Saving Lincoln (2013)
Interesting concept, mediocre result
They tried to do something groundbreaking, but it didn't quite work. It is a shame, because the story is interesting. Lamon looked suspiciously like he borrowed his clothes from some old tv western.
A Promise to Astrid (2019)
They mean well
This is apparently a true story about a very kind and generous woman. However, the film, like so many Christian films, isn't very well made. The dialog is sometimes stilted and awkwardly delivered, the lighting is rough, and the main character has a bad wig. I thought the big reveal would be that she was a cancer patient, but there was a haircut scene near the end, so I guess it was actually supposed to be her hair. Also, these Christian filmmakers seem confused about denominations. Mike attends a Protestant church with a married minister, but he has a rosary and Catholic art in his house. They cared about this story and wanted to remember a special lady, so I don't want to be too harsh. I watched this because I knew somebody who was in it and I guess I was just expecting something that didn't look so homespun.
We Were Soldiers (2002)
Hits hard
If you served, you will understand. I'm not ashamed to say I cried when I watched it. It's not just a film about war, it's a film about soldiers' families and the price they pay. And it is based on a true story.
Kecksburg (2019)
I was there
In 1965. There are three boys who go hunting in this film. I wasn't hunting, but I was in the woods that night. I saw the thing in the sky and it wasn't a meteor. Was it aliens like in this film? I seriously doubt that, but I wasn't offended that they went in that direction. It is a film, after all. If you want a documentary, watch Stan Gordon's. He's spent years researching it. Still don't understand why the reporter kissed the woman. He's much better looking than John Murphy. You can see the real man in Stan's documentary. The glare in the actor's eyes when he refuses to lie is intense. I believe that John Murphy was killed for what he knew in real life. All in all, the film was better than I expected. Most of the actors were decent to good and some of the shots were beautiful. Pittsburgh Dad makes a brief appearance as a fireman alongside some real Kecksburg firemen. The credits went by way too fast to read anything so I hope they fix that before the DVD comes out. I'll be buying it. Bought their T Shirts at the UFO festival the last few years. Have to admit I never thought they'd actually finish the film, let alone make something halfway decent and actually entertaining. One of the biggest crowds I've seen at the State Theater ever. It's a shame there were some technical glitches at the beginning with the movie freezing, but I got into the story and had a good time.
Pearl Harbor (2001)
I wanted to like it
The trailers looked great and I am always looking for a good WWII film, so I rushed to the theater for this one. What a disappointment! Makes it seem like there were only two men who fought for the US in the whole war and they both were in love with the same woman. They spent lots of money on this, but they should have started with a better script.
Doubt (2008)
Haunting
I remember the world in which this film is set, so it hits a little too close to home for me. Meryl Streep is brilliant in everything she does, but there are scenes in this that will stick with you forever, like the feathers. If you're Catholic (or used to be) and of a certain age, this film will hit you in the gut and keep hitting you for days. An amazing script with even more amazing actors.
Julie & Julia (2009)
An unlikely subject, but a better film than I expected
My wife wanted to see this, so I went. I expected to be bored out of my skull. Hate to admit it, but I was actually drawn in. Maybe because I've liked Meryl Streep for years. This is a film based on true stories and, at first glance, seems like a film geared towards women, but it was a great date film for a not-so-young couple like us. If you're male and your wife wants to watch it, give it a chance.
