Robert De Niro in The Deer Hunter
3 December 2004
I love the Deer Hunter mainly because of Robert De Niro's fantastic performance in it.

His character Mikey shows such grit whilst in action in Vietnam - during the horrific Russian Roulette sequence he is the one who holds the group together. Then, on the flip side of the coin, he shows such vulnerability when he is away from the war and struggling to deal with 'ordinary' life. His performance whilst in the hotel room when he has returned home is so powerful - he just can't stop the emotions within him from breaking out. But Mikey has no one to help him get through it and he is left sobbing in an empty room. I was stunned when I first saw this - it's amazing.

It may not have all the blood, guts, gore, etc.. that many other Vietnam movies have but it is all the more powerful for not taking the obvious route.

Robert De Niro was fantastic in Raging Bull, but he should have got an Oscar for this one too.

Superb film with a fantastic Vivien Leigh
3 December 2004
I just love this film!

Vivien Leigh just looks radiant throughout it and I think this, for me, is her best performance ever. (yes, even over Scarlett O'Hara, no less!!)

Such a sad and poignant story and told with such style and acted so well.

Can't fault it really.

Girls, you HAVE to see this film. Boys, if you want to get real kudos with your lady/partner/wife etc...this is the film to get!

There's a romantic in all of us.

The Heiress (1949)
Fantastic Film, fantastic Olivia!
3 December 2004
I saw this film about 10 years ago and have never forgotten it. Why it is not available on DVD - I just don't understand it.

Olivia de Havilland is heart-breaking as the woman who is so badly treated by her suitors and her father. I felt the portrayal of her father and the cruel way he treats her was so well played out and you could see how her soul is slowly being crushed.

I was so amazed and touched by the film, I went and got the book it is based on, Henry James' Washington Square. It was superb but nothing will make me forget the look on Olivia De Havilland's face at the end of the movie where you can see her features harden and all her youthful sweetness is gone.

Brilliant film!

Chasing Amy (1997)
My thoughts on Chasing Amy
3 December 2004
I just re-watched Chasing Amy this evening and thought I would post my feelings about it for the dicerning readers of the IMDb!! I love Kevin Smith movies and this film would be one of my favourites of all time...but.... Whilst it is funny and the characters are great and witty, it doesn't quite 'gel' for me. I find Joey's character just too overbearing and selfish - the only characters I could really enjoy were the Ben Affleck/Jason Lee, who as usual are on top form. I love the whole message of the film about insecurity in relationships etc...but I just don't find the relationship between Joey/Ben works for me. I think it's possibly because I also just watched Mallrats and the two are very different beasts!!!

:-)
