Atrangi Re (2021)
A Chakachak Waste!
This film is a satire on human intelligence. Entertainment and logic are not mutually exclusive but Bollywood still largely insists on using anything to achieve mind numbing love stories and dance sequences ('entertainment'). In this case, schizophrenia was mutilated because there seemed to be a lack of new ideas on which to make yet another love story. And the irony? An actual psychiatry student is trying to cure schizophrenia with parlour tricks and the illness is romanticised without any context besides romance. There are a few good things too though, including good actors but mostly only in the first half.
Don't Look Up (2021)
What could have been!
"Is it Omicron or Delta or your period or a cold or flu or allergies or anxiety or menopause or food poisoning or a tumour or PTSD or parenting or stress?" Nope, it's just disappointment from the promising context and star studded cast of 'Don't Look up'.
Our Souls at Night (2017)
Fresh take on love
A poignant story of an older aged romance that keeps you wanting for more, this film is unhurried and yet deeply engaging. Ritesh Batra steps up to the brilliance of Robert Redford and Jane Fonda, whose ephemeral love story offers a delightfully fresh perspective on love.
Chung Hing sam lam (1994)
Romantic melancholy!
ChungKing Express explores two tales of love and longing, combined by a constant theme of one sided love. Not unlike Wong Kar Wai's other work, the film is an emotion that hypnotises you through its vivid imagery and masterful editing.
Decoupled (2021)
Intricately chopped but not finely cooked
Intricately chopped but not finely cooked, Hardik Mehta's debut series -
Decoupling is the story of an urban Indian couple falling out of love. The drama attempts to tackle too many issues and loses its way while attempting to fix one stereotype too many. Saved by the lead cast who carries us through the 8 episodes effortlessly, this stylish drama is still very much worth a watch for its honest attempt and good intentions.
Operation Finale (2018)
Good only in parts.
Ben Kingsley is the only outstanding part of this film. Great visual direction, but the film struggles to hold your attention. Over dramatization ends up slightly trivialising the Holocaust, in what could've been a great film.
Naksha (2006)
A goof. Gets a F-
I think I should phone the director and ask him to re-release this movie and advertise it heavily as the funniest comedy of the year. I actually believe that it might catch more attention and gain revenue.
It started downhill and kept going down from there until the last scene where I wanted to see some nice CGI, when Jackie wears the armor. But Sunny Deol - ah, and Vivek Oberoi, so gay that he would make my gay friend ashamed of his sexuality.
And last, and pretty much the least, the director must commit suicide by hammering pins in his own brain. J/k.
Undertrial (2007)
Moving but weak
A real life story about a man accused of rape of his 3 daughters. Although some viewers might find the film too dark for their liking, but its worth the watch.
Rajpal Yadav playing the lead role is brilliant! If someone thought he was only good for comic roles, they need to watch this movie. Through minimalist dialogue, he acts with great expression, dark, mysterious, happy, in pain, fear - its a treat to watch.
The main female protagonist did some crazy acting too. Oldie Kader Khan is a classic while Prem Chopra is decent. I found one of the daughters pretty hot too.
Now the bad part - its the director's debut, so its a typical bollywood 90's directing. Slow start, overdone dialogues at times, few scenes going over the top, there are some flaws. No post-production happened, I guess cause of the low budget. If Mani Ratnam directed it, it could win a damn Oscar. Watch it!
