A harsh reality

This film teaches us that not everything that is colourful on the outside is also pleasant and enjoyable on the inside. In this particular case, budget motels for the extended stay are painted in nice purple colour but the truth behind those doors is rather uncomfortable and many would turn their heads from it. The main character is a girl Moonee who lives there with her mother and has made friends with other kids there. Her mother isn't working and has to find different jobs that will provide her enough money for the rent. Her actions aren't always recommendable and praiseworthy though, but her performance is astonishing.

The only known actor to apear in this film is the majestic Willem Dafoe, the rest of the cast is completely unknown and most of them haven't been acting before. I think that was amazing decision - to have people who 'fit' the role rather than those who can 'act' the role.

It's a significant and human film and I would wholeheartedly recommend it!

Drive (I) (2011)
One very stylish noir film

This film was definitely a refreshment for me. The story itself isn't complicated - there's a heist with bits of love by the side. But the way this story is told is just great. There's some complexity that grips the viewers and makes them exciting about what's coming next. The director gave it his personal touch so it looks very stylish and neon. The characters are very well developed, and even though the main character doesn't say much, we can understand him perfectly and decide whether we'll be on his side or not. And the music is simply mesmerising, just fits the film amazingly.

The main characteristic of this film is its visual style and charisma. The scenes are rich with nicely combined colours, particularly pastel ones, and symmetries are everywhere. Relationships between characters are fantastic and extremely well written. Dialogues are witty and interwined with funny dark humour. Pure brilliance!
