Captain America, we salute you
4 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Well there it is, the second wave. I'll start off by saying that the Cap is by far and away my favorite superhero. I had such high expectations, such high hopes for this film. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint. Not in the slightest. Also, it is without a shadow of a doubt better than Thor: The Dark World and Iron Man 3, the other fellow prologues to the upcoming The Avengers: Age of Ultron. Dare I say, on par with The Avengers and The Dark Knight?

Moving on, a bit about the film. We find our protagonist continuing to attempt to adapt to the modern world. Find his way, find things that he can relate to. He struggles, he continues to live in the past and constantly thinks about his war-mates, and about Peggy Carter, whom he meets up with and has a heart-wrenching moment with.

Steve is reminded that he cannot trust anyone, including SHIELD themselves. He must face a familiar foe, confront old friends, and with the help of the Black Widow and new friendly, Falcon, face countless enemies and countless friends turned foes.

If Captain America: The Winter Soldier is any indication of how the upcoming Avengers film will turn out to be, then sign me right up on the hype train. An absolute incredible, moving and inspiring film. Captain America: TWS gives us its take on "cape films", and sets an all new standard.

It does what it was meant to do
24 August 2012
Casa de mi Padre is not for everyone. There is a very limited audience for this movie, such as Spanish speaking folk, Will Ferrell fans. But the main one I think is the telenovela watching audience.

Casa de mi Padre is meant to poke fun at Mexican telenovelas, and it pretty much succeeded. The exaggerated acting, the exaggerated drama, weddings getting shot up, the hilarious mistakes that telenovelas usually do and the not so great pacing. This movie has it all, and it manages to exaggerate even MORE on top of that. Typical Ferrell style.

The film also has a great Hispanic cast to boot. Diego Luna, Pedro Armendariz, Gael Garcia, Genesis Rodriguez and more. And of course, Will Ferrell speaking Spanish the whole film. He does an excellent job at it.

All in all this movie is hilarious. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and if you liked what you read just now you will most likely enjoy it too.

Absolutely fantastic.

Warning: Spoilers
First Class is bar none the best X-Men movie. There is no arguing. In First Class, the viewer finds out exactly how and why the X-Men came to be in the first place. How Magneto came to be. Everyone loves a little back story right?

There are a few things that separate this film from the others of its kind. First and most importantly, it's the character relationships. The character relationships built in this movie is second to none. Seriously. I'm talking specifically about Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr. It's something that you would have to see for yourself. There really aren't that many films with that kind of chemistry. Not love of course, but just their "brotherly" love. And that's just two characters. You also got Xavier and Mystique. Erik and Mystique. Come to think of it, Mystique is probably the one with most connections.

There are also scene sequences that will leave you with your jaw on the floor or make you go "holy sh-". The submarine and anchor scene. The submarine in mid-air scene. The coin through head scene. When Xavier gets shot. The missiles going back and forth. The contained explosion going down a certain someones throat. Also, who could forget the the little Wolverine cameo? And much, much more.

I don't know. It's something any person would have to experience. The film manages to mesh the X-Men with the supposed imminent start of WWIII flawlessly. The audience builds a strong relationship with the characters in the movie.. It's just.. great. This movie hits the bullseye in every category there is. Definitely one of my favorites.

Disappointing.

Warning: Spoilers
I guess this is what happens when expectations are this high. You are easily exposed to a let down, and that's what The Dark Knight Rises is.

There are many things wrong with this film. Many mistakes that a high tier director like Nolan should never make. And there are those scenes where they just make you go "what..?"

Gordon letting EVERY SINGLE COP go inside the sewers. Why, just why did he do that? Why did Nolan give that a go? I know cops and their superiors aren't like masterminds, but in what world is this a good idea? And don't get me started on the cops vs bad guys scene. That was terrible to watch. Nolan was trying to hard to make it epic that it ended up being pretentious.

How about Bruce Wayne being an absolute idiot and being out of character in some parts? I know the ladies is like his kryptonite, but it's ridiculous. He was basically weeping for the first 25 minutes of the movie, still 8 years after the "love of his life" died. But that's OK, all he needed was a wet Talia from the rain to make him forget about her, at least for the rest of the movie.

That's not even that bad. No, not even close. Selina Kyle, portrayed by the lovely Anne Hathaway makes him a full on idiot, fool, whatever you want to call it. This girl kicks his cane and makes him fall, steals his mother's jewelry, steals his car etc. That's OK though, he thinks it's cute. What about when she betrays him and throws him into the pit with Bane? You know, where Bane proceeds to absolutely throttle him? Nah, that's fine too. Here's something to start off fresh. Again, out of character.

There is more that that believe it or not. Like the return to Gotham from "hell on earth", the super chiropractor that miraculously fixes Wayne's back without fail or any sweat, Gordon walking around Gotham and the goons not spotting him, Batman appearing very little, and more.

That being said, the movie also has its upsides. Bane being one of them. He is menacing, he is scary, and he is a great villain. Seriously a contender for best villain of the trilogy. I hated how he went though. Terrible way to do away with him. I loved Liam Neeson's little cameo as Ra's Al Ghul. I loved the whole Bane lore and how he came to be. And the action sequences were pretty top notch. The ending was lovely as well.

All in all, it was a decent movie. Could of been so much more. It obviously shot for "masterpiece" status, but fell short.

Great movie.

It's Liam Neeson. That's all I needed in order for this movie to call my attention. It's gritty. It's dark. It's fantastic.

Neeson plays Ottway, a loner and self reserved type. He hunts animals for a living, namely Wolves. Fast forward a bit, he and a few dozen others get on a plane leaving to Alaska. Needless to say, the plane goes down (in one of the greatest plane going down scenes ever) and crash lands in a remote area in Alaska. This is where it all starts. Man vs Wolf. Life vs Death.

The events that transpire throughout the whole movie is bone chilling and nerve wrecking. I won't say much. But you'll find yourself wondering, pondering, and just thinking deep thoughts about life and how to live it. Especially towards the end. This movie really opened my eyes, and really hit me in many ways. If you accept this movie for what it is, you'll more than likely feel the same.

It's good, but something is missing.
8 July 2012
I'll be honest, I thought this movie would bomb. Box office, critics and bomb in my eyes as well. I was wrong. I won't say much, just the basics.

Let me just start off by saying that Andrew Garfield blew me away. I didn't expect much from this guy, only ever seeing him in The Social Network, but he did his part and did it well. In Raimi's Spiderman, Peter Parker is a full on nerd. But in this particular one, he's more of a skater / just plain awkward type. But he made it work. As for Emma Stone, she was flawless. (I might be bias here, for obvious reasons.)

As for the Villain, Rhys Ifans plays a magnificent Lizard. By far the best Villain of any Spider-Man movie interpretation. I always thought this was Spider-Man movies weakest point (sans Venom, he's awesome but was just portrayed and used terribly) but in TASM I loved every bit of screen time that the Lizard got.

Yet, there is something missing. Something I cannot put my finger on... maybe it's just me and my mind trying to connect this and Raimi's Spider-Man and over-comparing the two, I'm not sure. One thing is for certain, and I'm sure most of you hated it too: The infamous crane scene. My word...

All in all, it's a great movie too watch. Full of action, some instances of comedy, and of course, Spider-Man!

The Avengers (2012)

Everything I hoped for.
4 May 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Just came back from watching it... my oh my this movie is incredible. Joss Whedon really put together a masterpiece. Perfect combination of action and comedy and even heartfelt moments. This movie right here is years of build up. Years of anticipation. And after 5 movies, it's finally here. And it is perfect.

I'm not going to say much, I will just list the main characters as reference for the fans of each.

Bruce Banner/Hulk: Hulk stole the show. From the minute he appeared till the end he had me at the edge of my seat. The amount of awesome cannot be explained.. Stark was right. Loki's army wasn't anything compared to The Hulk. He definitely deserves more that what he's gotten with the movie "The Incredible Hulk." Some sort of reboot perhaps?

Iron Man: Typical Stark that everyone loves. The life of the party. Witty, snarky, smart, hilarious. But he was also motivated. So motivated in fact, that he risked his life at one point of the movie. Class.

Captain America: They really succeeded in meshing Rogers in. He once again shows his fighting spirit and leadership skills. And that shield! Might as well be considered a superhero with that shield in his hands. Rogers knew that he was overshadowed by the raw power from some of the Avengers, but he didn't care. He just did his job, to protect society. You'll never find a better guy than this.

Thor: The other powerhouse besides Hulk. For some reason I thought Thor would be somewhat irrelevant, and I don't know why. I was wrong. Thor showed compassion on many occasions. His motive was simple, yet moving. He really brushed aside the fact that he is a God amongst men (for the most part) and genuinely wanted to be a part of the Avengers.

Widow & Hawkeye: Most people brushed aside these two as irrelevant. These two are human beings and nothing more. I guess that's what makes them so special. Two human beings, Widow with her world class fighting skills and Hawkeye with his master archery, take on an entire alien race to save humanity. They'll do anything in their power to help. That in its own is something to respect.

Loki: The sneaky, cunning Loki. Equipped with the tesseract and a smile that will make you tremble in fear, he is the Avengers main enemy. Tom Hiddleston plays him flawlessly.

All in all, this movie was amazing. I honestly want to spend another $11 to see it again. A genuine contender for best superhero movie, ever. For those of you who haven't seen it, see it now. You will not regret it.

amazing.
15 November 2011
Let me start off by saying that the first time I saw it, I was disappointed. I expected much more action and all that, since it IS a superhero movie.

But after seeing it a few more times, I have come to absolutely adore this movie. Captain America: TFA doesn't try to be as action packed as Iron Man. It's just.. different. It's one man who sincerely and wholeheartedly wants to fight for his country and serve his nation. He will stop at nothing to get into the army to do so.

Chris Evans does an excellent job at playing Cpt. Steve Rogers and the rest of the cast does their part extremely well too. Not everything is perfect though, they really could of done a better job at the whole "mini" Steve Rogers... he just looks silly. Also they really could of made the Red Skull more... cooler I guess. In terms of power. Other than that, this movie is top notch fun.

I cannot wait to see him return in The Avengers!
