Fat City (1972)
Superb.
Superb piece of filmmaking.
It's a masterpiece.
Don't trust anyone who trashes this movie, and there are plenty.
It's as real, and as relevant, as ever.
It's a must see for anyone remotely interested in the time and place.
It's a glimpse into a world overlooked by many, but it's a worthwhile journey nonetheless.
This is just how it pans out sometimes.
There's beauty there too, in the backstreets, and bars, and in the stare of those we see.
Luckily there's a handful of bona fide American classics from around this time, most of which came and went, without the fanfare of mainstream flicks. Thankfully they're there for all to see.
The Estate (2022)
Hillarious
There's a reason this film is underrated and it's the same reason, the "Everything, Everywhere" movie got all the plaudits.
This movie has authentic comedic ingredients, delivered masterfully and seemingly effortlessly by authentic actors and actresses.
The topic is definitely more grounded in reality, than the current crop of comedies. Maybe not the reality, most everyday folk want to face or have faced, but the characters, perhaps exaggerated, remain painfully and perfectly plausible.
It's therfore entirely expected that it's overlooked, given the watered down drivel the movie watching public have become accustomed too.
Credit to the Writer, Director, and Cast for delivering this gemstone of a film, among all the tinsel that's left of a once glorious industry.
Cisco Pike (1971)
Nugget of gold.
It's simple. Trust noone who trashes this movie.
Kris Kristofferson is a natural. And Gene Hackman seems to have this endless gift for seemlessly tapping into his characters' best and worse traits.
Black Summer (2019)
Excellent
Skip the negative reviews, just watch the show and if you're remotely into the zombie genre you shouldn't be disappointed. The first Season is at least as good as any zombie show out there,
and if Season 2 is as promising, who knows what's next.
Bird Box (2018)
Surprising Good.
Ticks the right boxes. Certainly way above average for a modern day horror. It bares resemblance to one or two recent films, but they all do.
River Runs Red (2018)
EXCELLENT.
Well acted and Well written. Essential viewing for those remotely concerned about society. But for those who lack empathy and are fuelled by hate, maybe best stick to standard Hollywood fare.
The Hateful Eight (2015)
Suitably Impressive
Quintin Tarantino's number eight is yet another feather in the cap of the man who has unleashed a number of groundbreaking films, on the movie going public. Together with Django Uncahanied, this movie, turns a new twist on the modern Western. Both these films are rewarding in their own way for viewers who are willing to adapt to a fresh take on a classic genre. Many of his fans will not like the political undertones of these last two films, but more importantly, many neutrals and many of his most vocal critics will take notice of the growing maturity in his movie- making skills and choice of topic. The use of the outdoor elements in this one is fine touch, together with the timing of the flashbacks, a notable Tarantino trait. It's all about the politics however, and of particular note is the way the seemingly more compatible characters to Samuel Jackson's ex serviceman bounty hunter, are usurped by the man who may have been seen as one of his potentaily most lethal enemies, and not in an entirely predictable and hackneyed manner. One or two of them, see the error of their previous ways in this film and I expect that's the whole point if some of the viewers could do likewise. Some haters will always hate, but hopefully not like some of the hateful eight.
The Rise of the Krays (2015)
Diabolical
Make no mistake, this is a must miss movie. The principals perform like school children, who are dressed up for Halloween, but who find themselves with no proper party to go to. It's a bit like Bugsy Malone, only without the music and characters and story and necessary pizazz to make the grade. Seriously it's shocking. The writer must have made some poor producer an offer he couldn't refuse. It's that bad. Raised voices, chain smoking, preening and a general lack of lighting and stage props, are over used, out of sequence and quite unnecessarily at points, to compensate for the lack of accurate character portrayal, making it look unauthentic, almost like the outtakes from a poorly financed music video. Stick with Legend, it's far and away the most watchable adaptation to date.
The Killing (2011)
The Killing- Good Start. Slow Middle.Poor Finish. No Future.
I was engrossed for a full 12 episodes plus 45 minutes of the final eagerly anticipated installment, only for the climax to render all my previous assumptions about the quality of the production, completely obsolete. I found the conclusion to be amateurish in the extreme, and ruthlessly exploitative and irresponsible to any dedicated follower of the genre. I felt thoroughly abused by the absurdity of the ill conceived plot twist at the end. And I felt the finale went against what is acceptable in terms what is plausible and acceptable, within the realm of modern televisual fiction. The only consolation is that I won't waste a minute on any future series.
