There Will Be Blood (2007)
Brilliant depiction of the Early Oil Industry in America
Well, first things first, I didn't think that I would come across a film that would have the same impact on me when i watched Atonement. Boy was I wrong! Everything in this film is pure genius on Anderson's part. Stunning cinematography,acting,score,editing....everything that I want in a film and more. An absolute masterpiece.
There Will Be Blood contains some interesting ideologies about suburban America. Most notably an incredibly isolated one. But two that come to mind are this Anti-Religious theme and Ant-capitalism. We see the character of Plaintiff, who feels uncomfortable around Eli Sunday in relation to his evangelical preaching. Daniel Day-Lewis' character is one of a seriously repressed man, who wants no more than to own every oil enterprise in the land.
What was so brilliant about this film, which I will probably say again was just absolutely bloody everything. The score I will begin with. Made by Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood, who for some strange reason did not get an Academy award nomination for this, produces a score which perfectly relates to the time period. The whole eeriness of it and the detuning of the score, adds to the bleak, corrupt atmosphere that we see on screen. Abolutly mesmerising. Something which I have to buy very soon. Still have it in my head. So brilliant" The film also contains huge Christian like imagery. For instance Plaintiff, is seen as deriving from hell, ie- we first seen him down in the pit looking for oil. From there we can see he is a violent, selfish man, who is determined to get what h wants. From there on, when he takes the son of another man and poses him as his own-also symbolises this. There are loads more but I dodn't want to give too much away as it's just blown me away! Talking of "blowing me away" the cinematography. WOW oh Wow! again I didn't think I would see should sensational cinematography since I watched Atonement back in September. Again I was seriously wrong. Throughout the film, the colour on the screen changes from dark to seriously light. Again, possibly signifies the changing of mood. One incredible piece of imagery is that scene where the oil place is on fire is unbelievably. The colours, is set up perfectly for something spectacular. I don't have the words to describe it but once you see it you'll see what I mean.
Being a Scorsese fan, I can see hell of a lot of trademarks in here that he uses. For instance the jump cuts in here, that he often uses. These, as I can see from reviews have put people off and confused them a little. For me this is is beauty of the film. It has certainly made be think about how much I take for granted everything told to me in the film. I mean Anderson takes a chunk of vita narrative information and doesn't tells us anymore. I loved this. Seriouslyy people is a good thing you know. It's something that is original and not often used. People wake up! Anyway, I loved some of the tracking shots in this, not quite beating Atonement but still some unbelievable scenes in it.
The acting...well just outstanding. Daniel Day Lewis seriously possess the inner-body of his character so well. The John Huston like voice, mannerisms, e.t.c is just mind-blowing. If he doesn't win best actor at this year's Oscars-I'l eat my own hat!! I have to say Paul Dano is seriously under-rated in this role. He brilliantly plays the twin-brothers Eli and Paul so so well. I love his crazy preaching moment...but I can't go into that much. Both actors, Dano and Day-Lewis have brilliant chemistry on screen which shows. I can't understand why Dano hasn't been credited more with his role-only a BAFTA nomination. I guess his is slightly over-shadowed by Day Lewis's performance.
Overall, the length of the film DOES NOT matter, the jump cuts, DOES NOT matter, acting, score cinematography all contribute to a sensational, outsanding film which words can't not express. I couldn't keep my eyes of it all the way through, just annoyed me that I picked a crappy version but I will get it on DVD soon.
Go out and see it when you can, you wont be disappointed. Ignore the negative comments here because they're wrong!! There Will Be Blood gave me the same experience as I had with the brilliant Atonement. One of utter admiration for the director and just all around Wownes...a word I made up right there! Oh and one quote I will never forget. A great metaphor oil.
I drink you're milkshake.........I drink it up! 10/10 There Will Be Blood left me utterly speechless and I'm sure you might feel the same.
Mangnificent film!
Atonement (2007)
Stunning, absolutely stunning
Based on Ian McEwan's award wining novel of the same name, Atonement tells the story of A British romance that spans several decades. Fledgling writer Briony Tallis, as a 13-year-old, irrevocably changes the course of several lives when she accuses her older sister's lover of a crime he did not commit.
I've waited several months to see Joe Wright's second feature film "Atonement" and it did not disappoint. For an only second feature film by 35 old Joe Wright, it's absolutely astonishing. Directed superbly on all levels. From the stunning Dunkirk visuals, to several Point of view shots empathising each character's need and feelings at that point, you can't help but feel intertwined in the story and with the characters. I haven't seen such an epic of a film since The English Patient, I hope it continues to do well at the box office and worldwide, as it deserved to. I haven't read the novel, so I will do soon.
There are many sensational tracking shots in this, which I loved. For instance, in the Dunkirk scene, we walk with Robbie and see the devastation through his eyes, just amazing. At the beginning, Briony's view of Robbie and Celia is done through two perspectives. One being what Briony believe has happened and two the real truth, this creates a dilemma for the audience as you don't really know who to believe at that point. One shot I loved was of Briony's eye, an extreme close-up almost giving a clue to the viewer. As I mentioned before, I can not believe that Wright has produced such a masterpiece of a film, in only his second feature.
The Dunkirk, scene is something to be remembered. Watching it at the cinema, I was so taken aback by the extraordinary beauty of the scene. The cinematography is sensational. It captures the mood of that time, so well that you can put yourself in there. What works is that you think what you're seeing is real, and everything in every frame of that scene. I can't really describe the words, as it won't really doesn't do justice to what I thought of the scene but let's just say I'm still thinking about it now and will always. Subsequently that scene has to be up there with some of the best war scenes ever created for the silver screen, and I don't often say that unless it's seriously something that has left me speechless beyond any recognition- that hasn't happened. Some other scenes to mention are; Celia and Briony's estate like house and the scenery and the wartime London are also sensational. Plus, there done in such a way you wouldn't expect a 21st century film to make.
As for the acting, that was wonderful from every actor in the picture. Keira Knightly does brilliantly, as she did in Pride and Prejudice, which she deservedly got an Oscar nomination for that. However doing crap films like The Pirates Franchise doesn't do her acting talents any justice. These are the films she should be making as she has the ability to become one of the best British actresses of recent years; she just needs to keep well away from blockbusters. I'm sure she'll gain her 2nd nomination at next years Oscars. However the REAL sensation n this film is James MacAvoy. For me he outshone Knightly on all levels, playing Robbie Turner so, so well that you believed in the character more that Knightly's. I don't quite know how to explain but I'm sure you'll know what I mean when you see it. MacAvoy's performance was so exquisitely done that I almost cried for the first time in a cinema. I'm hopeful MacAvoy will gain his first nomination at the Academy awards. I hope he is in chance of winning one this year, I will jump for joy if he does as he deserves it more than anyone in this film. I must not forget the incredibly supporting cast, from young Saoirse Ronan who brilliantly played Briony aged 13 ,Romola Garai who played Briony aged 18 and the great Vanessa Redgrave(older Briony) who moved me to tears with her final speech at the end. I hope the Academy recognises at least one of those actresses, because they all deserve some recognition.
That soundtrack is stunning beyond words. It brilliantly blends in the mood of that period with every scene that you understand what's going on and the scene becomes visually engaging. I'm sure this score will be Oscar nominated! Finally, I'm sure Antonement will be nominated in several category's at the 2008 Academy awards as it should and deserved to. I haven't seen such an outstanding British film as his for a while now. Although The Queen came close last year, Atonement is the one for me. This is a modern masterpiece and will become an instant classic, as did The English Patient did back in 1996. I hope you will all go out and see it when it reaches your local cinema, as you all should. The best film I've seen this year!
Ying xiong (2002)
Stunning, beautiful cinematography from Yimou!
I wanted to watch this purely because I enjoyed House Of Flying Daggers so much however I was slightly disappointed but not quite. Really Hero is an odd film to review. At times you're left wowed by typical Yimou cinematography then you're left confused by the plot. Nonetheless I did enjoy the stunning fight sequences and use of colour throughout and the chemistry between Maggie Cheung's character and Tony leung's; which is understandable considering they have worked together on numerous occasions.
I've never actually seen a film with Jet Li in oddly. Usually because he just lacks that little something I like to see in actors and at times, what he acts in. He did act farely well but it wasn't particularly great considering he was in a Yimou film. I did get confused by his character, amongst other things. I couldn't quite make out what he purpose was as a character and why he is doing what he is doing. The characters of Maggie Cheng, Zhang Zi and Tony Leung were also confusing, again i just couldn't figure out what their purpose was and, again what the hell they are doing. I suppose my review is looking at little confusing while you are reading this, but you will see what I mean when you watch this.
Overall a more stylistic piece of film rather than substance but it is worth watching if you're a Yimou fan for instance and to see why on earth Tarantino marketed the film himself rather than Yimou!
2046 (2004)
Another brilliant film from Wong Kar Wai!
Certainly from the beginning I thought it would be as good as "In the Mood for Love" but, as the film progressed ideas within the film didn't seem to make sense and got me confused. Those ideas though, complex they may be, but mixed with the stunning cinematography I was totally fixated by it.
The idea of Chow's book running parallel to his life was also a little confusing at times but also proved to be an assit for me, as I understood Chow a lot better and ,certainly you're able to sympathise e a little with him.
The three leading ladies; Li Gong,Zhang Ziyi and Faye Wong were all very good but a bit under developed. Perhaps that was the case for Li Gong and Faye Wong, Zhang Ziyii seemed to be very childlike at times but was certainly the better out of the three.Tony Leung Chiu Wai was pretty good. I understood how he felt and what the affair meant to him in In the Mood For Love.
One of the best things in this film and from " In the mood for love" is the brilliant soundtrack. It captures the emotion of the film and the atmosphere. I loved the slow motion at certain points, like a freeze frame in time- just brilliant
I recommend everyone to watch 2046 but watch In the Mood For Love first as you will be able to understand it a lot better.
Psycho (1960)
Hitchcok's best!
Definitely Hitchocoks best, or the best Hitchcock film I've seen. the camera work and that superb score by Bernard Hermann makes this one of the greatest films ever made.
Anthony Perkins is undoubtedly one of the best villains in a movie that I've seen. So scary and unpredictable. The fact that Janet Leigh only made an appearance up to 40 mins or so into the film makes her appearance memorable and Norman Bates.
Contains one of the greatest scenes in cinematic history. That score by Herman mixed with th illusions Marion supposedly being stabbed then the shot of the blood pouring into the plug hole is just unlike something that i've ever seen. Unfortunately I've given this 4.5 stars rather than 5 because the ending and the whole " psycho killer" thing has been done so many times over the last decade or so the film felt very familiar to me.
Overall definitely Hitchcock's best work and now I must watch some of Hitchcock's films done in the 40's. Definitely a film everyone must watch. Highly recommended!
Thunderbirds (2004)
A interesting, but a unusually laughable film
Well I'm not sure what to say about this film, due to the lack of any quality at all. I enjoyed it, mainly because I laughed through it! One performance ,which was near enough to the character, was Anothony Edwards' performance of Brains! It was very good, Almost making me believe he was Brains.
If you want to see it, don't go by yourself. take your children or younger brothers and sisters-they'll enjoy it more!I have to declare that the original Gerry Anderson puppet version is better and shouldn't have been made in such a poor way!
Not bad, could have been much much better

Taxi Driver (1976)
Magnificent!
The film stars Robert De Niro,Jode Foster and Cybil Shepard. De Niro plays Travis Bickle, a taxi driver who is suffering from extreme insomnia and gets increasingly annoyed with the behaviour of people on the streets of New York.
This is a truly disturbing but great, great film directed by Martin Scorcese. Robert De Niro plays Travis Bickle superbly, certainly had me convinced about the feelings and brutal thoughts of this character.
The Only flaws about it are the fact that Travis gets away with, what he does, at the end of the film. Showing a message that you can get away with doing things like that.
Overall a masterpiece of a film, which you should definitely go and rent if you haven't seen it.

Collateral (2004)
a too long and disappointing film
The film starts off with Jada Pinkett-Smith's character meeting Jamie Foxx's character in his cab. I felt the beginning ruined the whole entire film for me; it was a pointless, dragged out scene that was too boring for me! What later followed was Tom Cruise, playing an unconvincing hit-man which was too OTT. Compared with the previous film i watched(The Bourne Supremacy) it hadn't lived up to my expectations of it at all!
I can't understand why it was so long and why Jamie Foxx has been nominated for an Oscar???! He,along with Tom Cruise were both portraying their characters in a very unconvincing manner-Foxx was to much of a wimp, for me....I go on for ages
Overall,a very disappointing film

Life of Brian (1979)
Hilarious film, you'll never get tired of!
I don't know about you but i get increasingly annoyed at Christian's beliefs on God and Jesus. Do these people actually exist???...anyway, The life of Brian is a film centred around Brian,a 40 something who still lives with his Mum! From there we see numerous accounts of Brian's willingness to be independent.
Overall the film keeps the jokes coming and coming. Graham Chapman is just amazing and hilarious as Brian,Michael Palin provides some very funny characters as does the rest of the cast.
My favourite comedy of all time and deserves to be in the top 250
8/10
The O.C. (2003)
Fantastic!
When I thought of the prospect of a brand new show all about the lives of teenagers in Orange County,I decided to watch. I really felt as if I wanted to be there; the guys, the sun, great houses and much more.
The O.C is amazing for people or both sexes, whether you're 24 or 15 you're sure to love it because it contributed to aspects of boy and girls dreams and desires!
One downside to the show is Marisha's acting skills and the fact nearly all of them are over 20 years old!
Overall the O.C is an amazing show which I'll probably be telling my children in years to come about it!!
Lost in Translation (2003)
A Truly Captivating Film
The Film stars Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson as two lonely Americans, who are staying in Japan. They develop a deep friendship and form a strong bond with each other
The beginning and end of LIT, certainly keeps the audience watching- partly due to the incredible scenery, direction and acting.
Bill Murray is fantastic as Bob Harris,a failing Hollywood actor and Scarlett Johanssen as Charlotte,20 something female unknown about her future. It was a shame that Bill Murray didn't get the Oscar for this film!
A great film, which still makes me cry after watching it 4 times- Go out and rent it if you haven't seen it!
5/5 *****
Lost in Space (1998)
Much better than the awful TV series
Seeing this film at 10 years old I thought it was pretty good with special effects,Gary Oldman as a brilliant Dr Smith and just the general direction of the film. As I've got older I've seen the TV series on FX, and compared the two. For one thing I don't understand why critics gave awful reviews because, the TV series to me was ABSOLUTE RUBBISH! Over-the top acting and just weird episodes where they somehow are in the same place every time! This has to be one of the better remakes of a TV show; brilliant effects, story and good casting
RATING 4/5 ****
