God Awful

One of the worst episodes of television I've ever watched. Pretentious. Boring...Deadly dull. No likable characters. At all. Nothing compelling. At all. Pointless.

Better Than Most TV Today
26 February 2024
Good concept, way too many episodes. It's a very typical Stephen King story, although it's quite similar to It. Just without the kids. Great beginning. A lot of meandering. Weak ending. One surprising thing was the weakness of the dialogue. Considering King's typical dialogue prowess, I suppose this failing is the screenwriter's failing.

The cast is pretty good, although there were some definite missteps. In particular, Ralph and Holly are not very charismatic and overall weak primary protagonists. A major problem is the length. There are a lot of unnecessary scenes. Other scenes dragged on way to long.

Also, even the darkest movies can benefit from occasional levity and humor. Otherwise shows drift into relentless depression. It's hard to watch those when you're looking for an escape. More writers should try to emulate The Last of Us. A stellar show.

But, it is worth a watch.

True Detective (2014– )

Mixed Bag
17 January 2024
True Detective appears to be a one hit wonder. The first season, while a little quirky at times, was mesmerizing. The writing was pretty good. The acting was stellar, especially from the leads. (9) The second season was convoluted and dreary. (6) The third season was a bit better, but still not worth your viewing hours. (6.5) I've only seen one episode of the fourth season, but it appears to be another dud. (6.5 for episode one.)

How can this show have such stellar acting, every single season, but be subpar? It's the writing. It's always the writing. No one seems to be able to tell a story these days? Well that's not true. The Last of Us has phenomenal writing. (10+)

Should Have Been Better
24 February 2023
I love the Lord of the Rings. I like The Silmarillion. I also like the Peter Jackson movie trilogy, although Two Towers almost ruined the series for me. It had a bit of a Clone Wars vibe. But Rings wasn't quite that terrible.

The plot is mostly incomprehensible, convoluted, or maybe just dumb. The acting and casting are quite good, although no one stands out with much charisma. The cinematography is excellent.

The writing, as with so many shows in this era of television, is patently bad. No character is likable or worthy of too much investment by viewers. I didn't care what happened to most of them. The show is much too action oriented. It's not as bad as Jackson's Two Towers. I never looked forward to watching. I only watched because it's Tolkien.

(It's not NEAR as bad as The Wheel of Time. That's a whole different level of terribleness.)

Brilliant But Flawed
2 February 2023
The Winds of War is my favorite novel and this is a very good television adaptation. It is marred by several bad casting choices. Ali Macgraw is too old and to weak an actress for the part. She is the weakest part of the series. Jan-Michael Vincent is also too old but he does a much better job than Macgraw. John Houseman and Deborah Winters are weak and unconvincing. The rest of the cast are stellar. Several of these casting mistakes were greatly improved in Part II. The two exceptions there are Byron, who is very generic and the actor who plays Hitler. He's incredibly over the top and buffoonish.

Goofy Disappointing Show
13 January 2023
Homeland belongs in the fantasy genre. It's one of the most implausible shows I've ever seen. An unlikable and psychotic CIA agent bumbles along breaking all kinds of federal laws and is allowed to stay on the job? And who is writing these scripts? 14 year olds who grew up reading Alex Rider and taking adderall?

How this show got so many glowing reviews and lasted so long is beyond me. Does anyone actually believe it's realistic in any way? It's every bit as dumb as Jack Reacher and Jack Bauer. At least Jack Reacher has a likable main character and 24 had the grumpy girl.

Mandy Patinkin is the best thing about the show. Great actor with gravitas.

Good Popcorn Entertainment
4 August 2022
Arrow is excellent, but mindless, entertainment. It's a soap opera with action. Our heroes are likable and vulnerable. Their goals are sometimes obscure. But it's a fun way to pass the time.

Only One Thing Missing
17 May 2022
Excellent show. The only difference with the original is the obvious. The missing character is the bureaucracy and structure of the LAPD. Otherwise it's great. Superb casting and acting. (Unlike The Lincoln Lawyer.) Quality writing. It's a worthy Bosch successor.

Oh, the commercials suck, but it's a show that's worth it.

Weird, Disjointed And Uncompelling
9 May 2022
Terrible adaptation. There's no flow. It's a disjointed, convoluted mess. What were the creators thinking? Awful writing. So many poor choices and changes to the story. No character development. Terrible direction. Mostly bad casting.

Criminal waste of great material. Ughhhhhhhhh!

Hopeful Start
9 May 2022
Uneven but promising new Star Trek. A couple of the cast members appear uncharismatic, but it's early. The writing is fair. They should drop flashbacks.

Good news, it's not in your face woke righteousness.

After one episode it shows promise. It's the best recent iteration. 🤞🏻🤞🏻

I like the premise of this show and it's okay. It's a passable paranormal fix. The characters are bland. The world is inconsistent and not very intriguing.

Should Have Been Much Much Better.

Considering the epic events this episode covered, it is a relatively speak entry. The writing and pace were lack luster. The acting and production values were as terrific as ever.

One Of The Best

The best episodes from The Crown are those that directly revolve around Queen Elizabeth. This is one of the best. This series is remarkable and one of the best in television history.

Parson Weems Comes To Television
13 February 2022
Newt Gingrich's name is attached to this documentary, but I watched it anyway.

This documentary paints a glowing portrait of George Washington. This is a good thing. There is a need for documentaries like this, especially for young Americans. America desperately needs heroes and there are few finer than George Washington.

George Washington had flaws. He was a human being. George Washington owned slaves. This is also an important story that Americans should know. It's not told here and that's okay. Students should be taught about Washington and the other founders and slavery, but in high school.

America needs heroes.

Cartoonish
12 February 2022
Reacher is a well cast, well acted cartoon featuring a super hero drifter. The premise is silly (as is the whole Reacher book series). The show appears aimed at juvenile males of all ages.

Fun 1950s Police Show
24 January 2022
Excellent show. It is essentially a police soap opera with lots of plot lines. Some good. Some great. Good acting, especially the lead female officer and the villainous sergeant. The writing is basic, but sometimes that's what you want. It is very bingeable and doesn't leave you depressed like so many dramas do today. Too bad there are only 15 episodes.

Great Show
10 January 2022
This is a great show. Great casting. Good acting. Great characters. The writing is average. The only thing I disliked is why oh WHY do they make main characters "the wrongly accused man?" Or in this case wrongly accused woman. It's lazy writing and really dumb.

Bailey is a train wreck. My favorite and only wholly admirable character is "her majesty."

Quirky And cm Melodramatic
6 January 2022
Quirky and more unrealistic than most mysteries. (All mysteries are unrealistic to one degree or another.) It's well cast, well acted and fairly entertaining. I particularly liked the lead woman. Great actress.

Action Packed But Mindless
6 January 2022
Line of Duty is action packed but implausible. Most crime dramas are unrealistic to a degree, but LOD is over the top. It's well acted, well produced, fairly suspenseful, and entertaining to watch. The character development is minimal. The dialogue average.

I suppose I fell for the hype about the show. I was disappointed.

Not Worth Your Valuable TV Watching Time
3 January 2022
When you have great source material and add bad casting, bad acting, bad writing, bad editing choices, and no meaningful character development you get The Wheel of Time. So disappointing and bodes ill for the upcoming Lord of the Rings prequel.

Hoping for much more...
19 November 2021
I was looking forward to WOT since its announcement. After the first episode, it appears to be a mediocre adaptation.

It's an odd show. It's supposedly expensive but it feels cheap. I'm not familiar with most of the cast but they are mostly unremarkable. There are a few high notes such as Lan and possibly Padan Fain. Moraine is pretty good but lacks gravitas. She's seems like a lesser Galadriel from LOTR. All the Edmond's Fielders are average. The producers obviously had diversity foremost in their casting choices. This is fine but they should have focused more on talent and charisma. It's a remarkably vanilla cast.

The tone of the show is confused. It's YA pretending to be Game of Thrones.

The special effects are weirdly unimpressive. The dialogue is hard to hear and banal.

I'll keep watching and hoping for improvement, but so far it's a disappointing dud.

I Want to Like This Show
14 November 2021
Read Terry Brooks decades ago. I enjoyed it and was looking forward to the series. I love the general premise and visually this is great. But the dialogue? Oh my. I suppose this is the MTV effect. Maybe the target audience is 13? The dialogue is terrible. The acting is subpar, except for Allanon. He's the one actor who brings a little needed gravitas. It's hard to watch.
