The Last Thing He Wanted (2020)
Yuck!
This is a confusing, depressing movie. Like other viewers, I feel like I wasted 2 hours of my time. This is full of cynical dialogue and multiple betrayals with those betrayed usually ending up also being killed. Aflac is a government operative of some kind who ends up killing Hathaway, who was trying to reconnect with the daughter she loved, a day or 2 after he slept with her. Hers was a noble, tragic character. The acting is pretty good for the most part, with a particular nod to Willem Dafoe, who is always interesting
The movie is set in Central America which is portrayed as a primitive, violent place. Government officials, without exception are duplicitous. I felt like I wanted to take a shower after watching this. Don't waste your time!
The Bourne Legacy (2012)
LOVE IT!
This is probably the most exciting action movie I've ever seen! The action is virtually nonstop. There is a lengthy motorcycle chase through Manila, Philippines that will have you on the edge of your seat. As you probably know, Jeremy Renner plays a character similar to Matt Damon's Jason Bourne, i.e. A covert agent. The movie starts with some of the most beautiful scenery I've ever seen which was shot in the Canadian Rockies. Evil government officials chase Aaron all over the world trying to eliminate him.
The lovely Rachel Weisz does a wonderful job with the part she is asked to play. I haven't watched the Matt Damon Bourne movies for some time, but I think I like this one better. I'm glad I caught this before Netflix deletes it April 30th.
The Pale Blue Eye (2022)
Not Bad!
I gather that most of the reviewers really like this movie. I thought it fairly good. It was plodding during the middle two thirds. The scenery was dark and depressing (upper New York state in the winter). Red herrings are thrown in (the requisite Ivy League secret frat boy society), and only the ending is much of a surprise. I thought Christian Bale sailed through the role as though he were on tranquilizers. The redoubtable Gillian Anderson has a minor role in the movie but is virtually unrecognizable in heavy makeup and costume.
The real star of the show is the young British man Harry Melling, who I had never seen before; he steals the show. His depiction of Edgar Allan Poe is masterful. He captures Poe's appearance likely to a T. My favorite part of the Pale Blue Eye is the language, particularly as spoken by Poe who is wonderfully eloquent!
My favorite part of this movie is being introduced to Harry Melling whom I will watch a lot more of!
The Sinner (2017)
Third season is a big disappointment!
I thought that the first season of the SINNER (with Jessica Biel) was quite good. The second one was pretty good though not as interesting as the first. The third season, however, was a huge disappointment to me-- dark, slow, and boring. It would've been better with three fewer episodes.
The entire season revolved around the detective pursuing this narcissistic sociopath Jamie. Jamie and his mentor spent the entire season spouting new age, nihilistic philosophy and acting in self-destructive ways along with it. Detective Harry blurred professional boundaries with this man. Apparently, their pathologies meshed somehow. Harry appears to be a socially awkward, almost schizoid individual who has a hard time following rules, including those of the police department.
The third season burned me out so much that the show should end, as far as I'm concerned.
