Well, since we're here, we might as well...
1 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
There's a big build up to finding the two original climbers of Everest and to retrieving the camera that one of them carried because it would show whether or not they reached the peak. One of these climbers had already been found, no camera, but they had a good idea where the second might be. Going to the top of Everest was not part of the mission. But, as soon as these self indulgent guys got a ways up the mountain, the primary objective was to summit the mountain. Ultimately one member of the team spent five minutes walking off the trail to see if he could find the body. Just an excuse to make another movie about the nonsense of climbing the tallest mountain as though it is an important use of money.

Poorly written, plot turns are completely predictable
1 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Forget that the original character was smartly created by Tom Clancy. If this had been a brand new character the writing still would have been horrible. Frequently, the plot turns of some unfortunate event that only serves to draw out the story by adding some new obstacle or happy coincidence. The daughter getting the video game that they use to communicate, and the father finding it. The hostage doctor being a friend of the President. The wife of the terrorist, getting on the truck just in time for the team to miss hooking up with her which gave that story line another episode unnecessarily. Over many weeks, I've had to stop watching several times and been equally disappointed each time I return. I cannot seem to get through a single episode in one sitting, but am currently in episode seven of eight. The cast is poorly formed with no chemistry between Abbie Cornish and John Krasinski, and the character of Admiral Greer is a total disaster. I don't feel a need for another season. Amazon, spend the money on something else.

Music in this film is terribly annoying and distracting
27 May 2018
It may seem petty to complain about the music, but it is loud and very distracting. It took a lot away from the film. The story is focussed on a drug dealer who's gotten himself into trouble through a lack of good judgement around a buddy whom he's known since childhood. As a protagonist, he is hard to sympathize with, and I felt ambivalent as to his fate. I nearly quit half way through, but stuck with it and found the second half of the film added nothing. I'd have given it a pass had I known then what I know now.

Started out interestingly, but went nowhere very tediously
4 November 2016
While the film was creative in it setting and filming, the strange dialogue, which helped set a tone, made the interpersonal relationships seem completely forced even when they should not have seemed that way.

The worst part is that I watched it until it stopped. It is as if the film maker didn't have an ending to go to, and just go tired of the movie. Unfortunately, that took a long time. As a short, this film might have been remarkable. As a full length feature, it was just tedious and not entertaining.

On the positive side, it had a great cast who probably did as much as they could with the material they were given. Yorgos Lanthimos wrote, directed and produced the movie and I'm unlikely to want to go see another movie by Yorgos. It was billed as a wickedly funny romance, but was none of those. I did laugh once. It was a single "ha", not a "ha, ha, ha!"

Ultimately a waste of time.

A fun, quirky little movie
20 July 2016
Justin Bateman directs this odd little movie with a clear sense of how the movie should feel. It has real texture. The casting is terrific and the story telling is compelling. I watched it over a period of three nights and thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it.

Nicole Kidman does a convincing job of playing a struggling movie star who isn't recognized easily by the public. She is wonderful to watch as she interacts with Justin Bateman's character. Christopher Walken, as you might imagine plays their nutty father playing the role Christophe Walken seems to play in many movies. Maryann Plunkett plays the mother's role very well as she is torn between her life as it is and as it could have been.

Lots of other actors also play these characters in flashbacks which tie the story together. This was a very enjoyable, easy to watch movie. Good Job Justin.

Terrific true story - not a great job of retelling it.
17 July 2016
Warning: Spoilers
The effects are great. But, the directing was pretty poor. Chris Pine plays the hero Bernie Webber and spends an inordinate amount of screen time at the wheel of this little boat in the middle of a raging gale looking down at nothing. The compass is gone, so he's literally looking down at nothing. In real life he'd never take his eyes off the churning water around him. Very poor directing and way too much melodrama. Too bad because the real story is one of the U.S. Coast Guard's most amazing and mostly successful rescue missions in history. The best actor in the movie is Casey Affleck who does a pretty good job play the quiet, thoughtful, level-headed crewman aboard the stricken tanker.
