The Northman (2022)

Eggers shows further broadness
6 August 2022
The Witch was really good. The Lighthouse was fantastic. Now here completes the debut trilogy with yet again a different genre. Most challenging is making a film over 2hrs in length engaging, and it kind of trips up a bit here where the pacing runs of puff. Starts off brilliant with ritual and murder before settling into become a brooding revenge thriller. It does offer some great scenes later on, this is my favourite Nicole Kidman movie, and others delivery a strong performance too. Shorter would've been better.

Typical woke Yankee propaganda

Lol, I'm just here to see Donald Cerrone's acting skills. He was better than expected, as was the whole film. Not quite the level of drama of a HBO series or the dialogue of a Tarantino film but an enjoyable story with good pacing and a fair bit blood spraying around. Nick Searcy's performance was the most enjoyable. Being set not long after the civil war, I'm not sure if it's technically a western. So there's my bias review, probably be 5/10 without Cerrone, it's better than real low budget garbage I watched during lockdown.

I predicted it wouldn't get a third season.
30 June 2022
Season 1 was 10/10. Recommendable to anyone, not just sci-fi nerds. Season 2 I'd say 6/10. It was just too weird. I like weird, but it was a constant "where are they going with this" weird. It went from a show everyone could enjoy to avantgarde sci-fi. Huge shame as we need another season to explain what went on in season 2. Probably too ambitious in its depth of what was occurring.

Ms. Marvel (2022)

Fine if you like Dawson's Creek or Party of Five.

Personally I do not. Good chance you're too young to remember those shows. They fall under the genre of monotonous teen drama, as does this. That said, if you liked the Ms Marvel book you might like this. I only read the first arc when it came out. As a whole I don't like teen hero comics because adults writing teen dialogue is often goofy and off-point. Zeb Wells' New Mutants is the only one I'd consider a good story. To the point, I don't like the show because I'm not the target audience. Vellani's acting is fine, and the father seems like a good character. There's just too much drama that isn't interesting.

There's also a bit of alluding to this trendy revisionist history where every country was a wonderful hippie commune until the British arrived and ruined their peaceful utopia. History is full of sinners and suffering. Not the writers fault I guess but that of the modern education system.

It like changes the paradigm or something

It's perfect. Was a bit worried seeing CG animation in the intro but the movie is real animation. Biggest surprise is the plot is a bit more elaborate than Do America. All the stupidity you want is still there but it actually has a good thriller plot that isn't always obvious. Judge can still do Butthead's voice 100%, but Beavis is a bit off at times, not enough to really matter. Best Black Sabbath song chosen to feature in it.

Are you scared of puddles and men in sandals?
23 March 2022
Probably not. Well there's painful dialogue in abundance and sometimes a figure lurking in the background. It's a standard cheesy run of the mill 80s horror except you gotta wait right till the end for anything to happen. May have lost 20 IQ points watching this. Proceed with caution.

Decent mid-budget thriller
15 March 2022
Captures the good times of drinking and pills from the days of misspent youth really well. Glad my time was before social media ruined everything. Interesting story built around the "is this really happening" genre while offering some commentary on social issues, it goes to some dark place and gets fairly intense. My only criticism, as seen here, would be the current trend of directors changing the shot angle every 5 seconds, too much imagery to process.

A classic gem

Throw all your usual standards out the window. This is evil Robocop made quick and cheap with a great deal of self awareness. Just watch it for the dialogue and have a laugh. I believe the film came out as intended. The best technical aspect is Gesswein's voice It's a bit. Similar to Maurice LaMarche's, he really would have done well in the modern VA world.

The adventures of Pat sitting in his cell
6 February 2022
To be fair, there's a bit more to it than that, and Fairbrass is a slightly different character. Here he spends a lot of time contemplating on what it means to be a man that feels nothing. When he's in company of others there's usually fights breaking out or words of wisdom on how to survive. Overall it's an okay film, it never really builds up tension to dramatic key points though. The directing is all over the place, some good, some not so. The music often doesn't work.

Stories within stories
29 January 2022
Starts off promising. Good production quality and decent acting. Then we wait for the story to unravel, and wait, and wait, and wait... bad pacing, pointless drama. Some interesting developments occur but it quickly falls flat. Stupid ending which really punctuates what a waste of time watching this was.

More like a bonus 2 episodes
17 January 2022
Personally I would've been happy if the series ended with season 6 (or season maybe 5. The one that ends with everyone in the house and they're getting along celebrating). It was never going to be the awesome action series as it began as, and they'd already ripped the heart out of all the characters in the following ones. Far too much flashback story in this movie. Wild schemes is what we like. This is just a conclusion to season 7 with filler.

Repetitive but enduring
22 December 2021
I'm generally a casual and will wait for the English dub but to see what the memes were about I gave the sub a go and ended up watched it all. First 5 or so episode is just a girl seeing ghost and ignoring them, over and over again. Yet it's made well enough to keep watching, the design of the ghosts is fantastic. Slowly little bits are added until around episode 9 or 10 when it starts looking like it has a story arc. Interested to see where it goes in season 2.

More nuanced than you'd expect
22 November 2021
The only people this film could upset are those Qanon idiots that got sucked into that garbage. Other's might not like it because it's got that awkward Napoleon Dynamite style of humour to it. Given the budget it's an excellent production all-round. The care given to the dialogue gives Duncan's character full dimensions, he's not simply a stereotype, though there's hamming up of stereotypes throughout the film. Simply marvellous.

Not bad for a Hollywood kung fu movie
13 November 2021
Also not a bad Marvel film given it's weakness of obscure characters. Shang-Chi didn't pop up much in the 616 during the last 15 years of comic events. More of a Marvel Knights series character in recent times. What real saves the film is Awkwafina's performance of the quirky sidekick. She's actually funny rather than annoying.

Very lewd weeb garbage that your father might enjoy
4 November 2021
The story in this isn't great. It's just a repetitive sitcom with the same joke being the main character's face gets shoved in one of the women's breasts or groin. That said, it works well as I still find it amusing after 10 episodes. There's some other usual tropes like the nosebleeds and the violent female that can't express her feelings. You're probably just going to watch this for the nudity, in which case you'll likely enjoy it.

Good murder investigation story buried in a boring series
20 October 2021
As it is, it would've made a better 2hr movie. All the crime stuff is great, but the characters are not very interesting. The story is very complex, not so easy to figure out what's coming next, so worth watching if you can withstand the unrelated story parts.

It seems cheap and obvious, but wait a bit
18 October 2021
Not a good horror per se. It's a light hearted slice of life film with the threat of a savage beast lurking in the background. The start and retrospective montages throughout the film are both deliberately cheesy and poorly acted. But as it shifts gears into drama, the acting straightens itself up and it starts to get your attention. Neat little film that surprised me, and I'd never thought of drinking all the liquor from a bar mat until now.

A long time ago in a county far, far away... the saga begins
4 October 2021
About as good as the second one I'd say. Not as funny as the third nor as gritty as the first. Still, it's good to see how things came together, at least in a "based on" cinematic sense.

Almost had it
28 September 2021
You've got a girl going into a strange middle of nowhere town, she's on a mission, it's going be dangerous. The townsfolk are colourful characters and escapades ensure. Very enjoyable two thirds to begin with but then it gets a bit formulated, predictable, serious, and loses its charm. Still would recommend.

A thousand times better than The Bore'nting of Bly Manor
25 September 2021
But a few miles behind The Haunting of Hill House. Biggest weakness is Biedel's character, looking like a generic Australian cricket player and bringing in endless monologues that are not interesting. Could' cut his speeches in half and shorten the series by one episode. But everything else is worth sticking around for. Sloyan does a fantastic character that you instantly hate. Linklater is solid too. There's a lot of Catholicism to get through, as it's a central theme, but it's done well. The supernatural aspect is a winner, enough is offered in each episode to make the slow parts worth it. Flanagan is back on track.

Cowboys, Geishas and Samurais, oh my!
14 September 2021
Coupled with an adjacent village that resembles a Mad Max dystopia made by Terry Gilliam. In short, it's a story about a guy that has to rescue a girl. It's not a standard action movie, normies aren't going to like it as you can see from the bad reviews. It's as weird as Mandy but with the "wtf?" factor toned down a bit. Does it make sense? No, not really. I think there's is a metaphor about time throughout it though. Is it good? Well, it's visually interesting and you'll get some laughs from it.

Needs fleshing out
10 September 2021
All the technical aspects are fine. Marshall does a great job of portraying an awkward introvert. It's just that the overall story is very thin and stretched out slowly. Couple and a new friend go off to a cabin, there's talking, lots of talking, I get they're establishing the characters but this drags out. Anyway, it's a "is this really happening or am I crazy?" plot once it gets going, and it does that part well. There's just not much to it to make for a solid film.

Zzzzzzzz

Possibly the slowest paced mockumentary to date. If you can stay awake for the first hour the found footage part is okay. Something more interesting and similar is the real life story of UFC fighter Evan Tanner. Go read/podcast about him instead.

The synopsis doesn't disappoint. It's great story, and while it might get a bit slow and dry at times, I was never sure what would happen next For the most part it's a psychological thriller that works well.

It's not what we wanted but still very enjoyable
23 July 2021
It's a Teela series, not a He-Man series, and that's upset a lot of people. Her motivations and narrative are quite puerile. It's still a fun adventure movie length series with great villains. Love what they did with Tri-Clops. I had low expectations mostly for the quality of animation but that came through alright. Solid voice cast despite Skeletor and Orko not sounding as awesome as they once did. Apart from one haircut and some racial diversity it's really not that woke, not enough to ruin it. Calm down and try to enjoy life.
