Love (2016–2018)

This is very much a "girls show"..... but.....
20 May 2016
.....it sucked me in anyway, and I ended up watching the whole first season in a day.

The reason is, that the quality of acting is so superb, that you at times wonder if the leads are actually acting, or just being themselves.

Gillian Jacobs is either extraordinarily talented, or completely neurotic - and I need to keep watching, to work out which it is :)

It's in the same comedic vein as "You're The Worst", but not quite as good, because the writing is not on par.... but then, "You're The Worst" is one of my favorite 3 shows.

Not quite good enough
19 February 2016
Craig Ferguson is still one of the funniest people on the planet.

But, this format is terrible.

It started well, with a familiar feeling cold open, that made everyone laugh.

But, enter the panel, to discuss "the biggest political blunders in history"..... and apparently that doesn't really mean "history" - it rather means "within the past 20 years, because nobody remembers further back".

Add to that, that the short format means you never really get any in-depth discussion, because you need to hurry it along, to the rapidly approaching end of the short show.

It leaves you with a feeling, that it might as well be a TMZ panel discussing the latest Kardashian story..... shallow, mildly entertaining and quickly forgotten.

I hope the format changes.... both in length and in depth, because otherwise this will be a one-season run, for one of my favorite comedians, unfortunately.

Life in Pieces (2015–2019)

Excellent show

Very much in the same comedy vein as Modern Family, this show is very well cast indeed, all round, even the kids are promising characters with comedic potential.

Writing is modern, dialogue driven, fast paced and funny.

I have added this show to my "must watch comedies list", for this part of the year, along with Modern Family, You're The Worst, Black-ish and catastrophe, and currently, it's the funniest show to watch on a Wednesday.

I highly recommend it, because this show has the potential to become a long running hit, also because of smart and ambitious scheduling.

The Jim Gaffigan Show (2015–2016)
10/10
What a pleasant surprise
9 August 2015
I have never really been a Jim Gaffigan fan. Sure, he's funny, but far from one of my favorite stand ups.

As such, I am greatly surprised by how good this show is - in my view, one of the best comedies headed by a stand up comedian in years.

The chemistry with Ashley Williams is believable and balanced, she is not just a prop, but in fact very funny herself.... I especially enjoyed seeing her come to life in Episode 4, rather than just playing the boring "frustrated" housewife.

Michael Ian Black is awesome as the snarly homo friend, and Adam Goldberg is finally in a role where he get's a bit of depth, rather than just being the token angry a..hole, which usually get's old really fast in his previous work.

All in all, this show is well written, well acted and well produced, and highly recommended to anyone who also like current shows like You're the worst (which I put this show on par with) and Married (which I rank slightly below The Jim Gaffigan Show).

Black-ish (2014–2022)
9/10
ABC has got a hit on its hands
13 November 2014
Not since the Cosby days, have we seen a black TV family which was really interesting and relatable for all.

This one is.

And, as is the case of very few other TV comedies, like Modern Family and New Girl, every regular cast member delivers.... including the kids, which is very much a rarity in both TV shows and movies.

The show is well written, the acting is good, it tackles issues in an elegant way, without moralizing excessively, which is unusual for too many US TV shows.

All in all, this is a top 5 comedy show currently, together with the aforementioned two, The League and You're The Worst.

FX has a hit on it's hands
1 August 2014
I stumbled onto this show by accident, online.

The pilot got me interested, the next episode got me exited, and as I just watched the 3rd episode, it had me bawling with laughter.

The final scene, they ask the black guy at the door "are you gay?", having caught him in his underwear with the white openly gay guy.... and his reply is "no, but this n***er sucks really good dick".

Hilarious and refreshingly irreverent!

This show is of a really high quality, well casted and well written, like early seasons of Entourage or Californication... but it's a comedy.

I urge people to see it, so it survives.
