The Aviator (2004)
overblown rubbish!
28 February 2005
After choosing to go and see this film for my 18th birthday on it's UK release on January 7th, i thought that this would be a great film. Following the Hollywood hype for months I was relieved when it finally came out even viewing it on the deluxe screen for £8.60!!!(around 14 dollars) per person!!, to enrich the viewing experience and to cope with three hours worth of Hollywood overspending. I can't say that I regret it because it has made me realise what a completely monotonous film this is, just flying and crashing planes ,which seems to go on for an ridiculously unnecessary time span. The ending is probably the worst i have seen for ages, not in anyway rounding of the film to an acceptable standard, just leaving it where most of the film has been for three hours prior. How it has been nominated for so many undeserved Oscars is completely beyond me, with the nomination for best film a joke!! I am relieved that million dollar baby won, being far more poignant and proof itself that it isn't about special effects and how many stars you shove into one film that wins, it is the content and the story. Even though some may be enticed by the big explosions and computer graphics with the plot of the aviator in general, there is a popular British saying that springs to mind: you can't polish a turd!and this was a real piece of s**t

Creep (I) (2004)
blood drenched delight!
28 February 2005
I am a self confessed woos when it comes to horror films so I could have murdered my cousin when she took me to see it with her friend, but as it was his birthday and they needed me, being the only one of us over 18 I felt slightly pushed into doing it. After being completely scared after about two minutes, Iconsoled in whether I should just sink into my seat and hide for 2 hours. However this was a great film bearing similarities, even though they have different settings, to wrong turn. OK there may have been the stereotypes (the English hating Scot)and the complete moments of stupidity in the film but remained solid. Franke Potente was good as the mutants dinner target and the "creep" bared and infectious laugh and wicked funny approach to his victims. (Oh just a quick message, if you are going to see this film, especially if you are a woman, you should cross you're legs, people who have seen this will know what am talking about!)This is a great B movie style film with the inexpensive existing set of charring cross being a great setting for a slasher horror. One to see but not great to watch with the kids!

overdressed to impress!
7 February 2005
At first glance oceans twelve would seem the perfect sequel. The cast are fantastic(and so too is there paycheck, i would imagine), it takes place in Europe and is directed by Stephen Sodernburg(excuse the spelling)who directed the first. However when you actually watch this mess you're perception deteriorates rapidly. The problem is that it is too clever for it's own good. Everything seems to slip into place perfectly and they seem to have an expert for every problem that they face along the way: A holographic egg, the control panel sliding down the perfectively placed zip wire, lifting a whole house etc. The first film was perfect, balancing perfectly, the technical stuff and the way that oceans eleven work with each other, whereas the sequel is to reliant on technical substance over major plot flaws. There is a nice turn in the form of Julia Roberts playing Tess pretending to be Julia Roberts(keep up!) and a couple of good cameos from Bruce Willis and Albert Finney, but Don Cheadle's English accent is just excruciating , playing on British Stereotypes rather than being truthful. Clever though this film is I still don't understand why they spent loads of money on technical gizmos and staying in hotels when they had the egg six days before the deadline or why they put the Chinese guy in the Arsenal bag, when the police weren't even looking for him! I would recommend this film if you are a die hard fan of the first film or are extremely bored, but as a great film, don't even think about wasting six quid for a ticket!

Closer (I) (2004)
impressive
18 January 2005
When i first went to the cinema with my cousin on 15th January we had planned to see million dollar baby. When the found we would have to wait four damn hours we decided to see closer. Closer is, in my opinion a great film. The humour is not stupid, does not rely on fart jokes, but instead is adult comedy at it's very best. I can tell you in two words why it is so good: Julia Roberts! Particularly in one scene where she and Clive Owen are arguing over her having sex with Jude Law(his character)in there apartment. The vivid descriptions of what she did are shocking and it takes a lot of stomach to say things such as "he f****d me and I came twice". Another element of the film which deserves credit is the beautiful sound track especially from Damien Rice which is depressing, but beautifully effective. In fact I was surprised that the UK censors only rated it a fifteen, rather than eighteen because this film is beautiful is heartbreaking, beautiful and extremely rude. One of the best contemporary dramas is recent years along with lost in translation and one of my personal favourites, Donnie Darko. Oh yeah and the it's good to see Julia Roberts back in the UK after noting hill.

Evita (1996)
OK, but a bit overlong!
14 September 2004
Evita is one of those films that you may push to one side and not really think of watching, and i can see why. There are too many songs in it and even though it is a musical i was hoping for some dialog to be introduced amongst it. The film also proves a bit too long for my liking and the same Argentian backdrop proves to be a little daunting and doesn't really grab you're attention as films should. However there is one thing that does stand out and that is Madonna's performance as Evita. She single handedly carried this film out of the incinerator and gave it some credibility. The scene with the infamous don't cry for me Argentina performance was the highlight of the entire film and is genuinely a moving moment. Antonio Banderas is OK but proves forgettable and there is a nice cameo appearance from Andrea corr as Peron's mistress. Overall this film is probably worth about 6/10, for nothing other than a knockout performance by Madonna

stuffy story trapped in ridiculous acting and ludicrous comedy
12 May 2004
There are a thousand and one problems with this film, but i only have time to mention a couple. Firstly I was under the impression that this was a comedy, but I didn't find it remotley amusing. The story is cliche and contains so many stereotypes about victorian life that it is beyond belief. There is also a problem with the length. This film was on at about midnight and lasted until gone one in the morning. A film this bad should not have lasted over ninety minutes and even then it is not even worth watching. The setting makes the film uncomfortable and is slightly sickening. Anthony hopkins was just embarassing and with a bad central performance the whole film is subjected to misguidance and in this case the film is just plain awful!

I'm not sure what to make of it
23 April 2004
When I saw the trailer for this film I was quite intrigued and I thought that it looked good. The acting was plausable and there were some genuinely funny lines like " sold to the man with no future". Parker Posey, tara reid and alan cummings in particular. However I did not think much of the songs on this film neither did I really believe the story line. Some moments are quite hard to take in and are pretty cliche or predictable. The inevitable getting together and kissing on the stage as Rachel Leigh cook is performing. It is a nice idea for a plot and despite the ridiculousness of it seemed to be amusing. This film though was a bit too girly but I did quite like some of the jokes and the strong performances some what save what could have been a terrible mess.

incredibly moving film!
22 April 2004
This is without a doubt one of the most original, touching and brilliant films that I have seen recently. Even my brother who dislikes everything that i mention was impressed. The cast were absoloutely superb, and in particular Kirsten Dunst and Josh Hartnet. Sofia coppola has really hit on to a winner with this film and the result is a film close up there with American beauty. The film is tragic but it doesn't make you cry and the way the girls live there life is genuinely upseting and keeps u watching the film until the end credits. The dark and subtle look at death and family tradegy makes this a treat and great to watch, Refreshing and superb.

I would recommend this film to anyone that likes original films with great direction and a bit of class.

great movie
9 March 2004
In my opinion Brittany Murphy is of the best young actresses around and this film shows it. Her performance as the troubled teenageer haunted by her father's death is tense and highly enjoyable. This is without a doubt her best performance since girl inrerrupted and she is more at home in this film than in Just married! The "baddies" were believable and Michael Douglas and Famke Janssen delivered solid performances. Extremely unpredictable Don't say a word is a fast paced atmospheric thiriller which I highly recommend! 4/5 DEFINETELY ONE TO WATCH!

Down to You (2000)
annoying!
4 March 2004
The annoying thing about this film is it's potential to be good movie! The dreadful narrating by the actors just ruins it. Stiles performance was perfectly fine but the goodie goodie approach to the film didn't work. Freddie Prince JR was a bit dissapointing but with the right direction could have been better. The story could be touching if it wasn't for the embarassing soppy love monologues that both stiles and freddie give in this movie. Because of the narrative bits this film stayed as nothing above a cheesy chick flick. It's a shame because u can see the great potential of this film!I even heard stiles herself say that she thought this movie was not very good!

Airspeed (1999)
far too predictable!!!!!
2 March 2004
Anyfilm that bears the unfortunate status of being able to make a seven year old guess the ending should be burned. That is why I am so mistified as too why this balding slice of turgid nonsense is still being sold in video shops. I sat down with my dad and my brother about five years ago, I was twelve and my brother was seven. they spent the main bulk of the film trying to figure out how to put a hole in the side of the plane so that they could get the girl out or something(I can't remember exactly) It took a while for someone to already realise that the reason that the plane was in trouble oin the first place was that there was a hole in the plane. The traffic controller then said to the dad( who pointed out the obvious) Now I know why you're the million dollar man. In that case we should all be billionaires! "You have too destroy the auto pilot" "But how" "It's quite complicated I will give you instructions" (About twenty minutes later) "Wait I have an idea"(smashes it with a base ball bat.

WELL DUH!!!!!!!!! The worst action thriller(if you can call it that) that I have ever seen

A bit frustrating
25 February 2004
First the good things about the film. The special effects were excellent and there were some genuinly funny moments. Jennifer Tilly was solid as Madam Leoni and Marsha thomason was perfectly addequette for the role. However the slightly obvious ways of getting themselves out of the problem of ghosts and skeletons were a bit frustrating. For example when Eddie Murphy and the girl were in the crypt the skeletons came after them. They say that the skeletons heads were easy to remove so why didn't they whack them. They had no special powers and didn't seem threatening in the slightest.l This film was fright free and even the younger kids in the cinema with me weren't in the slightest bit scared. The ending was a bit confusing and I felt it dragged on a bit. It is mainly a movie for the kids or maybe Roy croper out of Coronation street(a pathetic guy in a soap for people who aren't English), but not for anyone over the age of about 13.

Law & Order (1990– )
refreshingly different tv series
10 February 2004
It is so engaging to see programs that remain interesting and don't last for ages. I have only watched a few episodes but from what I have seen so far this looks like a class program. It is so much more realsitic than most programs and the dialogue and way that it is written is far more believable than alot of others!

Good Advice (2001)
I loved it
2 February 2004
I loved this film and thought it was absolutely hilarious! The comedy is well directed and the love affair between Angie Harmon(Page Henson) and Charlie Sheen(Ryan Turner) is unexpected and comes as a surprise. Denise Richards is at good at being bitchy and is hilarous as the money hungry bimbo. The script is smart and the supporting actors (Jon Lovitz and Rosanna Arquette) give the film a good touch. I would definately recommend it!

8 Mile (2002)
i enjoyed it
22 January 2004
I think that this was a great film and it kept me entertained throughout. I admit I was as much of a snob as anyone when I heard about Eminem being in a film and I thought it would suck. I think that this contained a great story line and the supporting cast of Mehki Phifer, Brittany Murphy and Kim Bassinger helped to boost this film in the right direction.

Lilo & Stitch (2002)
the best disney movie yet!
21 January 2004
Thank god that there is actuall someone down at disney who had the common sense to allow a new style of animated cartoon. Lilo and stitch is touching and beautifully created, and the water colour backdrops make it easy on the eye. It tells the story of Lilo and her older sister who adopt a small alien dog from the local kennels. Chris Sanders has made this film into a sentimental tale dealing with modern issues as well as creating comedy and a film great for kids and adults. It is so refreshing to see traditional surreal disney tales like beauty and the beast and the little mermaid, which are full of all singing all dancing hogwash, replaced by a beautiful piece od movie magic. Lilo and stitch is a charming and touching tale with perfectly casted voices and an ideal setting BRILLIANT!!!!! 10/10

28 Days (2000)
I loved it!!!
15 January 2004
I don't understand how the critics slated this film! This was one of the best films I had seen and Sandra Bullock was sensational in a different role than usual. She is naturaly the funniest actress around today and it is obvious by looking at this film. There supporting cast was also outstanding and helped make the film so good. Viggo Mortenson was funny(and it made a change not to see him in the boring LOTR films with less facial hair). Steve Buscemi was so natural in this role and it is quite interesting not to see him kill or be killed in an film. I found this hilarious and would definately recommend this to anyone who is in the mood for a good laugh!!!!!

A*!!!!

Kill Shot (1995 TV Movie)
Misleading DVD cover
13 January 2004
I was under the immpression that Denise would be in this film as a main character, but instead was in the film for about ten minutes as that guys girlfriend. The film turned out to be the typical American beach movie but with no real effort into making it any different. It could have been pretty good, but turned out pretty crap

Relic hunter is hilarious and tottally entertaining. The sexual frustration between sydney and nigel is hilarious and makes it very funny to watch. It may not be a multi million dollar program but it is definately worth seeing. I have spent over a hundred quid on relic hunter DVD's and i will buy more as they come out. top class entertainment!!!!!!!!!!!

wot the bloody hell was this!!!!!!
16 December 2003
This was shown on TV on Sunday and I don't really know why Everything about this film was just stupidly dialogued and with cheapo special effects. The control room with that annoying little "ay ay ay" robot was just so lazy it was beyond belief. The evil guys were stupid and the costumes were ridiculously over the top. Then theres that fat furby looking thing! How can anyone care for that thing! The actors that played the rangers themselves looked ridiculous talking to it in a soft voice and it made it hard to watch. I can't remember much about the series but i hope that it was no way as near as bad as this trash ridden piece of junk. What do you expect from a cheap hollywood script and untalented actors and an extremely low budget. Apart from that it does have one good thing about it. It makes any other film look like a master piece!!!!! (If you can't tell already, i hated it with a vengeance!!!!!!!!1

Elf (2003)
brilliantly funny and unique
11 December 2003
i admit that at first i thought boring and that this film would not be very good at all. But i stood corrected. I loved this film and it was so different to many hollywood productions. Will ferell was hilarious as ever and along with zoolander is probably his best performance. The jokes were hilarious and the comedy was written brilliantly. What seems like a typical feel good xmas film was actually nothing like any other christmasy film which will no doubt boost kids christmas spirit. Probably the best film ive seen at the cinema this year!

11 December 2003
i really enjoyed this and thought catherine zeta jones's performance and queen latifahs singing was exceptional. The whole cast was well chosen and the songs are extremely catchy and help to show the 1920's and 30's life of chicago but rennee, love, you need to eat more.

Harvard Man (2001)
zzzzzzzzzz
11 December 2003
the movie itself was boring and contained all the ingredients of a huge hollywood flop. The plot plodded along at a tediously slow pace and there were no really exciting moments in the film. There was certainly nothing new and the film contained cliched characters eg the gangster with a beautiful young daughter and the blonde teacher who everyone fancies. The love scenes were extremely unrealsitic and a bit stupid for the film. I still dont know how it ended and quite frankly i don't think many people would care!
