One of the best films ever made
4 November 2022
Fried green tomatoes is without doubt one of finest movies ever to come out of Hollywood. The script is top notch, the cast superb and the production lush and expensive. I've seen it maybe a dozen times now and it never gets old. The gay elements are obviously very subtle considering the era it was made but still present and very poinient. The tackling of racism and the realities of the American south blend beautifully with the overall story. Jessica Tandy is mesmerising, Kathy Bates superb as usual, Mary Stuart Masterson and MLP are fantastic. The film is realistic, engaging and funny when it needs to be. One from the golden age of cinema.

Pretty good

I don't understand the criticisms that Anne Rice would not like this adaptation. If the critics did their research they'd know that Anne died at the end of 2021 and was involved in the production as EP, as was her son who is still involved, so she definitely signed off and apparently wanted aspects that would have been controversial when the film was made included, mainly the gay aspect between Louis and Lestat.

Overall the production quality is high, something we have come to expect from AMC, the acting is also very strong and the script engaging.

I've only seen ep 1, but i'm pretty impressed so far.

In America (2002)

Good but full of anachronisms
22 February 2022
Is it set in 1982 or 2002? Because AIDS was not fatal in 2002, the cocktail treatment was available for at least 5 years then. Also that camcorder would have been pretty expensive in 1982, especially for a poor family.

Reasonably entertaining but stop with the americanisms
6 August 2021
It's reasonably entertaining to watch, although feels super forced in places and too scripted, as other have noted Bourdain this is not. Also Gordon is British, English to be honest, although he claims to be a Scot, that obviously is not the case as anyone can hear, so he needs to stop using American words, it's highly irritating when you hear a European call football "soccer" and a BBQ a grill, stop it Gordon.

Clarkson's Farm (2021– )

Fantastic series, Clarkson has redeemed himself
16 June 2021
To be honest I had low expectations, because both TG and GT were quite frankly pretty banal. I've always liked Clarkson and his brand of caustic wit, albeit not the majority of his politics (brexit aside, he's thankfully a remainer, although fails to criticize his friend "call me dave" for the mess). Here though he really "did a thing" showing that farming is both hard and pretty thankless, people need to realise this and the show really propels that message. Of course there are scripted moments, though they're much less obvious than they could have been. Gerald is hilarious, and Kaleb is a such a breath of fresh air, showing that there are young people in the UK who really have their head screwed on properly, with his drive and work ethic I wouldn't be surprised if he's a millionaire in the not too distant future.

Compared to that awful dross that they made with Hammond and the bloke off mythbusters, this is really good TV. I can only imagine what Amazon is working on with James May, because he's the real talent among the three.

A Teacher (2020)

Good show but silly from a European POV
16 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I'm enjoying the series but watching this from Europe really focuses on the ridiculous puritanical nature of US society. In most of Europe the age of consent varies from 14-16 (Ireland is an outlier at 17), and so called statutory rape is something most people in Europe have never even heard of, it's just not an issue. Yes she would probably have lost her job because he was a student, but that would have been it, the police would never have been involved in this mess. The US needs to get it's priorities in order, prosecuting people for having consensual sex is just mad when you don't even have healthcare, really? Stories like this really bring up the differences in what are seemingly very similar societies.

Entertaining but the details are way off
11 October 2020
Did anyone think to get an English person to sign off on the sets and props? Firstly the accents are false on the UK actors and criminal on the north Americans. English schools do not have flags in classrooms and unless this was some fundamentalist religious school, the teachers would not be priests or be teaching religious nonsense. Americans need to understand we don't really like religion in Europe as a whole, even if we do we certainly keep it quiet. A local policeman would not talk like an Oxford Don and would not drive a Jaguar xj40, those were were traffic police, he might turn up in an Austin metro or a ford fiesta at that time. The total lack of care in regard to athenticity is just lazy and inexcusable.

One of the best things I've ever watched.
29 April 2020
Happy valley is HBO level prestige TV, the acting is top notch, the storylines gripping and tight, and the script superb. This is the kind of TV we expect, but rarely get from UK production.

Exceptional and very entertaining

Warning: Spoilers
The only reason I gave it a 9 is because the episodes are too short, otherwise it's nigh on faultless, plus the baby Yoda is the cutest thing ever.

Better than Breaking Bad
25 August 2019
I didn't think it was possible, but they actually made the spin-off better than the core show. Despite the fact It's so slow and nothing ever really happens in the space of less than 3 episodes, it's just so mindbogglingly compulsive. Of course that's down to the superb script and faultless cast. Quite simply one of the finest TV shows of all time IMHO.

what a load of dross
5 February 2019
Where to start with this one? Terrible, atrocious, convoluted, confusing, poorly scripted, false. Probably one of the worst films I've had the misfortune to watch, it's definitely one where you think "thank god i didn't pay to see this". The people who made this shouldn't be allowed within 50 miles of a film set.
