Yeah, i know how late to the party i am here. It has been more than 4 years since the airing of Rick and Morty's first season. After all the cult following the series has achieved, receiving lots of praise - sometimes in weird ways - and some hate too, just last month i got the will to watch it.
Following the adventures of a genius old scientist living in the house of his daughter accompanied by his not so brilliant grandson, the Adult Swin show take a already know background to surround them, and takes it to a whole other level. We have a pretty utilized formula for a family here: a smart wife who underwhelmed her potential as surgeon in benefit of her family, her husband, just an underdog common guy who tries his best to take care of his idea of a nice family and a teenage girl, with a lot of the characterists you would expect for someone at her age living in the country she lives.
Even knowing reasonably what the show was about, the aclaim it achieved and his proclaimed goals, i saw myself surprised on almost of all of the episodes by the excellence it attains on entertainment and the cleverness of the plots and jokes it gets here and there. Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying you need some above the average qi or a lot of knowledge in physics or maths to get it. This is a comedy show, not "you are too smart to get it" thing - if something like that exists. However, the plot twists of Rick Potion #9 and Close Rick-counters of the Rick Kind, accompained by an awesome soundtrack and, like all the episodes, lovely jokes and dialogues, are excellence in what we know as cartoon series.
The rest of the family, nonetheless looking common from other series, are well explored on M. Night Shaym-Aliens! and Rixty Minutes, for example. Their frustrations, weaknesses, dreams, goals and disappointments are showed in a way which few productions with just 23 minutes by episode did so far. The capacity of getting so many aspects of this universe in just 13 episodes is baffling, at least to me.
This exploration of the characters of course gets the protagonists of the show too. Even if not explaining exactly why Rick choose Morty as his partner for so exquisite situations, the aspects of this old man are talked about through the series as well. Such great mind couldn't help but have his insecurities, defenses, bad habits, fears and afections, all of them being masked by a rude and funny character. Same goes to Morty, whose constant insecurity, cowardice and cowardice frequently play a counter look to Rick's personality.
The animation fits perfectly in the mood and proposal of the plot, probably couldn't have been better. The voice acting, for some a little forced sometimes - the burps of Jerry are the best example of that - is a very smart look on the personalities of those characters, really useful for a show with short time per episode.
In this way, Rick and Morty's first season almost achieves a "perfect" avaliation for me. If this was about "awesome" and "not THAT great" episodes, i could put just two episodes on the second classification, with them being the Pilot and Something Ricked This Way Comes. Really, everyone should have a chance to see this show.
