Hell House LLC Origins: The Carmichael Manor (2023)
Nice try...
This is a movie that will definitely scare many. However, if you've watched Deadstream, then you really have nothing to be afraid of here. It's not innovative because the idea is 99% the same as in Deadstream, only Deadstream is much better, more intense, and scarier. Hell House focuses more on building tension with a 'slow burn' approach, rather than on the dynamics and real horror that I prefer. The scenes attempting to create tension are sometimes too long to the point where I even got bored. The final outcome of the movie is not deadly enough and somewhat disappointing for me. But hey, it was nice to see something similar to the brilliant Deadstream, so it's not all bad...
Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)
Scorsese did it
Exciting journey into the heart of mysterious events in the 1920s in northeastern Oklahoma, told through the lens of the Osage tribe and their tragic losses. Scorsese's direction, though typical of him, delicately balances emotions without falling into melodrama or manipulating the audience. It all looks simple and real, at times chillingly realistic in its violent scenes.
Visually, the film doesn't introduce revolutionary elements or experiences, so given its three-and-a-half-hour duration, this achievement can leave a strong impression even at home, without regret for missing the cinema experience.
The ensemble cast shines. Lily Gladstone and Leonardo DiCaprio stand out, alongside the consistently excellent Robert De Niro. Lily delivers such a strong, deeply emotional, and natural performance. DiCaprio masterfully portrays a complex role. His character isn't clearly defined as a hero or a villain, demanding a top-notch performance to stand out, which Leo achieves at a high level. De Niro, a proven master in villainous roles, doesn't disappoint this time either with his brilliant interpretation of a greedy criminal. Considering this, all three Oscar nominations are almost inevitable.
Despite its lengthy runtime, and being a crime drama with very stretched scenes, some may say unnecessarily long, I always found a charming quality in them, even humor... I believe many will see all of this as excessive length, which I didn't feel, unlike 'Oppenheimer,' which runs for three hours and has a more dynamic and faster-paced plot. Additional musical or dialogue accents could elevate this work to a masterpiece, but even without them, this is an exceptionally successful adaptation of a book and a true tragic story. One of the best films of the year? Definitely!
Jûsan-nin no shikaku (2010)
Takashi Mikke!
The first film I watched from Takashi Mikke and I was amazed at what kind of director it is. A great story put together through the great development of the plot, it reminded me a lot of the cult classic "Seven Samurai". The first half of the film is mostly dramatically done, but in a very nice way, although I prefer things like this with more enthusiasm from the very beginning. The work of the camera, as well as the music, was done great, and then... The epic end! Wow what a finale! The action maybe more than half an hour, or so it seemed to me. Brutality expressed enough to satisfy those who love brutally, of whom I am, and it is not too emphasized for normal viewers to be satisfied. To conclude, 13 Assassins is one great achievement and one of the best samurai movies I've watched.
Papillon (1973)
Potencial for much more...
This is a nice story about prison and freedom... This movie could have been much more. Maybe it lacked more emotion, maybe if it had been shorter it would have been better. I do not know. The first half was very good, and then towards the end it made me tired. But basically the film is solid and can be watched.
Raging Bull (1980)
Very good but...
One of De Niro's best roles in a very good Martin Scorsese's film. There is not much to say about this classic, which has not already been said... Basically, the film is great, but in my opinion, it may not even be in the top 5 best of Martin's.
The Old Guard (2020)
Satisfying...
What makes this film good is its interesting and well-crafted story, which gives us a different view of superheroes. Apart from the story, everything else is not too good, but it is on a solid level. The action is good, the acting is not too emphasized, but that can't be expected in films like this... I would also add that the soundtrack is good and that's all that is enough to make a completely solid action film. I hope for an even better sequel...
Phone Booth (2002)
Meeh.
A mediocre crime thriller, which holds attention as much as to be watchable. Otherwise, the story is not bad. The realization is a bit naive and pale, you can look at it, but if you get around it, you haven't missed anything special.
Gravity (2013)
Absolutly Remarkable!
These are such effects and space landscapes that are incredibly emotional in the man's sense of harmony and thinking ... Even if I add the very emotion that the film possesses, I come to the conclusion that Gravity is an absolute 3D Masterpiece!
