* seems kind of lost though. Then there is the obligatory shadow on the wall and at least two special effect sounds for that. Shadows are louder these days.

The logics in this episode are a bit weird, some pieces do not really fit together, however it is quite entertaining. This might not have been a gem - at all, yet I am hooked and really want to know what is going to happen (this is a two-piece episode).

Altogether this episode seems like a mumbo-jumbo of simple film making techniques for the easily-amused, with a few interesting ideas and a very likable A.J. Cook.

Favorite quote of the episode: "Wh.. Reid! Are you sure we should... Split up?" I love clichés!

Watching Gideon at work has never been this interesting. This episode is special from the very beginning, as the happenings unfold before the viewer in flashbacks - we know the unsub from the start. As far as I can recall this has never been done to such extend and it makes the episode very exciting. Once more an episode refrains from using the famous "from picture to crime scene"-zoom but there are many interesting shots, particularly a simple mirror-shot that shows what the victims see.

What disappointed me was the end. I would agree that it is "necessary" in the course of the storyline but it just does not seem very realistic to me.

This episode is a MUST for every Criminal Minds enthusiast and despite the end it is remarkably done.

Favorite quote of the episode: "[...]but on the inside, we all look the same." (literally meaning the inside of a body)

Character-development for the win!
20 April 2011
This episode left me surprisingly happy and that is not because the case blew me away. The "whodunitism" of this episode is really not very high, however I feel that it is focusing on the actual characters (mostly Morgan, but with many interesting dialogues or statements of the other characters) and how they are dealing with a situation that puts their faith into each other to the test.

I love how the geekiness of Reid is depicted in the very beginning and in the same scene I am finally okay with Emily Prentiss being on the team.

I very much like the background information that is given on Derek, even though it might be a little much of the "hard on the outside, soft on the inside"-cliché, but then again - I am a sucker for clichés.

The end of this episode is leaving me very satisfied because I am always hoping to get to know the characters better through their actions. If you are however searching for something that will blow your mind away because of the brutality or action, maybe this should not be your first pick.

Favorite quote of the episode: "C'mon Hotch, we all have secrets."
