Little Fires Everywhere (2020)
Extraordinary.... LIGHT spoilers
This is an incredible show, and I would argue a must watch. Despite how everyone appears to be reviewing this series... I think the ENTIRE cast did an incredible job in their roles. With many new young faces to see filling their roles perfectly, and Reese Witherspoon doing an incredible job as always, the role that really captivated me was Kerry Washington. I've loved Washington since Scandal (2012-2018) which was my first exposure to her and she is made to play dynamic, intense and deep roles. For those who can't handle the emotion she is able to project on her face, I guess go watch a comedy. In this role, Washington is able to single handedly show what it means to e a single black mom who has experienced hardship and who deals with battles of sexuality, race, poverty and feelings of regret, remorse, rage and fear. In this particular role her character is very emotional, but thats not a sign of poor acting, it is a sign of portraying that character as it is written/directed. Overall, I loved this show, hope it becomes a series as I binged it in 24 hours!!!
Dangerous Lies (2020)
Not the worst thing on Netflix, nor the best.
So I only watched this movie because I like Camila in Riverdale, I am normally too much of a chicken to watch anything that might actually be scary. I think because of the title, I worked myself into thinking that this would be more "thriller" then it actually was. There was one or two kinda intense scenes where I tensed up but I also do that while watching Riverdale or Sabrina haha.
I would not classify this as an intense show and I'm sure most people could watch it without being too scared. If you should or not is another thing... If your looking for something super scary, probably not. If your looking for a lot of mystery... probably not... If you really like Camila and just want something on in the background while you watch tictok or play solitaire? Sure. It doesn't require a lot of attention and is easy to follow.
I would likely only give it a 6.5 if I could... but I'm nice and round up.
Feel the Beat (2020)
A feel good movie for sure! (Light Spoilers, not plot ruining)
If you ever watched "Honey" (2003 I think)... well this is like the updated version of that. It's a fun movie about a big city girl who has to get creative about making her "Big Break" and finds a new passion (or two, and maybe an old one haha) along the way. There is love, laughter and general light heartedness throughout the movie. There are definitely worse ways to spend 2 hours these days.
The Order (2019)
Right up my alley!
So I love anything supernatural or magical etc which probably means I'm not very hard to please as long as the show is in that genre. But... heres the kicker, this one is actually really good. I mean, I don't think it'll win awards... but the story line is entertaining and theres a lot that goes on in a season. Where in some shows they they have one major problem/dilemma/challenge each season... in this one they are trying to overcome multiple hurdles in the span of 10 episodes. It makes the show feel pretty fast passed and I'm never feeling tempted to skip ahead to the action. Overall I do really like the show and I hope they keep making it because its a great summer flick.
Someone noted that if you like Magicians this one might be worth trying, and I agree... if you don't mind a younger acting cast. All the actors in this show feel like their new to university kind of age where in Magicians I always interpreted them to be late twenties or so. If that's not a mental block give it a try! :)
V-Wars (2019)
For Ian...
I fell in love with the incredibly gorgeous Ian when the Vampire Diaries came out and was all to excited to watch another vampire show with my favorite vampire.... and yet, as I approach episode 5 I find myself distracted by other things going on in my house and not caring what I miss in the show. I'm also damn disappointed that zero Damon qualities appear in this vampire show as he has yet to become a vampire and I don't think he's ever gunna....
All and all, I'll continue to watch it so I can gush over Ian, but I'd really like to see some story line improvements and maybe, just maybe a better back story of the mysterious virus...?
The I-Land (2019)
Better then the reviews would have you think.....
Okay, I'm not saying that this is the best show on netflix... I ain't even saying its the best SciFi show on Netflix... What I will say is that I enjoyed the story line alot and think its under rated. I can't remeber I time I saw anything like it and really want to see a second season. I was captivated the whole time and was surprissed several ties with the twists and turns of the show. I would like to see more, please make more.
Stranger Things (2016)
My 7 is generous after watching season 3..... Mild Spoilers
This show was captivating when it first came out. A 9.5 outta 10... right up there with GOT, Breaking Bad and Dro. Who... It could have had a cult following FOR SURE. My boyfriend and I had binged through the first season antisipating every episode and captivated by the mystery and the acting. Season two was enjoyable, but it had lost it's thunder. Never the less, we really enjoyed watching the seson.
Season three.... *sigh* There is nothing about season thress that I enjoyed if I'm honest. The children looked like they were crammed into toddlers clothing (despite having bicepts) and their amazing acting somehow regressed (I'm gunna blame it on the writting) The story line was unorigional (Hello body snatchers) and the need for those damn heart to hearts in every episode was straight up boring! I dreaed each episode and only commited in hopes it would wrap up with an amazing Stranger Things ending.
To those who haven't seen this show yet.... watch season one... if you can't help but push through, watch season two, but spare youself the dispaointment of season three... and I say that as an individual who commits to everything I start watching, even if its 7 or 14 seasons in! Don't waste your time!
A Kid Like Jake (2018)
Important, but not quite there...
I was instantly captivated by the potential behind this movie. I think the story line is something that more parents (and kids) really need to see. Young kids can be trans and they can have behavioural issues as a result. It's imporant that parents know this is potentially something to look for and its important for kids to get that support... saying all that.... I think this movie was poorly executed. I think Jim did a great job in his role as the timid social worker father but everything else seemed to lack sustenence and I felt like it took me 90 minutes to get through what could have been 30 minutes of a movie. I was also really hoping for more from the child, but I guess it was targeted for the parents persepective. Overall, I think people should watch the movie... but don't expect it to be mind blowing or extreamly captivating. It's a good learning oppertunity and eye openeing but not a great movie
