Hyeomnyeo: Kar-ui gi-eok (2015)
A poem, not a story
"Memories" seems to be a key word with this film, as memories are not always complete. Just as memories, so too poetry. A poem doesn't need complete sentences to be understood, it's more about the feelings that are conveyed. When I came to this realization, I enjoyed this film much more.
I guess the advertising for this film made comparisons to Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon? I don't know because I just borrowed this from the library & it wasn't until a couple reviews mentioned it that I heard the comparison. There are similarities, but that is all they are..
Don't focus on that for this film, enjoy it for what it is: a poem in cinematic form.
A Sound of Thunder (2005)
It was almost okay.
I just rented this movie thinking that I liked the concept. Which I still do, but A Sound Of Thunder really let me down. I was expecting a movie that (especially after the line "It's bulletproof" when talking about their time traveling and how well they have things figured out) shows a humanity which has perfected time travel. I didn't know what to expect concerning the dinosaur hunting, so when they presented the idea that they kill the dinosaurs they knew were going to die in a matter of minutes anyway, I thought this movie was on to something.
Oh yes, the green screen. To imitate Chandler "Could it BE anymore obvious?!" There was that one scene that was just so ridiculous, I couldn't believe this movie was made in 2005! How hard can it be to get two people to take a walk on a set? How hard was it to build a set? Was there enough funding for this movie? They actually had Edward Burns and uh... the woman. Was it the lady who invented the AI? Anyway, they're just walking along and it is incredibly obvious that they just have green screen behind them and they're on a treadmill or whatever they may be using.
And then when they do go and hunt the dinosaurs, there's so much green screen, I don't think there were many sets involved, and even the ones that were involved were probably basic and the rest was green screen. I feel ripped off by this movie because with all we can do with technology these days, this movie really didn't do the best it could have done.
You might be saying "Well a lot of movie are CGI, what are you complaining about?" Yes they are, but they're also smoothed over so that (for the most part) you can't tell there's a green screen behind, in front of, or beside the actors. If this was all because the movie was under funded... then I could understand. I don't know if that's the case or not. Sigh.
Unleashed (2005)
Hard not to love
If you like either Jet Li, Morgan Freeman, Luc Besson, or a touching story with kick-ass fighting scenes, this is the movie for you.
Comparable to Equilibrium, this movie is definitely one that I will buy. The characters are believable and have depth to them. Very enjoyable and a decent length too.
The movie starts off simply enough, but then as it continues, and more background is presented, the movie gets really good and the viewer will find themselves (or I at least did) at the edge of their seat wanting more and more.
Jet Li definitely delivers like he hasn't before, and brings quality work to the movie. This movie also brought Bob Hoshins into a new light for me. I never imagined him as someone who could be cruel, ruthless and greedy. He does a very good job in making his character believable. He's not just ruthless, but he also has a kind side to him, even if you see it briefly. My grade for this film is an A++
