Crooked House (2017)
A talented cast carry this dull adaptation.
Far from the worst two hours I've ever spent watching a movie. The only intriguing mystery in this Agatha Christie adaptation is how they managed to gather so many great actors to work on this mess.
The direction takes the shaky camera technique to a new level as the camera seems to have been held by an inexperienced toddler who's well overdue for a nap. The editing feels like it was lazily cut and pasted together by bored intern on their last day. The writing is so dreary and mediocre you wonder if a computer program could have come up with something more inspiring. If it was just one of these problems on it's own, the end product may have been somewhat redeemable, but together they all come together in this dull headache inducing dud.
The actors manage to give an enthusiastic and ultimately passable performance given their lackluster dialogue. So much so that it almost makes up for how bad it is. Almost.
Still, I can't say it's the worst thing I've ever seen, if it's on again, however, I'll give it a miss.
Miriam's Big American Adventure (2018)
Pause for fart (and for thought).
Miriam is unabashed, outspoken, loud, frank and utterly mesmerizing. She seems to live in her own wold, and I would love to go there. I love her beyond words so I'm afraid I can't be an impartial judge on this brilliant and all too brief series.
Miriam is in fact a very engaging interviewer, there's seemingly no one immune to her unique charms and she just pulls you in to any and every situation she finds herself in. The series follows many different people from various walks of life, as she asks what the "American Dream" means to them, how important it is in modern society, and if it still exists.
Every episode was an utter joy, I only hope they can find more people for her to ruffle in future series. It can't be hard.
Hard Sun (2018)
Don't look directly into it. In fact, don't bother watching it at all.
Hard Sun is one of the most abysmal series I have ever had the misfortune of witnessing in my life. The fact that the dialogue was more than likely written by a lazy infant was the least of this train-wrecks' problems. This formulaic "thriller" was filled with half baked tension and eye-rolling twists and turns. The acting was at times bordering on really good, which is very impressive giving the material. The only reason I kept going was this was such a strong premise and I was convinced it could only get better as it went on. Such a disappointing waste. One saving grace, for me at least, was the wonderful Aisling Bea, who I adore, apart from that it had nothing going for me.
Catastrophe (2015)
Beam of sunshine
Catastrophe is a comedy that resembles beam of refreshing sunshine amongst a shower of re-hashings and blatant rip-off attempts (not that I'm saying Catastrophe is wholly original, that's just how it feels). In the madness of modern life a pessimist and a withdrawn mercenary find comfort in each other and inadvertently make a baby.
Sharon Horgan and Rob Delaney make for a dream of a double act and give an honest natural performance with surprise laughs round every corner.
It's all perfect until eventually the pair have to interact with blandly over-the-top recurring characters (to be fair most of which gladly improve - if ever so slightly - in the second run) which miss the "likeable eccentric" target by a country mile. At least some good comes from hilarious cameos from Carrie Fisher at the expense of poor Sharon.
Even the ridiculous secondary characters can't dull the couple's explosive comedic chemistry. I wouldn't hesitate to call Catastrophe the best TV comedy of the decade so far. A fantastic sitcom.
She's the One (1996)
What a snore-fest.
This has to be one of the most boring movies I have ever had the misfortune of seeing. There's not one remotely interesting or likable character.
No one in front of the camera makes the slightest bit of effort, and the direction is shoddy as well. I was shocked to later find out it's supposed to be a "comedy" drama seeing as there were absolutely no laughs at all. I have no idea why I stuck it out until the end, I thought there'd be some kind of redeeming quality in it; guess what: no.
I wonder if everyone was riding on the popularity of 'Friends' and 'Frasier' to get tickets moved, and then they were hardly in it. It's definitely not the first or last movie to pull that kind of stunt.
I bought this in a charity shop (mainly because of Jennifer and Cameron) I don't even want to take it back and subject any other poor unsuspecting soul to this disaster of a yawn-filled-nothing.
I feel I should find at least one redeeming quality to be fair. Both taxi scenes were kind of sweet and/or interesting.
I would not recommend this to my worst enemy.
My Family: Serpent's Tooth (2000)
No actors were harmed in the making of this programme
Brilliant show, great opener.
I love how they just dives into the story, not bothering with all the frequent first episode traps; not that it really needs that much explaining, but they could've gone that way. The episode is perfectly paced and hilarious and all in all a great introduction to a brilliant series. What amazing chemistry the actors had so early on, especially Robert and Zoë; such an amazing dream cast.
The scene where Ben is kissing Susan and finds out about Susan's "cheating" only by her teeth is absolute genius. Cracks me up every time.
I've always been quite miffed they didn't keep the rabbit for good, he was a great character.
Inside No. 9: The 12 Days of Christine (2015)
Chilling, outstanding and perfect
The little show that could, the gift that keeps on giving, and all the other clichés you want.
This episode was by far the best half hour of television I have watched this year so far. A fantastic idea that pulls off and then some. Stunning performance by Sheridan Smith who (again) hooks you in with her seemingly effortless charm and talent, and the rest of the cast hold it together brilliantly.
I don't think I've used the "roller coaster ride" of emotions comparison quite so accurately. I was left so shaken after the gripping, suspenseful and heartbreaking story that I doubt I'll be able to shake off anytime soon. I expected the usual twisted, witty and quirky fun show we expect from the series; instead I got a firm tug (or a hard kick) on the heartstrings.
Also massive praises again to Reece Shearsmith & Steve Pemberton for their incredible writing skills goes without saying.
In short: Wow! I have no envy for the episode that has to follow this.
G.B.F. (2013)
Really quite good
The offensive pandering monstrosity the trailers and promos were making this out to be suddenly turned into a really nice fun(ny) film. Old fashioned fun, maybe, but fun none the less.
The obvious stereotyping and far too overused gags aside, G.B.F. is actually quite an enjoyable film. There are a few cringe-makingly, unnecessary, "seen it all before" moments but I can forgive a few bad scenes. So, you could definitely call it a very extreme film: the good scenes are fantastic and the not so good scenes are like something out of a bad parody.
The movie practically proclaims itself as a "Gay Mean Girls" and it's a well deserved title. It may not be worth falling over yourself to go see it but it's definitely one to keep on the back burner for a casual viewing.
