Bang Bang (I) (2014)
4/10
Just watch the Original Knight & Day again!
2 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
When Bollywood filmmakers remake a Hollywood film, I wish they would stick to the same duration too! Bang Bang is the Indian remake of Knight and Day, which as far as I remember, was about 110 minutes but the running time of Bang Bang is 156 minutes! For a film with no head or tail, that's quite long!

Harleen (Katrina Kaif) is a bank receptionist who lives with her grand mom-an enthusiastic woman who enters the bathroom when Harleen is having a shower to ask her why she has no boyfriends. Bored with her life, Harleen signs up for a blind date on a website. Enter trigger-happy thief Rajveer (Hrithik Roshan). He has robbed the Kohinoor from London, no less! Since her blind date has not turned up, Rajveer takes over and charms her.

Of course there are people gunning for him because he has the Kohinoor and then starts the non-sense chase, which goes on till the end of the film. Since Harleen was spotted with him, she is in danger too so he has to take care of her and himself. So she will tag along everywhere he goes. While they are in danger they go from one place to another and also make time to sing a song at every fancy location.

There are some terrible brand placements here like Mountain Dew-the hero of the film was made to drink it; he also had to say the tag line loud and clear, Dar ke aage jeet hai!

The makers have obviously pumped in a lot of money here. From shooting in various places from Shimla to Abu Dhabi to Greece. The actors are seen using every mode of transport from speeding bikes, formula one cars, speed boat and even sea planes. If all this could make the film entertaining, the whopping budget would have been worth. There is a difference between spending money and wasting it. Apart from the rooftop jumping in Shimla, no action scene impressed me much. Teaser trailer had more BANG than the movie.

Hrithik Roshan looks good and that's nothing new but don't expect any great acting here since he was just expected to run from one place to the other. Katrina Kaif was given a silly role and there was little she could do about it. Music by Vishal Shekhar is average. Only "Meherbaan" was the song that gave the full feel of what the movie should have been. And about the background score, just one word- BAD!

If your idea of a fun film is watching two good looking stars running around senselessly for two hours and thirty minutes then go and watch Bang Bang.

The makers have put in a lot of money. Is it wasted or well spent, only time will tell. I would suggest you save your hard earned money and watch Bang Bang on TV someday soon. That might be more satisfying. [2/5]

Finding Fanny (2014)
8/10
Just Find a theatre to watch this fantastic movie :-)
12 September 2014
Finding Fanny [4/5]

When love doesn't come knocking on your door, you go knock on its door. Out of all the valuable lessons that Finding Fanny teaches you, this one is worth taking home! Finding Fanny is the story of Angie, (Deepika Padukone) the widow of Garbo (Ranveer Singh) who stays with her mother-in- law Rosie Eucharistica (Dimple), another widow. Angie believes that no one deserves an incomplete love story, so she sets out on a road trip with her mother-in-law, her friend Savio (Arjun Kapoor), the famous painter Don Pedro (Pankaj Kapoor) and Freddi (Naseeruddin Shah) to help find Freddi's long lost love, Stephanie Fernandes.

The first half of the movie is very entertaining. Goa looks a lot more beautiful than what we have usually seen. The cinematographer is nothing short of brilliant! From the look of its trailer, Finding Fanny seems to be a comedy, it's not just that, it's a lot more.

The second half of the movie seems to go by a lot faster than the first half and is filled with some very unexpected turn of events that leave you shocked and amused at the same time! The movie inspires you to act and seek out whatever it is that you want, instead of waiting for it to come by. By the end of the movie, you'll manage to smile through your tears.

Whether you like this movie or not depends hugely on your taste. If you have been a lover of commercial cinema like Chennai Express or Kick, Finding Fanny might not interest you that much. But if you have a taste for diverse cinema, Finding Fanny is the right pick for your palette.

All actors have done a fabulous job. My favourite of the five is Pankaj Kapoor, who didn't even had a necessary role as per screenplay, is just OUTSTANDING! Naseerudin Shah is very lovable and cute. Deepika is also good but she shines in narrating the story. Arjun Kapoor is revelation. He should try more roles like this. And finally, Dimple Kapadia. She should be applauded for accepting such kinda role that not everyone can play and she is fantastic.

Background score is very good. And finally, the immensely talented director, Homi Adjania deserves the maximum credit for what he has delivered. One needs to be very creative in order to tell a dark and emotional story in an entertaining way. And he does a fab job. Finding Fanny is the best movie Bollywood has produced this year since QUEEN! Highly recommended :-) [4/5]

RAJA NATWARLAL: "A movie that had good potential fails to make a solid impression!" [2.5/5]

Emraan Hashmi returns to the BIG screen after last year's GHANCHAKKAR. Before I begin reviewing I must say that he likes signing in for the movies that are promising and has potential to deliver something new and different. This one too is & it's worth appreciating. But the problem lies in how the movie is handled.

Anyways, the story is about Raja, who is a small time conman who gets his partner killed in an attempt to break into the big league. Then to avenge this death he seeks out a bigger retired conman to help him. Together they hatch a plan to steal the rich guy's money so that Raja can marry his bar dancer sweetheart and avenge the death in one swoop.

The story at its core is OK and the little clever touches of con games are funny and entertaining at times. However, neither the characters nor their motivations are strong enough for us to root for either the conman or the rich cricket crazy dude getting conned. You are indifferent to their fates and that is totally dangerous in a movie which depends on your liking the con guy to make the story work. To make matters worse there is the romantic angle which just doesn't work and which pulls the narrative down in its best parts with some soppy songs and unnecessary kisses.

The star cast is great- Emraan as Raja, Paresh Rawal as the master con and Kay Kay Menon as the rich guy are all great actors and their chemistry makes the movie extremely watchable in parts. They manage to create a good feeling of tension in a few crucial scenes. New actress , Pakistani import Humaima Malik is too thin to register on screen and the only way you can tell she is there is when there is some spangly costume floating about on the screen. I was nice to see Deepak Tijori again on screen looking older and better without his old funny hairstyle.

Raja Natwarlal could have been infinitely smarter, funnier and way more taut given the story it was working with and the star cast. Instead what we get is patchy pieces of good action, silly songs and a storytelling session as we are tucked into bed(meant for some excessive runtime) Anyhow, watchable it is. [2.5/5]

Ajay Devgn is the sole reason to watch Singham Returns
17 August 2014
Warning: Spoilers
In 2011, Singham came, roared and captured many hearts & a lot was expected from this super-cop as he came out of his den yet again with Singham Returns. Unfortunately, despite Ajay Devgn's immense efforts, it ended up being a disappointing & confused action thriller. For me, the main spoiler was Kareena Kapoor with her over- energetic and over-enthusiastic portrayal.

The plot starts with a police constable being found dead along with an enormous sum of money and is later on charged of being corrupt. The now DCP Singham, discovers the conspiracy behind it and also its masterminds who then kill Singham's mentor and a noble politician, Guruji. How Singham tackles these gundas and once again saves the state is the story that follows.

Rohit Shetty tries really hard to make the sequel grand by inducing more power politics, more singham powers, more big actors, more nonsensical comedy, more over the top action, more save the country philosophy, more social messages ,more media, more glamour & definitely more 'Cars' but it's nothing more than a failed over- ambitious attempt.

He overdid a lot of Singham elements especially Aata Majhi Satakli which kept repeating in every ten minutes. However, the quality of film-making surely improved for Rohit. The way Singham Returns was shot was very vibrant and appealing to the eyes. The Rohit Shetty crew really deserves all the credit to take his technical skills a level up.

The movie's runtime was almost two and a half hours which seems way too long - bad piece of work from the editor. The scope for cutting down illogical Kareena Kapoor scenes was enormous.

An alternate name for the movie could easily have been Cars Return. The movie starts with a car show and ends with a car show. And in every possible action scene you see cars flying, colliding, bombing, crashing and what not. Also , to my amaze, the central minister's car is not bullet proof nowadays. To top it all, the 'DCP' Singham now drives a 'pink' coloured 'Zen Estilo' instead of his usual and more manly Scorpio. Why Singham Why?

The music is average and there is no exceptional song that just makes you go wow! Though Aata Majhi Satakli is catchy, I find it really shitty and irritating with all those crab hands. This music album didn't really work out for Meet Bros Anjjan.

As I kept watching the movie, I Just realized that its only Ajay Devgn who can totally pull off a Singham and the sole reason for it is his intensity which cannot be matched by any of his counterparts. His eyes are just enough to make you believe that a super-cop like Singham could exist and his voice and delivery makes ordinary dialogues look real classy. If Singham works for me, it is only Ajay who makes it happen.

As much as Ajay was brilliant in his portrayal, Kareena was dreadfully irritating as Avni. This was perhaps the most over-acting done by her after Main Prem Ki Deewani Hun. Probably If she would not have been in the movie, I would have given it an extra star. I know I am being harsh, but seriously, I just can't help it.

Amol gupte really tried hard to do a Prakash Raj but failed terribly. He was far from menacing and his caricatured character made it worse. Also, the Amercian Dasiyan never really helped. Dayanand Shetty aka Daya is Daya, Cut-Copy-Paste from C.I.D. There is also a special sequence where Singham order Daya- Daya Darwaza Tod. Ashwini Kalsekar did okay playing the stereotypical media journalist rather a Barkha Dutt copy. Zakir Hussain is average and offers nothing different or new. Anupam Kher is average in his short and very predictable character. Mahesh Manjrekar suits perfectly in his role of the righteous politician. Sameer Dharmadhikari, Pankaj Tripathi have been poorly utilized. A special mention to the actress who played the dead police constable's wife had a sequence with Ajay Devgn in which she was amazing. Also, Ashok Saraf (from Singham 1) too was missed.

In all, Singham Returns is yet again a Ajay Devgn show but this time with no one there to support him.

A relief for Sajid Khan; Competitor for Humshakals! Very Bad. Avoid.
8 August 2014
ENTERTAINMENT: "SIMPLY ZERO ENTERTAINMENT; SAVE YOUR BUCKS" (0.5/5)

I just want to keep the review shortest as possible because the heavy headache after watching this outrageously stupid movie ain't stepping out! 1st thing- The trailer was not so bad. Plus, I expected something good from Mr.Kumar in comic genre since his last few outings had been ridiculous (Baring Special 26 & the decent Holiday). But, I am completely blown away. What the hell?, oh no, let me correct; Why the hell he signs movies like this? I have lost my trust on him.

The movie is completely trashy. It can compete well with Humshakals and definitely be on top worst movies of Akshay.

The Gags (no LOL moment. Even you can't smile properly) are very bad. Even the scenes looked stretched because they bore you down badly. Krushna starts very early in the movie with his one liners and starts in a bearable way but by the end, it gets so much annoying that you just wanna move out of the theater.

Just for the sake of reviewing here and at least trying to save your hard earned money, I watched it till the very last song in the credits. Otherwise I had a very strong urge many times to just leave this torturous movie.

The music is poor. JOHNNY- JOHNNY too sounded very bad with the flow of the movie.

Performances are no doubt worse. Must say, Johnny lever was best of the lot accompanied with the Smart Dog- Junior.

I just don't wanna review further. It sucked badly. Also, the movie ain't for family audience. Vulgar and cheap jokes too included. My Friday gone bad.

Anyways, Guardians of the Galaxy awaits to be watched tonight.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS NON-SENSE ENTERTAINMENT COZ IT NEVER LIVES UP TO IT'S TITLE. (0.5/5)

Kick (2014)

Dhoom:4 with Salman Khan
27 July 2014
After a series of Bad movies (real bad) except the decent EK tha Tiger, this one is a kick for the Dabangg khan to uplift his falling career. Honestly, I had almost Zero expectations. The trailer was also not very exciting and my presumption about the moving having no story stood 100% correct. 4 writers credited(even including Chetan Bhagat), but what you get is inconsistent & and an incoherent screenplay.

There are snatches of Batman, Zorro, Dabangg, Aks, Bodyguard & Especially Dhoom:3. In fact many from it. But where Dhoom:3 failed miserably to deliver any kinda Fun, Kick does it right. It's moreover a Dhoom 3 done right. Salman is Outstanding. He plays himself. Like the dialog-"Main Dil main aata hun, samajh main nahin", it's a larger than life character best suited to him. The action(though very less) was brilliant. Considering its a Bollywood movie, the production values were superb. Especially a chase sequence in Poland looked spectacular. Songs are decent with good presentation. Among the rest, almost everyone performed hammy yet amazing.

Randeep Hooda did what Abhishek Bachchan should do in a better way, Jacqueline Fernandis too was impressive. It was Nuwazuddin Siddique in the second half who took the maximum claps with a superb performance. He was notches higher in scenes with Salman.

The cinematography deserves special mention. It was fab and a bit artful!

Overall, despite its flaws, lack of logics, zero story, and some exceeded runtime, Kick does succeeds in providing decent entertainment. A good Eid-flick. Extremely Watchable. And that extra 0.5 is for Salman and his dancing. LOL!

Attempt of Rejuvenation!
26 June 2014
TRANSFORMERS: Age of Extinction (3/5)

Michael Bay always succeeds in surprising me with a new Brand of special effects. And with the 4th installment he raises the bar even more than the previous Dark of the Moon. Also to his capability, he hooks you throughout the movie(Despite the excessive runtime) with just visuals itself.

But, like always, the plot is weak......and this time it's hammy acting that irritates. Simply ZERO emotional quotient. I never cared for any character. The Robots were fascinating though. Especially Galvatron and Lockdown. Bumblebee was cut short but good and Optimus rocked!

Other flaws include forgettable soundtrack, bad editing(30 minutes were absolute waste) and the excessive and somewhat repetitive action in the climax staged at Hong Kong. It never overpowered the thrilling Clash at Chicago of T3.

The screenplay was inconsistent. At one moment, you are blown away with the spectacular cinematography & action, but just the other one bores you badly. This venture continued till the end.

Still, at last I will recommend watching T4. The end promises for something great to come i.e very much awaited since the first installment.

Very Watchable. (3/5)

Bryan Singer's emphatic comeback
23 May 2014
DAYS OF FUTURE PAST is the best x men movie, or say at par with X:2 & First class. Thanks to Bryan Singer, who again does a brilliant job in stuffing the entire x men universe. There are a few minor flaws and as expected some under utilized characters. Especially Halle Berry's STORM. But it didn't bothered much since there is truckload of masterclass actors and actresses. Peter Dinklage having blast, Sir Ian McKellen & Patrick Stewart sharing screen together again, James McCoy & Michael Fassbander's rock solid chemistry, Superb Jennifer Lawrence in dynamic action, SCENE STEALING EVAN PETER's Quicksilver (I wished for more of him), and Hugh Jackman's cut short action but acting avatar which was great and suitable. There are more actors who does a fabulous job but the mentioned guys were the most enjoyable of the entire lot. This is the darkest x men movie, even more than the last year's WOLVERINE and it has a solid emotional core attached to it. The time travel plot and the differences between the mutants is executed flawlessly. Visual effects are top-notch but 3D doesn't adds much depth. Background score is fine. On the whole, FUTURE PAST is Great, memorable and a lot enjoyable! Must - watch. 4.5/5

Note:- "Their is one after credits scene".

Kai Po Che (2013)

Kai po che
23 February 2013
kai po che.. Heard the title few months ago and was crazy to watch it since i got to know that its been directed by abhishek kapoor, rock on fame, and its having sushant in the movie + its based on chetan bhagat's 3 mistakes of my life.. Woww. And now, after watching the movie, i can definitely say that what i was hoping for is been fulfilled since the movie is really amazing but a little less than outstanding mainly coz of a slow 2nd half, and that too for a few time. But the positive points are: First grade cinematography, mesmerising music, lovely script, very good direction and brilliant performances. Sushant as expected was the best of all the cast and delivered a stealing performance. Very less movies comes in a year that touches your heart and this one is that type of cinema only that achieves this goal. Go all the way for kai po che.. But skip if slice of life films are not your cup of tea.
