Halo 4 (2012 Video Game)

Great game
21 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
As a die hard Playstation owner, and bit of a fanboy, I decided to turn to the dark side and buy the XBox X. I've been busy playing every Halo game on Gamepass and I love the series and the story. Reach seems to get the most praise and it does deserve it, but for me Halo 4 was the best up to now. Watching the degradation of Cortana and her struggle to stay lucid was heart wrenching. Master Chief, despite coming over as quite cold a lot of the time was having a hard time dealing with it.

I wish I bought an XBox a long time ago. It's a great machine, I give both the PS and XBox 10/10 for quality.

So don't let silly Fanboyism stop you from trying the competition.

Highly recommended

I'm stunned they made this movie for $26 million.

I think it must be the only film I know of that covers four theatres of WW2 in the allotted time. Japan/China, Japan/Russia, Russia/Germany, and Germany/Allies.

Really good plot about a rivalry that turns to hatred, and the adversities the protagonists find themselves in.

Special effects were on point for a $100 million movie which is partly why I'm gobsmacked.

Acting was excellent and hit me in the feels many times.

I believe to this day there is some (a lot) animosity between South Korea and Japan at the social level so this is an important film I think.

Really enjoyable action movie with good acting and special effects. Never a dull moment. If you're looking for historically correct movies then this does not fit the bill, as said, it's an action movie set in WW2.

With Hollywood turning out so many social justice lectures rather than entertainment it has now become necessary to broaden one's entertainment horizons much more widely. This has proven as a positive (to me at least) and it's great to finally discover so many great films to watch from overseas from so many talented actors and directors.

Next on my list, My Way (2011) from Korea, it looks great.

Not film worthy
10 October 2022
This is adapted from a short story, and you can tell. This would have been better suited to a 30 or 40 minute Black Mirror episode, or a compilation of Stephen King short stories adapted to screen rather than a standalone movie running at 1hr 40m. There just isn't enough substance and energy there to keep up any tension or torque and so it comes over rather diluted and disappointing by the end.

Donald Sutherland is well cast as the jaded and somewhat bitter financier. Still rolling out films at nearly 90 is great to see; a strong presence amongst a cast of unknowns.

It's certainly worth a watch, just don't expect too much from it.

Not very good at all
26 August 2022
An opportunity was missed here. It's very patchy, disjointed, incoherent at times, and inaccurate. And the hip hop? Surely Elvis' discography was extensive enough to offer a wide choice for the soundtrack?

Tom hanks. I'm a big fan of his, but this was the worst role that I've ever seen him in. Just terrible.

I just don't understand what Luhrmann was going for or how he could stand back and call this a good effort.

Also, why did Luhrmann put his name as the writer..twice, in the credits. Ego much.

Very good
21 August 2022
I'm anti-woke too. All the reviews that state that this is more of the woke narrative, about a woman going up against impossible odds and winning have clearly never heard of Queen Boudicca, Joan of Ark, Tomoe Gozen, and of course, the fictional character Ellen Ripley.

This was a well structured film, well directed, and clearly based on a Comanche female that refused to stay home and do the dishes. They did exist.

Well worth a watch, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Chinese Propaganda
18 June 2022
As an Englishman I have to say that this was unapologetically anti-US. If this was not bought, paid for and produced by the PRC then it's certainly something they would be immensely proud of.

I think they spent 40 minutes focusing on the Bravo nuclear tests in the Pacific 70 years ago, and the sins involved with displacing people, or 'experimenting' on them, yet spend 40 seconds lightly talking about Tiananmen square. I guess the PRC conceded that if they wanted an anti-US propaganda film then they would have to allow a few minutes of lightly slapping China on the wrist.

No mention of the 80 million dead Chinese due to the Great Leap Forward.

John Pilger is a very useful Chinese stooge, and I'm sure he was compensated handsomely for this travesty.

Better
5 June 2022
The 1984 version was such a confusing mess it almost put me off watching the 2021 version. However, this new interpretation is far superior in every way. The visuals are stunning, the plot is coherent, the acting is excellent.

I'm eagerly awaiting the 2nd part to this series.

How it's done
19 May 2022
How Di Caprio didn't get an Oscar is beyond me. I can only imagine they didn't want to give it to a kid. Mind you, they gave an Oscar to Tatum O'Neal at 10yrs old.

Fantastic feel good film, thoroughly enjoyed it. Up there with Stand by Me.

A worthy watch
19 March 2022
As a cold hearted SOB it's extremely rare to find a film that hits me in the feels, but this one certainly did. Well written and executed and fantastic child actors. This is up there with some of the best war films in my opinion.

The Power of the Banal
17 February 2022
Same type of movie as Saint Maud, The Quiet Ones, or Capone. Nothing happens.

People claim it has tension. It doesn't.

People say it is breathtakingly beautiful. Not really, it takes place in one place and there's really nothing exceptional about it.

People say it's a psychological Drama. Nope. More depth in a Mills & Boon novel, and there is zero drama.

What it is is one of those movies that bring out the arty, pretentious movie goer that always gush over movies where nothing happens because they like to pretend to have seen something you missed, that they're somehow deeper than you. Usually have beards, and hang out in Starbucks.

Cliff notes

This is really just a high level overview of each case. If you're a crime buff then you likely know all these cases and know far more details than you'll find in this series.

Fascinating
6 February 2022
I think the most fascinating part of this story is that of Cecilie Fjellhøy. 1,500 Tinder men scrolled through, lots of dates, and the one man she happens to fall in love with within 5 seconds happens to be a billionaire. I mean, what are the odds of that happening!

My first foreign film black comedy (excluding Norsemen). All the more funny because it looked like Bill Burr trying to murder his wife. Definitely worth a watch, you won't be disappointed.

Ridiculous

Have you seen the film Tucker and Dale vs Evil? That's exactly the plot without the humour. Absolutely nothing like the first Wrong Turn.

Only giving it a 2 as I've seen worse films.

Plotless
9 October 2021
Zero plot in the film. If you know someone who has watched it, ask them what the plot was. You'll see what I mean. Not the worst horror, but definitely near the bottom. Nothing scary that you haven't seen before. Only giving it 2 because I've seen worse.

More plot holes than a British road
9 October 2021
I've only watched this film 97 times, 96 times as a kid, and once as an adult. Only watching it as an adult did the plot holes stand out. Despite that, it's a really fun film to watch, and has stood the test of time very well for an action film.

Yes, it's sexist in places, but it's also not very sophisticated by today's standards. Let's be honest, the modern James Bonds take themselves far too seriously. A solid entertaining movie.

At least we have You only Live Twice.

Daniel Craig was the worst Bond of all. Zero charm, zero panache, zero sense of humour.

Terribly boring
4 June 2021
There's ways of dealing with this subject without boring the audience to tears. Absolutely nothing happen until the last 8 minutes. A competent director wouldn't need 1:12 minutes to set the scene for the last few minutes.

Watch Four Lions instead. Same subject, done well, entertaining throughout.

Awful
1 May 2021
One of those films where you want everyone to die.

Biggest plot hole, who smuggled him inside the panel. That goes completely unaddressed.

Gravity is upside down most of the time. Centripetal force pulls everything to the "floor" of the ship, yet these guys spend most of their time sitting on the "ceiling" of the ship.

Zoe is annoying, and prepared for everyone to in an attempt to save one man. The Commander lets her. The only sane one was Daniel, who was able to do the math, and make the tough decisions.

More
23 March 2021
The UK need to make more films on it's history. It's history is some of the richest in the world, and yet we leave it to Americans to make tell the stories of WW1 and WW2 (as two example)

Plotless and plodding. No reminiscing, no flashbacks, no story, no point. Unless you fancy watching an incoherent old person deteriorate and die, skip it.

Full of untruths and deceptions. Watch Christopher Hitchens analysis on Michael Moore, and you'll see him take apart this film and Moore easily.

Stood the test of time well
3 November 2020
Rewatching this after 25 years. Incredible that it's been that long. For good reason though, Discovery is so bad that one has to go back to the good old days of Star Trek to get your fix. What I particularly appreciate this time around is The Doctor, Robert Picardo's character. The way Picardo developed him was truly brilliant. From a flat, plain person, to a full bodied character. Very well done. This series was slated back in the day, especially for nerfing the Borg, but I can forgive that, especially in light that Discovery is woke beyond ridiculous.

Annoying
24 October 2020
This one really annoyed me, specifically Lily James. Her character started out as fairly likeable, if a little vapid. The character then quickly changed into an annoying nervous, timid, gutless Lady of the house that played second fiddle to the servants. Then in the last 20 minutes, she turned into a decisive, strong and leading woman. I've not read the book, but I strongly doubt that's how the character would have been written. Kristin Scott Thomas gave the best performance of all.
