31 (2016)
Unlikeability mistaken for grittiness
Many writers fancy themselves the new Tarantino, try to write gritty characters, and end up with unlikable assholes.
If you don't feel sympathy for any of the characters, horror movies are just boring.
Cloak & Dagger (2018)
Things you can't do with a straight face without being pretentious
If you like watching a group of unlikable people being generally miserable all the time, and be bored out of your mind, this is the show for you.
The only positive thing is that nothing actually happens most of the time (not that it follows any logic when it does), so it's the perfect show to put on the background if you've got something else to do and prefer a gloomy atmosphere.
Steven Universe (2013)
Mentally challenged teen tries his best to stave off interplanetary war
With an interesting concept and an innovative, open minded perspective on gender roles, Steven Universe as a series showed much promise, sustained in the early episodes by a strong cast of interesting characters. However, by season 3 the series' themes are laid out, and each episode, as well as the show at large, become increasingly predictable, while characters start more and more to follow the plot, rather than the plot following the characters. The protagonist's initially sensitive and selfless personality, if somewhat developmentally challenged (he's a teen acting like an 8 to 10 y.o.) soon devolves in a caricature of itself, becoming increasingly self-righteous and irrational. By the later season four, the show is a nearly unwatchable shadow of itself.
Gorugo 13 (1983)
Way overrated (and I mean WAY)
Having never read the original series, I'll have to go with what's in the movie. Golgo 13 is slow, pretentious and predictable to the point of boredom. Every single character is an off-the-mark stereotype and every single situation is a worn-out trope you've seen in either a 007 or Dirty Harry movie, making the movie a simple collage of scenes you might have liked from other movies (kinda like the recent "Jupiter Ascending"). Throughout the movie, events keep happening "just because", without any regard to personality or logic, and that emphasize even more the "patchwork" aspect of the movie. The movie's only redeeming quality is the visual impact, but the slow pans and masterful lighting effects are overplayed to the point of exhaustion, and do nothing to improve the movie's terrible pacing (though it gets somewhat better). Sometimes in manga the main character is intentionally made shallow and only marginally interesting, to bring out the secondary characters and help the writer focus on their own story (see Hokuto No Ken), however the device here fails miserably, because every single character is just as shallow, often possessing a single character trait. All in all, one of the worst anime I've ever seen: this movie has nothing to offer you.
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
Finally a decent Star Wars movie
Not quite what it was hyped to be (it was virtually impossible), but a decent movie nonetheless. It's basically a remix of elements from the classic saga, and with 3 movies worth of original material it feels a bit rushed, with each plot point resolving a bit too quickly and simplistically in order to make room for the next. It's basically the Jurassic World of Star Wars: identical plot and faster, larger everything. The best feature of the movie is that it does what everyone else should and pretends the prequels don't exist (it's also better for the plot to pretend that humanoid life span is longer and memory shorter). You think JJ's Star Trek relied too heavily on coincidence? Man you're in for a roller coaster of "what are the odds". Items and characters improbably converge from every corner of the galaxy with convenient timing. -DO NOT FEAR SPOILERS- Any plot twist spoils itself with blaring use of red flags anyway. NOTHING in this movie will surprise you. The only real spoiler of the movie: Kylo Ren is a wimp. Possibly the weakest Force User ever seen in the Star Wars Saga (the prequels feature younglings, but we're pretending they didn't happen) despite the movie spending the firs part hyping him up. Mark Hamill, for a voice actor, can surely say A LOT with his eyes.
Terminator Genisys (2015)
Not a bad movie after all
I have been hesitant to watch this because the quality of the franchise started falling right after the first, and Genisys was immediately met with bad press. I was wrong. It's not a bad movie at all, and not just that: it's actually the only movie in the franchise that makes sense as a sequel of the original (though Judgement day was a better movie). In fact, someone who isn't familiar with The Terminator can just watch the first and this one. The plot got simply rid of any continuity issues by just straight up kicking out the concept of continuity. Not only as a solution it's quick and effective, it's also perfectly justified by the simple fact that there are people freaking jumping in and out of time machines and messing everything up. The John Connor character actually gives a very effective explanation of this (by accident) in one of his monologues (he really talks too much). The movie is quick, rather funny and action-packed. The cast is convincing and the effects are, well, today's effects (except for the helicopter chase. That thing was fake as hell). Someone decent at video editing could easily repack it into 90 awesome minutes by removing the cringe-worthy moments and irrelevant plot points (some out of place attempts at humor, Reese's double memories and kid Reese, some of the clumsiest romantic bits), but even as it stands now it's really not bad.
Ash vs Evil Dead (2015)
Still hopeful
The first episode was... not bad. It had some great moments, but it felt somewhat artificial. The acting is a bit stiff, and timing in the dialogue is kinda limpy, you can tell that they're waiting their turn to say their lines, which are sometimes delivered very flatly (especially true for Ray Santiago, but no one is completely innocent here). You can also usually tell when a line is only written as an assist for another actor as it's being delivered, and that's awful. Another thing I noticed is that soundtrack and camera movement sometimes fail to emphasize the action, which is weird because Raimi had that s*** covered decades ago. Also the cable stunts are just downright clumsy (when aren't they?). There are also way too many characters for a 30 minutes episode, so you end up not really caring about most of them, and the story becomes fragmented. The good thing is, it's just the first episode. The actors will surely get more and more used to each other and develop a (much needed) chemistry. The rest is up to the writers and directors. The effects are cool and gory, the humor is there (mostly), there's lots of fanservice and Damien Garvey absolutely kills it as the "asshole" boss (he's right though). Can't think of anything else right now, I guess we'll see.
Hollow Point (1996)
Thoroughly enjoyable and without pretense
Very likely the best action b-movie out there. It's fast, funny and never pretentious. Sutherland and Lithgow are at their best, and the meth-head vigilante Max Parrish is a truly unique character. You could not make a movie like this today. Apparently the cast just flat-out refused to take themselves seriously for even a minute, and you can see they are really having fun filming it. The dialogue is pretty poor in the more "serious" scenes, but not much worse than any big action blockbuster. I don't want to hype it up too much. It's a nice movie, just go watch it. I'm all out to things to say without adding spoilers, but I need an additional line to post, and here it is.
