Sardar Udham (2021)
Why did the makers not release this MASTERPIECE in the theatres?!
I have just one word for this film. M-A-S-T-E-R-P-I-E-C-E. Masterpiece. The film has the best visuals and performances by the lead. Couldn't have been a better tribute to Shaheed-e-Azam Sardar Udham Singh. You cannot miss this film at any cost. Hats off, Shoojit Sircar!
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)
Watch it for the Philosophy.
I entered the theatre to watch 'Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings' with skepticism as I was pretty much disappointed with the Phase 4 of Marvel films. Though, the story is predictable, it is the Philosophy that makes the film worthwhile. The Philosophy of Maya which is unexplored in films from Indian subcontinent despite having the origins from the same and Hollywood doing justice to the dogma, oh boy, I am thrilled. Kudos, Marvel.
Bombay Velvet (2015)
Visually Stunning Bombay Velvet is a HUGE Letdown!
First things first, BOMBAY VELVET is Anurag Kashyap's weakest film till date. Made on a hefty budget of 120 crores, I as a cinema lover is feeling cheated. The film industry runs on the money paid by the audience which the production houses earn from previous films. And later these production houses sign various directors with whom they think that they have the potential to deliver. But with the same budget Anurag Kashyap could have made a much greater film in terms of style and substance.
Well to be honest, I am confused about Ranbir Kapoor's character in the film as Johnny Balraj. I mean who is he in the film, yes, we know that he wants to become a Big Shot but who is he? Coming to Anushka Sharma as Rosie, she excels! For me she is the saving grace for this horrendous film. She is absolutely gorgeous and her act in equally disappointing climax is absolutely fantastic. Karan Johar as Khambata in his debut, makes up a good villain as per the script demanded, but what was the script?
Anurag Kashyap has big films to his name like Gangs of Wasseypur, Ugly, DevD etc but he fails miserably this time. He attempts to make a commercial entertainer which falls flat on his face. No doubt, he has presented the movie very well, but the nutrients like entertainment, story, style, content, etc are thoroughly missing. Music by Amit Trivedi grows slowly upon you. Songs like Dhadaam Dhadaam and Behroopia are my favorite. Due to clichéd plot the background score didn't intensify my viewing experience.
On the whole, BOMBAY VELVET is a huge let down. Unnecessary violence plays a huge contribution in its letdown. Audience will reject it, because for me GOW had set a benchmark but this one was not even near Anurag Kashyap's credentials! Watch it if you want see how Anushka Sharma is the saving grace of this film. Otherwise skip it! DISASTER!
PK (2014)
P.K :- A Child's Innocence. A Gentleman's Maturity.
When Munnabhai MBBS was released, I was 7 years old. I was 10 years old when Lage Raho Munnabhai was released. I was 13 when 3 Idiots hit the screens. This year I am 18. In short, I have grown up watching Rajkumar Hirani films. And every film he directs, he has a new story to tell. A new message to deliver. Gives a new reason to make us smile.
As a space-ship lands in the desert in Rajasthan, P.K (Aamir Khan) is unaware of this new world. As destined to be, Jaggu (Anushka Sharma) meets P.K who is in search of something. (Watch the film to know). And rest of the proceedings form the story. No doubt, P.K is Rajkumar Hirani's most accomplished work but it also deals with a prominent issue that resides in our society.
I must say the story is indeed very difficult to present it in a form of media. But Rajkumar Hirani has presented it in a very entertaining way. This proves this guy can do the impossible. His trade-mark can be seen all over the motion. If Munnabhai had 'Jadoo Ki Jhappi & Gandhigiri.', 3 Idiots had 'Aal Izz Well.' P.K has 'Wrong Number.' You will understand this when you watch the film.
Dialogues are witty and humorous. One Line is like 'Jo Darr gaya, Woh Mandir Gaya'. WOW! Those aren't the cheesy dialogues normally a bollywood film has. The emotional scenes will surely bring tears to your eyes.
Coming to the performances, P.K is Aamir Khan's best film till date. He has done total justice to the character and I don't think that anybody else could have matched him up. He has done Wonders! Don't miss the debate scene in the 2nd half which is sure to bring tears. Anushka Sharma as Jaggu is phenomenal. As P.K's only friend she never brought a dull moment in the film. Sanjay Dutt, Boman Irani, Saurabh Shukla, Sushant Singh Rajput are great in their parts. Don't miss Ranbir Kapoor's cameo.
Music by Shantanu Moitra is good. Bhagwan Hai Kahan Re Tu is my pick of the lot because the song made me silent.
On the whole, P.K is an eye-opener. It is a film that is not be watched only for entertainment but also for re-checking your lifestyle, changing the vision towards the society. Thank you Rajkumar Hirani, Aamir Khan, Abhijat Joshi and the entire team for such a lovely film. Discover love. Discover Life. Discover GOD! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
P.S:- Pop out your ears. Open your eyes wide. Be P.K! Watch it Now. It is URGENT!
Happy New Year (2014)
Visually stunning HNY is a great Entertainer!!!
Main Hoona Na and Om Shanti Om (both the films directed by Farah Khan) are considered one of the most entertaining bollywood films. And after Farah's Tees Maar Khan's debacle, she is back with her new outing HAPPY NEW YEAR which was supposed to be made in 2005 but was later shelved! Will it be SRK's another Ra.one or will it be into the lists of the most entertaining films?
Charlie(ShahRukh Khan) is planning to rob some diamonds from Charan Grover(Jackie Shroff) for a specific reason(Watch the movie and you will get to know) with help of his 5 friends. But to rob him he has to take part in World Dance Championship! The plot looks so simple and you might be thinking such a simple plot but a very long film? Well apart from the plot the movie has many other things to offer!
Farah Khan has directed a heist film without any blood and gore or love making scene, which is in itself an achievement, because family audiences were looking for such a film with GREAT production values for a very long time! I guess last one was...Ah! Very few! And I should say a film doesn't need a kissing scene to make it impressive for the youth because I am 18 and I watch movies with my family! I didn't need to look down for any scene in the film! I didn't hear a single word of disgust from my parent like 'Is that what you surf or watch on Internet'. I applaud Farah for that.
Coming to the performances, ShahRukh Khan rocks in the film! His dialogue delivery, especially during the emotional moments is fantastic! Deepika Padukone as Mohini has done a good job as a bar dancer cum dancer teacher cum a WINNER! Yes, a WINNER! Boman Irani, Sonu Sood and Abhishek Bachchan all of them are brilliant. Special mention to Vivaan Shah as Rohan, has done a cool job as a hacker but needs a bit grooming though a good talent found.
Music by Vishal-Shekhar will grow inside you and grows to max after watching the movie. India-Waale and Manwa-laage already topping the charts, I think Satakli will grow slowly within the people. My pick of the lot is Satakli and Manwa-Laage.
Despite usual clichés, HAPPY NEW YEAR excels as a film! With great production values, heart warming moments, good Music, good story, good direction, this is a film Audience(especially families) were looking for and Here it is. Happy New year is a fun watch! Recommended!
P. S- I don't care how the story was or whatever. After watching the depressing Haider(A great movie), I really needed a mind refreshing film with wholesome entertainment! And yes I got it.
Holiday (2014)
HOLIDAY:- A SOLDIER IS NEVER OFF DUTY is a must watch!
HOLIDAY, A.R Murugadoss's second venture in Bollywood is the remake of Tamil film THUPAKKI. Actually, the production of HOLIDAY was started much before THUPAKKI but due to some reasons the film got delayed.
HOLIDAY is the story of Virat Bakshi(Akshay Kumar) whose mission is to deactivate(watch the movie then say what deactivate means here) the sleeper cells! This movie has been promoted as a Romantic Comedy Thriller because that's what Indian audience likes otherwise this could have been an another MADRAS CAFE, which was somewhat similar like this meant only for the classes. Well wait guys, HOLIDAY is a movie which everyone can watch. From masses to classes. Guess what, Audience in the multiplex cheered up for the every positive twist during the film. RAJA SEN, rediff's renown critic has given this movie 1.5 stars. Don't listen to him guys, he is simply a useless critic who gets paid for giving 5 stars to DEDH ISHQIYA and 3 stars to TASHAN. Anyways, who listens to a critic( I never did. )
PERFORMANCES:- There is a scene in one of the many best scenes in the movie in which Virat captures a sleeper cell. That scene is tremendous! Applause from everywhere was heard! HOLIDAY is Akshay Kumar's one of the best film till date. He is flawless. Every time he smiles, you smile! Sonakshi Sinha was a mere showpiece but still she was necessary for the light moments. Same for Govinda. Sumeet Raghavan has also done a good job playing the character of police officer Mukund. A special mention to the debutant Farhad, he is seriously CRIMINAL. What a talent!
MUSIC:- It's Okay. The best song is Ashq Na ho. Its emotionally heart touching music and lyrics left everyone teary-eyed.
SCREENPLAY AND DIRECTION:- A.R Murugadoss, his second bollywood film after Ghajini, has done a tremendous job. He is top notch. Screenplay is so smooth that it will keep you hooked onto your seat till the end!
HOLIDAY:- A SOLDIER IS NEVER OFF-DUTY is one of the best Indian films which deserves an applause for the message. The film is completely flawless. If the story is flawed, guys just remember the closing scene, everything will be fine! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Jai Ho (2014)
Jai Ho! Rocks!
2010 marked the turning point for Salman's career, when his film Dabangg arrived. It created a nationwide sensation. First for his different character and second for Munni Badnaam. Since then, he has created a huge fan-base and each time his film becomes a Blockbuster, in spite being a dud(say Bodygaurd and Ready).
Well, after 13 months, his new film 'Jai Ho!' has hit the screens and I would like to say that it is his best film till date. I have very less expectations from his movies as his films don't have a proper story line. But 'Jai Ho!' excels. It has a great plot with a well-intentioned message.
Coming to the plot, Jai Agnihotri (Salman) is a decorated ex-army officer who gets suspended for disobeying his senior's orders during a counter strike. Since then, he has become People's Man. His idea is to help 3 people and tell them to help 3 more, and so on creating a chain. The basic plot is brought from telugu movie Stalin, which is itself a remake of Hollywood film Pay It Forward.
The performances from the lead is from Great to average. Salman roars in 'Jai Ho!' He will make you whistle. The Police station fight sequence, his at minister's office act and the climax will bring you goosebumps for sure. He has proved himself that he can deal a serious role really well. Tabu, as Jai's sister is good. Her encounter with Danny is noteworthy. Daisy Shah doesn't get much scope but is a great dancer. Danny, the corrupt minister is efficient. A special mention to Naman Jain, as Jai's nephew, will make you laugh every time he is on screen. Genelia is good in a brief role.
Sohail Khan has done his job well but it could have been better. A little more care on the execution would have been perfect. Screenplay is tight. Action sequences are great and will bring whistles. The only letdown has been the Music.
On the whole, 'Jai Ho!' rises above expectations and is a great entertainer. It is a must watch, even if you aren't a Salman fan, go as an Indian. You'll love it. It has a message. And yes it is true that One Man can make a difference. JAI HO! Rocks!
Dhoom:3 (2013)
Dhoom:3 - A Spectacular entertainer and Wow! Aamir Khan has done wonders!
Iqbal (Jackie Shroff), running a circus company named "The Great Indian Circus" with his son Sahir, has no money to pay back the loans. This frustration leads to the death of Iqbal. Now, Sahir considers the bankers to be responsible for his dad's death and his only goal is to avenge his father's death....
Dhoom and Dhoom:2 were 2 movies which had all the gloss and style but lacked soul. Yes, It's true. I didn't liked the latter parts. But this time being Aamir Khan in the sequel, I had some expectations from the movie. No one( Alas! I guess), who went to the theater expected a storyline. This what makes Dhoom:3 special. This venture has a plot. This movie has SOUL. Vijay Krishna Acharya's Dhoom:3 is easily one of the finest films to come out from Bollywood Industry. The fantastic visuals, the direction, the music, the execution of the script, The characters make Dhoom:3 spectacular. Though the plot has clichés, perfect execution makes the film delightful.
Performances:- Aamir Khan is the show stealer. Yes, he has not only stolen the money from the bank but our hearts too.(Nothing else to say about Aamir. Watch the movie. He has different shades.) Abhishek is good as the cop. Uday is again Mummy cute.Katrina Kaif had a brief role but she too was fantastic with dance and acrobatics. Siddharth Nigam as young Sahir was great. What a talent!
Music:- My pick of the lot is Malang because that song was turning point for the entire film. The thrill and the revelation of the suspense is wonderful. On the whole, Dhoom:3 is a must watch. A great entertainer. Recommended!
P.S:- Even I've watched The Prestige, but I have no complaints because some Indians really don't know how to appreciate a sincere effort! Thank you.
Besharam (2013)
Besharam:- An average fare..!
Though, after watching the trailer I had very low expectations from the movie. It ended up being better than it's trailer. The theatrical trailer getting around 53% likes on youtube, "Besharam" promised to be a routine Bollywood masala entertainer. Did the movie live up to its expectations? Or is it an another Himmatwala? Let's see....
Abhinav Singh Kashyap's new outing Besharam has all the moments (Action, Romance, Music, Comedy, Drama) but far and few.
What's Good about it:- Some jokes and comedy scenes (especially the embarrassing semi-naked bath scene) is hilarious. The trio- Ranbir, Rishi, Neetu Singh and the Dabanng director's stamp on the film- Abhinav Singh Kashyap. The humorous BGM in between the jokes. Javed Jaffery.
What's bad about it:- All the technical aspects of the film was not up-to the mark. The music. The Story. Pallavi Sharda's irritating screen presence in some scenes.
Abhinav's Besharam could have been a disaster due to its horrendous plot but I should say it's Ranbir who saved the whole film. His completely new shameless avatar will be loved by the masses. His parents Rishi and Neetu Kapoor ji were good in their respective roles. Pallavi Sharda was not impressive at all. Her screen presence reminded me of Tamannah in Himmatwala. Well whatever, every actor has a downfall, every actor has a bad film to do like Shahrukh's Ra.One, Ajay's Himmatwala, and now Ranbir's Besharam....!
Overall an Average film...! 2 stars extra for Ranbir Kapoor 5/10
Madras Cafe (2013)
Overall a great Political Thriller in recent times!
Shoojit Sircar, known for directing unconventional movies(Vicky Donor, Yahaan) has come with his new outing "Madras Cafe". Movie was in buzz from the day it was announced creating controversies all around it. Is it that Controversial to get banned? Well let me say, many people have different opinions on this film, but the fact is THIS FILM HAS SHOWN THE TRUTH! Shoojit has perfectly blended fiction with true events. And the most interesting part is that its not FICTION but The TRUTH which has created this much controversies. Set in mid 1980's, this film is based on Civil War in Srilanka, LTTE's role in assassinating Ex-PM Rajiv Gandhi. John Abraham, actor-producer, has done a fantastic job playing R&AW agent. He has proved that he can act in mainstream Cinema as well. Nargis Fakhri, as journalist, is efficient. Screenplay is aptly done. But plot holes are there. And the major one can be a blunder! John knows about the plastic bomb through the scientist in a scene, but he doesn't informs about the bomb to RD! This plot-hole must have been avoided. Well many of them may not have noticed that as the screenplay is so tight that you will sit at the edge of the seat till the conclusion! This film is all the way better than many political thrillers! I will love to say that you should enter this café and see the history in the most stylish way ever. RECOMMENDED!
