Blue Bayou (2021)
Fails in the End
I'll cut to the chase. The film is entertaining to watch but the countless plot holes and unrealistic situations makes the story a dud. It seems Justin Chon did not do enough research into the subject matter the film is based on.
Kid 90 (2021)
Kid Soleil
The film in it's entirely is not bad. Hence the 6/10 I gave it. Like others have commented, although there is a lot of archival footage of other 90s actors and the viewer gets a sense of what it was like to grow up in 90s Hollywood, make no mistake, this film is about Soleil Moon Frye. One major criticism I can give is that at times it seems like the film is just one big pity party, with Soleil repeatedly airing her grievances about how she is unhappy with the way her career (or lack thereof) turned out post Punk Brewster, and how various men wanted to have sex with her when she was a teenager. Almost MeToo-ish. I thought it was a bit classless on her part to reveal that Charlie Sheen was the one that took her virginity without exactly spelling it out for the audience. It's worth watching but the film is probably not what you are expecting it would have been.
The Double (2013)
Not Watchable
This may be one of the very few films that I had to walk away from within the first five minutes. I knew it was directed by Richard Ayoade, who's film Submarine I really enjoyed and I thought was funny as an actor in The Watch. That's primarily why I gave it a go. It may be that I'm just not familiar with Dostoyevsky's work but the film just doesn't work from the start. By the way the wacky characters are introduced I felt like Ayoade was attempting to create some kind of mash up between Wes Anderson and David Lynch's style of directing. I also must admit that Jesse Eisenberg can be very flat as an actor and that could have played a role in why I didn't want to root for his character
Premium Rush (2012)
Not What I Was Expecting
Premium Rush is one of those films that you would take someone in the 12- 14 age group to go see when you have nothing to do. From the bicycle tricks to the classic Asian villains, it's an action film that has just enough substance to keep your attention, but not much else
Here is what has me disappointed : If you consider yourself a casual film buff, then you know who David Koepp is. This is the guy who wrote such great screenplays like Carlito's Way, Panic Room, and Jurassic Park. So going in, you think you are going to be watch something that is at least half as good as those films. Not happening. Again, Premium Rush is a film to watch if you're looking for 90 minutes of mindless entertainment but don't expect to experience anything like what David Koepp has written in the past
Behind the Orange Curtain (2012)
Educational but not entirely accurate
Behind the Orange Curtain is a film based mostly on parents who have lost their children to prescription drugs. Although it is informative and somewhat entertaining, I believe the filmmakers missed several opportunities to depict a more accurate portrayal of the subject matter Most of the families who are interviewed are from Newport Beach, which is the most wealthy part of Orange County. It represents less than 1% of the population of Orange County. I believe the filmmakers choice to only cover those who are wealthy and have lost children to prescription drugs was a huge disservice to the viewer. Perhaps the title of the film should be changed to Behind the Newport Facade Very little emphasis is put on the actual drug users themselves, the doctors that prescribe them, or the drug dealers that sell them The worst part of the film was that the filmmakers attempt to inject their own ideology by claiming that smoking marijuana leads to the abuse of harder drugs and prescription medication
Drive (2011)
Worst Film of 2011
I agree with many others that Drive was not only the worst film of 2011, but a total scam. I have no idea how this film got an 8.0 rating. I gave it a 3. I could go and on about every little thing that made this film suck, but what made it horrible was the amount of grossly inaccurate portrayals of the characters and cheesy action scenes. It starts off from the start - nobody gets away in a car chase in Los Angeles! What were they thinking? The characters - OK, so there's a guy who is a stunt driver by day, but also works as a mechanic, and has a third job that consists of driving people to robberies. Very realistic, ha! Not to mention that he makes all this money but lives in a crappy apartment in Echo Park?!? The worst part about the film is the main character's outer and inner motivations. He is going to risk his own life all so he can save the family of the woman he's just met! How about that scene at the end where he strategically runs into the villain's car, flips it over the cliff, and then drowns the man in the ocean! lol!!! This is worse than the action flicks of the 80s!!! Don't waste your time on this film
