Leave the World Behind (2023)
A movie that gets a lot better ten minutes after its finished...
This is one of those lovely movies that keeps you watching and waiting, eager to find out the reason for its existence, even to the very end, for it to stop quite abruptly and perhaps even make you feel like it was mediocre at best. However, you then soon realise that the end is not at all abrupt, it's in fact the ideal time, and a perfectly appropriate ending to what i ended up feeling was almost a spoof. And a good one at that. A shameful and embarrassing look into our future and the end of our existence, thanks to our very own technological advancements and generally disgraceful behaviour patterns. Where all species before us ended up being wiped out naturally, we are the first species in history to wipe ourselves out by being overly reliant on tech. Even in the darkest times, we still find ourselves caring more about characters in a sitcom than we do each other!
Guilt (2019)
Season 1 great. Season 2 meh
Great first season but season 2 lots of drawn out scenes with one to one conversations that feel like speeches where you want to fall asleep. Shame. That said, the music is superb and production very good but content just does not live up to these other aspects that are done so well.
The Perfect Host (2010)
Could have been great
Good premise with bags of potential but unfortunately spoilt by a couple of key points that don't add up. What are the chances of the two main characters meeting the way they do? Unfortunately, probably greater than a million to one.
CHIPS (2017)
Brainless comedy. Loved it
Terrible plot but who cares. Its a funny movie. The two main guys work well together. It would work well as a series. In fact, until i paused it and saw that there was still over an hour left, i thought this was a series but hey. Enjoy it for what it is.
You Were Never Really Here (2017)
I wish i had never really been here.
What on earth were the people behind this thinking of?
I love a slow burn but this is taking the p*ss!
A bunch of people staring into space with arty-farty music playing in the background, and a script as comprehensive as a knock-knock joke.
I urge you not to watch this.
The Boys (2019)
Seriously good
Spotted this on Prime. Quickly IMDB'd it and thought yes. Four episodes in and it must be said this is quality.
Haven't been glued to anything so much since Breaking Bad.
They better be making more seasons. Plenty more to be imagined and realised with so many possibilities for new characters and situations. Definitely some characters you wouldn't want to lose here too.
The cast in general are superbly placed with scripts very refreshingly written.
Just watch it. Even if you don't like superheroes.
Our Planet (2019)
Stunning in 4K
Definitely the best Attenborough doc to date with amazing photography, but it somehow feels like its his last, because of how good it is.
Hopefully this is not the case as we take for granted the good, long-running, reliable things in life.
Would have given 10 stars but unfortunately there were several points where i felt i'd seen it before. Just not in as high definition.
Mr. Brooks (2007)
Watchable but doesn't work
A reasonable idea and worth a watch if you like Kostner but just felt wrong. Perhaps because of Demi Moore and the generally weak script.
Kostner never felt scary or genuinely believable as a killer. He's too nice. Better thrillers to watch.
Predators (2010)
Promising start then downhill quickly
After reading reviews i was interested, as many said it played homage to the original, which i love.
However, apart from a lot of the music and strangely some of the lines too, this is not what you want as a fan of the original.
The original was subtle and took time to develop, keeping the viewer interested and scared. This is the opposite.
I would recommend but only to avoid.
Love (2016)
Good show. Worth watching right through
Just finished Season 3. Very good show. Some episodes are weaker than others but worth sticking with. There are loads of moments that are relatable and if you can relate to it, then you'll enjoy it.
Some very funny moments throughout and the characters are very likeable.
