I loved the good songs
4 April 2008
This movie is a bunch of beautifully pictured songs connected by simple moments of love pain and loss. Nothing spectacular in the story. I loved this movie because it entertained and moved me. Sad as my life may seem, I have not heard any of the Beatles songs before I watched this movie. Except a parody of Love is all you need. That made it an even more wonderful experience to me. The ladies who played Sadie and Prudence were fabulous. Sadie rocked me with her amazing voice. Prudence was good with the longing in her eyes. Kudos to the director for her choice of songs and cast.

PS: They could've improved the scenes on Bus with weird singer.

superb play on the big screen
4 December 2007
Wow, i was overcome with Joy after watching a movie like this in South Indian cinema. The whole 2 hour movie consists of only three characters. A professor living in secluded woods invents a drug that could help in fighting Cancer. A lady (Manjula) from a pharmaceutical company comes to buy the rights for this medicine. In the last minute , the prof had to go to near by village. Now she has to wait for the professor, and her company is the Professor's lawyer. They decide to kill time by playing a "Show".

What happens next touches various aspects of human psychology, keeps you busy thinking, makes u laugh, makes u jump to edge of your seat and.... Well, I cant tell u anymore. Please watch the movie.

Surya was awesome as the lawyer. Manjula is decent as the lady visitor. The kudos goes to Neelakanta for the smart screenplay.

Into the Wild (2007)

in search of truth(iness)
9 October 2007
Warning: Spoilers
The protagonist of this beautiful tale does not like his parents. Sure, all parents have problems. Our fellow does not want to be part of the problem, he wishes to understand true form of "Living with nature, the way life was", he wishes to escape all this hypocrisy and the race for riches and luxury, he just wants to BE. After graduating from college he donates all his life savings to charity, burns all his ID cards and starts a journey in search of Identity. His destination is the great Alaska and its pristine beauty.

Along the way we meets various people, does odd jobs, finds glimpses of joy, boundless energy, touches lives spent mourning loss, shares lives spent searching for happiness and meets lives spent "Living". Each one of them is a part of that Jigsaw puzzle our boy is trying to solve. The performance of folks on the road are extremely good, they make us share the bumpy ride, we understand their feelings and care for them. We also get to see the boy's parents in a new light. Its hard not to feel their pain caused by knowing they just might've lost him.

Every week, many of us spend a few hours thinking about life. We all long to escape from this "Routine". What we rarely realize (and this movie reminded me) is that beauty and happiness is everywhere. There is so much of it, that we don't have to "Escape". Its tough to understand what makes people do such seemingly drastic actions in life, take an adventure into the wild for months, live the life of a Hippie, be a nudist, be a rebel or just be different? Do we always have to look for a reason and if things go wrong, should we always have to place the blame ?

The movie is very beautiful and smooth. Acting is good all around, and the background score helps a lot to elevate the mood. I am very impressed by some screen shots, I just wish to take a picture and upload to my Flickr. I highly recommend this movie if u feel that longing... of just any kind. My friend Kesava said this recently..." We cannot explain every person's actions. It would be great injustice if we try and rationalize individuality and self expression". So very true.

Art and society
22 January 2007
I watched it when i was a kid, and was bored to death. I always loved the music of this film, but i could never understand whats happening. After listening to all the praise from so many friends, I rented it again at the age of 22. I am glad I did, this is movie making at its best.

Its much more than classical music. It is about life ingeneral, relation ship between a Guru and his devoted pupil, a young couple who fell in love, a child who steps in to takes up his mothers place ... and many more stories beautifully woven into one wonderful ragamalika.

I would recommend this movie to all

refreshing "Flavors" of life
1 September 2006
OK, I was a bit unhappy seeing a few negative comments about this movie. I wanted to answer them in the small review of mine.

Why is this name flavors -- Not bcos they all meet at a restaurant. But bcos this movie tries to captures different (not all) flavors of NRIs in USA. Why they have funny characters -- The characters are not intended to be funny, U laugh out loud bcos if you know indians u could relate all the characters that you saw in this movie. Its this relation that brings a smile to your face.

I totally loved the movie, and its way better than all the "American-*" movies abt NRIs in India trying to "re-discover" themselves. I can watch this movie a hundred times for the "Parents" and for "sangeetha"

Critics do not like being ridiculed.
22 July 2006
I watched "lady in the water" and liked the movie. I was wondering why the critics hated it, Well, the only reason I can think of is that no one likes to be ridiculed. M Night Shyamalan destroys the image of movie critics in his latest offering, and its quite hilarious to watch :D Back to story, we have a lady "from" the water who is sent to inspire an event in this world. We also have a middle aged and lonely Cleveland Heep ( played superbly by Paul Giamatti) who discovers her and helps her. What would u do, if u are supposed to save a mythological creature, without any knowledge of their world? What follows is funny at times, predictable yet interesting through out , flawed yet entertaining and as scary as my room mates snore. The kid in all of us will enjoy this movie, and forget abt it in a few days. For adults who like mythology, it is an interesting topic for their lunch conversations. It is quite a task to create mythology in a single movie, and Shyamalan made a decent attempt ... good work Shyamalan.

Sorry guys, if u are expecting a scary unpredictable flick like sixth sense, this one is not for u. This one is just as simple as a bedtime story.

simple love story - complex social system
14 September 2005
It is a lovely story about the thin line between love and respect&affection emotion. The story explains the life of a lady respected-adored by a guy whom she loves in return. There is a huge social difference between them. They both face many difficulties in life.

Movie is simple and good. Songs are delight to the ear. The dialogues make you think. The best part is the acting by Chiranjeevi. He proves once again how versatile an actor he is. Do watch it on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Meenakshi seshadri looks like a goddess. Her dancing is a plus.

Music as the language
14 September 2005
He is blind. She cannot speak. How would they communicate?

It is a story that is excellently told, and the language here is Music. Music is used to see the world. Music is used to speak to the world. Even the memories stay on as Music.

The lead role is played decently by Sarvadaman Banerjee. He is decent as the blind flute player. Mun Mun Sen is beautiful as the girl who makes him feel the nature, using her body as the tool. It is Suhasini who steals the show with a moving portrayal of the mute lady, who is deeply in love.

This movie has great music. It is also the first movie of Lyricist Mr.Seetharama Sastry whose name now has this movie as surname. For this movie, he wrote some of the best lyrics in the history of Telugu movies.

delightful movie about importance of Art in life
14 September 2005
The story of a young lady born in a family of classical dancers. The problem is she hates dance. The guy next door wont let her give up the beautiful art which makes her special from the rest of the world. The movie explores different problems they face, and explains different views of the same issue.

Delighted. That was my first reaction after watching the movie. yes , the movie has quite a flaw in cinematized dance sequences. But the movie is totally amazing in the way it conveys the message. The story and screenplay are two pillars supporting this movie, which is decorated by great music. The lyrics of all the songs, are the best I ve heard till date.

One song is a debate between the lady and guy next door, about the importance of saving ones art VS doing what u like. Another compares the dancing lady with the Rain. The third one explains how awesome life can get with art. Awesome lyrics from the great writer Sirivennela.

Superb movie and dialogs.
12 September 2005
It reminds me of "RagingBull" and equals it.

Ron Howard does it again. Some people think he makes movies to win Oscars. So be it, and Let us all hope "Cinderella Man" wins a couple of those Oscars. One for Paul Giamatti, outstanding support acting as Joe and the other for Russel Crowe. For showing us that the Gladiator in him is still alive and fighting. Literally.

There isn't much in the story to say about. It is about a Fighter who never gives up during great depression of USA. He fights back ( with support from Joe and his wife ). And he wins. The movie teaches us a lesson or two without any long speeches. I like this movie for showing how difficult life can be, and how important every piece of bread is.

The boxing scenes are well made. Every time someone got hit, I was saying "Ouch". The cinematography is very good, and gave the feel of 1930s to all of us. It has cool screenplay and excellent dialogs. On the whole it is a Must watch movie.

Funny and inspiring Fairy tale
28 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Iqbal is all about a young village lad in northern India, who eats, sleeps and thinks cricket. His only goal in life is to play for the Indian team. A few obstacles in his path, he is deaf and dumb.. He is poor and cannot afford standard training. His father is not ready to let his son ruin his life in pursuit of a day dream. He does have a few strengths. He can bowl real fast, and has great support from his mother and sister. There is also a village drunkard (ex-bowler for the state team) who will be coaching him. The story here is about how he fights all odds.

While the story sounds very normal and often repeated, it is the taking of the movie that is brilliant. The cinematography is very simple. The rural village setting reminded me of the village where I grew up. The dialogues are witty and realistic without any dose of melodrama/sobs/tears. They seem to be inspired by "The Alchemist". The background score and the song are cool, and flow with the movie. There is no self-pity or "I-am-disabled-sohelp-me" kind of emotion. In fact, his disability ceases to be a factor within 10 minutes of the movie. The movie is very inspiring and entertaining. The acting is first rate. Nagesh Kukunoor (director) makes a good movie about cricket and great movie about "How not to give up what you like?".

We need choice - to be human
26 June 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is very disturbing and tough. When I read through many user reviews about this movie, I was sad that they liked it for the wrong reason. This movie is not about glorifying bullies, it is not about showing funny in-out scenes. I feel it is all about the brain-wash one goes through while watching the movie.

The important thing in the movie is about choice. You cannot convert a person to good, if you don't teach him what is good. You have to expose them to both Good and Evil, and give them a choice to Pick the Good from Evil. The movie starts of with our 'Brother' Alex raping women, beating up friends and foes with sinister glee. Not everybody likes to be beaten up. Crime begets crime, and he finds himself in Prison, thanks to his equally bad buddies.

He exchanges his prison term for a Brainwash treatment, and loses his ability to enjoy the evil deeds he always liked. They now made him wish for a painless silent death. He has no choice, but to be good. That spoils the whole concept of reform and what we see from there is shocking and disturbing.

Good movie, but not for soft hearted people

Morning Raga - Good Telugu movie in English
16 June 2005
This movie is strictly for people who has an ear for carnatic music and who like simple story telling. Three people are brought together by music in a small village in south India ( East Godavari district i guess ). They later realise they are all fighting the demons of one tragic incident that occurred 20 years ago. They try and help each other through music, and finally overcome their struggles.

Such simple story is shot very beautifully in Konaseema of Andhra Pradesh. The screenplay is fast, editing good, and most importantly the story telling is very simple. There are less/no clichés, emotions are handled without dramatising them. Shabana Azmi and Lillete Dubey are excellent in handling their characters. The youngsters Perizaad Zorabian and Prakash Rao are wonderful with their balanced performances. Perizaad is very beautiful too. And the true hero of the movie is Carnatic Music with beautiful compositions that sounded super cool with fusion music.

The telugudanam is used as a stage to paint the beautiful morning with all its melodious sounds. Balu

Parineeta (2005)

beautiful painting/Song
15 June 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Parineeta starts as a good painting of the rich Kolkata in 1960's. It tells us the story of Lolita(Vidya Balan) who is very strong and honorable woman. While the story is about relationship between Lolita and Shekar(Saif) who grew up together, it is also about Girish (Sanjay Dutt) who is deeply in love with Lolita. The story is intense with many shades of relationship. I cant tell you more without spoilers :)

This movie looks very beautiful (great cinematography). The Calcutta of 1960's is shown very beautifully.References to Elvis, Pandit Nehru, the Steam engine trains, and the Dairy milk of 1960's is all very pleasant. The Aakashvani in the background adds to feel. The acting is good all around with the newcomer Vidya Balan being absolutely stunning. She can act as beautiful as she looks, reminded me of Madhuri at her best. She is well supported by Saif Alikhan and Sunjay Dutt. The editing is good , screenplay elegant and the flow of the movie is like the hoogly after rains. The best part of the movie is its Music, both songs and the background, suits the movie very well. Full marks to Shantanu Moitra. Director shows great promise, and I hope to see many more good movies from him. Special mention to song sung by Chitra ... "Raat Hamari toh, chand ki saheli hai". Absolutely brilliant and soothing.

Piyu Bole , Piya bole, kya ye bole jaanu naa.

Beautiful Sunshine
27 April 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This is one of the best movies I have ever seen. I say this a lot, but may be I should use it less frequently for movies like "Eternal Sunshine". Night 11pm in sunnyvale, feeling totally sleepy, I watched this movie and ended up feeling psenti about life and love. What would you do when an impulsive person you love erases you from her mind. This guy here decides to follow suit, and starts erasing her too. But thats when he realizes, along with the bitter arguments they had, there were many sweet moments they shared. He does not want to lose them, and tries to hide her in his memory. In all those places which she does not belong to, in his loneliness, childhood, even in his humiliation.

{SPOILERS} But when it all ends, they meet again. They fall in love all over again. They realize they are gonna argue, fight and dislike each other all over again. Bcos thats the way they are. But thats OK, bcos Deep inside they know, they are made for each other.

{ END SPOILERS } One has to relate with this movie to like it. One should know the pain, love, rejection and humiliation that we face every day in our life and still live on. We know we are gonna face tough times ... all over again... but thats OK. What do we do then? We enjoy the moment. We move on.

How happy is the blameless Vestal's lot! The world forgetting, by the world forgot Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind!

dance of emotions
14 December 2004
This movie is a gem for two reasons. One, it had popularised the traditional dance forms of India in the telugu speaking land. Two, it is an excellent portrayal of complex emotions like Love, friendship, teacher-student relationship, and above all devotion to art.

When I saw this movie at age of 10, i thought it was boring. Very recently at age of 23 i watched this movie again, and was bowled over by the way Balu and Madhavi are portrayed in the movie. The love and affection between the characters is divine in nature. A must see for all.
