The One Where Underdog Gets Away... while Ross tries to sing for his son...
26 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
_____FRIENDS (1994)_____

-----Season One. Episode Nine.-----

The One Where Underdog Gets Away...while Ross tries to sing for his son...

An interesting plot where everybody gets his initial plans spoiled and they have to make do however they can.

While Ross is trying to sing to his son, jealous of his ex-wife´s new mate, while he is still in his mother´s belly, the gang is trying to prepare a Thanksgiving reunion with exception of Rachel who is going to take a plane. With exception of Chandler, all of them have big expectations for the day; Monica prepares three different kinds of potatoes according to the group´s requests, Joey just got happy he appears in health ads all over the town but he repents afterwards and before everything starts, they get up to the top of the building to see a giant balloon of "Underdog" that happens to be magically levitating over the city...a show no one could resist...or at least no one from this happily slightly childish group of FRIENDS!

To have gone to the roof to see the giant Underdog´s balloon will change everything for the gang...for better or worse; let´s hope it´s for better !!!!!

BraveStarr (1987–1989)

------The Adventures of the Marshal of planet New Texas-----
23 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
-------BraveStarr. 1987 Cartoon Series-------

Being the one in charge of keeping the order in a small planet called New Texas where everyone was used to defend (or not to defend) himself against bandits and aggression and being extremely outnumbered, BraveStarr was maybe the hero from "Filmation Associates" who more often felt alone. Unlike the previous cartoons of He-Man and She-ra where there where a couple of dozens of heroes to choose from, here we have only a very small group of them. Nevertheless the most interesting part of this cartoon in my opinion is how interesting influenced it was by the Shamanic cultures of the South East part of the United States of America and North regions of Mexico. While most of the inspiration for other cartoons came from the Middle Ages of Europe or Asia, BraveStarr was inspired in traditions and fauna from our American Continent and gave us a hero who could use powers of "Spirit Animals": Eyes of a Hawk-----Strength of a Bear-----Ears of a Wolf-----Speed of a Puma. I want to state clear that I don´t find one tradition inherently more interesting that another; for me, an interesting concept or tale can come the same from the Lakes of China, the Geisers of Wyoming or the Mountains of Himalaya, but seeing that a series made the effort of showing us concepts and images that are not easily found in other sources is always very, very, appreciated.

Silent Möbius: A dark, mysterious anime!
23 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
SILENT MÖBIUS (SAIRENTO MEBIUSU) 1998 ANIME SERIES.

SILENT MÖBIUS: A DARK, MYSTERIOUS ANIME!

Full of silence, and yet very noisy when it must, a singular and interesting anime that took us to a slightly distant future (we are, in theory, only five more years away right now) where the world had changed completely due to both advances in technology and in sorcery arts. A city where saying that its nights were black and dark was for sure not a pleonasm. Heavily influenced by movies like "Blade Runner" and creating and atmosphere where conflicts with extra-dimensional beings was the core of the plot kept the episodes in constant suspense. As an extra, most episodes in my opinion can be seen individually, even when, of course, you can´t understand everything if you are completely new to the series and you see an advanced episode, most of them have interesting sub-plots inside the main story, this sub-plots, are, in my opinion, the best part of this controversial anime series.

-----The Spider Slayer-----
20 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
-----Spider-Man. TV Series.-----

-----The Spider Slayer.-----

Spencer Smythe is a scientist that has been hired by Norman Oscorn to produce means to attack Spider-Man. Kingpin, the boss of crime in New York and who pretends to be a ruler of crime worldwide finds that he can´t really control even his own city because of the crime-fighting activities of SPIDER-MAN. Smythe initially sends a group of flying objects to attack Spider-Man not as a definitive attack but as a test of Spider-Man´s abilities. He is preparing a robot called "The BLACK WIDOW" to attack Spider-Man, but first they are planning to expose him.

On his side, good old Pete (the guy who is Spider-Man when he is not web-slinging, web-shooting and wall-crawling) has just being hired to take the pictures at a charity ball, where he is also a guest. During the ball, his long time school nemesis, Flash Thompson, wears a Spider-Man costume to try to be an annoyance for Pete, telling him he does not like the pictures he takes. Pete, of course knows he is an impostor, but plays along.

During the ball, the Black Widow of Kingpin, Osborn and Smythe appears and attacks Spider-Man, and after a more or less long fight when half the dance floor is already destroyed and filled with debris, the Black Widow leaves with an unconscious Spider-Man to the villains´ headquarters, ready to unmask him...

------- ------- -------

With "The Spider Slayer" we have the typical episode where good times are always short and bad times are always long for Spider-Man, his devotion for his Aunt May is always interesting same as the easiness with which the Spider-costume seems to attract trouble, something that F.T. discovered during the episode.

One of the saddest parts of the story is that first Flash Thompson and then the Spider Slayer, the Black Widow robot, appeared when things seemed to be working for Pete and Felicia Hardy, but that is not the only sad story in the episode; the story of the Smythes is always one very full of tragedy.

The ORIGIN EPISODE for FIRESTAR.
16 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
-------Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends-------

Season 2. Episode 3.

A FIRESTAR IS BORN.

The ORIGIN EPISODE for FIRESTAR.

After having had an ORIGIN episode for ICEMAN and one for SPIDER-MAN, now we have the episode that shows us the origin of FIRESTAR. From a certain point of view, her origin is no different to the ones of other members of the X-MEN, she had a slightly tormented childhood and puberty, but in her case, it maybe had much more to do with her wanting to hang out with the wrong people, namely, people who didn´t like her back (like her nemesis, a more or less rich and spoiled girl named Bonnie) that with having too much difficulty trying to control her powers, even when as pretty much all X-Men, she had to suffer one or two small accidents while she was growing up.

Now, from another point of view, her origin is pretty unique, because she was created specifically for this TV show. They wanted Spidey to have partners that had powers of both FIRE and ICE, so they made him team-up with ICEMAN, one of the most popular X-MEN from the comics and invented FIRESTAR, giving her an X-Men background too.

This was also good because the ORIGIN episode for FIRESTAR, worked too as a PRESENTATION episode for many of the X-Men, because even when many of them where mentioned before, we only saw them really in action till this episode. In the same order of ideas, this episode also presented MARKO or JUGGERNAUT, one of the deadliest enemies of the X-MEN when he goes to fight against them during their reunion.

Angelica? well, over the years she appeared in the comics too, first as a member of a group of heroes called Hellions, then the New Warriors, then the Avengers, etc, etc, etc,... but if you ask me the most important about her character is her participation in series like MAXIMUM CARNAGE, where she remains as one of the most important allies and friends of SPIDER-MAN, even when, in theory, the team called the SPIDER-FRIENDS (Spider-Man, IceMan, FireStar) never occurred as such in the comic.

THANKS FOR READING.

Super Friends: The Planet of Oz (1979)
Season 4, Episode 8
MXTPLX and the Planet of Oz
14 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
______The World´s Greatest SuperFriends_____ Season One. Episode EIGHT.

------The Planet of Oz-----

MXTPLX and the Planet of Oz:

With "The Planet of Oz" we had one of the most memorable episodes of the old 70's and 80´s Superfriends where the villain MXTPLX transports three of them; Superman, Wonder Woman and Aquaman to the "The Planet of Oz" in order to make them get the necessary ingredients for a special formula during this story inspired in the old 1900´s "The Magical Wizard of Oz" novel by Frank Baum and W. W. Denslow.

MXTPLX: A small individual with God-like powers and that somehow finds entertaining to use his abilities to get Superman and the Superfriends in general into trouble even when 99% of the time it does not even represent a benefit for him (this episode is actually the exception to the rule). An interesting thing about him is that he cannot be beaten by strength, but always by cunning; by making him say his strange name backwards which turns him back to that 5th dimension he says he comes from; that is the reason why he wants the formula for in this episode; to become immune to the effect of saying his name backwards...

A very nice episode and sadly the last one of this particular series of the Superfriends. Everybody has his personal taste, but chances are that if you like the Superfriends, at least one of your favorite episodes comes from "The World´s Greatest Superfriends", which had between its peculiarities a slightly different order of presenting the heroes at the start of every show and to have paid a deserved tribute to some classics of literature.

Oldie but Goodie!
13 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
IRON MAN (1966 TV Series) Episode One.

DOUBLE DISASTER// ENTER HAPPY HOGAN//OF ICE AND MEN// Yes, it is that long, every single segment had a title of its own.

OLDIE BUT GOODIE!

Nearly 52 years ago, this animated series whose drawings had scarce movements but in compensation had interesting music and sound effects and half gave the sensation of being hearing a story on the radio; this series and their homologous shows of THOR and CAPTAIN AMERICA, were much closer to be comics with some small movements that they were of being normal cartoons, but as I said maybe that gave a small special flavor to the stories (and I suppose they were cheaper for the people involved to produce).

We get to know "Happy" Hogan, Pepper Potts and of course Tony Stark, the three most important characters of this series that also half resembles the old stories about espionage of those years; or more precisely IS one of the those old stories about espionage of those years combined with the elements proper of the sub-genre of Superheroes and Superheroines. Tony is an industrialist, inventor and sportsman and the one who also is secretly his own bodyguard, the Superhero known as IRON MAN. Happy is a good guy that saves T. Stark´s life after a problem he has during a race and becomes his right hand and best friend. Pepper is a lady that Happy immediately starts falling for, but she has maybe already been falling for Mr. Stark for some time by the time she meets Happy.

Something else, as many of the most important characters co-created by Stan Lee, Iron Man/Tony S. has an important weak spot: he has some sort of malfunction in his heart and needs his technology to prevent him from dying at all times.

A Good Old Detective Episode; GIVE IT A TRY!!!
12 February 2018
Batman. The Animated Series (1992) Season 1. Seventh episode in order of production, 13th in order of appearance.

-------P. O. V. (Point of View)-------

_______A Good Old Detective Episode; GIVE IT A TRY!!!

Seeing that this episode has an average score of 6.6 among the users, in my opinion just means that they don´t remember the episode or that most users that voted don´t like detective stories much, which is completely fine; everyone has the right to have his own taste; nevertheless, I sincerely think that all Batman viewers, either if they consider themselves fans of the Dark Knight or not, should give a second SLOWER TRY to this episode and let its detective plot have the time to catch them within the story at hand.

Unlike other episodes where we are given the necessary elements to know what happened right from the start, in this case we have to listen to what each one of the parts has to say about it and reconstruct the case; we find ourselves listening to three different stories about what happened.

...And even when the complete truth maybe will never be revealed as at least one of the three implicated seems not to want it to be really known, let´s hope everything will work out all right in the story with the info at hand...

A good old detective story of the Batman and one that, in my humble opinion, deserves a much higher average score; I understand that not all of us like the same kind of stories; maybe my 9 is too high, but I want to think that, even if you are among those who normally prefer more spectacular and dynamic stories, this episode should be given a chance to rank among your favorite ones from season one, or at least, get a slightly higher score...how about an 8?

Anyway, there are many good detective stories in the BATMAN screen versions, but given that this was one of the first episodes of being produced in this series, I think it also deserves the credit of having helped to establish the 1992´s BATMAN as the most interesting cartoon about the character.

-----BATMAN ANIMATED------

-------Eternal Youth.-------

We begin with Poison Ivy pursuing a woman whose company damaged an entire ecosystem and attacking her with her toxins, transforming her more or less into a living statue (unlike, for example, Catwoman, who is an anti-villain or even an anti-heroine that has among her virtues a sincere and mostly responsible concern for ecology, Poison Ivy is an ecological terrorist that seems to always overlook that humans are also part of the planet...)

Later at Wayne Manor, we see Bruce very upset as his company almost made a deal that would have destroyed another ecosystem if Alfred and him hadn´t taken action to stop it. Alfred, tells Bruce/BATMAN that nothing will really ever slip by him, while he (Alfred) is in charge of helping him. Then, Alfred and Bruce watch a video that just arrived from an enterprise by the name "Eternal Youth" that is secretly ruled by Poison Ivy...

After watching the full video, Bruce and Maggie will convince Alfred that Maggie and him should give a try to a weekend at the Spa in the cassette...ups...

Panthro and Cheetara decide to give to the kittens Wilykat and Wilykit some survival lessons and teach them hunting. At the beginning, it seems like the kids lack the necessary willpower to hunt, but a retrospective view reveals that their failure to capture animals for food comes not from lack of ability or determination but from compassion as they have both have had very difficult lives, and even when they don´t reveal their true story and abilities to the adults, they will for sure surprise them.

Fighting in an unarmed combat inside the Book of Omens, Lion-0 takes the lead on Mumm-ra, seeing himself nearly defeated, Mumm-ra asks to the Ancient Spirits of Evil to send him the most evil force ever. The Ancient Spirits invoke a champion from the cauldron in order to defeat Lion-0. Lion-0 will have to defeat this new champion and get the Key of Thundera back in order to save his friends and New Thundera.

With this episode we said good-bye to the epic 80´s Thundercats, starring a Lion-O that never surrendered to the forces of evil no matter how many opponents were presented by the Ancient Spirits of Evil and all the Thundercats, old and new fighting for New Thundera. We also saw the regeneration of the planet due the power of the Key of Thundera and an ecological message in the final segment of this last episode.

Ewoks. TV Series.

The Curse of the Jindas.

----"Your power is strong with the forest creatures. Remember that"---

One of my favorite episodes of the old Ewoks cartoon. It tells us the story of the Jindas and how they got a curse that impedes them to stay in one place for long. If they stay for too long, terrible rocks that chase them appear. After they make a favor to the Ewoks, they will try to help them get rid of the curse as a gesture of gratitude.

For starters, they will try to immobilize the rocks that haunt them, and for that the Wizard of their tribe and Teebo, will summon some animals of the wilderness around them, and before using their powers, Master Logray advises his young apprentice with some words that so remind us that we are at the same time in the STAR WARS Universe and in a story more or less independent to the ones we know, as even when the Ewoks are inextricably linked to the first Star Wars trilogy because they help Han and Leia in Episode 6, this is their own set of adventures:

-------"Your power is strong with the forest creatures. Remember that----

and we see Master Logray and Teebo asking with their magic to those forest creatures to create a net of vines around the stones to keep them from moving...

...that will buy them some time to reverse the curse!

Either if we are talking about the original 80´s version or the 2011 remake, the Thundercats are an important part of our pop culture and a very rich set of stories that takes us from Eastern tales to the Ancient Egyptian Culture and from the Outer Space to faraway dimensions.

Maybe Not The Best X-Men Episode Of ALL, But...
26 January 2018
___X-Men (1992 TV Series)____ ____X-Ternally Yours (1993 Episode)___

MAYBE NOT THE BEST X-MEN EPISODE OF ALL, BUT... _______ _______ _______

A lot can be said and a lot of different kind of plots are found within the X-Men adventures, from Detective plots to Outer Space to Time Travel to just another tale of someone defining who he is. X-Ternally yours not only makes reference to the character of the X-Ternal; being very similar to the way in which many people finish a letter in English language results very appropriate to be partially an ORIGIN episode for one of the most elegant X-Men as it is an elegant title (IMO). Talking about my favorite X-Men, Cyclops and Jean Grey (or Scott and Jean) are normally my favorite but focusing in the character whose origin is partially depicted in this episode, I share with many other fans that this character potentially became one of my favorite X-Men almost within the first five or ten minutes of watching the TV or reading a comic with him included (in this case it was in the TV show), and he has remained in my TOP TEN since. With a lot of style within his dialogues and if you add that somehow his heart always seems to be broken for one reason or another, you have a character that can participate in many different kinds of plots.

Talking about the episode, everyone has his favorite, but, besides being a really good episode I think it is a good story to show to someone new to the series as it has a story that initiates and concludes within that single chapter and it is a good example of how complex and interesting the X-Men plots can be...And talking about the leading character of this episode we just spoke...you already know who he is. Right?

Warning: Spoilers
Spider-Woman. TV Series. Season 1. Episode 16. -------A DEADLY DREAM.-------

Good Night, Spider-Woman.

Another Sci-Fi plot. The army finds out an old spaceship, and inside of it the frozen body of an armored woman. The woman and the piece of ice where she is, are made to be cared of by a man who turns up the heater only because he feels cold , thus, releasing the woman from her prison, as they had made really no special arrangements to properly keep the finding as setting a special recipient . This point could be a plot hole or a subtle social critic of some kind, I prefer to think it is the second one. Once the woman is released, she uses some kind of beam from her eyes to make people sleep and make them her prisoners in the dream world.

We will have an episode with Spider-Woman fighting this entity both in the physical and the dream-world until she finally defeats her being maybe the most interesting part of the episode its final scene and line:

+++++++ Jessica wakes up in the Justice Magazine´s hybrid helicopter, and after a small talk with Jeff, she looks towards you and says:

---GOOD NIGHT, SPIDER-WOMAN----

Then she closes an eye for you and the episode finishes.+++++++

It doesn´t make much sense unless you know that this, the 16th episode, is the final one, by saying --"Good night, Spider-Woman"--, she is saying good bye to the series and her personification of Spider-Woman (remember she is Jessica at that moment)... and by closing an eye she is saying goodbye to the audience, that is, to me and YOU.

A nice final line and episode if ask me.

Super Friends (1973–1985)

The best drawings of all the SF series...the episodes? well, depends on your taste.
21 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
____The Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians (1985-86)___ ---- TV Animated Show. " SuperFriends " Last Season.---

This season or show (how you like to see it) of the Superfriends had a superior quality in its drawings and animation by a mile. This last incarnation of the Justice League of the eighties had the most definite and precise drawings ever used to that date to depict heroic characters. Even today, we can notice how good work of art if was. Nevertheless, the improvement on the side of the story-lines is not as clear as on the side of the drawings...or maybe it is, it depends a lot on the episode you are referring to and your personal taste.

During last season, Firestorm became a regular member of the team of super-powered heroes, same as Cyborg became a regular member in this one and both seasons had evil Darkseid, ruler of a planet named Apokolips that he already had under his boots, as the most powerful adversary of our team of heroes. While Firestorm and Cyborg didn´t seem in my opinion as characters interesting enough despite how powerful they were, mostly Firestorm, having Darkseid as a recurring villain, among other good elements, made the show worthy of its "Galactic Guardians" title.

Two historically important Episodes:

Episode 4: THE FEAR; it was the first time that the origin of the BATMAN was told in the screen media, that is, outside comics or graphic novels, after that, pretty much every version of the character mentions that origin, pretty much unaltered.

Episode 8: THE DEATH OF SUPERMAN; Based on an "out of sequence" story by Jerry Siegel (the original creator of the Man of Steel), it tells the tale of Superman being apparently poisoned by an enormous dose of Kryptonite. In the early nineties, a series of comics and their respective Graphic Novel by the title of "Death of Superman" became among the greatest bestsellers in the field.

We will also have Rollo thinking that the gods have only given him a life of humiliation, and he will be told that the gods have given him a chance to get his right into Valhalla by a woman who probably loves him... ...But first things first: Opposite forces with rival brothers in each side fight, very probably to the death with similar, maybe equal amount of weapons and mirror-like strategy...it was a miracle that they didn´t end all dead.

Tall princess Aslaug, who claims to be a descendant of Brunhilde and Sigurd (THE Brunhild and Sigurd, heroes of the Northern SAGAS), arrives to the place of Ragnar with a son in her belly (guess whose!), and of course Lagertha won´t be exactly happy about it. Lagertha is a descendant of farmers who were proud of being farmers and is not intimidated by princess Aslaug but she sure felt displaced. Ragnar, Lagertha and Bjorn, our most important characters from season one will have to take decisions that will affect the rest of their destinies...and the season is just starting!!!!!!!

As I said, They are not losing any time!!!!!!!

Floki is probably mortally wounded, let´s hope not, it´s an interesting character. Bjorn is so far my favorite character, he is loyal and tries to be righteous and let´s hope no one kills him anytime soon. Lagertha keeps all her dignity in this episode, nobody expected less. Siggy, poor Siggy, her man always seems to be dying, almost sentenced to death or leaving, and even before that, somehow her character always seemed sad.

A Hero for Every Necessity...or Almost :)

Warning: Spoilers
Justice League Unlimited. -------Initiation-------

A Hero For Every Necessity...or Almost :)

The presentation episode for Green Arrow, a modern kind of Robin Hood who defends not only the poor, but the common man in general, and that in principle is not interested in glorious missions like the ones of the Justice League.

It is interesting, and to an extent funny, having Green Lantern and Green Arrow arguing so much and being so few unfriendly to each other when the most famous of the Green Lanterns (H. Jordan) and Green Arrow were often depicted as an excellent team and sometimes even best friends in the comics.

This is also, and much more importantly the presentation episode for this expanded version of the original team of just seven members. Many of the most known, and also some of the most unknown characters of the Justice League were depicted listening to Superman´s speech, so I think it was a very exciting episode not because what it showed, but because it made us feel interested about the episodes to come.

Oh, and as most episodes, this one has an extra bonus if one of your favorite "Leaguers" appeared or worked in the mission for that day.

In this first mission: Supergirl, Captain Atom (don´t confuse with "The Atom" who is scientist Ray Palmer and was sitting in WW´s shoulder), and as we had already mentioned Green Lantern and Green Arrow.

Justice League: The Enemy Below (2001)

If all the Justice League episodes are going to be this good...
19 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
_______Justice League_______ Animated TV Series. Season 1. Episode 6.

_____THE ENEMY BELOW._______

If all the Justice League episodes are going to be this good...

I honestly think that the "SECRET ORIGINS" episodes gave a solid start for this TV show, even when they weren´t outstanding. Next, we had episodes 4 and 5 that I didn´t like much, and probably neither did you. Now, this one "THE ENEMY BELOW" is in my humble opinion the first episode of this series that rates somewhere between very good and excellent. With "The Enemy Below" we had, for starters, a plot where politics is an important part of the story, as it is only natural that if our Superheroes save the world (sometimes from itself) on a regular basis, their actions or the lack of them will have political and social implications.

This episode showed us a different animated AQUAMAN that the cheerful character we were used to see in "The SuperFriends" , the previous incarnation of the Justice League where AQUAMAN seemed to spend most of his time as a Superhero an didn´t have to worry about being a King with all that that implies.

Even when I missed the old school Aquaman, this incarnation of him as a tough and to a extent intransigent ruler was for sure a surprise, and maybe the most notorious part of it is that the "leaders of the surface" as he used to call our world representatives, weren´t exactly models of equanimity, justice and fairness and they didn´t even recognize Aquaman´s kingdom as a nation.

Now, we have a plot against the life of Aquaman, probably engineered by someone from his own kingdom, as the hired assassin was paid in Spanish doubloons (very probably from an old sunken ship from the times of "La Colonia" when Mexico and other countries were territories of Spain, judging from other objects in the image) and this mere attempt is about to threaten the security of the world, as Orm, Aquaman´s brother, is now planning a global attack against the world of the surface.

Highlander: Mortal Sins (1995)
Season 3, Episode 19

Father Bernard, one of my FAVORITE non-immortal heroes of HIGHLANDER THE SERIES.
19 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
______HIGHLANDER ; THE SERIES_______

MORTAL SINS.

FATHER BERNARD, ONE OF MY FAVORITE NON-IMMORTAL HEROES IN HIGHLANDER THE SERIES.

Even when he was only a child back then, Father Bernard used to be hero of the old "Résistance" fifty years ago, during the Nazi occupation in France. Now, in the early nineties, Father Bernard, the man that once was that little boy, sees in his church an evil man that was a common enemy of him and Duncan in those days.

Bernard had learned the old secret concerning Duncan´s immortality, he had seen him die and rise again. Bernard searches our HIGHLANDER and asks for his help, Duncan refuses to know him and says the common immortal's excuse that he is maybe confusing him with his father or someone else, Father Bernard does not believe him as he knows what he saw fifty years ago; finally, we have a character who has certainty that Duncan is Duncan and not his father.

Nevertheless, that brave and audacious little boy is now a very frightened man about an ex-Nazi officer that was his enemy fifty years ago during the war and that now in theory, even when Daimler (that´s our villain´s name) is still a "Supremacist", lives in a relative state of non-aggression, or is at least much less aggressive than he was 50 years before. Why?... ...Father Bernard keeps a terrible secret, during the old days of the French Résistance, little Bernard attacked and killed evil Daimler...TWICE!
