The Retreat (I) (2020)

It was okay...but...
10 March 2021
We thought this movie was pretty good. Two cool dude buddies having a "bachelor party" 3-day hike in the snowy Anirondacks, with interference from a ghastly creature. If you watch it, you need to pay attention because of all the flash backs. We gave it only 6 stars because we were totally engaged until the final scene which was incredibly disappointing. We enjoyed the acting and the story a lot.

Parts are offensive
18 February 2021
This movie verges on totally offensive depicting Thai people as ruthless, devious, and violent. Certainly makes me want to stay away. The female lead is Asian and her would-be rescuer is a white guy. smh If you're interested in watching this stinker, don't bother. Its just not worth wasting an hour and a half.

Did they intend to make a comedy?
28 January 2021
This movie is so ridiculous so we stayed with it for the laughs. For instance, the dad makes a little speech to the son as they're crawling up the mountain that he'd always protect the son and never let anything happen to him and at that moment the son is hit head-on in the face with a softball-size rock. Silly as all get-out.

The Stand (2020–2021)

So disappointed
10 January 2021
I was hoping that his series would be better than the earlier mini-series, but I think this was isn't as good. I'm very disappointed with the casting particularly Frannie and Nadine Cross. The jumping back and forth is confusing and screws up the continuity. The Stand is a very detailed book and I realize that any series could not be exactly like the book but it would have been nice if at least some of it could have been.

The Mystery of a Hansom Cab (2012 TV Movie)

A nice quiet mystery
27 October 2020
I enjoyed this movie very much. The acting was solid and the story was well told. It may be slow for some and if you're a cynic you probably won't enjoy it. I was particularly pleased with Margaret (also called Madge) as she was independent and tough and did not shrink under pressure from the men around her. There were definite cliches but there were also moments that I thought were going to turn into cliches that went in a different direction. It was a pleasant surprise and I'm really glad I watched it.

Really bad movie with great cast
4 October 2020
We went into this movie excited about the great cast - Billy Bob Thorton, Thomas Jane, James Marsden, and Adam Beach, as well as Scott Glenn. The back story for the brothers, Jane & Marsden was not fleshed out at all and the romantic relationship between Marsden and Michaela McManus was not only a mystery but also unnecessary for the story. The brothers end up with two woman on their hunt to find the man-eating grizzly. A sad waste of some really great talent. I hope the paycheck was good for everyone involved. An extra star for the casting agent.

Terrible movie
30 April 2017
I absolutely love movies but this one really put me to the test. I tried to find something to like but was not successful - it could have been really good movie - good cast, promising story-line, but no...undeveloped, disjointed, and scenes that made no sense. What a colossal waste of time.

Pay the Ghost (2015)

Disappointing
22 January 2016
Occasionally we find an unknown and really good "little" movie and that's what we hoped for Pay the Ghost. The scares were good, but the story was thin. There was a gratuitous death of a side character unrelated to the story that I didn't appreciate. The climatic scene was sort of Disney mixed with "Ghost" and could have been done better. I can suspend belief through some really thin stories (and do when the story makes sense), but in this case, it was too much. At least Nic Cage did an okay job as the dad. The direction and camera work was good and the makeup was really good. I really liked the carnival scene. If the story had been stronger with more thought, this would have been a good movie.

Beautiful
6 April 2007
This movie is beautiful with an excellent ensemble cast. I loved the scene where the staff listened to Ivor sing - hiding, silently dancing... I also liked the intimacy that we shared with both the domestic staff and the aristocracy portrayed in this film - it was gossipy and sympathetic at the same time. We learn that people are people regardless of social status - they just have different responsibilities. I always enjoy Clive Owen and Helen Mirren. The addition of a crass American movie maker to the English weekend was funny. The death of the host was incidental to the goings-on of each of the guests. Money needs, affection needs, connection needs - each represented what we all strive to attain - but this movie represents it with the stiff upper lip that ever propels the English. Great...

No Hollywood Here
6 January 2007
My husband and I drove to Atlanta from our home in Western NC to see this movie because of an advance review that we read in the Washington Post as well as a trailer that we saw in October. The movie was definitely worth the drive. Clive Owen portrays an ordinary man with an extraordinary commitment to a person he'd never met before. One of the things that struck us was the lack of Hollywood clichés. There was enough humor to balance the horror and enough beauty to counter the bleakness. Michael Caine was simply great. At the end of the film we stayed for the credits and to give ourselves a chance to be quiet for a few minutes. We noticed that a lot of others did the same. Today we watched the movie for a second and final time with our 17-year old son. He had the same reaction that we did - silence and reflection. This is a great movie...
