Luther (2010–2019)
6/10
Entertaining but...poorly written
28 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
They take all types of shortcuts that make no sense in this show. They create problems where there shouldn't be any. Their internal affairs people are incredibly inept and do absolutely zero police work. They break more laws than Luther.

And lets be real:. A place where they have a neverending supply of serial killers who know where the cops live and none of these cops carry guns? That's just dumb.

Really, the only thing that saves this show is Ruth Wilson. She's phenomenal. I liked Ripley too but they just discarded him right at the beginning of his career.

Every now and then a show can be entertaining while being stupid. This is one of those shows.

Sci-fi Frankenstein's Monster

Wow, they cannibalized so many sci fi movies and video games from the last 20 years. Like total rips. The only thing that makes these movies even remotely entertaining is the actual CGI. Its so nonsensical sometimes you think you're watching Dont Look Up. This movie rips Gravity, Star Trek, Elysium, Armageddon, and thats just to start.

1970's style thriller
22 August 2021
They took some liberties but it was a decent movie in the style of 1970's drama/thrillers. Young folks definitely won't like it but older people will feel the nostalgia.

What was that?!

They made this movie for the 100 people who liked the comic. It's total nonsense to the rest of us.

I liked it. {shrug}

Warning: Spoilers
I read a lot of classic sci-fi short stories and this is just like them. Those stories don't concern themselves with too many technical details, just how the environment affects the people in them. Arthur C. Clarke, asimov, vonnegut all wrote really interesting sci fi about the human condition in odd settings.

This wasn't an award-winning film but it is good sci-fi. One gripe was that he was so distant to his kid. He never came around to the idea of just being a part of her life. But i guess there are people like that.

My only other gripe was that it was really irresponsible for her to have a kid in space. A baby couldn't survive any re-entry manuevers. No matter what planet you are going to.

Warning: Spoilers
It gets good marks for setting (esp in 4k) but this movie has more continuity issues than you can shake a stick at. Like, ridiculous ones. The asian girl has a bikini on, then a negligé, then a bikini again and she never left the cave. Lol. Lava appears out of nowhere. Bond hikes the mountain in khakis but is in a ninja suit with knee cups magically. Then there is the stupidity of an entire village that never sees a rocket come out of the volcano but the girl can run down the mountain and swim 2 miles to the village in 10 min. Man, they really phoned this one in. I can see why Connery *tried* to tap out after this.

An even snoozier version of Ex Machina. This really could have been a Dust (YouTube) short film and in fact there are several films just like this out there. The setting was beautiful though.

The acting really carries this and it was beautifully shot. Sometimes less is more.

If you had read the books....
25 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
If you had read the books you would know why they recast the lead. On every planet you will be sleeved in a different body. Season 1 was Earth (Kinnenan) with flashbacks of Harlan's World (two different adult Asian dudes). Season 2 is mostly present day Harlan's World (Mackie) but starts on Earth (Jihae; because he had to give back the Riker sleeve on Earth)

He also says that in the 30 years between S1 and S2, they went to 42 planets and numerous sleeves. Both him and the hotel AI degraded.

I loved the books and the show is different but awesome.

I watch a lot of films and frankly this one had no punch. There are about 3 or 4 interesting scenes; the rest is just dead space. I love his other films but this one was a dud for me

I enjoyed it.

The people that hate it dont understand that it's an allegory for modern dating. You look at an app like Tinder and its just as ridiculous. The definitely laughed a few times and I found some parts cruel but that's what good movies do. They make you feel stuff.

If you liked The Life Aquatic... you'll enjoy this. It really is a dark Wes Anderson type movie. I gave it a 7 because it can be slow at times.

Solid flick
24 November 2018
Don't listen to the critics. They wanted more dirt but Queen was involved and probably told a story that was closer to the truth. It was tastefully done, funny, and moving. They didn't use Freddie to air out old grievances. Malek was great.

Loved it
15 December 2017
It was funny, action-packed, and gets you right in the feels. The visuals were stunning and frankly, the movie wasn't bogged down with some silly romance which is what kills it for me in other sci-fi movies. They keep that to a minimum and ramp up the humor a notch instead. Without giving away too much, they've toned down Kylo Ren a bit as well and actually make a tongue-in-cheek joke about that as well.

Only the fanboys who are in way too deep are giving this bad reviews. Take 100 of them and put them in the room and they will give you 100 half-baked ideas on what the franchise should do. They don't realize how hard this is with icons dying and other icons just simply wanting out and then having to introduce new characters and maintain the narrative that they've been at war for over 40 years. That's a long time.

I'm old enough to have seen episodes 5 and 6 in the theaters and I'm telling you, this movie is as good if not better than Empire. It wasn't perfect but who cares? Neither was Empire. There were some obvious scenes that borrowed from stuff you've seen before like Battlestar Galactica and previous SW movies but again, so what?

Let's face it, you're gonna see it anyway so sit back and enjoy.

Alien Covenant doesn't break any new ground
20 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
In short, the Aliens franchise is now Friday the 13th. The same killers, killing in the same old way.

And the victims... It's kind of funny that Earth sends these allegedly well-trained crews into space on these super-expensive missions only to have them almost immediately and *inexplicably* botch the mission. How do you train a crew for 10 years and they go off the rails that fast?

Here's the thing...back in the 70's when Alien started, films were very director driven. They had substance. In today's producer-driven Hollywood, they do what's safe and lucrative. Ridley Scott is not exempt from this. He had a chance to do something interesting with Shaw and the Engineers and just flat out whiffed. This is my last Aliens movie and I'm not too optimistic about Blade Runner 2049 either.

Luke Cage (2016–2018)
8/10
Robust crime drama
27 October 2016
I have a dim view of comic book TV shows and I was completely underwhelmed by Jessica Jones. Ten episodes of her chasing this guy bored me to death. The only character who I found interesting was the neighbor girl who lived with her brother. You never knew quite what she was going to do. So, even though I LOVE Marvel movies, I had low expectations for Luke Cage.

Turns out, it was a robust crime drama with several plot lines. I liked how it was similar to New York Undercover with the nightclub setting and the famous acts. And while it IS a show that reminds you of something you've seen in the past, Colter makes up for that with his southern-man-in-NY thing. As a native NY'er, its obvious to me that he's NOT NY guy. That's character depth.

I liked how it showed people of color in all walks of life. The show is funny at times; you have to be immersed in a certain culture to get some of the jokes. I suspect this was what people who didn't like the show hated the most. Jokes about black sororities or listening to the Delfonics is lost on what would be the broader target audience for this show. The language might also put people off.

But hey, I applaud them for putting something unique and authentic out there. There's enough happening in this show that it really is a good time.

Crash and burn
8 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
The early seasons are great. It's like a live action Archer if he was a writer instead of a spy. You've probably heard this before but this show absolutely craters after Season 4. The beginning of the end was Lew Ashby's abrupt demise and the arrival of RZA as Samurai Apocalypse in season 5. I could live with the silly side characters, and their send-up of bad Hollywood movies but... Hank becomes really intolerable; he just wasn't funny or smart anymore and it just gets worse until the show ends. It looks as if the good writers left and Kapinos and Duchovny were just winging it. At one point midway through season 7 he's working on a TV show where the writers, directors, and producers become this dysfunctional group of misfits. They were clearly making fun of themselves because they had to know it was over. I bet they were just filming the day to day stuff going on on their own set.

How do you get blown up twice?
7 May 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Of all the ridiculous mistakes they made, the one that is unforgivable is why they needed to blow up Aldrich Killian twice? He was blown up in the Iron Man suit. Vaporized. And then...he wasn't. Pepper Potts has to pull an Underworld/Resident Evil maneuver and kick a grenade at him and blow him up again. How cheap.

I gave 4 stars for the CGI and the airplane scene. There was so much other stuff that stunk like Rhodey not even trying to save himself. You're the Iron Patriot for chrissakes. Maybe they should put a Marine in that suit. Stark finds a 10 year old who acts like he's 35.

Last but not least: the most accomplished actor in this movie is reduced to playing Keanu Reeves from Bill and Teds Excellent Adventure. That dude is KNIGHTED. SIR Ben Kingsley. You don't waste that kind of talent!
