The Stand (2020)
Why buy the rights to a different story?
I wanted to like this. A lot.
While I haven't seen the final episode, I have watched all of it to this point.
Some of the casting is excellent. Some... not so much.
My main issue is with the production itself. The story relies on a linear progression of events. Why start skipping around the timeline? In trying to modernize the style of storytelling, the viewers lost the opportunity to see the many crossroads each character faced, there was no soul searching, no time to see them develop from pre-Tripps, into who they needed to become.
The dream sequences (a major, and plot necessary component of the book), instead of appearing as calm and peaceful on the one hand, and terrifyingly menacing on the other, where simply strange, and on both sides oddly disjointed.
The entire Vegas plotline was spun from some magic mushroom hallucination. It so utterly departed from the source material.
The good - Brad Henke as Tom Cullen, Owen Teague as Harold Lauder, and Greg Kinnear as Glen Bateman.
The not so good - A hearty and healthy looking Mother Abigail, and every single thing about Lloyd Henreid and Nadine Cross.
Firefly (2002)
This is my favourite episode!
I can't have a single favourite episode, because each and every one of them is my favourite.
Of all the sci-fi shows I've seen, this has the most likely premise. There is no universal health, wealth, and happiness. There remains a divide between the haves and the have-nots. That divide has simply become even wider, and the gap between is murkier than ever.
The characters are well written, well rounded, and well acted.
The tragedy of the unfinished underlying plot, is in how cleverly it was being created within each episodic storyline.
