America's Sweethearts (2001)
One of my all time favorites
This movie had an awesome cast, such a fun plot, a bunch of one liners that I will always quote ever chance I get.... I wish there were a full version of the movie they "made" within this movie, "Time Over Time." The bit we get to see is so amazing, I really wish they'd given us a full version of it. I'd pay to see that, as well as some deleted scenes and extras! I feel like, for some reason, this movie has never been talked about much or given nearly the amount of attention that it truly deserves. Absolutely every single character is so perfectly cast... I feel like it gives us a little bit of insight to what being a film start might actually be like.
Pride & Prejudice (2005)
I can't stop watching it
I just can't stop watching it. It's as if I've been taken back to this time period and just don't want to leave it. What's amazing about the relationship between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett is, I believe, how honest they are with one another. They're conversations have everything they need to have in order to get to the heart of what Jane Austen intended and absolutely nothing that they don't need. It has probably the best dialogue in the world. This film couldn't have been done more perfectly. A big part of that is in the cinematography. It is incredibly beautiful and far different from anything I've seen before. For example, when we see Mr. Darcy in the mirror when he drops off the letter as if we are looking directly through the eyes of Elizabeth. Not to mention the breathtaking landscapes. There are hundreds more examples, but I can't possibly describe them as well as the movie can show them to you. I've never read the book, but after being so captivated by this film, I don't see how I can possibly avoid it now. I went out and bought it today. Everything about this movie is enchanting and refreshing. The truth in how they judge each other from the start, and then the honesty in how they confront each other about it. Keira Knightly brings an elegance to the character of Elizabeth along with her down to Earth manner of living and approaching people. Matthew Macfadyen is simply sublime. He doesn't even need the lines; just his facial expressions get the whole meaning across. Whenever I watch this, every scene he's in, I cannot help but stare at him the entire time, or else I feel like I'm missing something important. I hate just blinking when he's in a scene. I could go on and on about Donald Sutherland and everyone else as well, but all I basically want to say is that this film had the absolutely, hands-down, brilliant, most perfect cast that could ever have been conceived. The story line is what we might think of as being too simple. "We" being the spoiled audience of today who have had our heads filled with explosions and bullshit dramatic sequences. But in fact, the beauty of it is in the way Austen brings out the deeper meaning of every single seemingly insignificant event. It is a must see for all the decent, intelligent people left in the world.
Because I Said So (2007)
good and bad...
I thought this movie was... good... because of the psychology of their relationship, and the acting, and the gorgeous guy, Gabriel Macht.... but through the entire movie I just wanted to rip my hair out. It was definitely entertaining, but I wanted to slap the mother over and over again. And Milly... I liked her, but I didn't understand why she was sleeping with both guys anyway. I know her mom was pushing her on Jason and she wanted to make her mom happy, but after the way he treated her and how fake he was, I didn't buy that as being reason enough to keep seeing him, especially when she's got this GREAT guy, John, falling for her already! He was the only character I loved throughout the entire movie. him and his dad. I also thought that there needed to be a lot more explanation about the relationship between Johns dad and Daphnee. There needed to be more chemistry with the two of them. Overall, it was a good movie. It made a GREAT point about "helicopter parents", and I thought it was really funny. I just wanted to shoot the mother and Milly from time to time, and since those are the two main characters, that is definitely not a good thing. The music and the costumes were INCREDIBLY well done! I was extremely impressed with those two aspects. plus, it was just refreshingly original, as far as plot. I'd absolutely see it again.
Stranger Than Fiction (2006)
In a word... perfect.
This film has everything. It's funny, scary, surprising, happy, sad, romantic, and the list goes on. If you are not a fan of works previously done by Will Ferrell, do not let that stop you from seeing this movie. This is not only a fabulous script, but it is, by far, the best performance Ferrell has ever given. Emma Thompson is absolutely incredible as the author. She makes what her character does seem so normal. Deep down everyone does it to some degree, but she is completely up front about it. Dustin Hoffman is brilliant, of course. Maggie Gyllenhaal is perfect as well. Her character reminded me that a life I might see as too simple can still be exciting as long as you relax and just be who you are. It's an inspirational, thought-provoking story that you don't want to miss out on.
