Not funny, no plot and boiler-plate acting - Save your time.
23 March 2023
So I was looking for a dumb movie that would give me a few laughs and wow me with a bit of cool action; I only got 1 out of the 3 things I wanted - dumb.

Be clear about this; I wanted a laugh, I wanted to laugh - it did not happen - it's just not funny.

And Hugh Grant..., I now know what voice he uses when picking up prostitutes in LA - just awful.

Guy Ritchie's writing has hit an all-time low with this. Nothing original at all. I mean you'd think they realized this was not funny or maybe they just do not care - but if not funny then what? A boring boilerplate movie of "I can hack anything", I can fight anybody, and that is it. Just terrible.

Stillwater (2021)

Forgive yourself for no one else will.
22 August 2021
This was a great movie and all the characters, especially the little girl, Maya were really well rounded out and played well. One thing I like about Matt Damon (as opposed to say Ben Afleck) is that Mr Damon gets into the character and you forget it's Matt Damon and you're watching Bill get in way over his head.

There is almost zero action in this movie, didn't need it - but it is tense and at times has you on the edge of your seat.

A quick comment about the daughter - I've read other reviews which say they had no sympathy for her; mainly as a result of her "entitled behavior". I disagree with that and I thought the actress played her very well. When you take into context (viewed in the rear mirror of having watched the movie), you understand her actions and words from the beginning. I don't think it is a spoiler to say that her growing up a lesbian in Stillwater, Oklahoma, could not have been easy. And with the other things which are described to us from her childhood would have culminated in her really believing that the world was stacked against her from the outset.

A sad movie in many respects, but one also that leaves you with some hope and I think one of those movies that may have the effect of improving whoever watches it.

A weird, sad at times, hilarious at others movie
2 August 2021
If you watch Scandi movies you'll recognize the actors, and they come together in a fantastic way in this movie. Don't go to fetch a drink while watching it because you'll miss an important link - there are so many little touches but they come together to make one of the best movies I've seen in a while.

At times you sit quietly saddened perhaps even horrified with what is happening, but then a second later you're trying to control a belly laugh - such is this movie. Totally weird and wonderful; hats off to the writer/s 1st class job.

Beautiful film
17 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Everyone else has already provided the details of what makes this film beautiful and intense.

My only fault with it is why didn't the Captain get Dersu some glasses instead of or in combination with the new rifle.

Stopped watching after first scene
21 September 2020
The reason I stopped watching after the first scene was simply because it was so stupid. Soaking someone in diesel, "because it burns slower" and then (this is the really dumb part), putting a half-smoked cigar in their mouth and walking out. As any fool knows (except the director) a cigar will go out if you don't draw on it. So all the guy in the bathtub had to do was not draw on the cigar. Plus if you drop a burning cigar into diesel there's a very good chance the diesel will not ignite. Just dumb.

Character driven but the characters lack depth
14 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
There is only a minimal amount of action in this movie and it was reasonably done. The movie focuses instead on the characters in particular Buckey and Simone - the gangster and the undercover police detective put in place to take him down. Both main actors gave an okay performance, nothing stellar, but nothing over bad; the problem lies with the script which tries to paint Buckey as a Robin Hood type character but in hopelessly cliched terms. The rest of the cast are all incredibly "hammy" - particularly the Sargent - "sarge" is all ham. I liked the Jamaican patois but there was not enough depth to it - go search a few Bob Marley interviews and you'll see what I mean. Overall the movie failed to satisfy due to a poor script, hammy acting and a thin plot.

Didn't work for me.

Warning: Spoilers
Firstly, "Homing Pigeon's" are called, 'Homing' for a reason; because they fly home i.e. one-way. But somehow our hero has the Fedex of pigeons, give them an address and off they go. Dumb. Secondly, a bunch of reviewers have remarked on how cool FW is... right... talking to little girls in the park and then offering to buy her an ice-cream, cringe city - just came off like a pedophile. Third swirling your gun around does not a Samurai make (and looks really stupid). Other bad things... Swapping license plates with another car - dude, choose the same color plates it might take a bit longer for the owner of the other car to realize. ... On a focused Samurai mission... stop for a little bird-watching at a crucial moment and take out a couple of people hunting a bear. Good points for promoting environmental awareness perhaps but not at the expense of a movie's theme. Semaphore... forgot to mention that earlier, apparently the whole flock of pigeons were previously in the navy... were they learned semaphore. Good things - not many... the Italian mafia were about as cliched as you get... but the music was okay. I get the artsy references and so on but you know wrap in something that actually works. I got the movie because one of the reviews called it, "an amazingly good character driven film". Just what characters they're talking about I have no idea... except maybe the black dog... he played a good part.

God might forgive but I can't....
27 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
It gets two stars for the camera work of a modern Bangkok at night - and that's it - the sole redeeming feature of this otherwise featureless movie.

I read, "Oh but it's art", or, "Those who love cinema will love this..." - hogwash; I love cinema, and art and this movie is neither. From small details (it costs a little more than a few thousand baht to put a contract hit on a senior cop in Bangkok), to hammy acting; even "silent" Ryan hammed it up, albeit silently; to a boring set of thinly plotted events cast in a dreamlike way so that the producers could waffle on about the "art" movie they made.

Don't waste your time.

Predictable but not a bad movie
9 June 2013
Warning: Spoilers
The credibility of the set up for the last third of the movie was very well done. From the beginning where hope was established, to the steady way in which 'with patience and saliva the elephant screws the ant', was well-paced, and believable; the bonding of the "little" people - the other 99% was a nice touch - mainly because it reflected real life.

The climax too had its moments. A nice, non-too-subtle, homage to 'Taxi Driver' with DeNiro, (in this movie our protagonist is practicing his fast draw in a mirror and the next scene opens with a taxi door - the word "Taxi" there for us all to get the reference).

For me the ending was too contrived ymmv. I appreciated the "twist" but came away feeling it was less than plausible. Any Wall Street types I know would be on their knees begging forgiveness and offering up their first born rather than having a rant about how the rich will always screw the poor and that's the American Way.

Likewise the fact that his buddies were there at the end. I get that they were NY Cops, but NY cops have precincts and they were way out of theirs.

All in all a solid movie that isn't a waste of your time. Poignant movements delivered well and if you can suspend your belief for a little while the ending could be satisfying for you.

Just don't bother
21 May 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Awful is right. I mark this as having spoilers because I'm going to tell you about the whole movie, however I will not give anything away...

A bit of father daughter BS. Then a massive totally stupid car chase, then a bit of totally "ham" acting; then father son BS; more father son BS, a fight, a shootout; bit more father son BS. The Big "surprise" (yeah, really); then another shootout, the a family reunion BS.

Yawn.

Come on Bruce - go do a gritty Western or something; this is beneath you (and that's saying a lot).

Gritty, off-beat - worth your time
16 September 2012
Nowadays I reckon we're lucky if we get a great western every decade or so. This doesn't qualify for great, but it is good. If you're expecting "Hollywood" - raise your expectations... this is better.

The action in the movie plays well. With influences of Peckinpah mixed with ("early not quite there yet") John Woo; credit where it's due, it didn't get unreal.

The dialog could have been tweaked better, I reckon, there was ample opportunity through the settings which were done well. The scene in front of the barber shop is an example of where the script could have gone deeper, and pushed this movie into great. Overall I liked the pacing, the arc and the various spread of characters. It didn't get overly deep into the characters, but neither were they shallow - there's an edge to all of them. I thought Montgomery Ford did a fine job.

One thing I really liked about this western? It treats the audience with a bit of respect - allowing me to draw my own conclusions; meeting with my expectations in terms of credibility, there were no "cop outs" in plot. What happened was a logical, if whacky series of events.

If you really like westerns, I don't think you'll be disappointed. I am very surprised by the low rating the movie seems to have - strange; maybe good, hard-boiled westerns are just out of style...

Acting let it down
26 June 2012
What could have been a good movie was let down by bad acting, particularly by the Director/Actor. A terrible Irish accent and "hammy" at the best of times. Others weren't much better. I understand that this was a low-budget indie film and applaud the effort, but surely there's more acting talent than this. Apart from the acting, the events leading to the "main plot" do not get there until halfway through the movie and then fade away almost as quickly. What we are really watching is a movie about three bad guys on the run; and that could have worked, but didn't have enough character development to make us care.
